It's out! It's done! It's published!
Alexander Benedict-St. Albans and Julian St. Albans-Benedict are back for another book! Fourth in the Consulting Magic series, A Flutter of Fae starts the next phase in Alex and Julian's lives. As Guardians of the Charmer's Way and newlywed husbands, they're learning to function together as a household and a part of society. Alex has taken the role of Charmer while Julian is becoming a sought-after Grower, but their busy new life hasn't gotten them out of Alex's previous job -- solving murders. When a high elf turns up dead right in front of the Queen's Way, Her Majesty herself requests Alex and Julian's input on the problem. The problem is, their victim doesn't seem to have any enemies, or even serious business interests on the human side of the way. With no clear motive and time ticking away, Alex and Julian have to live their new, complicated lives while still making time for old friends, new acquaintances, and, of course, solving the murder. Tags: m/m Romance, Established Relationship, Modern Fantasy, Murder Mystery, Adult Communication, Found Family, Food, Magic as Science, Science as Magic
NOTE: This is very much not a standalone book, so go read Untrue Love for 99c if you're curious about the series, lol.

2000, Cristalina, Rezende.
beginning | previous | next Transcript under the cut
Cristalina, Rezende - 11:30 AM
(sigh)
[Agnes] Christinne, I need you to listen to me very clearly.
St. Albans sets a new standard in society that is different from your previous school.
So, I need you to try harder than before. Smile. Stay proper. And, most importantly, avoid any behavior that may disappoint me or your father.
[Christinne] Don't worry, Mother. I have never disappointed you before, and I won't do so now.
[Agnes] Precisely, but know that your attendance at this school is very beneficial for our family.
[Christinne] But… why all this, Mother? Is there anything else I should know?
...
[Agnes] You know enough, Christinne. It is about a new beginning…
A new chance to be seen in our society.
(heavy breathing)
[Agnes] Oh, perfect. We have arrived.
St. Albans Academy - 12:00 AM
[Trevor] It's our final year, guys. I’m already missing Augustin's vacation home, his birthday party, the break from school…
[Fabi] Well… That sucks for me and Lydia, we still have two more! Can't believe we'll have to go a whole year without you…
[Otto] We should totally hang out at the Espadas' more often, right? I mean, just talking about it makes me feel like I'm getting roasted by Calla's sun…
[Augustin] Maybe next year, guys… Sorry…
I'm gonna be pretty busy this year. Got a lot of stuff to do and learn, and I'll also be keeping up with my parents' chaotic schedule of commitments.
[Otto] You're the heir to the throne, Gus. You already made a living! You've got all the perks that come with it, so why not enjoy them?
[Augustin] I think that's an even greater reason for me to try harder this year, don't you think? [Otto] Augustin?
Augustin... What are you lookin' at?
[Augustin] At my future... I hope.

What does it mean to know a place you’ve never been?
With her three, ground-level sculptural works in A Movement in Every Direction: Legacies of the Great Migration, Leslie Hewitt explores the migration of her family, who were upholsterers and small-business owners, from Georgia to Chicago.
This journey is represented through the materials of her sculpture, which stand ceremoniously as fragments of ancestral memory brought together through their relationship with each other. The use of familiar glass vessels, such as the cups, dishes, and jars seen here, further elicits a profound sense of family and home.
Discover Hewitt’s story and more as part of #GreatMigrationBkM through June 25.

"Face Fright"
On "Peeping Tom" -- In A Concise Dictionary of Phrase and Fable (1993), B. A. Phythian writes:
Leofric, Earl of Mercia and one of the most powerful men in England during the first half of the 11th century, imposed certain taxes which his wife, Lady Godiva, patroness of Coventry, asked him to remove. He promised to do so if she would ride naked through the city, which she accordingly did in 1040.
But most medieval scholars agree that the ride never took place. Daniel Donoghue, professor of English and American literature and language, explains that contemporary historians did not consider Godiva particularly noteworthy; what little was written about her at the time mentioned her merely as the wife of a famous man. He points out that two centuries after her death, chroniclers in the Benedictine abbey of St Albans inserted a fully developed narrative into their Latin histories: the legend of Lady Godiva was born.
