So I just saw on the Reddit group that ratings for episode 1 are down 73% from season 1 which I just can not believe. Obviously I don’t have sources but from the rave reviews to the better advertising, and bigger hype, I got the impression this season would be even bigger. Do you have a reliable source for ratings to see how it’s doing viewership wise or is it too early to tell?

The ratings for cable are down, which is no surprise.

AMC commented on people cutting cable faster than anticipated before, which is also why they said they would refocus on streaming. Hence the intensified international streaming releases and cooperation with HBO MAX etc.

They own the intellectual property, they would be plain stupid to not build it all up, especially since they just said at the panel to develop Talamsca, and Mayfair Witches (and likely Night Island still).

On the contrary, since they own the IP (and supposedly paid big bucks for it) they will milk this for all it’s worth.

I won’t lie it’s depressing the hell out of me that people on my dash are literally begging others to watch certain queer shows in an attempt to stop them from getting cancelled.

Neil Gaiman is on here asking people to tell their friends about DBD so that the likelihood of the show getting axed becomes lower. That show hasn’t even been out for two whole weeks - people have barely even had time to enjoy it before worrying about whether it’s going to be renewed.

It just really sucks that we’re finally getting good, diverse queer representation on TV but now we have to learn how to play the game and fight for it to stay there.

According to a report from Oliver Darcy’s Status newsletter (note that it’s behind a paywall), the left-of-center MSNBC news network is apparently toying with shaking up its business model so it can be on “better terms” with Republicans.  Darcy reported that Mark Lazarus, the newly installed leader of SpinCo, a new company comprising networks like CNBC, MSNBC, and E!, indicated that he would like the outlet to incorporate “more GOP voices on its air.” Darcy cited people familiar with Lazarus’ thinking but said that no formal directive or editorial guidance has been given to MSNBC anchors or producers. 

“To be clear, Lazarus has signaled that he wants the channel to retain its core progressive identity," Darcy reported. Lazarus has also stated he intends to keep top talent, including Rachel Maddow. But there’s evidence that some of the network’s other well-known anchors want a better working relationship with Trump. In mid-November, Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski, cohosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” were widely criticized after they visited Mar-a-Lago to visit the president-elect. Perhaps Lazarus’ thinking is merely business-driven. After all, according to data from Nielsen, which was cited in reporting by the Wall Street Journal, MSNBC averaged 603,000 prime-time viewers from Nov. 6 to Dec. 8—down by more than half from the network’s year-to-date average. CNN’s ratings tumbled after Election Day, too, while Fox News was up by 12%. There’s also the looming threat of mega-billionaire Elon Musk. In November, the Tesla CEO teased that he could buy MSNBC. “How much does it cost?” he asked in a post to his social media network X.

His question was in response to a re-post by Donald Trump Jr. that falsely stated Comcast is putting MSNBC up for sale. (Comcast instead plans to spin off NBCUniversal’s cable networks into a separate company, but this change is not expected to affect individual channels or assets.)

Mark Lazarus, the new overseer of SpinCo networks including MSNBC, would love to make room for more GOP-leaning voices on the network.

After seeing the latest ratings, I think it's time we all came to terms with the fact that the show is likely going to be canceled. I was banking on a Lestat/TVL centric episode increasing the ratings because it's never been adapted before, but to my astonishment episode 3 was the least viewed episode yet. I think it's fair to say that it would require a bloody miracle to get a renewal at this point. What do you believe AMC's strategy will be now? Do you foresee them trying to shift focus to Mayfair Witches and make them the face of the universe? 😓🫶🏻

Okay so a guy in my solid state physics class was telling us about this muon scanning startup he worked at, GScan, and I'm going insane. I don't work there and I have no stake in the company, financial or otherwise, I just need to tell you about it.

Muons are short-lived subatomic particles, same charge as an electron but ~200 times more massive. On Earth, they're produced by cosmic rays colliding with the upper atmosphere, and they hit the ground at a rate of about ten thousand per minute per square meter.

They're moving extremely fast at ground level, like 0.99 c. So they careen right through matter, deflecting only very slightly around heavy atomic nuclei – they'll penetrate like a hundred meters into solid rock.

What do you do with this continuous shower of deep-penetrating charged particles, constantly blanketing every square inch of the Earth's surface?

The classic thing is use them to image the inside of massive structures, like we use x-rays to look inside living tissue – except instead of generating them yourself, you just use atmospheric muons. Muon archeology is a whole thing, they've used it to find hidden chambers in pyramids and stuff. Neat!

But this one Estonian company is doing some crazy bullshit and I love it.

Sandwich anything between a pair of portable muon detectors and get full 3D imaging of the interior, with sub-millimeter accuracy, by tracking the minute deflection of muons between them. Samples that are WAY too thick for x-rays, made of literally anything. Just put some muon detectors on some two by fours in a warehouse and call it a day.

You can just. Image anything??? Anything you want?? Completely passively!! Just detectors! No particle source! Put them anywhere. The detectors themselves are a mature technology, the company's tech is in the algorithms they use to get this level of spatial and elemental resolution.

You can detect failures inside cable-reinforced concrete bridges without cutting open the bridges.

Decommissioned Soviet nuclear submarine filled with concrete, with no drawings or documentation, that may or may not have spent fuel canisters in it? And you need to cut it up for storage? Just look at the muons.

One of the wackiest ideas is to put one detector under your bed and one on the ceiling, so you get a full 3D scan of your body every night, passively. I want one.
