I'll extend what I've said about Anne Rice (in a post I'm too lazy to find) to Tim Burton. They are the Hot Topic of the gothic genre. They have a lot of cool ideas, characters, and concepts if you care to sort through the garbage which is the majority of what they've created.

What are you currently reading?
I've been having trouble getting into just one book lately, so I've currently been reading parts of several books, hoping one of them hooks me. Guess what? That's literally never worked any time I've ever tried it, and yet, I still do it constantly. It always ends up taking me longer to read everything than if I just read the books one after the other.
Anyway, this is what I'm in the middle of right now, all of which are too interesting to keep me from focusing on just one at a time:
•Lady First: The World of First Lady Sarah Polk (BOOK | KINDLE) by Amy Greenberg •The Victorian Internet: The Remarkable Story of the Telegraph and the Nineteenth Century's On-Line Pioneers (BOOK | KINDLE) by Tom Standage •King Faisal of Saudi Arabia: Personality, Faith and Times (BOOK | KINDLE) by Alexei Vassiliev
I'm also still on the Richard Francis Burton kick that I mentioned last year, so I've been reading these too: •Captain Sir Richard Francis Burton: The Secret Agent Who Made the Pilgrimage to Mecca, Discovered the Kama Sutra, and Brought the Arabian Nights to the West by Edward Rice •The City of the Saints: Among the Mormons and Across the Rocky Mountains to California (BOOK/PUBLIC DOMAIN LINK) by Sir Richard Francis Burton

TEEN IN A TIM BURTON MOVIE DIET 🦴🌫️
(inspired by @honeysugarfree)
.˚⊹.🎃₊˚𖦹⋆
You wake up with one thing on your mind: going out for a walk in the woods. But you can’t. You’re a teenager who has school, and your parents would kill you if you skipped school.
It’s too early to eat anything. Pass the time playing with your cat or simply reading by the window as the sun rises.
School is so boring when all you’re craving is a nice cup of warm soup or hot chocolate prepared by your mum. Whatever, you’ll suffer in silence and snack on whatever fruits you threw into your bag this morning.✧˖°.☾
For lunch, you’ll have leftovers from yesterday. roasted/baked/boiled veggies accompanied by rice or wheat. you don’t eat it all; it’s cold, and not that nice at all… Maybe your parents packed you a sandwich instead? make sure you don’t eat the crusts, though. they’re the worst part.
If you’re lucky, you might’ve even added one of your bakes as dessert (low cal pastry/cookie), or a small yoghurt. if you didn’t, don’t fret. your parent didn’t forget to include a fruit or veggie for health.
(¬ ´ཀ` )¬
Back home at last — not before you went on a small walk, though. your parents were worried about where you’d gone off too again, and you’re greeted by a warm broth/soup, or some more baked veggies.
you don’t finish your plate unless your walk was very tiring. you’re too eager to finish that book you started!
Once in a while, you might be allowed a piece of cake or some hot chocolate. not everyday, though. that would be bad for your teeth!
End the day with a cup of tea, reading under a warm blanket with a piece of your favourite chocolate or sweet. 🍂☕️🐈⬛
MEAL IDEAS I LOVE:
Chickpeas in tomato sauce with rice
Whole bread sandwich without the crust: tomato, cheese and cucumber (ham if you want, i’m vegetarian c:)
Ratatouille or Shakshuka with wheat/bulgur
Apple sauce cookies (i can share a good recipe if you want)
Pasta/zucchini gratin
Lasagna (spinach or veggies with tomato sauce - or mince, once again, i’m vegetarian)
potatoes (sweet is even better) with broccoli
Mushrooms with bread
Tomato salad (vinegar, herbs, olive oil)
Lentil/corn cakes with cream cheese
Pumpkin pie
Vegetable broth (or chicken) with vegetable dices
Potato soup
Tomato orzo soup
Mashed potatoes with lentils
Lentil soup
Beetroot (it’s so good even on it own)
REMEMBER!
You always prefer ‘halloween’ themed pastries — involving apples, pumpkin, carrots…
Eating isn’t a bother, you’re just a slow eater. don’t hesitate to share your love for sweets, while keeping consummation low.
You get tired of veggies so much! never finish a meal you don’t like.
Your favourite candy is liquorice, and most halloween themed ones like acorn or hard candy
Keep the chocolate low. it’s too heavy and nauseating!
If you must, have a piece of nutella/peanut butter and jelly toast, oats, or milk with fruits in the morning. i promise it’s much better than those ‘healthy’ alternatives (makes you satisfies and low calorie if you only have one)
No crisps — they’re too oily and dirty your books. Pop corn is so much better (and lower in cols) — caramel or pumpkin spice is a staple!
Cinnamon on apples… the best treat!
If you ever eat out with family, eat only a third of the meal and get the rest to pack. it’s so good you want to make it last!!
Bake and cook as much as you can! This will make your parents understand what you like, and not push to make you eat those gross overly fat foods.
Try to stay under 1,000 kcals, but don’t count calories obsessively. keep portions small and always leave a third of your plate.
Have fun!
(i’ll make a moodboard with meals etc, i hope you enjoy!)

