#something to be said not just about how Ibrahim aims to replace his past family with his present bond with Süleiman (and Musti and Mahi#branch off of that bond) but also how Hatice fits in all of this - the one Ibrahim leans on everytime he's likely to lose SS is *her*#she isn't just the future he wants to secure in the castle but also the past he yearns for outside of it especially in that initial period#of their relationship; and not just any past but a very particular fragment of it - the next most valuable person of his past other than#his brother: his *mother*. it's no wonder him playing *his mother's* melodies with the violin marks the beginning of their story and stays#an important motif throughout. just like Ibrahim's mother Hatice is so familiar yet so out of reach (and this unreachability accumulates in#E13 - Ibrahim leaves for Parga thus returning to his past but leaving Hatice behind but *then* finding out his mother is gone too.#*both* people he wants to be close to soo much are *gone* in that moment. there's a link between them because of this. also Hatice tieing#lbrahim's mother to “heaven” as well and her “looking at their happiness from above” Ibro responds with in E14.) Hatice will distance#more and more from that role later on until lbrahim starts to outright abandon this whole 'return to the past' idea with Hatice and#search for it through Nigar instead. but yeah anyway I feel these two scenes are the perfect encapsulation of how complicated#the past is for lbrahim; he avoids remembering it because it *hurts* to remember both because why would he remember it when he already has#an established future and because deep down he resents what he's become and established as that isn't ever permanent and he's lost all else#*himself* most of all as who is a person without his roots? he wants to forget them but can't ever do it so what's left is replacing them#*all of them*; when he finds Hatice too he wants to have *both* her and Süleiman and SS marrying Hatice off directly challanges that want#up to that point he believed in the possibility of their love more than Hatice did; now? he seems as lost as she is not knowing what to do#the only way not to lose either of them is accepting Süleiman's order convincing himself that this is how it should be no matter how much#that hurts and would bury him even deeper; he can't bear it so he searches for a solution - and when he sees Rhodes sea? it hits him#it hits him how low he's actually sunk through the losses and if he can't “fully* replace the past he'll *fully* return to the past letting#*everything else* once hidden out as well. not to mention how right before he left to Parga he was brought to fear for his literal death#and then he is given more power that also brings some uncertainty with it and that likely scared him cementing his departure for Parga#directly following Piri Pasha's advice to let power go as it won't let *you* go#(btw a big contrast between S01 and S03 Ibrahim can be drawn in his relationship with Piri Pasha and his relationship with Ebusuud)#magnificent century#muhteşem yüzyıl#muhtesem yuzyil#ibrahim pasha#(sorry for the disorganized tags but if I kept it like it was I would've exceeded the limit before I even finished 😅)#(just Ibrahim and Hatice in general are people who latch onto each other to get over their losses and ache for peace amidst their turbulent#lives and positions and that's what keeps them close and will later too)

Okay okay so. Thinking.
I've mapped out how I want to pay off my credit cards, which means I'll only be getting new stuff pretty sporadically, which means I need to appreciate the zero cost things in my life, like:
- the 2.5 foot tall stack of unread books I have
- the violin I might finally actually pick up again
- the 500+ drawing prompts I've been hoarding
- the list of anime I still need to watch
- the 3000+ songs in my watch later playlist
- the stickers I've been neglecting to cut
- yarn??? I have a lot of yarn
- all the pink fabric leftover from moth cosplay
- the candles and incense I also already have
In short, time to actually use the stuff that I have 😭
#though. i do want one more candle. they're putting minty smells in the winter ones and it smells cold#i need a cold smelling candle that is warm and on fire i just need that very strange contrast#but yeah!! will spend a little testing out acrylic charms but for the most part#we're gonna hang out at home for a while and express gratitude or whatever lmao#okay but i think it will actually be nice to start getting through all those books skjfkdkd#and to watch the bigger name anime to actually see them lmao; saw a lot at the con i recognized but hadn't actually watched#and also my music!! all my music bc i am clinically insane about music; miku playlist advancement...#this isn't even touching on the games i have now ksjfkf if either of you are reading this 👀 i still wanna get yall something#and I'm planning the exact day i wanna do it 😤#but yeah I'm thinking it over and am like. oh boy time for self improvement skjdkfkf#also finances will get easier bc im not ubering all over and I'm not seeing docs for my stomach now that the ulcer has been resolved#i made back half of what i spent getting the car in only 4 months and that feels good to see#it's still gonna be some hard work but we're gonna make it; I'm also highballing one of the cards#the hotel put a damages hold on my card and my math factors that in; they said that money would go back to me in 5 or so#business days so that'll be a little less to be concerned with; I'll still try to pay what numbers i found though#do it faster and do it better and idk what the fuck I'll do with the cards bc. 30% apr...........#idk i could get groceries with them and then pay them off? take that credit score you'll just eat that shit up won't you..#surprisingly my credit score hasn't taken any super ugly hits from this and i aim to keep it that way lmao#anyways. that's a lot of words to say that i want to actually use my stuff lmao#shai speaks

once again thinkin about revisiting the idea of putting together a satyr ren faire outfit now that I know how to sew and make props and stuff, and while it will inevitably be nyssa inspired now that I have a specific satyr oc to draw inspiration from, it can't be a full cosplay of her specifically cause she's an herbivore and when I go to the ren faire eating a turkey leg is half the point

