I mentioned that, as of Saturday, the Lebanese health minister said he was only aware of 11 victims of the massive airstrike that destroyed four buildings in the southern suburbs of Beirut.
It has not increased since then.
How could that be?
Lebanese newspaper L'Orient le Jour (French) looks for the presumed hundreds of victims, and cannot find them.
But they do find a number of people who say that the entire neighborhood was already empty before the airstrikes.
Following the attack, the site was sealed off by Hezbollah security services as they searched for their leader. ...Most of the neighborhood’s residents had reportedly left the area the week before the attack, in a “natural evacuation,” according to the rescuer. “As the airstrikes (against the southern suburbs in recent days) increased, people fled. When the Maamoura neighborhood was bombed, there was no one there, and it was the same in Jamous and Kafa’at,” he said, referring to the strikes that took place throughout the night of September 27. The deadly strike came after a week of unprecedented attacks on Hezbollah, including the detonation of thousands of booby-trapped pagers and walkie-talkies that killed some 30 people and wounded thousands more across the country. In response, members of the Shiite party went door-to-door in the southern suburbs and advised people to leave their homes and seek shelter elsewhere. Rukaya, who has lived for 40 years in Burj al-Barajneh, the neighborhood beside Haret Hreik where Nasrallah was killed, told L’Orient Today that people knew the place was vulnerable to attack from the Israelis and had started to leave earlier that week. "You could hear crickets across the Burj" she said.
Twenty-four hours after the strike, the Health Ministry announced that 11 people had been killed and 108 wounded in the Israeli strikes the previous day, but it did not specify where or when the deaths occurred, or whether Nasrallah and other possible Hezbollah victims were included in the death toll. The enormity of the damage caused by the strikes raised fears that the death toll could be much higher. The day after the attack, outgoing Health Minister Firas Abiad said at a press conference that the death toll could rise. Saad el-Ahmar stressed that on September 30, the search operations were almost over. The teams continue to clear the roads and sweep the area "to make sure that no bodies have been forgotten," the rescuer explained. However, he believes that the toll provided by the ministry should not increase significantly, given that it seems that very few people were present.
The airstrike the previous week that killed some 15 members of Hezbollah's Radwan unit was in the same neighborhood, so that might have prompted residents to flee.

The Israeli occupation continues to intensify its wide-scale aggression on Lebanon, targeting villages and towns in the South, the Bekaa region, and the Southern Suburb of Beirut. In its latest wave of Israeli strikes, the Southern Suburb of Beirut was hit by a series of violent air raids, which resumed early Tuesday. An Al Mayadeen correspondent reported that more than 26 airstrikes have targeted the area in the last 24 hours alone. The Israeli occupation forces also continued targeting rescue teams and civil defense workers, attempting to prevent them from reaching the affected areas. Reports indicate that civil defense and ambulance vehicles are unable to enter the Southern Suburb due to the intense Israeli bombardment there. In one devastating attack, fires broke out following a strike on the Tahwitat al-Ghadir area after airstrikes targeted fuel tanks. Flames continued to rage in the aftermath of the air raid. Simultaneously, Israeli artillery shelled the heights of Jabal al-Saddaneh on the outskirts of al-Arqoub in southern Lebanon, one Al Mayadeen correspondent reported. Artillery fire also struck Alma al-Shaab and Naqoura, while Israeli warplanes targeted the city of Tyre near Hiram Hospital and the city of Nabatiyeh. Additionally, a drone strike destroyed a motorcycle in the southern town of Ramadiyah. Other towns, including Yater, Khiam, and Tafahtha, were also hit by Israeli airstrikes. In the Bekaa region, Israeli warplanes bombed several towns in both western and eastern Bekaa, resulting in numerous civilian casualties. A massacre was reported in the town of al-Khader in the northern Bekaa. Two women and a child were among the five martyred in the attack. The humanitarian situation is dire, particularly with the repeated targeting of Lebanon's health infrastructure. The World Health Organization (WHO) has confirmed 36 attacks on healthcare facilities in Lebanon since the onset of October. The Israeli aggression, ongoing since October 8, 2023, has taken a devastating toll on Lebanon. According to the latest statistics from the Lebanese Ministry of Health, the death toll has risen to 2,083, with 9,869 people injured. 'Israel's' terror continues On Monday, the Israeli occupation launched an airstrike targeting the area between al-Laylaki and al-Mrayjeh in Beirut's Southern Suburb, Al Mayadeen's correspondent reported. This followed the 30 air raids the occupation launched on the Southern Suburb of Beirut throughout the night. According to Al Mayadeen's correspondent, some airstrikes deliberately targeted a gas station and medical equipment warehouses. As a result, massive explosions were seen and felt as flames erupted amid the impact. The areas aggressed included: al-Mrayjeh, al-Laylaki, Tahwitat al-Ghadeer, Burj el-Barajneh, Haret Hreik, and the vicinity of Beirut International Airport. Moreover, in one of the deadliest massacres in recent days, an Israeli raid on Baraachit killed 10 firefighters who were responding to earlier strikes in the area, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health. Similarly, at noon Saturday, an Israeli drone struck an area where Civil Defense and rescue operations attempted to lift the rubble following the intense aggression on al-Mrayjeh, forcing the crews to withdraw from the site immediately, as "Israel" stretches its tactics of obstructing rescue efforts.

