The only reason I haven’t finished reading CHEW, though I know what happens for the most part, is because I know Colby dies and I am not ready for that…
I know he’s an asshole but he’s like, one of my favorite characters from the comic and I just don’t want to have to actually face it.

One of the things I really love of about Nen is its adaptability. Generally, if any magic system is reasonably balanced, it can be reimagined as a nen ability.
Today is a cross-over ability from the comic series CHEW.
Tumblr media
Whenever the user eats an object (1,r,En) they see the past (1,e,S) of that object. This ability cannot be disabled (2,R,En) and does not work on beets (1,r,En). When seeing is hard, the user checks investigation (1,r,EN) When the user eats another nen user (1,R,En) they gain that target's abilities (4,e, S)
This ability is the first case of a major restriction, in this case that the ability can never be disabled. This is supposed to represent the unpleasant day-to-day downside of being cibopathic.
It's also the first instance of a meta-ability, or an ability about abilities. Personally I just love this series and am glad I get to adapt it my game.

comics as an art form make me insane. they’re so difficult to do well. there’s so many different ways to make sequential art work and most of them are deeply unintuitive. onomatopoeia that feels completely ridiculous to put down often reads seamlessly. panels on a page become a fractally nested image composition challenge that’s only possible to lose because if you do a good job no one will notice. you have to direct the readers’ eyes on a specific path across the page but also account for the fact that they won’t follow it. comic time isn’t linear. if the order of events isn’t crystal clear the story becomes incomprehensible. sometimes you need to do this on purpose. all this for a medium almost universally considered less effective than animation and less respectable than plain text. even its own name doesn’t take it seriously

The last topic from my research list is a comic series created by John Layman and Rob Guillory named 'Chew'. I've heard of this series a few times but never thought much of it even though the premise is quite interesting and different. it follows police detective Tony Chu who has a strange ability where, if he eats a dead body, he will have a psychic vision showing him who killed them. The book reminds me of Dexter and The walking dead shown in the style of 'I hate fairyland', (I'll show bellow) While I do like the sound of the story and plot I will most likely not read this as I think the style is quite off putting, I do think that the style goes hand in hand with the idea and story telling but It's just not for me.

So, I bought the remaining volumes of the series CHEW I needed plus the first two volumes of CHU. But like, man. They sent them all in SEPARATE PACKAGES.
Tumblr media
Like man. These books aren’t that thick. They all came from the same place. Why ship them separately?
Tumblr media
I just really love this series though. I’m just glad I got them.❤️