So it starts with Flores Historiarum (Flowers of History – completed in 1235?), by Roger de Wendover (died 1236), a monk at the abbey of St Albans. And goes from there.
An edict forbidding the town’s citizens to gaze on Godiva during her ride was added to the legend.
The creation of Tom specifically appears to originate with a 17th century misreading of a 16th century painting. The painting that the soldiers describe is most probably Lady Godiva (1586), by Adam von Noort. It shows Lady Godiva riding through the empty streets, and a bearded man looking out an upstairs window from a building on the right-hand side. This man is probably Leofric, but his identity is not obvious, which might have contributed to the emergence of the figure of the voyeur.
Eventually, the voyeur was provided with an occupation; in the above-mentioned book, Daniel Donoghue explains:
As a tailor he would conveniently be equipped with an awl to bore a viewing hole, but the occupation would be appropriate for other reasons as well. Proverbially, tailors were thought to be less than fully men even to the point of suggesting their emasculation (“Nine tailors make the man”). So, for example, when a tailor in a fairy tale accomplishes something heroic, his deficient manhood throws the magical transformation into greater relief. In addition, the tailor’s business of making clothes, in contrast to Godiva’s nakedness, may have added to the thematic appeal.
So. There you go. Peeping Tom. Expanding the universe in crevices and nooks within the stories we sell to ourselves built off of small titillation and moralizing.

Might as well post this here, this was originally going to be a larger worldbuilding project where I did an imagined world 50 years in the future (This was started in 2021 so set in 2071), but I was busy with other things at the time and ended up moving on from it with this being the only result, but I'm still pretty happy with how it turned out.
So, this is what I imagined the nations of the British Isles to look like in the year 2071.
It went through quite a few changes, I originally used historic borders for Brittany and Cornwall rather than modern ones, and had the Northern Isles and Cumbria as part of the PCC, before deciding this way would be more realistic.
I made the flags before the map if I remember correctly. A lot of decisions in the abandoned wider world of this project were made so I could make cool flags for newly formed countries, rather than out of the likelihood of them actually forming.
The English flag could've just been St George's Cross, but I wanted to make a flag, so I tried to design one with the goal of looking as much like the Union Jack as possible, so I merged St George's Cross with St Alban's Cross, the flag of Mercia.
The Pan-Celtic Commonwealth flag is based on this design, with my own spin on it (limited by what shapes I was good enough with Adobe Illustrator to create), I think the central pattern has a name but I can't remember what.

🔸 King’s Cross, Euston Road July 1899. A busy scene outside the station, with horse drawn traffic going about their business and competing for space. Near the bottom left, a newspaper placard announces the execution of Mary Ansell. Mary Ann Ansell, a house-maid, was hanged at St Albans, on 19th July 1899 for poisoning her sister, Caroline, who was an inmate in an asylum. Her intention appeared to be to obtain 11 pounds, from an insurance cover on Caroline which she had taken out. Before her eventual execution there was considerable public pressure for a reprieve, on the grounds of her gender, youth and perceived lack of mental capacity (both of herself, and other members of her family). As against that, there was a significant reluctance within the Home Office to reprieve a poisoner, since it was seen as an easy but premeditated act. Her case thus received a measure of Parliamentary attention. In subsequent years the case was used to discuss the limits to criminal responsibility. Best Coffee Brands From All Over the Country
Your morning latte deserves a better bean.