Israel strikes Lebanon as Iran’s leader issues warning
Tensions in the Middle East continue to rise, with new Israeli strikes destroying Lebanon’s infrastructure.
Multiple Israeli strikes hit Beirut suburbs
Multiple Israeli airstrikes targeted areas in Beirut’s southern suburbs on Friday, with the explosions heard throughout the Lebanese capital. The series of airstrikes targeted the al-Jamiaa neighborhood and the Hay El Sellom area.
The Israeli army hit the neighbourhoods of Kafaat, Ruweis, Hay al-Sallum, Haret Hreik, Shiyah, the Burj al-Barajneh refugee camp and the suburbs of Hadas and Choueifat. They are all located around Rafic Hariri International Airport.
The Israel Defence Forces did not comment on the strikes, but had previously urged civilians in southern Beirut to evacuate.
Hezbollah leader temporarily buried over security concerns
Lebanese Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah has been temporarily buried in a secret location over fears that Israel might hold a large funeral, a source close to the group told AFP on Friday.
The source said after the Israeli airstrike killed the leader last week:
“Hassan Nasrallah has been temporarily buried until circumstances allow for a public funeral.”
The source added that holding a public funeral became impossible “due to Israeli threats to strike mourners and his burial site.”
A Lebanese official, who spoke to AFP on condition of anonymity, said Hezbollah had sought assurances from top Lebanese officials but had been unable to get any assurances from the US, a key Israeli ally, that Israel would not strike the public funeral.
Iranian supreme leader praises missile attack on Israel
Iran’s supreme leader on Friday praised a recent missile strike on Israel and said the country was ready to repeat it if necessary, state television reported.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, speaking at Friday prayers as leader for the first time in five years, called the missile strike a “brilliant” performance by the Iranian military.
Iran fired at least 180 rockets into Israel on Tuesday, the latest in a series of rapidly escalating attacks between Israel, Iran and its allies that threaten to bring the Middle East closer to a region-wide war. Israel said it had intercepted many of the missiles, and officials in Washington said US destroyers had assisted in Israel’s defence. Iran said most of its missiles hit their target. No casualties were reported.
Khamenei, 85, said in a 40-minute speech to thousands of people at Mosalla Mosque, Tehran’s main prayer site, that the Hamas-led attack on southern Israel nearly a year ago, on October 7, 2023, was a legitimate action by the Palestinian people. He also said Tuesday’s rocket attack was based on international law, the country’s laws and Islamic beliefs.
Khamenei called on countries from “Afghanistan to Yemen and from Iran to Gaza and Yemen” to be ready to act against the enemy and praised those who died in the process. He said:
“Our resisting people in Lebanon and Palestine, you brave fighters, you loyal and patient people, these martyrdoms and the blood that was shed shouldn’t shake your determination but make you more persistent.”
Khamenei gave half of the speech in Arabic as he addressed his comments to Arab nations. He last spoke at Friday prayers after the death of Revolutionary Guard General Qassem Soleimani, who was killed in a 2020 US drone strike in Baghdad.