recently i’ve been going to the library during the hottest time of day to read and enjoy the ac. usually i have to walk a few laps around the place to find a seat because everyone else also thought it would a good idea to enjoy the ac. today i found a nice reading chair and i sat there for a couple hours reading Becoming Ms. Burton (memoir about Susan Burton’s life, mass incarceration, and particularly about being a systems-impacted mother struggling with addiction. i definitely recommend it!).
today the library had a paint and sip program for adults that they announced over the loudspeaker. i decided to join in, and i got to do some watercolor painting, drink some tea, eat some rice crackers, and chat with some nice strangers. library win

guys i’m throwing a fucking tantrum, apparently Tim Burton called Anne up in ‘92 and Anne straight up didn’t have time to talk to him like imagine what a wonderfully cursed timeline we could’ve lived in with a Tim Burton/Anne Rice collab

“Girls Night 3 - the feast”
Wednesday emerged from behind the curtain with a cart full of milk, cottage cheese, lemonade, orange juice, tomato juice, bread, rice and tortillas as well as more salsa and guacamole. She arranged them all on the challenge table
Xavier: hey there, gorgeous! The guac and spa waters are delicious did you make them?
Harley, pushing a cart with the bowls of the chicken nuggets they prepared for the challenge and serving bowls, Pippa, with the hot sauce bottles, Alyssa and Frank each with more agua fresca. They put them all in their places
Harley: I made the guacamole. And what the fuck did you just call the agua fresca I made?
Xavier: spa water. I saw it on TikTok. I love the guac but it would be much better if you used apple cider vinegar and put some pico on the top!
Harley: Wednesday? Who is this clown?
Everyone was in shock at who had just emerged from the curtains
Xavier: who you calling a clown? I said what I said. Your guac is good. Great even. But the best guac is made with apple cider vinegar
Harley: lime. Lots of lime. Jalapeño and cilantro. Lemon is acceptable if you don’t have lime. But I prefer lime. Don’t you dare say you add peas
Xavier: oh my god! I knew it was missing something! Yes!
Harley: dude? Do you even know any LatinoHispanic people?
Xavier: I know Wednesday! She’s my girlfriend
Wednesday: I would rather pull my tongue out than put peas in my guacamole. And for the last time I am not your girlfriend
Kent peered out from the curtains
Kent: um Wednesday? Can you and the crew come back into the room for a sec?
Wednesday, Harley, Alyssa, Pippa and Frank returned behind the curtains. Xavier tries to follow but Ajax put his foot out and tripped him
Xavier: -on the ground after face planting- what the hell dude! You tripped me! Kent can be in the room?! Why can’t I?
Enid: I am not allowed in my room right now, Xavier
Divina, Yoko and Bianca walked up
Bianca: are we not going to talk about who was just out here?
Yoko: Harley made the guac, salsa and agua fresca?
Divina: and Alyssa, Frank and Pippa are here too?
Xavier: who?
Ajax: Harley Lopez-Ortega, Frankie George, Alyssa Yasutake, and Pippa Waller.
Enid: can you believe she got them to come to our Girls Night? Wednesday actually befriended them. Can you believe that? She said that Harley has really embraced Hela and is clashing with Ms Rowling brilliantly
Behind the curtain in the dorm room.
Principal Thropp: have you started the hot sauce challenge?
Wednesday: not yet. We only took out the food
Harley: -seeing Mr Burton- are we going to have to cut the night short?
Mr Burton: oh not at all. Elphaba will be filming. Doug wants to join the challenge
Frankie: are you sure? Jackson and I room with Harley and she makes some pretty spicy food.
Alyssa: I love Korean and Thai food And some of Harley’s food is spicy
Pippa: I’ve seen people gag and cry eating the same wings Harley hardly broke a sweat over
Mr Johnson: bring it on! They don’t call me The Foundation for nothing
Harley: we did prep for four people to take the challenge. Myself, Wednesday, the clown and one more
Wednesday: is Mr Johnson going to fit through the window?

I hate the notion that book Louis is going through a gothic tragedy but show Louis isn’t and because of that the show loses it “gothic flare” or whatever the fuck. Show Louis is going through a tragedy that’s both realistic and gothic, its just not one that white goths can relate to and one that they can and do contribute to irl and white goths pretending to be bullied like they’re forever stuck in the fucking 90s is why being in goth spaces when you’re a poc is tiring. Anne Rice and other white goth creators like Tim Burton also contributed to the racist toxicity in goth communities as well.