While it’s hard to argue with the delicious hit of serotonin that comes from visiting your favorite coffee shop (not to mention the joy of supporting a small business), I’d say it’s still worth it to have a homemade caffeinated beverage that doesn’t require you to get high. shoes, a coat, or even pants. For many of us, that means investing in a decent pour-over and keeping a carton or two of dairy-free milk (I’m a fan of Minor Figures Barista Blend) in the fridge for frothing. To others, it may seem like a high-end espresso machine that can deliver a flawless cortado or latte (no art included). Regardless of how involved your home coffee station is, you’ll need beans, ideally the ones your barista would approve of.
intellectual cafe
Courtesy of Intelligentsia
“I first found out about Intelligentsia coffee when I bought a Christmas present for my brother — I dove deep into the good quality coffee beans and found a selection of their blends. He can confirm that it was an excellent gift, and after trying the coffee myself I can confirm that it is fantastic. Founded in 1995, Intelligentsia was a notable player in the third-wave coffee movement (essentially, a shift toward an emphasis on better-quality, better-sourced coffee). Their house blend is my favorite roast, and it’s everything I want in my first cup of coffee. It’s well balanced, not too acidic, and the standout tasting note (for me) is the milk chocolate.” — Merlyn Miller, Social Media Editor
787 coffee
“A 787 coffee shop recently opened in my neighborhood and it immediately became essential to me. (I’m not normally into novelty espresso drinks, but their horchata latte is now an integral part of my nights.) The company grows, processes, and roasts all of its beans from its coffee farms in Maricao, Puerto Rico, without the involvement of third-party distributors or roasters. In addition to being fresh, delicious, and sustainably sourced, 787 beans can now be ordered by anyone with a monthly subscription.” — María Yagoda, Senior Editor
coffee partners
“My vote goes to my Australian friends at Partners for their quality, roast, and commitment to sustainable farming and production. They source their beans from direct farm relationships and their single-origin beans are hard to beat. My favorite is El Ramo, a beautiful medium to light roast (many roasters tend to want to roast dark coffee to the center in the US, burning the roast). They roast to order and offer whatever grind you want if that’s your thing.” — Melanie Hansche, Associate Editor
Cafe Sey
“When I’m in the mood for a beautifully bright, acidic yet balanced cup of coffee, Sey is my go-to. This Nordic-style roaster not only produces amazing light roast coffee but is passionate about the sustainability of the coffee industry. Their in-season beans are packaged in beautiful, elegant boxes, each indicating both the source and the producer for complete transparency. If you can visit their Brooklyn cafe in person, I highly recommend it for good coffee, prepared right in front of you by their friendly and knowledgeable staff. For a fun at-home experience, Sey also offers a monthly coffee subscription, where you can have one to four boxes of their select seasonal beans delivered right to your door.” — Elsa Saatela, Senior Digital Producer
brio coffee
“In the heat of the miserable pandemic, but once travel was even remotely possible again, I headed to Rome to take my daughter to her first year of college there, except three weeks before I was supposed to leave, I realized that my passport had expired. . Not good! Through a total panic app, some questionable passport issuance services, and way more money than is reasonable, I ended up with a last-minute renewal appointment in St. Albans City, Vermont at 8:30 am. to put. on a Wednesday, a nifty 18 miles from the Canadian border and an even niftier seven hours drive from my Brooklyn apartment.
Do you know what you need at 8:00 am? to put. when you arrive in a small Vermont town after a seven-hour drive before dawn? Coffee. Very good coffee. And a lot.

"Settlers and Homesteads of Brainardsville: A Tale of Industry and Enterprise"
by James Morrison, based on "Early Brainardsville History", by Oscar F. Chase In Vermont they settled, my kin of old Then westward they migrated, their story told Bangor in New York, where they did reside In eighteen thirty, with family by their side
In eighteen thirty-seven, I was born In Bangor, where I drew my first breath at dawn In eighteen forty-three, we moved away To East Bellmont, where we planned to stay
Stopping at my sister's, the farm now owned By James Wright, where her log house was honed Then we moved north to Chateaugay's dense woods Where our neighbors were scarce, our hopes understood
Amid the woods and the wilds we built anew With every hand helping, our spirits grew The days spent there, were as happy as can be In my memory, they remain dear to me
Through the experience of my father and peers A school district formed, to lessen our fears The first schoolhouse built on Jacob Kennison's land Abram his son, our first teacher, in command
Miss Eliza Merrill taught our first class Followed by Miss Olive Miles, with great pizzazz Miss Lestina Merrill, another on the list And S. F. Storrs, who we never missed
When a sawmill was built, people began to drift The joint school district discontinued, spirits lift A new school house built, at Brainardsville it stood In eighteen fifty-four, it was made good
Calvin Pike was the first to teach Later, S. F. Storrs, with fame to reach Over sixty terms, he taught with skill Many outsiders came, his lessons to fill
The pioneers who settled here were brave and strong, From far and wide they came, their hearts in song. The Lamsons and Kennisons, great choppers all, Cleared many a farm, but soon heeded the call.
