Salvador was walking through the halls one day when he overheard Cameron and Roger talking by the lockers. He wanted to join his friends but caught their words.

Hearing the rumors about Anton based on his foreign status made Sal feel uneasy. He knew that they couldn't be true, and he'd thought his other friends were better than that.

That evening, Salvador invited Anton over, and he felt a sense of clarity run through him. He knew why he had felt so protective of him, and avoided telling him about the others’ words, but part of him was still afraid to bring his feelings to light. "Don't be scared," Anton told him, as he took his hand, and Salvador knew he had to be honest.

"Anton, I hope that you don't think poorly of me when I say this, but I... I think that I like you a lot," he said. Before he could try to back out from what he admitted, Anton's mouth was on his, and warmth filled Salvador.

The winter dance came and everyone agreed that Salvador Morales and Mary Guerra made a lovely couple. As Sal held Mary and gazed into her dark eyes as they swayed across the floor, he couldn't deny his connection with her, nor could he when he posed with her for the yearbook photographs.

The two stepped just outside the gymnasium for some fresh air and a chance to talk above the music. "Can you believe high school's almost over?" Mary asked. "What are you going to do after you graduate?"

Sal hadn't put too much thought into it. "I definitely want to stay in LA. Mom knows I like gardening and I've wondered if I could make a career of it, maybe open a flower shop someday," he confessed.

"¡Que maravilloso!" exclaimed Mary. "I couldn't imagine leaving LA either, since both my parents are here. My Papá is an artist and he can but in a word for you with his friends."

After they had discussed their plans, underneath the night sky, Salvador recognized the sensation he knew all too well. His heartbeat had quickened and excitement buzzed in him as he leaned in to kiss Mary. The future seemed brighter than the stars for them both.
