Cameron Leahy
Cameron Leahy “Critic” Dizzy Freedom (06-07-2024) Debut album. Leahy is quoted in Living Life Fearless as saying, “Say what you feel.Lately, I think ‘Critic’ is kind of about that. Accept the risks and take the plunge. Remind your friends to remain wide-eyed in a disorienting and often unsympathetic world.”

What type of music do you like? :)
Aww hello friend!!
I listen to a small variety but mostly crap from when I was a teen. But recently it's been a ton of Nathan Sharp (Natewantstobattle) though he literally just retired last week. His newest album is wonderful, though. I'd highly recommend it. It tells a story.
The Ready Set - Jordan Witzigreuter has me in a vice grip lately. If you're open minded, check out his album "Cherryland" and get back to me. My heart, man. My heart. Every song on the album is gold.
Otherwise it's a mixture...I'll pull some artists out of my music app ahaha:
Adam Young / Owl City, The Ataris, Big Time Rush (boyband aaaa), Colm McGuiness, The Cab / Bohnes / Alex Deleon, Cameron Leahy, The Exies, Fort Minor, Linkin Park, Paradise Fears, Panic at the Disco (old), Mystery Skulls (I love Luis so much), Stars, The Summer Set, Michelle Branch, and a shit ton of 80s rock that I'm not going to bother listing. This was only like 25% of what I have in my library, I have more boy bands, Britney Spears, TATU, No Doubt, and a few country artists as well (though I dont really like country) among hundreds of others.
That's just a little look, a tiny glimpse.

I miss old pop punk bands
Am I the only one who misses old bands like Hey Monday, Hot Chelsea Rae, The Cab and now The Downtown Fiction? All the lead singers of these bands have gone solo and those bands have broken up. (Not 100% sure about The Downtown Fiction, but Cameron Leahy posted a solo single the other day on Twitter)

Follow-up to THIS previous post.
From the report by Dell Cameron, posted 14 May 2020:
A bipartisan amendment to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act introduced by privacy hawks on Wednesday will bolster legal protections for surveillance targets by adding independent advisors with civil liberties expertise, especially in cases involving activities protected under the First Amendment. It further codifies the requirement for federal agents pursuing secret warrants to provide any exculpatory evidence to the special FISA court. Those changes, introduced by Sen. Mike Lee, Republican of Utah, and Patrick Leahy, Democrat of Vermont, mean the bill will now return to the House, which originally passed the bill in March.
There are three surveillance tools authorized under the bill: The first allows the FBI to secretly obtain so-called “business records” under Section 215 of the USA Patriot Act, provided they are “relevant” to international terrorism, counterespionage, or foreign intelligence investigations. After Edward Snowden revealed in 2013 that Section 215 had been used by the government to collect billions of domestic telephone records, the USA FREEDOM Act was passed to restrict the scope of material “to the greatest extent reasonably practicable,” and require the government to demonstrate it has “reasonable grounds to believe” the records are “relevant” to one of the aforementioned types of investigations.
Further, it was no longer allowed to pursue warrants encompassing entire geographical regions, such as zip codes.
The second tool is known as a “roving wiretap.” This is a secret electronic surveillance order that, instead of targeting the communications of a specific phone number (or email account), allows the FBI to monitor a target across any range of personal devices. The purpose, ostensibly, is to allow agents to continuously monitor a target, even if they make use of so-called burners, devices intended for single-use that are then thrown away.
The third tool is known as the Lone Wolf amendment. It allows the FBI to target someone reasonably suspected of being involved in international terrorism, even if the agents cannot show the individual is linked to a known terrorist organization.
A bipartisan attempt to further amend the bill to prevent the FBI from obtaining the web browsing and internet search histories of Americans under Section 215 failed on Wednesday, with 27 Republicans and 10 Democrats voting against it. The amendment, offered up by Sen. Ron Wyden, Democrat of Oregon, and Sen. Steve Daines, Republican of Montana, fell one “yea” vote short of the 60-vote threshold for passage.
From the NY Times:
Lawmakers in both parties were motivated to act based on a damning inspector general report that uncovered numerous errors and omissions by the F.B.I. in FISA applications to wiretap Mr. Page. And a follow-up study that looked at the F.B.I.’s preparations to seek 29 other FISA orders in unrelated investigations found significant problems with every one of them, suggesting systemic dysfunction. The F.B.I. and FISA court have since tightened rules and procedures.
Before passing the measure, senators voted to add more layers of outside oversight to certain applications. The House bill had already expanded the universe of cases in which the FISA court should appoint an outsider to critique the government’s arguments, adding applications that present exceptional First Amendment concerns.
The Senate broadened the guidelines still further and beefed up the powers of such outside critics. The proposal, advanced by Senators Mike Lee, Republican of Utah, and Patrick J. Leahy, Democrat of Vermont, drew wide bipartisan support, passing 77 to 19 over Mr. McConnell’s objections.
Under the amendment, investigations involving domestic political campaigns, religious groups and the news media — or an individual prominent in any such organization — are explicitly listed as the sorts of cases that should usually prompt the appointment of an outsider, unless the judges choose to make an exception. The list would also include requests of the FISA court for “approval of a new program, a new technology or a new use of existing technology.”
Whatever became of the McConnell Amendment, reported earlier? So far I can’t find any solid information about that.