Syrian film The Dream/al-Manam (1987) by Mohammad Malas
These are stills taken from Mohammad Malas’ documentary style film shot in Lebanese refugee camps for Palestinians fleeing from violence. He interviews them about the dreams they have, throughout which the film explores the conditions the refugees live in, as well as the ideas of longing, martyrdom and dispossession. Malas filmed in the camps of Sabra and Shatila and Burj el-Barajneh in Beirut, and Ain el-Helwe in Saida. Filming was done in 1981, before the Israeli invasion. It is likely some of the refugees interviewed were either killed or forced to flee again.

SPOTLIGHT FILMS: PREVIEW 14 OF THE OUTSTANDING SELECTIONS FOR THE MIAMI FILM FESTIVAL GEMS 2018
Photos provided by Miami Film Festival GEMS 2018
ANIMAL (Argentina, Spain, 2018) Director: Armando Bo In Spanish, with English subtitles
GEMS Synopsis: Antonio is a middle-aged family man with traditional views and a high-ranking job title. He has lived firmly by the rules instilled within him by his parents and grandparents and has no intention of reevaluating his priorities until he is shaken to his core by an extreme situation. Antonio is forced to set aside his beliefs and his limited understanding of life, as he strives to follow his most primal of instincts. Armando Bo's thought-provoking and darkly comic thriller has been praised for the excellent performance of Guillermo Francella as Antonio, and the boldness of its screenplay.
BEN IS BACK (U.S., 2018) Director: Peter Hedges In English
GEMS Synopsis: The most wonderful time of the year is also the most stressful in Ben is Back, Peter Hedges' gripping look at the lengths a mother will go to save her son from himself. When Ben (Lucas Hedges) leaves rehab early to be home for Christmas, his mother Holly (Julia Roberts) is both elated and on edge. She tells him that he can stay for one full day, on the condition that she must have eyes on him at all times. Even though he's been clean for a few months, his family still fears the worst – a fear that turns out to be well-founded. Led by a devastating career-best performance from Roberts, Ben is Back deals with the opioid epidemic with fast-paced urgency and compassion. Writer-director Peter Hedges cast his real-life son and Oscar-nominee Lucas Hedges in the title role, a decision that works wonders here. Because when it comes down to it, this is a film about family: the way we hurt each other, the way we love each other, and the way we pick each other up when we're down.
BIRDS OF PASSAGE (Colombia, Denmark, France, Mexico, 2018) Directors: Cristina Gallego, Ciro Guerra In English, Spanish, Wayuu, with English subtitles
GEMS Synopsis: Birds of Passage charts the origins of the Colombian drug trade, through the epic story of an indigenous Wayuu family that becomes involved in the booming business of selling marijuana to American youths during the 1970s. When greed, passion and honor collide, a fratricidal war breaks out that will put their lives, their culture and their ancestral traditions at stake.
BORDER (Denmark, Sweden, 2018) Director: Ali Abbasi In Swedish, with English subtitles
GEMS Synopsis: When Tina, a highly-skilled customs officer with a keen ability to identify smugglers through her senses, crosses paths with Vor, she is surprised to realize that she is unable to properly assess his intentions. This moment of confusion paves the path for Tina's brash journey into self-discovery as she gradually becomes more intrigued by Val's enigmatic presence. Winner of the Uncertain Regard Program at this year's Cannes Film Festival, Ali Abbasi's bold and cleverly-crafted film beautifully overlaps genres to create a relatable and moving tale.
BOYS CRY (Italy, 2018) Directors: Damiano D'Innocenzo, Fabio D'Innocenzo In Italian, with English subtitles
GEMS Synopsis: Two best friends on the brink of adulthood have their worlds turned upside down after a car accident claims the life of a pedestrian. Driven by their visions of a brighter future, Mirko and Manolo surge onward as they become entangled in the volatile and elusive underworld of Rome's most notorious criminals. Under the direction of their new bosses, both men are introduced to an array of enticing yet potentially catastrophic circumstances. The compelling performances by both Carpenzano and Olivetti, along with the D'Innocenzo's Brother's meticulous vision, bring to life this remarkable tale about survival at all costs.
