Kitchen Witch Inspo
Hello there!
Life can be, understandably, chaotic and wild at times. So I am here to share some of resources that I used for some meals! Witchy or not, I hope that some of you can find use from this list!
Tumblr media
Online
Thaqueenofsauce - on Tiktok and Instagram! Her page is filled with Stardew Valley inspired meals, often filled with seasonal fruits and veggies.
Lizzieandthebats - onĀ  Instagram! While she does some general kitchen witchery, she also has many magical cocktail recipes to try.
Blackforger - on Instagram! Her energy is a delight, and she gives a lot of good information on forging. She also makes recipes with the items she forges!
ElvenFood - a Reddit filled with vegetarian and vegan recipes designed to look magical.
BudgetBites - A website that gives recipes that can be made on a budget
SortedFood - Part entertaining banter, and part helpful. A youtube channel dedicated to to bridge the gap between ā€œnormalsā€ and chefs, while also showing unique ways to use the food that is already in the back of your pantry!Ā
emmymade - Fun, chaotic, but also calm energy when it comes to this youtube channel. Emmy tries out a range of different foods and recipes, some better than others, and shows her process making them (This channel has a special place in my heart as well).
TastingHistory - An educational channel that talks about different recipes that were eaten throughout history. He jumps from multiple time periods, some of the recipes he recreates go as far back as Mesopotamia with other being as recent as WWII.
Cookbooks
Remember to look at your local libraryā€™s collection first! If they donā€™t have it and youā€™re willing to wait, they can order the book for your!
Small batch snacking cakes by Aimee Broussard - Exactly as it sounds like! Many recipes that make quick and yummy cakes.
Delish Kids by Joanna Saltz - Has a lot of recipes designed for kids, but it is very useful to add nutrition in different ways.
The Good Neighbor Cookbook by Sara Quessenberry and Suzanne Schlosberg - Not only a good book with quick and large amount of recipes, but it is also divided into life events! So if you want to bring a bit of hearth into a person's home then this book is great!
Cook As You Are by Ruby Tandoh - Not only does the art have a lot of diversity, this books is very friendly to each individual. Variations and substitutions are PART of the book, as well as include people with disabilities. It also includes a "note about eating" providing a safe space with those with eating disorders. This cookbook also suggests other cookbooks if you're interested in similar recipes.
Time to Eat: Delicious Meals for Busy Lives by Nadyia Hussain - Honestly a great resource to look through! There are a variety of recipes all intended to be made with the fact that life is just busy. I reccomend the pancake recipe!
As I look for new recipes during the year, I will update this post! Hope you find use from my recommendations!

Grocery Haul Jan 2018
For the first haul of 2018 I drove all over Detroit for the best deals, enjoying my Saturday afternoon of grocery shopping and stocking up my pantry for what is already proving to be a v. v. cold winter. I shopped at Honeybee La Colmena, 168 Asian Mart, and @meijer.
Honeybee La Colmena: this awesome store in Southwest is a great destination for Mexican pantry staples, and they stock my favorite tortillas in all of Detroit - La Michoacana (theyā€™re made right down the street in Southwest!).Ā
At Honeybee I purchased: some of those delicious tortillas; produce (spring onions, radishes, bell peppers, a bulb of garlic, a few Serrano peppers, and red beets); our favorite local Calder Dairy milk; and bulk beans. Beans, such an affordable protein, and so much cheaper when you buy in bulk at a store like Honeybee than buying at at conventional market.
Tumblr media
Those 5 pounds of beans will last us a while.
Next, I journeyed out to 168 Asian Mart, the largest asian market in Michigan! (according to their website). This place is amazing, seriously, if you havenā€™t spent a few hours of your life wandering the aisles of a non-traditional market like this one, run, donā€™t walk, out to 14 mile to see and snack for yourself. Iā€™d been meaning to get out there for a few months because The Doctor has been missing good udon noodles and a selection of legit gochujang for one of our favorite quick dinners, saucy gochujang noodles with fried eggs. So this was a stock-up haul for us (thatā€™s why I was okay going over budget this week).
Chief among the things I loved about 168 Asian Mart was their amazing boba tea bar, ideally positioned right as you walk in. I got the BOSS earl gray (earl gray tea with sugar and milk, grass jelly, and boba (if you like the pearls)(you should like the pearls) to drink while I shopped.
At 168 I purchased: 5 packets of those udon noodles (they keep for months in the fridge), tofu, a few kinds of tteok-bokkiļæ½ļæ½(these freeze and keep well also), 15# of new crop rice, good soy sauce, fish sauce, gochujang, some good mushrooms, and bulk spinach and medium sized kabocha squash.Ā
Those last two items are a great example of why shopping at different markets makes sense for your wallet. For bulk spinach, I saved over half the shelf price for more poundage on this staple that we buy weekly, and the kabocha was at least a 1/4 of the cost of buying a similarly sized winter squash at an American store.
Tumblr media
Last but not least, I visited my favorite conventional market, @meijer. You guys are going to hear a LOT about how much I love Meijerā€™s thrifty acres. You can buy anything there, from Cuties to Tshirts to guns - I literally wander these aisles for relaxation. Unfortunately, we donā€™t have a Meijer in metro Detroit, so I usually shop at the one at 8 mile, but since I was out in Madison Heights I went to that location. Pretty good selection, minimal out of stocks and great service (as always, love Meijer for that).Ā
At Meijer I purchased a few of our preferred brand staples, like Seventh Generation TP and Briannaā€™s poppyseed dressing, since they were on great sale - Iā€™ll often buy more than one of our favorite items when they are discounted, since that saves us money in the long run. I use Meijerā€™s mPerks for tracking the circular and for coupon clipping, like the King Arthur AP flour I bought ($0.50 off coupon through mPerks). I rounded out the basket with ingredients for this weekā€™s meal plan, including a long loaf of bread and pepper jack for grilled cheese later this week, fresh herbs, frozen veggies, jarred pimentos, lotsa eggs, and a whole chicken.
One of my tried and true #GrocerGirlTricks when Iā€™m shopping items for which Iā€™m not brand loyal (which is most things) is to compare the package styles between private label and national brand. Often, if the packaging style is the same, the private label is manufactured by the national brand - so you can get almost the exact same product for a much lower price. See the comparison examples below of frozen peas - both organic and conventional.
Tumblr media
That concludes my shopping adventures for this week. Check out my Instagram account (grocer_girl_detroit) for some snaps while I was in store and exciting things I found on shelf, and more information later this week on #mealplan and what Iā€™m cooking and baking at home for The Doctor.
Happy shopping!
xoxo Grocer Girl

