Only upside to the wardrobe in cm is that the ladies aren't heavily sexualized and they're not constantly walking around in low cut tops, white pants, and skinny heels. Still, it would not hurt adding some color into their wardrobes. Like even Garcia wears less colors compared to s1-15, it's so depressing to see

My review of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation S1 EP 1 Spoilers Ahead

I love the CSI universe but I've never finished any of the whole series. I made it to season 3 of the original and season 3 of CSI NY and nothing of Miami and Cyber. I do own all of CSI the original now so I have decided to watch them all now.

So this will be a rewatch for me but some previous thoughts I have that should be shared are that I really like Warrick Brown as a character. I read the novels as a kid as I couldn't watch the show due to being too young but the books were okay. I was devastated when I read about Warrick's death but I also like Greg Sanders. Since I only have seen through season three and then episodes on TV here and there I know some future stuff but not much.

The pilot is entirely different from the rest of the show in terms of its cinematography and coloring. It is darker and grittier than what occurs. Also the number of cases shown in one episode is higher than the others. Typically it is two cases maybe three but this has five. The first case shown being the bathroom murder sets up a recurring killer who manages to outsmart the CSIs. Nick also starts a recurring plot line with the robbery of a hotel guest which continues throughout the season. Catherine is set up as a single mom who cares deeply for her daughter and struggles with cases involving children. Warrick is set up for his gambling addiction, anger issues with this one being towards Brass and the Judge owning Warrick which sets up the major conflict of the next few episodes. Nick and Warrick are also established to be nearing CSI level Three and being good friends. Holly is shot and is suspected not to make it through putting Warrick on administrative leave. It is wild to have what you assume to be a new main character be shot and potentially die in the pilot episode.

Overall this does a great job of setting up the show and while it has a completely different look and feel than the rest of the show it captures the vibe well. It is a well done pilot and sets up the type of show it is as forensic based crime shows were modeled after CSI: Crime Scene Investigation.

Tell us about your current project(s)  – what’s it about, how’s progress, what do you love most about it?

I'm currently working on a CSI Miami fic- a show that I'm well aware is extremely flawed and inaccurate but I still love - that will be the first part in a series. This part is set in 1999, and the main character is my OC Amy Evans, a 17-year-old from Maine who finally finds out her biological father's real name - Horatio Caine - and after tracking him down travels to Miami and tells him (and it's confirmed after a DNA test). It's only just started, but I've written the first scene, and what I love most about this - and the rest of the planned series - is the chance to write another parent-child relationship, especially because the show itself never really did much with that despite bringing in Kyle (who's still going to show up, by the way).

18. Do any of your stories have alternative versions? (plotlines that you abandoned, AUs of your own work, different characterisations?) Tell us about them.

The fic above was actually intended as an alternate for the original version of the fic - where Amy joins the team as a CSI in S5 and doesn't find out Horatio is her bio dad until halfway through S6, but this story never really flowed, and I finally had to admit it was because I much prefer the earlier seasons in terms of characterisations and plotlines.

The Shieldmaiden Saga was also going to be a lot different - aside from less OCs and Tommy Merlyn still being dead, Steph and Eddie were actually going to end up together! That was my original intention, that Steph's unrequited love would be returned after the S1 finale (which would play out as in canon except Eddie would fall to an alternate Earth, get healed by Brianna Thawne, and return), and I was all for this! And then I started writing, and realised that given that a theme of my story was that 'friends are just as important', having this happen would absolutely undermine that, and also sometimes unrequited love stays that way and that's fine, so that's no longer happening and Steph's unreturned feelings aren't a major source of angst for her - she loves being his best friend and values that above anything else, and at some point her feelings will fade, and that is a far better path for my story.

fundamentally i think the underlying thesis of csi ny is grief. 

on the surface the csi franchise is a who dunnit with a crime of the week style with a few multi-episode arcs sprinkled throughout csi ny was far more character driven than the others were

(again, i only really watched s1 and 2 of miami and very quickly horatio devolved from a character to a meme for me)

csi ny went hard on character right from the gate whereas the original csi was far more inconsistent with character the first few seasons because it’s main drive through season 1 and a lot of 2 was the science over character. i’d say it wasn’t until they really earnestly started delving into grissom that the show began to pivot into developing the characters more deeply. 

(i’d even go as far as to say the grissom years had an overreaching theme of gil grissom the scientist versus gil grissom the human but this isn’t about vegas)

(does any one else remember when catherine was originally from bozeman, montana and raised on a ranch? they would reuse that for lindsay monroe later on which i find hilarious.)

but csi ny opens immediately on mac taylor in a church looking like he’s holding back tears and clearly contemplative. blink later reveals to us that his wife claire died on 9/11 and he’s very much still grieving for her as he talks to the victim about her (the beach ball speech fucks me up every time) and the episode ends with him going to ground zero.

mac’s grief for claire was always it’s strongest thread that this show had. when one gets to indelible in season 8 it’s very natural and utterly heartbreaking to finally see claire and how mac was with her. 

but the other characters also have huge plot lines that revolve around grief and their response to it. lindsay with the deaths of her friends as a teenager, danny when ruben sandoval dies, flack with the loss of jessica. adam and the complicated relationship he has with his father. but there’s different kinds of grief explored too as with stella. a lot of stella’s grief and pain she feels at having to kill frankie in self-defense and how he damaged her sense of safety and she also experiences a lot of grief around identity which plays out in season 5.

yes, it’s a show about murder but underneath that it explored multiple facets of grief. 

i think the best quote about why these kinds of shows resonate with people:

“sometimes bad things happen to good people and we don’t get to know why”
