Top 5 Best Films of 2024

Last post of the year (in my timezone), and I wanted to make it a good one; a positive one, even. So, without further ado, here goes!

5. Anora

The "Common People" to Pretty Woman's "Uptown Girl" and the first Sean Baker film I can confidently say that I liked, rather than 'quite liked' or 'kind of liked' (as was the case with Red Rocket), Anora came out of nowhere, body-slammed me into a wall, then left without an apology as it should. How Mikey Madison didn't blow out her vocal cords during the home invasion sequence, I have no idea. What I do know is I hope she - and Mark Eydelshteyn - get more work.

4. Cuckoo

Beautiful and bonkers with star turns from both Hunter Schafer and Dan Stevens (who was having a really good year this year) and a reveal that is only slightly less bizarre than the world it's set in. I compared it to A Cure for Wellness and I stand by it. Although ACFW didn't end in of the best worst gunfights in modern cinema, which was the cherry on top of a fucking weird cake.

3. Abigail

Gory, hilarious, and the best thing Radio Silence have done since 2019's Ready or Not (which has become something of a comfort watch for me over the years). Four strong consecutive films being good to very good is a rarity in any filmmaker's career, but the Radio Silence guys have managed that with aplomb and seeming ease. Alisha Weir holds her own against a group of more experienced actors who are twice her age, and my partner and I picked up on that The Guest reference at the end. Don't think that went unnoticed, RS.

2. Dune: Part Two

The problems I had with Part One were chiefly that the pacing was uneven and that the supporting characters weren't given much to do. Those problems were fixed in Part Two, leading to an expansive and engrossing watch of an epic that remained accessible to people not well versed in the source novel. The visuals are stunning, as is par for the course with Villeneuve, with the Paul/ Feyd-Rautha fight being a highlight (see above). Stilgar gets the best moments, almost stealing the film altogether. Film critic Mark Kermode summarised the film as "Life of Brian played straight", and I'm inclined to agree.

Honourable mentions:

Longlegs: The only July horror whose ending did not tell me to go fuck myself, this was a tense and absorbing watch despite Cage being Cage. Loved the noir feel to it. Sidenote: I'm convinced that Lee Harker is autistic.

Civil War: What can I say, this was great. Not too much worldbuilding, and the slow dehumanisation of the war journalists as they become complicit in the dehumanisation of the subjects they photograph was a fascinating direction to take.

Boy Kills World: The best videogame adaptation of the year and the first revenge thriller with a nameless orphaned protagonist that was released in April. Man, Bill Skarsgard has had a mixed year.

Monkey Man: The other revenge thriller with a nameless orphaned protagonist, Dev Patel gives 120% and grimes up good doing it. It has themes and ideas, it executes them well, it has funny moments, and it lacks sexual violence.

Poor Things: I did not know how much I wanted to see Mark Ruffalo scream "CUUUUUUNNNNNNNTTTTT!!" until this came along.

And finally, the best thing I saw this year... drum roll pleeease...

1. The Substance

Dune: Part Two held this spot for so long, but then The Substance came along, body-slammed it into a hidden alcove in its own bathroom, and settled in its place comfortably. Hatching - my number one film of 2022 - was about a girl entering puberty, entering a point where she would start to be desired by the opposite sex; The Substance follows a woman reaching the end of that desirability. It's the only film I wanted to see again before it left cinemas, and regretfully, I did not get that chance to. It straddles that line between ironic and unironic arthouse. It is beautiful, it is uncompromising, it is vicious, it is stark, it is unforgettable, and it is deserving of this spot. Brava, Mme Fargeat and co.

Caroline insisted on seeing her son. She was near hysterics as she cried and laughed during the FaceTime call. 

And then she asked where the hell they were. The room behind Bucky, his son and brother in law was vast and strange looking. Especially with the time heist platform behind them.

Christopher deferred to Bucky to answer that question. 

“James?” Caroline asked. 

Bucky felt an inner qualm every time he lied to Caroline. She still didn’t know exactly who he was after all. 

“We’re at the Avengers Compound upstate.”

Caroline’s mouth opened slightly. “Why…?” She asked slowly. 

Steve chose that moment to walk in with Bruce right behind him in all of his green and bespectacled glory. “Buck? We need you.”

