Page 10. ---- Riel Rebellion Veterans At Prince Albert Exhibition ---- King Is Speaker ---- Survivors of Duck Lake And Batoche "Nation's Real Makers" --- PRINCE ALBERT, Sask., August 3. - "The real makers of a nation," to quote Rt. Hon. Mackenzie King, passed before cheering thousands here yesterday. Men and women, some nearing the century mark, with grayed hair, skins tanned by prairie sun and wind, and shoulders bowed by toil, walked by the grandstands in the "old-timers" parade, feature of the Prince Albert fair. SOME ARE 90 NINETY years had passed over the heads of a few. Some were in their prime when the Riel rebellion shook the frontier district. They had served at Batoche and Duck Lake, they knew those stormy days and they knew Riel.

The parade, in which veterans of the prairies who had lived in this district for more than 40 years, were eligible to take part, drew from Mr. King words of admiration. In his speech opening citizens' day, the Liberal leader referred to "the splendid band of old-timers-pioneers in settlement and government, who have helped to build up Canada."

POSSESSED COURAGE "Indomitable courage, self-reliance, endurance and vision" had been their manifestation. These were the qualities to rely on in times of stress, rather than looking to vain remedies.

This is the golden anniversary of the Prince Albert fair. Yesterday it drew to the platform men prominent in the life of the province.

It being citizens' day, Mr. King chose citizenship for his theme. He said as this world progressed the meaning of this word "citizen" expanded. It was not now circumscribed by the locality in which the individual dwelt. A Canadian citizen was a citizen of the British Commonwealth, of the world. The world point of view had now arrived with the growth of communication, transportation and dissemination of knowledge. HUMANITARIANISM NEEDED Human society must "substitute the law of the neighborhood for that of the jungle" if the present-day problems are to find permanent solution, Mr. King asserted at a banquet of the Elks Grand Lodge here last night. The last war constituted a great out- break of the jungle spirit in humanity. but it also served to demonstrate the high spiritual qualities of self-sacrifice, love and bravery in humanbeings.

As a member for the constituency of Prince Albert, in the Federal Parliament, Mr. King welcomed members of the Grand Lodge from Canada and Newfoundland gathered here in annual convention. The problems of humanity are more important than all the great material resources of the world, he said.

Too much endeavor today was devoted to material progress and too little to human life. After all, it would be remembered that material possessions were merely for the purpose of satisfying human needs.

Nouvelle Alliance is a separatist organization that has been active for over a year and a half. While the group claims it is neither left-wing nor right-wing, it proudly and openly presents itself as promoting an identitarian form of nationalism. Is this organization a “big tent” that could unite the separatist movement or a vehicle of the radical right seeking to “fool the unwary?” In March 2022, a group of 20 young people — primarily men — held their first official meeting in Montréal. Since then, the group known as Nouvelle Alliance (NA) has founded local chapters in Sherbrooke and Québec City. Today, its membership has grown to more than 50.

"Regina Rejoices As Italy Falls," Regina Leader-Post. September 9, 1943. Page 3. --- Reginans rejoiced Wednesday as news that Italy had abandoned her Axis partners and unconditionally surrendered was received.

First flash of the surrender. came shortly before 10 a.m. and the heartening news travelled like lightning into offices, stores and homes. Citizens joined in a spontaneous celebration of the event with cheers later in the day when combined bands of the 12th. district depot and the R.C.A.F. presented a concert in front of the city hall.

School teachers announced the victory in their classrooms during the morning and the schools rang with enthusiastic cheers as discipline was relaxed. Classes in the afternoon were dismissed an hour early on instructions of the public and separate school boards, giving the students a holiday to celebrate Italy's capitulation. Hundreds Gather Several hundred persons gathered at the city hall corner when the massed bands of the army and air force played a number of selections for half an hour. The combined bands, nine ranks of khaki and blue-clad bandsmen, marched from Albert street down Twelfth avenue to Broad street, north on Broad to Eleventh and west to the city hall. The bands marched downtown following a presentation ceremony earlier at the armory parade ground

Earlier military authorities had announced a parade and a gun salute would mark the fall of Italy. But all celebrations were cancelled later in the day upon instructions from Ottawa.

The crowd that gathered blocked sidewalks and overflowed onto roads. They cheered lustily when. Bandmaster W. J. Habkirk called for three cheers and a tiger as a salute to "our troops who are overseas and to mark the victory announced today."

Opening the concert with "O Canada" the massed bands swung into "There'll Always Be An England," a tune that brought back memories of Britain's finest hour. A salute to American allies was "God Bless America." Brave tunes of Britain were "The Standard of St. George," "Land of Hope and Glory," and "Rule, Britannia."

CROWDS REJOICE: Shopping Reginans stopped to applaud bands of the Canadian army and the R.C.A.F., parading together in the downtown area on Wednesday, and with their applause there were smiles of rejoicing with the downfall of Italy. The bands played in front of the city hall and top photo shows part of the crowd which gathered on Eleventh avenue to watch the bands pass, a newsboy with The Leader-Post and its happy headline adding a symbolic touch.

i feel like i need an international friend to follow me around for a month and then give me a list of all my “canadianisms”

because obviously as a canadian these things won’t stand out to me. i have no idea what mannerisms/slang/behaviours are culturally significant all the time (obviously i know the stereotypical ones and slang is regional so that’s kind of difficult lol)

i swear i come on the internet everyday and am all “this is a completely normal thing to do/say” and then i’ll see a post and realize that like “no that’s not normal it makes it glaringly obvious you’re canadian” like ??? that’s so cool to me! that there are things i do and say that are so ingrained they are second nature and ignored but signal to people not from here that i am canadian!