EVANGELION
Neon Genesis Evangelion was my whole identity, when I was fifteen.
I was an angsty boy from a small town. I longed to have a fiery redhead be mean to me (or to just meet one); to be part of world-ending events (or to be part of a clique that mattered); to pilot a god (or to just feel powerful in my own body).
As I grew up I've managed to sublimate those longings, I guess?
All my middle-age aches tell me my body is friend who cannot be taken for granted; their are not a flesh-tool. On good writing days, I do feel like I make some meaning in the world.
And, while I've still never met a fiery redhead---I no longer see Westerners as aspirational, so meeting them now feels human instead of symbolic.
+
Last year I watched the Rebuild series through. I liked it! Parts of the new movies remind me of Shin Godzilla (my favourite Hideaki Anno work).
Some notes:
+
1. CAD leads to overdesign
True when Tim Burton got CGI; true when Games Workshop started to sculpt minis on computers; true for the nonsense Evas, Unit 05 onwards, and that over-busy flying SDF-1 knockoff. I mean, what the fuck am I looking at here???
And while some stuff like the Eva 07s are neat (they've got these skull + pharaoh-chin designs), it's moot because you can barely see them, because they only appear in scenes like this:
So dumb, so dumb.
The new angels were sick, though. Because when you overdesign by computer you pass into the realm of the inhuman, and the angels are supposed to be eldritch inhuman creatures.
Sahaquiel was my favourite re-designed angel. It got these ridges that look like leaping evangelical choirs.
+
2. Meta-indulgence
I've aged out of thinking that breaking the fourth wall is clever. I did like the meta stuff in last film, though? Calls back on the series finale + End of Evangelion. But crucially it felt really different.
It felt like a satisfying (and kinder!) end to the characters' stories; more satisfying closure for the fans. It felt like Anno was saying goodbye to his demons, putting the franchise to bed, and turning off the lights. Moving on.
(All instantly rendered moot when they announce a new Evangelion project / tie-in / whatever. Because of course they will. Because Capitalism.)
+
3. Rebuilding
The best part of Thrice Upon A Time is the first third of the film: minutiae from a community of survivors trying to pick themselves up from the end of the world. Planting rice, arranging hot baths, playing with pregnant cats.
Evangelion finally got some actual, undashed hope.
The whole movie could've just been this---the characters staying in this small town, dealing with their demons, learning how to feel and heal and actually live the lives that were stolen from them.
That would've been a really good way to end, honestly.
+
4. Child soldiers
The most obvious thing about Evangelion is this:
its protagonists, the pilots of the giant mechas, are emotionally and physically tortured preteens, gaslit and manipulated by every adult they meet.
This is a show about the use and abuse of children. My teenage self never clocked it. Hm, I wonder why!
Maybe because I didn't yet have the discursive tools to understand that stuff; 2000 was a different time, after all.
Maybe I didn't care. Surrogate mommy please kiss me and dangle that sex-carrot so I'll go kill the world, oh yeah! Use me, mommy!
Because when you're that young you'd do anything to be treated as important, as an adult. You want to be used, because being used means you are legitimate.
And nothing is as legitimate as suffering.

anne rice, pseudointellectual extraordinaire, managed to squeeze into the tale of the body thief references to: "sailing to byzantium" and "the dolls" by william butler yeats, a tale of two cities, anna karenina, the postman always rings twice, lolita, "the tyger" by william blake, a tree grows in brooklyn, "the thing on the doorstep" by h.p. lovecraft, "eyes of the mummy" by robert bloch, goethe's faust, jeffrey burton russell, mircea eliade, john milton, marcus aurelius, hart crane, george bernard shaw, diogenes, thomas aquinas, jacques maritain, pierre teilhard de chardin, dostoyevsky, albert camus, and john keats. at one point lestat uses the alias "sebastian melmoth," which was a pseudonym used by oscar wilde, itself a reference to melmoth the wanderer by charles maturin. later lestat goes by the last name "wilde." he also references othello and at one point asserts that he is "not time's fool." the alias "sheridan blackwood" might be a reference to sheridan dufferin given rice's interest in art, and i assume she got "alexander stoker" from bram. the movies that appear or are referenced are suspicion (1941), vice versa (1988), all of me (1984), the company of wolves (1984), beauty and the beast (1946), the dead (1987), it's a wonderful life (1946), and body and soul (1947). characters see or reference art by rembrandt (specifically the syndics of the draper's guild), picasso (three separate times), willem de kooning, jasper johns, andy warhol, monet, and edward hopper. there's also a reference to the actor rutger hauer. uhhh i think that's it but holler if you caught one i didn't
#iwtv#vampire posting#i'm sorry i don't know why i did this. there's no use for this. i just love making lists#the show is really keeping in the spirit by making the paintings in the background/so many of the books identifiable#interesting that all the movies are either from the 80s (the last 10yrs relative to when the book was written) or the 40s#(anne rice's early childhood)