“Buck?” Caroline repeated. “James, even I know who that is behind you. If Daniel was here…” Her words trailed off for a moment. “I want all three of you to come to Philadelphia.”

“Okay, Mom,” Christopher answered her. “As soon as we can.”

“Now,” she stressed. “Chris,” she said, looking at her grandson, “Make sure, okay? Grandma needs her boy's home.”

“Okay, Grandma. Love you.”

Bucky got up from the couch and approached Steve and Bruce. “What is it?”

“Tony did it… and Rocket.” Steve looked anxious. “The stones are ready for the glove.”

Bucky’s eyes widened. “Shit.” His heart was suddenly slamming against his rib cage. “Not yet. I… I need someone at home for Maggie. She won’t understand why she’s alone.” His hand was in his hair as he looked back at Chris and Christopher. 

As much as he needed to be there when Maggie came back — because she would, there was no other choice — he had to be here to make sure it happened. 

“I’ll go. I need to see my sister again,” Christopher said as he approached.

NAME: Rocket

RESIDENCE: verse dependent; Cage floor in the Arete, Prison, Milano, Benatar, Eclector 's Third Quadrant, Bowie, Knowhere, His personal room at Rei's (New York Apartment on Earth that's RP canon specific) -- there could be more

TYPE OF BED: verse dependent; cage floor, he didn't have a bed on the Milano and just slept at the table or in his cockpit seat, or just found some place to curl up at. Later he gets makeshift 'rooms' to sleep in. They'd basically be storage closets he repurposes for some privacy, the bed would be just some metal chest with a flat surface, sometimes they're slightly padded on top but he doesn't care for the softness. His main bed on Knowhere is fashioned from a bent hatch door which suits him well. His bed at Rei's is an extra firm traditional mattress on a military cot (twin sized). Rocket never requires a bed, and could find comfort sleeping in just about any situation so long he is tired.

NUMBER OF BLANKETS: He typically has one thin blanket that he only partially covers with. (He tends to cover his feet and spoon against the rest.)

NUMBER OF PILLOWS: none (He uses his arms) if one is provided he *may* use it.

TYPE OF CLOTHING: He often sleeps in his clothes, although he may take a few layers off (shirt, maybe pants) having pajamas may seem a little pointless to him unless it's some sort of expectation (like a sleep over or something) . He does like to wear less though because sometimes he finds comfort in being in just his underwear sleeping on his metal bed against his blanket, pretending he's back in his cage with his friends.

DO THEY SLEEP WITH COMPANY?: He wants to, like it is peek comfort for him, platonically. I think it is something he craves deep down and going to bed alone all the time just emphasizes his loneliness. He's use to it but when he gets a chance to sleep near someone he won't exactly pass it up. When Groot is small, Rocket let him sleep along with him a lot.

DO THEY SLEEP BETTER WITH COMPANY?: He typically does, it gives him a sense of safety and acceptance. He's a much sounder sleeper when he's near someone he trusts.

DOES IT MATTER WHERE THEY SLEEP?: No, he'll pass out anywhere, even in a sink (they're nice and cool)

WHAT DO THEY DO IF THEY CANNOT FALL ASLEEP?: He'll get up and tinker, or listen to music, maybe message a friend to distract himself

FREQUENT DREAMS, NIGHTMARES: He dreams in flashbacks a lot, he also has a lot of nightmares that focus on his failures. He sometimes has good dreams too usually about earning a lot of money

DEEP SLUMBER OR NAPS: He mostly takes naps due to paranoia of being unconscious for too long. If he feels safe he might get a normal night's sleep. It also doesn't help that he's biologically nocturnal so his internal clock is all fucked up.

WHEN DO THEY SLEEP: He doesn't abide by any planetary clock and just sleep when his body needs it. He relies heavily on coffee when he wakes since he's often shorting himself on sleep. This is an unknown large factor why he's often moody, as he'll be strung out and tense on caffeine and his body is just tired and not getting proper rest.

WHAT COULD WAKE THEM UP: typically nightmares or noises. He's got sensitive ears so he tends to wake if people around him aren't trying to keep quiet and if he's waken up by someone he's typically gonna be grouchy and be rude about it. Like if he's sleeping, leave him tf alone because he doesn't get enough of it.