Review:
The title of Harry's House came before the actual album did, inspired by Hosono's House, the debut album of wildly influential Japanese pop singer Haruomi Hosono. Styles had heard the record during a visit to Japan and become enamored with the idea of naming an album "Harry's House", and more specifically building an album around the metaphor of a "house" representing his internal mind. Written and recorded primarily through 2020 and 2021, Harry's House is a product of Styles' pandemic musings, a collection of songs about love and life that all feel distinctly nostalgic. Even the happier tracks on the album carry notes of wistfulness, at times making it hard to tell whether a song is about a breakup or a current love.
Sonically, Harry's House moves beyond the 70's rock of Styles' first two albums and embraces the synths starting to emerge in Fine Line. The album is light and airy, with folk and funk influences adding a whimsical feel to the indie-pop of most of the songs. The opener, "Music For A Sushi Restaurant", welcomes us in with enthusiastic horns, and the groovy "Daydreaming" gives us a sample from The Brothers Johnson's "Ain't We Funkin' Now". It's a charming deviation from the often heavy-handed imitation of past artists on his early albums; while you can still see older music's influence on Styles he seems to be letting go of his need to be seen as a "serious" artist, and the result is a pleasant blend of pastiches that no longer feel like they're trying too hard.
Where Harry's House excels is also where it falters; it's good in a comfortable way, an easy listen made easier by the fact that there isn't anything quite innovative about it. Styles is taking other genres and sounds and presenting them to an audience that might not be aware of them in a pleasant, palatable way; that in itself is a talent, and one he has always been good at. But that is not something that will make you remembered. Harry's House is a good album. Harry Styles is a good artist. But it's clear he desires iconicism, wants his name up there with his idols, and for that you need more than just good music and great stage presence.
Sonically, Harry's House is great, boasting catchy melodies and strong production. The lyrics are where we see Styles start to stumble; they're cloyingly vague, giving the listener enough information about him to contract their own idea of him, but not enough to ruin whatever that idea may be. It's the same vagueness Styles has perpetuated throughout his entire career, keeping himself aloof enough to build mystery and let fans project their own fantasies of what they want him to be. But it's frustrating when that same aloofness extends past his interviews and media presence into his art. Harry's House feels at times like you're hearing about someone's life through whispers on the street; while you can piece together an idea of what's going on you still don't understand who they truly are.
The best written song on the album (and coincidentally, the only one with a female songwriter) is "Matilda", a lovely ode to leaving behind a family that mistreated you. "You don't have to be sorry for leaving and growing up" Styles croons over a bare guitar melody, in a voice that seems to insist he understands. While his lyrics can get jarringly cringey at points in the album ("cocaine/side boob/choke her with a sea view" in Keep Driving, "you hide the body all that yoga gave you" in Little Freak, and other trope-y descriptions of his female lovers that aim for sexy but land at awkward) it's moments like this that show his potential as a songwriter. He can articulate personal thoughts well when the song isn't necessarily about himself, but when writing about his personal life his desire for privacy hedges his lyrics into vague statements.
Despite the vagueness of a lot of the lyrics, there are snapshots of intriguing concepts throughout the album: "Harry you're no good alone/Why are you sittin' at home on the floor?/What kind of pills are you on?" Styles sings in "As It Was", the lead single and another highlight of the album. The mental health struggles and implied substance abuse issues seemingly referenced add a lot more dimension to his character, and would be a very interesting thing to explore, but they're never mentioned again. He hints at cracks in his idyllic life but gets too scared and shies away from fully discussing them. You can tell he wants to be vulnerable, and tell that even sharing what he's already shared about himself is a struggle, but at some point the lack of substance shifts from making Styles seem like a private person to making him seem like someone who just doesn't have anything interesting to say.
I think a lot about this quote from Styles' interview with Zane Lowe: "I think sometimes, with therapy as an example, you open a bunch of doors in your house that you didn't know existed. You find all these rooms you get to explore." Harry's House let the listeners into Styles' house, and in his mind that meant rummaging through these rooms with him. In reality, the rooms were roped off; the listeners could glimpse inside but see nothing more than a quick tableau of his life. You might be in Harry's House but it's a guided, polished tour, with everything you see still obsessively curated
This is something from reddit that explained my thoughts on album perfectly
while i do feel a closer and more real/human connection to the record than this review does - "Even the happier tracks on the album carry notes of wistfulness" this point especially is probably where i make a particular connection - this was an interesting read, thank you for sharing it!