Wild beasts roamed free, bears and lynx and deer, Wolf howls and panther screams oft filled the air. But woodsmen with their axes made it clear, That the big game would no longer be found there.
Thomas Harran, a great trapper, caught the bear, His son George built a sawmill, progress in the air. The first known built by Ira Emerson, block house grand, Intended for a tavern, but served as a dwelling land.
The first sawmill on the river, Chamberlain's name, Meigs & Weed built the dam, progress to claim. A. H. Miller, of Malone, then took the lead, Lumbering and milling, a prosperous deed.
Fish & Van Allen of Albany bought it in '54, Remodeled the mill, "Yankee gong" to explore. James Coates ran the mill, they did large business, Brainard of St. Albans took the reins, success a witness.
He built a grist mill, durable and lasting, G. L. Havens his local agent, the future forecasting. Havens bought the property, a stirring and influential man, A large mercantile business, farming, and lumbering his plan.
About 1877, the mill sold to a new firm, Popeville to name, Havens moved to Colorado, the past never the same. The first post office, Chateaugay Lake, Smith Payne the master, Later moved to Brainard's store, the name to Brainardsville alter.
The history of Chateaugay Lake, rich and grand, Pioneers and progress, the land to command. Wild beasts and woodsmen, progress and change, The future to hold, the past to arrange.
Amid the permanent settlers, a name doth shine, Cyrus Merrill, son of Paul, the prime, Purchased a vast tract of hardwood land, Maple sugar made, chief sugar maker, grand. From 1,500 to 2,000 trees, he did tap, Farming it, teaching school, there's no gap, For forty winters he taught with care, In wisdom and knowledge, many did share.
Benjamin Pratt, an early settler of the land, A son he had, Harvey Pratt, quite grand, A large tract of land he did acquire, Building sturdy frames, with heart on fire. His father and mother both here did rest, And Harvey followed, putting them to best. Four farms emerged from the land in sale, Now Thomas Baker occupies, without fail.
Benniah Huntey, too, came here to rest, Early in our history, he was blessed, With a farm adjoining the Pratt homestead, An industrious man, his toil and sweat. In the sixties, his wife died in sorrow, To Beekmantown, he left for tomorrow. His farm he sold to V. S. Huntey's hand, An onward journey, an unplanned.
Very early in our history, Alonson Roberts' fame, Owned real estate, Chateaugay, his claim to name, Ashery he built, 1850 was the year, On the brook, Antoine Cromp was sent to hear. Canadian Cromp made salt for Roberts' boon, Lived in a log house, cornered, a boon. After the ashery's closure, Cromp did stay, Horse trader, he became well known in the way.
Outsiders began to call this place Crompville, From ashery to horse trade, it's the thrill. The post office known as Brainardsville, The other seldom referred to, it's not a thrill. Burning timber into ashes, the way to make, Salt for French Mills, trade to partake. If these words deserve a place in county history, My heart shall sing with joy, it's no mystery.
James Morrison

Why Regular Financial Health Checks Matter for St Albans Residents and Businesses
Financial health checks are essential for large corporations or high-income earners, individuals, and small business owners. Whether you manage your personal finances or oversee the daily operations of a business in St Albans, evaluating your financial status is crucial. These assessments help identify risks, uncover opportunities, and ensure financial stability.
Understanding Financial Health Checks
A financial health check is a detailed review of your current financial situation. It looks at your income, expenses, savings, investments, debts, and overall financial goals. For businesses, this process involves analysing cash flow, profit margins, liabilities, and compliance with regulatory requirements.
Maintaining strong financial health ensures personal and professional growth in a community like St Albans, where individuals and businesses contribute to a thriving local economy.