Rocket has never been the hero sort but he's finding a decent home with the Guardians, thriving on the excitement of saving the world but struggling with the interpersonal relationships aboard the ship. He tends to keep everyone at an arms length due to his trauma, trying not to get attached at risk of losing those he cares about - however little that's succeeding given how he cares for his shipmates and fellow Guardians.

#BOUNTY - Set in canon before Rocket joined the Guardians.

Rocket is troublemaking bounty-hunter, trying to get by making as many credits as possible to keep running from his past. He doesn't stay in one place very long and certainly doesn't endeavor to make friends, this version of Rocket is decidedly more cold than most others, completely in survival mode.

#CAGED - Set in canon, during his time as an experiment.

Thus far his entire life has been spent in confinement, doing his utmost to learn and survive, looking forward to the world he's been promised by his creator. Though he has his doubts that it'll ever come to fruition, doubting enough to collect what he needs to escape this place, if ever they need to.

#CHARGE - Set in canon, post GOTG3.

Rocket is now the leader of the new Guardians of the Galaxy, training them to face down danger in order to protect those in the universe who can't protect themselves. It's a far cry from the selfish creature he used to be, he's now dealt with a lot of his trauma and is quite content in the life he's found himself in.

I miss my pokemon verse for bokuto. he joined team rocket for the benefits (dental, healthcare, etc.) because he's a broke college student. but he didn't know they were stealing pokemon and stuff, so he'd do things like heal the trainers trying to stop Team Rocket at their HQs, or release a bunch of pokemon from their cages because the cages were too crowded and/or too small for the pokemon in them.

Money means power, power means status and status means the power to have influence, the influence of others at the expense of yourself, a cage you put yourself in because you felt like you had the right to control someone else.

Why do I live in a world that I don’t feel I belong?

Because the people who were supposed to protect me don’t even hear or listen to my song.

I’m sorry, I wish I could put on my blinders, it must be nice to block out all that trauma

But I can’t just ignore my peripheral vision

So why do you?

It’s still your world ,you still get to choose.

It’s sad to think about new life being brought here because the only thing this world has in-stowed in me is fear.

The bullying, gossip, it’s the only thing you’ll hear

I may come off as cold or closed minded but this was my defense to the world that surrounds us

Falkner’s AUs: A Sloppy Summary

((Feel free to come to me asking questions or to plot/wing something. I just have a lot of verses and want to do stuff with them. There are some smaller, more specific ones (like Falk as a normal angel, and a prince one), but these are the ones that I think people would be most interested in.

Warning: almost all of his AUs have him even more asocial than his main one. I’m sorry for this stick in the mud.

EDIT: Fire and Steel will make its debut once I finish figuring it out.

Less than Human: The one, the only. Falkner is a human/Pidgeot hybrid (usually made by Team Rocket, but open to change). He lives in a cage and doesn’t trust people, but is also very naive bc this all started when he was like 9. Help him or hurt him, you decide.

Sensual Songbird: Falkner is a high-end prostitute living in a brothel, where he’s focused on paying off his debt and moving on with his life (however that may happen). There’s reason to believe he comes from a powerful family, leaving all the more mystery as to how he got himself into this situation. He doesn’t care who he hurts in the process of getting out.

Murkrow Magus: Falkner is a necromancer who largely uses his powers for the greater good, but is nearing the end of his contract with his dark magic, which will then consume him and use his body to wreck havoc. Strong emotions make the magic spread faster, making him very withdrawn and avoidant of making connections.

Unnamed Rocket verse: Young Falkner became a Rocket grunt in a teenaged bid for vengeance against delinquent trainers and boy does he regret it. He can’t return to his family, and his afraid of speaking because he sounds too much like his dad and doesn’t want people to make the connection. So he only addresses his higher-ups, and otherwise has a Murkrow trained to repeat specific phrases and ‘talk’ for him.

Carrion Dove (never used): Falkner is a fallen angel, cast from the heavens for trying to eat another angel to take their power. He likes to feed off human anger and envy, and offers to ‘help’ in order to make those emotions stronger.

Crane Feathers: Falkner’s father is a wealthy textile merchant in my attempt at Edo-period Johto, and Falkner works under him. He’s probably more social in this verse than any other, more out of necessity than any other reason, but he’s very peaceful and enjoys traveling to obtain stock for their business.
