Shoetown：　「Alright, strap in because my passion for this artist and song are basically unmatched! Cam Waters was a local legend when I was a small child, playing in crowded bars and small stages in my very hometown. I used to go to these shows with my parents and absolutely loved every minute of it, and when he died in 2009, my dad was close enough to him feature in newspaper articles about it and go to his funeral. This album has been a constant in my life. This song itself however, is the opening tack off of his 1998 album Shoetown. The "shoetown" in question is Red Wing Minnesota, a small city on the Mississippi River known as the home of the Red Wing Boots factory. The song takes a winding narrative, speaking on the people who live there and the activities that take place throughout the year. The rich vocals are accompanied by Water's skilled steel guitar strumming. This song is to me a warm blanket and the epitome of comfort. And its almost lost media I kid you not. I currently possess the only copy of every one of his CDs that I've ever seen. There are only three or so videos of him performing online, and only his final album before is death is on any streaming service. Every single person I bring this guy up to has never heard of him and then wants me to send them every song that I have ripped to my laptop. So, please, sit back, relax, and enjoy some small town blues with me!」

hourglass：　「hourglass is a pop-like song written, performed, and produced by one person: yacine! Utilizing a more dream-like feeling in the music production, the lyrics share what's it's like to go through day by day and night by night while bearing the stresses of daily living. yacine! also references their faith as a Muslim person, "Inshallah you'll guide me / Inshallah you'll listen" which represents the faith that helps guide them through their day-by-day.

Also, yacine! is just criminally under discovered as a whole. Imo, she deserves way much more views/listens. (Also, yacine! uses any pronouns!)」

Part one

CW: Cameron has just turned 19 in this. abuse, very incestuous overtones, controlling whumper, intimate whumper, bruises, bruise touching, noncon kiss (back of neck), dunking underwater, standing dishwater (this is a new cw)

Ethan approached Cameron in the kitchen, where he was dutifully finishing up their dishes for them. He took a fistfull of ashy brown hair, shoving Cameron suddenly and forcefully down so he flung his hands out to keep his head from going into the dirty water. He gripped the edge of the sink with whitening knuckles, keeping his face out of the water by six inches. Ethan slotted one leg between Cam’s from behind to better control him. 

“What’re you doing?” Cameron hissed. His agitation possessed a note of panic.

“Nothing, Cammy. Just seeing how cleaning my house is going for you.” He pushed Cam an inch closer to the sink full of water. He braced himself, using all his strength to keep himself as upright as he could against his half brother’s heavier, more muscled body. Despite Cameron’s height and lanky sort of strength, Ethan had a clear advantage. This was nothing but a crude display of it, and they both knew it.

“Ethan,” Cam said seriously, as if this might just be rough play. “Let me up, man.”

Ethan pushed him closer still, so his forehead broke the surface tension and he whimpered, straining to stay above it. 

“Why should I?” 

“Because— I did what you asked. And I’m… you’re my brother.”

Ethan hummed in barely restrained glee, leaning close to the back of Cam’s neck. “You may have just carved out a new soft spot in me. But don’t brothers do this sort of stuff?”

With his mouth open to answer, Ethan dunked him under, submerging his face in water that was equal parts soap suds and slimy food debris. Cam struggled violently, but he was pinned underneath Ethan’s unbudging weight. After many long seconds, he let him up. 

All pretense of horseplay was gone, now. Cameron coughed wetly and gasped for air. He spat into the water in abject disgust. “Let go!”

“Ask me nicely.”

“Get the fuck OFF of me!” He sent a sharp elbow backwards into Ethan’s chest.

Ethan’s exhale of surprise trailed into a laugh. “That’s not nice.”

“Ethan…”

“Nicely, Cameron,” he said, and dunked him quickly in and out of the water again. 

Cameron sputtered and spat, blinking soap from his eyes. “Stop,” he begged, more like a sob than his earlier demands. “Just please stop, Ethan. Let me up.”

“Warmer.”

“Please,” he repeated, water dripping from his hair and the tip of his nose. He sounded wrecked. “I get it. You’re stronger than me. You don’t fucking like me. I give up. Please, get off of me.”

“That’ll work,” Ethan said, leaning over and kissing the back of Cameron's neck. He cringed in Ethan’s grip and sobbed between grit teeth.

Ethan let him go.

“Look at you,” he said, watching Cameron in the reflection of the kitchen window. “Soaking wet. Let’s get you into some dry clothes. C’mon, you can borrow something of mine.” 

Cameron didn’t move. Hands still on the edge of the sink, he stared straight ahead at Ethan’s reflection in the window, still breathing hard from the struggle.

Ethan tilted his head. “I was just fucking with you. I have to make sure you’re not a pussy.”

Cam turned to look at him over his shoulder. 

“And you’re clearly not,” Ethan continued. “Come on. I have a shirt for you.”

Reluctantly, Cameron followed him into his dark bedroom. Ethan motioned for him to strip, and Cam pulled his wet shirt gingerly over his head. Ethan approached with a dry one in hand, but stopped when he noticed the dark and angry bruising that still bloomed over his ribs from the beating he’d taken back home. He reached out to brush his fingers over the purples and yellows. Cam stiffened. 