2022 Reading Log pt. 13
61. Climate Change and the Health of Nations by Anthony J. McMichael, with Alistair Woodward and Cameron Muir. This is the second book I’ve read since I’ve been keeping track where the author died during editing and it was finished by friends and family (the other is Misogyny: A Brief History). The author was an epidemiologist, and this book views climate change and famine as public health issues. The book is structured around two metaphors: the idea that agriculture was a Faustian bargain, allowing for population growth at the expense of disease, inequality and the tethering of a society to a small handful of other species (qua Jared Diamond), and that of the Goldilocks Zone, where crops, diseases and people all have relatively small optimal ranges of temperature, rainfall, etc to thrive, and even subtle shifts to environmental conditions can have major effects. After two hundred fifty pages of this, the book takes a turn. The conclusion is “…and that’s why capitalism needs to be abolished”. This is a claim I certainly agree with, but wasn’t expecting out of a fairly dry tome aimed at bridging the gap between ecologists, historians and doctors. This epilogue contains several references to events occurring in 2014-2016, when the original author was dead, so I imagine that this slant was predominately that of the editors.
62. Citizens of the Sea by Nancy Houlton. This book is nominally a summary of the Census of Marine Life, a major project in recording the ocean’s biodiversity. In reality, it’s a miscellany about marine biology illustrated by the best stock images in the National Geographic catalogue. Several species discovered/popularized by the CML (like the blobfish and dumbo octopus) are mentioned in passing, but not actually discussed or highlighted. The audience for the book also seems a bit of a confused spot. The science is pretty simple, but the vocabulary is full of SAT words. Scientific names are only used in the image captions, but are used there consistently. And isopods are only ever referred to as “shrimp-like creatures”, despite words like copepod being used. Weird. I did learn a few things (like that damselfish seaweed gardens contain seaweed species found nowhere else), and the pictures were pretty, but the above mentioned issues prevent me from giving it a full recommendation.
62a. The End is Always Near by Dan Carlin. Dan Carlin is the creator and host of the long form history podcast Hardcore History, and this is a book spun off from the show. I picked this up from the library thinking, “I remember liking Hardcore History, I’ll give the book a try”. And then about five pages in, I remembered why I stopped listening to Hardcore History. Carlin combines “I’m not an expert” soft-pedaling with broad sweeping claims, and seems a little too into the prospect of armed conflict and mass death. Flipping through a bit, I saw that the thrust of the book was similar to Climate Change and the Health of Nations, above, with the topic being how civilizations decline and collapse, only with more of a focus on warfare. I have many more books to read that I think I will enjoy more, and put this aside.
63. Birdpedia by Christopher W. Leahy. I quite enjoyed Dinopedia, another of this series of pocket sized miscellanies about the natural world, so I picked this up from the library. As the name suggests, the topic is birds, along with biographical sketches of ornithologists, bird watching lingo and cultural appearances of birds. The book is good for the most part, but the parts that are bad are quite bad indeed. The author seems to be of the opinion that Alan Feduccia has the right idea in proposing that birds are not dinosaurs, as opposed to the majority of the scientific community who views him as a science-denying crank, and the book’s coverage of bird evolution is extremely outdated. This book is drawn from concepts from the author’s previous books, published in 1982 and 2002—maybe he should have read up on paleontology and/or development in the intervening 20 years since his last revisions.
64. A Hamsterish Horde of Monsters by Erin Bisson. A collection of monsters intended for B/X D&D and retroclones derived from the same source. The book is a simple PDF with no illustrations, which might have helped clarify some of the creatures, but I know how costly custom art and how relatively limited stock art is. The monsters are primarily designed for low levels—monsters with 5 or more Hit Dice are rare in the text. Some of the design tropes that appear frequently are rodents and rodent-like parts on chimeras (which makes sense given the title), elementals instead of angels and fiends as the main extraplanar entities (many of which are also chimeric in nature) and conversions of prehistoric animals “disguised” as monsters. There’s an Anzu, a Heterodontosaurus and a Pristichampsus in here, the latter two with their scientific names cropped to make common names, ala compies and raptors from Jurassic Park.
65. Superior: The Return of Race Science by Angela Saini. This book is about, as the name suggests, the use of science and pseudoscience to support the concept that there’s something fundamentally different enough about groups of humans to classify them into races. Saini is clear throughout that this is in service of politics and economics, and that most of these scientists are starting with the assumption that races must be real, and then searching for data to back up those suppositions. The book starts with a quick history of “classical” eugenics, which is stuff I was already familiar with, before talking about more modern outlets and funding sources, like the white supremacist Pioneer Fund and the journal Mankind Quarterly. One thing that I liked about the book is Saini’s interviews with a variety of figures, from the editor of Mankind Quarterly to scientists publishing in legitimate avenues whose work has been used to promote racist ideologies. I also appreciated, and learned about, the discussion of racist nationalism using science in other countries besides the US and UK, such as Indian scientists trying to find a genetic determinism of the caste system, or the popularity of human polygenesis (the idea that modern humans evolved separately in different continents) in China.

Cameron Leahy
Cameron Leahy “From the Infinite” Dizzy Freedom (06-07-2024) New single from the Los Angeles artist. According to Beats Per Minute, the song is about “cosmic hotspots” in the American West and quotes Leahy as saying he likes “…the idea that certain locations on earth get better reception on our inner clarity antenna. Portals to the past. Ancient places. There’s a certain vibration in the…
