Emily Singer at Daily Kos:
Donald Trump mocked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, calling him the "Governor" of the "Great State of Canada" in a late-night post on his corrupt Truth Social platform. "It was a pleasure to have dinner the other night with Governor Justin Trudeau of the Great State of Canada," Trump posted at 12:06 a.m. ET on Tuesday. "I look forward to seeing the Governor again soon so that we may continue our in depth talks on Tariffs and Trade, the results of which will be truly spectacular for all!"
Trump was referring to a comment he made to Trudeau during a dinner the duo had at Mar-a-Lago—Trump's hideously gaudy Florida club where he improperly stored classified documents in a bathroom—about how Canada should become America's 51st state if the 25% tariff Trump is threatening to impose on Canadian goods were to kill the country's economy. Trump's unhinged Truth Social taunt appears to be a response to a comment Trudeau made on Monday, vowing to retaliate if Trump levies a tariff on Canadian products. “Trump got elected on a commitment to make life better and more affordable for Americans, and I think people south of the border are beginning to wake up to the real reality that tariffs on everything from Canada would make life a lot more expensive,” Trudeau said, according to the Associated Press. Trump is hell-bent on imposing tariffs on Canada and Mexico, describing the tariffs as a punishment for the undocumented immigrants and drugs coming into the United States across the borders with the two countries.
Trump has falsely said that Canada and Mexico would pay the tariffs. However, it’s actually paid by the American companies that import products from those countries. Those companies then pass the added costs they incur from the tariff down to consumers, inflating prices of goods. Trump's tariff plan could have sweeping negative consequences for U.S. consumers, raising the price of critical goods, such as gasoline, canola oil, and beef, Bloomberg reported.
Donald Trump doing what he does best yet again: spit on our traditional allies, this time Canada.

If I’m honest, I’m kinda tired of hearing from Americans “oh, well we don’t learn about x country in our education system.”
Look, I’m from Canada, and I’m not going to sit here and pretend like Canadians are a particularly knowledgable bunch; I’d wager, in fact, that general ignorance on global affairs and history is a problem across the anglosphere, if not much of the west and within imperialist countries in general. And I’m also not gonna pretend that Canada is particularly hard done by in the current situation, we’re in a generally pretty privileged position when it comes to the current geopolitical order.
But I can also say that we are, as English speaking countries go, smaller in our population and influence, especially compared to the US and UK. Our culture, our media, our economy, is dominated by the US with the UK occasionally poking in. We don’t have a choice but to know about the US, to go along with your shit, to be aware of it, because everything that happens down south will eventually pull on us. Most of what I know about the US isn’t from school, it’s from the news, social media, movies and books, or interacting with Americans. Like of course we learned some stuff about the US in classes, but at least in my province, we didn’t learn about the American revolution or civil war in our curriculum, it’s just history we picked up outside of that.
I’m far from an expert on american electoral politics, but I know I know more about their system, than they do ours. I know that if I say “my province voted blue” Americans assume that’s Canadian democrats despite many countries outside of the US (at least many commonwealth nations anyway) using blue for cons and red for libs. And it’s not like they respond neutrally, they often immediately plant their politics and context over ours and I have to explain before someone gets mad about something. And then they tell me about how in the states the reds are cons and the blues are libs, like I don’t know, like their politics and opinions aren’t shoved down my throat all the time.
Americans often assume our culture and country to just be theirs, but generally more liberal, and with universal healthcare. And like, I don’t think we’re radically different, but we are different. Religion doesn’t play the same role in our politics, we don’t have the same history with puritanism or evangelism, nor do we have the mega churches of the states. Our conceptions of multiculturalism is different; it’s an official policy here, and before we were still a country that saw itself as being at least french and english, and related ourselves to other countries. Our political system is different, our diasporas are different, our regionalisms are different, our history and issues are different. Of course there’s overlap, but we are different. Just because we know american culture and references, doesn’t mean we’re the same. You guys just frequently refuse to learn ours beyond us saying toque and eh.
That was a long ramble to say that while I did learn some about other countries in our education system, maybe more than those in the states, most of what I know is either from interacting with other cultures, or having some basic curiosity in other parts of the world. I’d wager that’s how it is in most places, because there’s only so much schools can really teach on their own. Maybe there’s a cultural difference in American isolationism and whatever you want to call what Canada has. It’s not like we’re unignorant, far from it.
but like
it’d be nice if more Americans could show some of that curtesy they often expect towards themselves to others sometimes

So, Canada has decided to stop sending arms to Israel after an NDP motion. The Liberals made major amendments to it so as to firmly condemn Hamas as well. It's kind of a mixed bag. Honestly, it's naive of me but I didn't expect there would still be so much outrage, even if the motion did call for an acknowledgement of Palestine as a state. All the Conservatives voted against it - to be fair, some of them wanted to wait for the motion to be passed because the amendments were super last minute and the Bloc Quebecois were annoyed that because of this there wasn't a French translation.
I guess it's a step in the right direction. I think it's still weak but you can read more on it here.

Here's a fun(?) thing to do on a Wednesday evening - compare the US Embassy versus the Canadian High Commission to London.
The Canadian is this beautiful grand Neo-Grecian building directly on Trafalgar Square and is shining and beautiful and look at all those maple leaves...

Then the US meanwhile has been punted to south of the river (gasp! the only one south of the river ohoho aren't you special) and it... Well.

I think they realize that Pierre Poilievre would embrace a Trump Government and have similar policies. He could not be further Right Wing, he'll be as extreme as his populist policies will let him abuse power.

It's always really funny to me when Europeans on this site accuse Americans of being fucked up and projecting our cultural norms onto the places we tourism through. When British tourists are so-near universally fucking beloathed. Like look, A) the US has a terrible role model B) have you ever met someone from western Europe traveling outside of Europe. Those of you that come to the US, at least, are fucking cocks.

the study itself is actually a bit fascinating from a psychological standpoint and helps affirm what people have said before about other medical conditions though like for all that this was a big bunch of fear mongering and excuse to get all in an uppity panic originally the fact that stress and outside pressures alone was enough to actually cause the symptoms mentioned is a pretty big deal!
like yeah how it was handled was horrendous and conspiratory to nations that didn't have the time of day for pulling these stunts, but the research gained and affirmed about how people will actually report similar sickness symptoms of people who are in the same group of them as a weird social 'bug' is so cool and could bring up some interesting thoughts about treatment of more psychological disorders
and a reminder that they don't say that these people weren't actually suffering from these symptoms, that's what makes this all so wild! they literally are having these symptoms for no other reason by social/psychological factors and stress! it bears repeating because wow! imagine what else people might be feeling because they're stressed out and someone suggests they might be suffering from X or Y symptoms/issue.
good hustle everyone i think if we spend another 8 years sanctioning cuba and spend another 10 billion dollars looking into this we'll get to the bottom of it