BURNING (Republic of Korea, 2018) Director: Lee Chang-dong In Korean, with English subtitles
GEMS Synopsis: A chance encounter morphs into a mystery in Lee Chang-dong's Burning, a slow-burn examination of anger and obsession where everything is questioned, and little is answered. When Jongsu reconnects with childhood friend Haemi, it seems like things are finally looking up for him. But just as quickly as she enters his life, she leaves for a vacation to Africa. When she returns, she's accompanied by a mysterious man named Ben, who's confident, charismatic and wealthy – everything the hapless Jongsu isn't. Then, things take a turn for the strange when Ben confesses a dark secret hobby, one that Jongsu can't ignore. With Burning, Korean auteur Lee Chang-dong has crafted a mesmerizing narrative about what happens when class conflict and toxic masculinity fuse together. A cinematic puzzle that film aficionados have been utterly transfixed by, Burning became the highest rated film ever on Screen International's Cannes critics grid, marking it as one of the most enthusiastically loved films of the 2018 Cannes Film Festival.
CAPERNAUM (Lebanon, 2018) Director: Nadine Labaki In Lebanese, with English subtitles
GEMS Synopsis: Deeply resentful of his poor upbringing and his parent's monetarily-influenced decision to support the arranged marriage of his younger sister, Zain, a precocious 12-year-old who is currently serving time in a Lebanon prison, decides to sue his parents on the basis of having been born. Nadine Labaki's politically-fueled drama has a unique storyline that brings attention to the issues of children in Beirut's slums. Capernaum was presented with the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival along with a 15-minute standing ovation.
CHAMPIONS (Spain, 2018) Director: Javier Fesser In Spanish, with English subtitles
GEMS Synopsis: Marco is an arrogant and ill-mannered basketball coach. After an altercation at work that gets him detained, he is sentenced to community service, forced to work with a team of differently-abled players who generally operate under the eye of kindly old-timer, Julio. This funny and smart comedy confronts head-on issues of prejudice with a fresh tone.
COLD WAR (France, Poland, UK, 2018) Director: Pawel Pawlikowski In French, Polish, with English subtitles
GEMS Synopsis: Winner of the Best Director award at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, Pawel Pawlikowski is back with Cold War, a decade-spanning romance that finds a star-crossed couple separating and reuniting throughout the years. The film starts in 1949 Poland, where we meet Wiktor as he's scouting the Polish countryside to put together a folk ensemble. There, he meets the fiery Zula, and is instantly drawn in by her star potential. The two start an impassioned affair, but a variety of factors – not least of which are the turbulent time period and their ill-suited pairing – will both keep them apart and drive them head-on towards each other. Replete with sumptuous black and white cinematography and a wonderful soundtrack that flips between Polish folk music to jazz to rock 'n' roll, Cold War is a breathtaking feast for the senses and a punch to the gut for the soul.
EL ANGEL (Argentina, Spain, 2018) Director: Luis Ortega In Spanish, with English subtitles
GEMS Synopsis: Based on the true story of one of Argentina's most infamous criminals, El Angel highlights the origins of Carlos Robledo Puch, the teenage baby-faced serial killer whose murder spree dominated national headlines in Argentina during the early 1970's. What begins as a series of milder crimes for Carlos quickly escalates into a series of ruthless killings. Guided by his blonde curls and angelic demeanor, he manages to lure his victims one by one. Ortega's biopic is a visual feast that manages to blend Puch's pathology and the spirit of his times, in a style that follows the director's fascination with outlaws and the underground. The film saw its world premiere at this year's Uncertain Regard Program at the Cannes Film Festival.
EVERYBODY KNOWS (France, Italy, Spain, 2018) Director: Asghar Farhadi In Spanish, with English subtitles
GEMS Synopsis: Upon traveling back to her hometown near Madrid, Laura, a Spanish woman living in Buenos Aires, seems pleased to be reuniting with old friends and family members as they prepare for a wedding. However, the joyful ambiance quickly dissipates following the unexpected chain of events which includes the sudden disappearance of Laura's daughter and the unveiling of some dark secrets. Directed by two-time Academy Award winner Asghar Farhadi, Everybody Knows marks his first time directing in Spain and working with real-life couple and giants of Spanish and international Cinema, Penélope Cruz and Javier Bardem, as well as the incredible Ricardo Darín. Selected as the opening film of the Cannes Film Festival, this psychological thriller lives up to its suggestive title as a result of Farhadi's masterful direction and an all-star cast who deliver superb performances.