Benefits for Individuals
Improved Budgeting: Regular financial reviews can highlight spending patterns, making creating a budget that works easier. This is particularly important when managing rising living costs or planning for future milestones like buying a home or funding education.
Debt Management: Identifying high-interest debts allows you to restructure or repay them faster. Whether it’s a mortgage or credit card debt, keeping it under control prevents long-term financial strain.
Savings Growth: By monitoring your financial progress, you can identify areas where savings can be increased. Whether building an emergency fund or planning for retirement, periodic checks ensure you’re on the right track.
Reduced Stress: Financial uncertainty is a major cause of stress. Reviewing your financial situation gives you clarity and confidence, reducing anxiety about unexpected expenses or future challenges.
Benefits for Businesses
Cash Flow Optimisation: Cash flow is the backbone of business operations in St Albans. Regular financial checks can reveal inefficiencies in managing money, ensuring enough liquidity to cover expenses and invest in growth.
Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring your financial records meet Australian Taxation Office (ATO) requirements is critical. Regular reviews help avoid penalties and ensure your business complies with tax laws and regulations.
Profitability Insights: Financial reviews can pinpoint which areas of your business are performing well and which need improvement. Understanding these details can guide better decision-making and long-term success.
Preparedness for Opportunities and Risks: Businesses often face opportunities that require quick financial decisions, such as purchasing equipment or expanding operations. Regular health checks ensure you are financially prepared to act when opportunities arise.
Common Financial Challenges in St Albans
Both residents and businesses in St Albans face unique financial challenges. The rising cost of living, especially housing, can strain individuals' budgets. Maintaining competitive pricing while managing operational costs is a constant challenge for businesses.
By conducting regular financial health checks, you can identify and address these challenges before they escalate. For example:
Residents: Adjusting household expenses to meet mortgage repayments or rental costs.
Businesses: Planning for seasonal fluctuations in revenue and staying competitive in the local market.
How Often Should You Perform a Financial Health Check?
While there’s no universal rule, a financial health check every six months is a good starting point. Quarterly reviews might be more appropriate for businesses, especially during rapid growth or market volatility.
Seeking Professional Assistance
Although you can handle essential financial reviews independently, consulting with a financial expert ensures a thorough analysis. Financial professionals like tax accountants in St Albans understand the local financial landscape and can provide valuable insights. They can help you navigate complex situations like tax obligations, investment planning, or debt restructuring.
Conclusion
For residents and businesses in St Albans, regular financial health checks are more than just a precaution—they’re a proactive step towards achieving financial stability and growth. Reviewing your financial situation regularly gives you clarity, control, and confidence to make informed decisions. Whether you want to build a secure future for your family or expand your business, maintaining good financial health is key to long-term success.

No margin for error
Its been a busy day at the BLS. There were some lovely pictures of the ground and the pitch looking ready for action before the flurry of transfer activity covered elsewhere.
I will miss Ezio Touray. He has been a rare bright light in recent times so him going, and where he is going does not sit right.
Its mitigated, of course, by Jake McCarthy coming back. He never should have joined Poole Town in the summer so that (as Bristol Exile mentioned on X) is putting a wrong right.
Aside from all of that we have the small matter of what Barry Fry would call a 66 pointer tomorrow when St Albans City visit.
This game has a rivalry that geographically it shouldn't. But that promotion battle almost two decades ago and Ian Ridley leaving us before ending up there, means that there would be something riding on this one, even if it wasn't a relegation battle.
After decent draws with top sides Farnborough and Weston Super Mare, sandwiched with a win at Aveley, there is no margin for error tomorrow. Lose and all that good work will be for nothing.
With so many draws a single defeat to end our run will be enough to put the manager straight back in the spotlight.
It looks like Super Jake will get a second debut but for all that creativity there needs to be a forward to knock it in. And our current best fit one is probably going to pass him on the road about Wool as he heads to Poole in the opposite direction.
No idea what will happen in this match, its the Terras isn't it ! But my fingers will be crossed for a win.