“That hurt?” Ethan asked, his voice edging towards tenderness. Cam looked at him guardedly, his body language closed and hostile. Ethan touched two fingers to the bluish center of the bruise. Cameron closed his eyes. 

“Yeah, it does,” Ethan murmured, but continued to touch. He applied light pressure and watched Cameron’s breath catch. 

“I don’t mean to take it out on you,” he said gently, walking two fingers over the dark contours of the bruise so Cameron inhaled sharply. “You didn’t do anything wrong. Our father did. But that’s got nothing to do with us. Not anymore.”

“I thought I was fucked up,” Cam said, his eyes still closed, brows knit in a soft expression of pain. “But there’s something really wrong with you.”

“How fucked up are you?” Ethan asked, massaging two fingers in the center of Cam’s wounded ribs in the way he might touch a girl. 

Cameron took hold of his wrist and pushed it away. “Not that fucked up,” he said, and snatched the dry shirt from Ethan’s other hand.

Ethan smiled to himself as Cam retreated to the shower.

The fact that my splatoons’ names aren’t their Actual In-Universe Names is so sad and keeps killing my jokes. I love fullnaming Cam incorrectly (or correctly, since that’s short for Cambrian) but that’s not a thing inuniverse. “Cam” is not their name. Their name isn’t “ギン” either. It’s a squid word, an archaic one at that, that I’m not fucking making. There was a joke I scrapped where Thresher tells Rill they’re calling them “Nyk” because havent u heard of a “Nyk-name”. I love that pun but once again That’s Not His Name. “Rill Nykur” doesn’t exist nor does “ミカゲ ショウ”. It’s [Squid Firstname] [Fish Lastname]. We aren’t conlanging to have words in two languages for “A River; might be a specific one even” and “the metaphorical concept of an unidentified shadow in the water turned into a folkloric creature but also it’s still also just a turn of phrase”

If there WAS a show made i imagine several things would be changed (some for the better some for the worse)

I can see CyFy getting a lot of alterations to make him more, uh, *digestable* for lack of a better term. because he's very loud and proud about his blackness in a unique way I've never seen before, and while I love that for him and he's one of my favorite characters, networks who don't wanna get cancelled would likely pull back on his reins so to speak. Tone him down a little or take his pride in a different direction. his DID element msy also get tweaked depending on what kind of sensitivity writers they get on board and depending on how that is handled i could vibe with it. Like I said I enjoy him a lot as-is but I can understand why others may find him offensive in some ways

I also can see the characters being made older (namely Lev who would be a challnge to get a good actor for thats actually 13) which is a change that wouldn't bother me too badly. As long as it was still clearly teens and not adults lmao

some characters may also just get cut altogether for simplicity's sake, or merged to be one character. depending on who that ends up being i can get behind the idea but it's a double edged sword

Some of the lore/tech stuff would DEFINITELY be changed because in 2024 it just doesn't make sense- the iChip Miracolina uses is a prime example haha, or the countinued existence of YouTube which is hilarious to think about that far in the future. And perhaps the wireless electricity which I think is mentioned offhandedly exactly one time ("back when electricity used to be transfered through wires")

And if diversity is ever a prime concern and keeping the characters book accurate is not, they may make some of the characters other races to sort of even out the cast, because it's very Caucasian leaning for the lead roles. Lev would likely be untouched since his blond hair and blue eyed appearance absolutely play into his character thematically but a lot of others could be racially swapped I think without much issue

Anyway. I don't really have a point with this post I'm just rambling do not take me seriously lmao

Star Sickness：　「So this is from an artist who averages about 10-25k on spotify but around 7-30 views for his topic page on youtube, and even on Spotify he only has 451 monthly listeners. This is a little suprising to me now since he's been the keyboardist for a relatively popular band (Franz Ferdinand) since 2018, but no one seems to know about his work except for hardcore fans of that band.

One really neat thing about his solo work is that ALL of the instrumentals and production were put together by just him. And it sounds great! He has a really soft and smooth voice that adds to the more personal nature of a lot of his songs.

This song seems to be his most popular and still only has 47 views on Youtube. It feels pretty spacey, fitting to title and the city night album cover, while also having a bit of a sea theme in the lyrics too. It manages to be atmospheric and have great buildup to the first chorus while still progressing quickly, I think it doesn't even feel that long despite being over 5 mins.

Overall I just think his work deserves more attention, you can barely even tell it was just one person working with what he had!」

Something something the way the bones/ashes of a ghost in TGCF work as a totem of love, bc they're literally the anchor of the soul on the mortal realm. Something something Palamedes trusting Camilla to take care of his remains in case he died, so he could come back, trusting her with his soul. Something something Camilla defending ferociously what little she could kept of him near her heart, lamenting she couldn't find the rest, keeping faith to the end.

This is a ghost love story. You could say the way remains and ghosts link is everywhere all over the world, but the specific way theyre a token of love in TGCF reminds me awfully of Camilla and Palamedes whole situation.

Hua Cheng says that if his ashes were destroyed (bc he knows xl enough to know it'd be only when xl is permanently dead and gone himself) (bc if xl doenst want him to remain in this world he won't...) it'd be OK. His soul, his very being on the hands of his beloved. The year of waiting by XL at the end, trusting HC will find his way home to him. Brr.