Eating healthy on a budget
So here goes: Food is expensive.Ā  We often reblog beautiful posts of great smoothie bowls and fantastic salads but the reality is that some things are just so damn expensive and seriously, who has the time? Ā  I work full time (shift work) and Iā€™m a busy mum.Ā  I love food, and I love food photography, but I donā€™t have the time to make smoothie bowls every day.Ā  If you want to make me one, please do! :)
This evening I decided to clean out my fridge and use up the last little bits of veg and protein I had.Ā  Some items are about to expire so of course it would be terrible if they went to waste. Now I have some quick go-to meals while I try to complete my week.
Meal planning is key!Ā  Now I donā€™t have any excuses for not eating healthy the next couple of days.
Tumblr media
I used some great items that I had already purchased on sale and turned them into this:
Tumblr media
Egg salad: leftover boiled eggs, yoghurt, and some extra (real) mayo
Tuna salad: a tin of tuna, yoghurt, and mayo
Strawberry bowl: leftover yoghurt, a few sliced strawberries, and chia seeds
Stuffed peppers: Flavoured cream cheese with minced broccoli topped with bacon (can be eaten raw or bake/broil them!)
Salad: Two medium (work-size) salads with ground pork, boiled eggs, and plenty of veg
ā€œPasta-freeā€ pasta salad: broccoli, red peppers, green beans, ground pork, and homemade tomato sauce (I often make big batches and freeze it for later).Ā  This actually made 3 medium-size portions.
More photos under the cut :)
On a whole I usually keep certain staples on hand to save on time and bump up my nutrition.Ā  Salad, yoghurt, broccoli, peppers, garlic, eggs, tinned tomatoes, and onions are staples - use them in salads, soups, stews, stir frys, or even baked parcels with fish and other protein.Ā  Having your favourite herbs and spices will also make things much more interesting.Ā  I use seasalt for my cooking.Ā  Find some spices that you enjoy and use them when youā€™d like.Ā  I like dried chili, cumin, and smoked paprika because it adds depth.Ā  Dried oregano and thyme with a squeeze of lemon juice would really add some fresh and sharp flavours.

Good Morning!! It's New Years Eve and we're roasting our own coffee beans this morning before "fasted" cardio. WHAT IS FASTED CARDIO? Fasted cardio is simply, cardio performed after a fast. Usually first thing in the morning after 10 hours of šŸš«eating. IS IT RIGHT FOR MY BODY TYPE? The better question here might be if fasted cardio is right for my fitness goals? If you are trying to burn fat and don't struggle with gaining muscle then yes fasted cardio could be an option. WHY WORKOUT FASTED? Because your body is in a fasted state it will release stored body fat as fuel; since most of your glucose (product of sugar/carbs) has been depleted. WHY CAFFEINE? If you supplement with caffeine before performing moderate intensity fasted cardio, your body will boost the levels of catecholamines which then stimulates fat burning enzymes to make fatty acids more available to be burned off. RESULTS: Paired with the right nutrition your body will begin to release stubborn body fat which is usually located in the hips, thighs and lower body for women and abdomen and lower back for men. COFFEE ORDER: Black OR with unsweetened milk choice and stevia. The key is to keep calories and sugar minimal or it will take more time to tap into those stubborn fat stores. #BTR #mealprep #healthyeating #bodybuildinggirls #iifym #iifymgirls #protein #healthyrecipes #loseweį»‹ght #burnfat #hormonebalance #foodie #foodiereview #budgetbites #Aldi #coffee #girlswholift #supplement #FastedCardio #Endomorph #mesomorph #ectomorph #fitness #newyearsresolution #NewYear2017