HOPELESSLY DEVOUT (Spain, 2018) Director: Marta Díaz de Lope Díaz In Spanish, with English subtitles
GEMS Synopsis: When Ignacio manages to secure a highly-respectable position at the local religious guild, Carmen, a devout Catholic woman who was confidently pursuing the same title, refuses to concede gracefully. Her scheme to overthrow him, however, ultimately leads to a chain of hysterical and comically inconvenient events that often include an eccentric mix of characters. Marta Diaz De Lope Diaz's first feature film playfully challenges conventional norms in this screwball comedy where chaos ensues in every corner. Well-received at the Malaga Spanish Film Festival, Hopelessly Devout was presented with both an Audience Award and a Best Supporting Actress Award for Carmen Flores' portrayal of Juana.
SOUFRA (U.S., 2017) Director: Thomas Morgan In Arabic, English, with English subtitles
GEMS Synopsis: Soufra follows the unlikely and wildly inspirational story of an intrepid social entrepreneur, Mariam Shaar – a generational refugee who has spent her entire life in the Burj El Barajneh refugee camp just south of Beirut, Lebanon. The film follows Mariam as she sets out against all odds to change her fate by launching a successful catering company, "Soufra," and then expand it into a food truck business with a diverse team of fellow refugee women who now share this camp as their home. Together, they heal the wounds of war through the unifying power of food. In the process, Mariam is breaking barriers, pulling together Syrian, Iraqi, Palestinian and Lebanese women to work side by side and form beautiful friendships while running this thriving business. Soufra will shine a new and revealing light on people inside of the largest refugee crisis in human history, but ultimately this film is about hope, grit, passion and the common bonds created by bringing people together around food as a bridge to overcome all barriers.
WOMAN AT WAR (France, Iceland, Ukraine, 2018) Director: Benedikt Erlingsson In Icelandic, with English subtitles
GEMS Synopsis: To most of her acquaintances, Halla seems like an ordinary and amiable woman who works as a choir director. However, during her spare time, Halla's strong affinity for environmental causes lead her to direct havoc towards targets who aren't exactly eco-friendly. In the midst of her rebellion, Halla finds herself reevaluating her current circumstances after the unexpected arrival of a Ukraine orphan. Through its uniquely-orchestrated score, political undertones, and Erlingsson's knack for infusing high-stake situations with satire, Woman At War is a witty and socially-conscious film that transcends genres.

Deadly Beirut explosions hit Hezbollah stronghold
Source: http://thetypewriter.org/2015/11/deadly-beirut-explosions-hit-hezbollah-stronghold/?utm_source=Tumblr&utm_medium=Tumblr_feed&utm_campaign=autopost
Some three hours ago two explosions took place in the Lebanese capital of Beirut during rush hour. The blasts went off in the southern suburb of Burj el-Barajneh.
Officials have confirmed that at least 41 people have been killed and some 200 people injured from the two explosions. A source to The Typewriter noted that one of those killed was a Hezbollah official.
The suburb Burj el-Barajneh is located off of the main highway which leads to Beirut’s airport. The area itself is a stronghold of the Shia Hezbollah movement. The area is also near to a Palestinian refugee camp, which has taken in a lot of Syrian refugees since the conflict in Syria began.
The blasts were caused by two suicide bombers. The Lebanese Interior Minster confirmed that the attackers commenced the attack on foot and were wearing explosive vests. Local media has reported that a third body of a suicide bomber was found whose explosives had not detonated.
There has been extensive damage to the buildings surrounding the sites of both blasts and some shops had bodies inside them due to the magnitude of the blast.
Security and sectarian tensions in Lebanon have grown with the conflict in neighbouring Syria. Much like today, southern Beirut has previously been targeted by Sunni armed groups.
Lebanon and Beirut has experienced a relatively calm period some claim, the scale of these attacks will only reaffirm fears of Lebanon falling victim to the Syrian quagmire.
