Hugo Madrigal

Hugo’s full name is Hugo Diego Madrigal.

His first name means “mind”, and his middle name means “teaching”. 

He is the first adopted child of Camilo Madrigal and Marcos Vasquez.

He has slightly curly black hair, brown skin, and brown eyes. He has a tiny mustache that he worked very hard for, and will never shave.

He is fourteen years old.

He has two younger biological brothers, José, younger by five years, and Héctor, younger by eight.

He likes girls, but is single.

His gift is the ability to manipulate insects. He acts as the queen bee or ant of any insect he sees, and is able to control them that way. He personally loves his gift, and the Encanto has no problems with it either…it’s him they dislike.

His door portrays him smiling, with his arms stretched out on either side of him in a t-pose. Various flying insects swarm around him.

His room looks like an entomologist’s dreamhouse. The floors and walls are wood, and the walls are covered in informational posters about insects and bugs, as well as dead (of natural causes) ones pinned up in glass cases. His bed has bug-patterned sheets. He has potted plants everywhere, and on every available flat surface are his pet bugs in terrariums. Pepito’s perch sits by his bed.

His symbol is a horned beetle, mid flight.

Hugo is very quiet, and Camilo is very loud. They don’t always see eye to eye, but Camilo never makes Hugo feel lesser for his oddities.

Marcos and Hugo are both quiet, and they seem to understand each other more than Camilo. As Marcos was an orphan too, he can also connect to him through that experience.

His birth parents were very neglectful of him and his brothers before they died when he was eight. Hugo was essentially the only parent José and Héctor had, and he rarely ever saw their actual parents. Hugo doesn’t hold them in very high regard.

José, like Camilo, is loud and eccentric, compared to Hugo’s calm quiet. They get along better though, because they lived with their birth parents for the longest, and Hugo basically had to raise José.

Héctor was much too young to remember their parents, but Hugo still acts like a surrogate parent to him. They both are more quiet, and so get along better. Pepito the toucan also loves Héctor.

He ends up hanging out with the other “outcast” cousins: Sofía, Fuega, Andrés, Zoe, and Óscar, not because of his gift, but because of ableism.

He gets along best with Bruno, Dolores, and Zoe.

He is autistic and selectively mute. This is the reason why so many townspeople shun him.

His Tio Antonio gave him a service animal, in the form of Pepito the toucan. Pepito helps him stim, and negates his anxiety.

His favorite bugs are butterflies, beetles, bees, and ants.

Despite the fact that he barely talks, he gives the best advice, and is very wise for his age.

He doesn’t like large crowds, and prefers to stick with his cousins when they go into town.

His favorite colors are yellow, red, pink, and orange.

Week One: Introduction!

OMG how have I never done a proper introduction of my girl??? Anyways…

Full name: Angela Leilani Yaamil Morales Estrada

Age at the time of the movie: 48 years old (December 8th, 1901)

Angel was initially a name holder for the reader insert in my fic, “Why did it have to be me?” She was never intended to become a full fledged OC, but thanks to several supportive friends, Angela evolved into what she is now.

Angela is born to parents Guillermo and Anamaria in 1901, and shortly after childbirth, Anamaria sadly passes away, leaving Angela to be raised primarily by Anamaria’s parents, Quinuama and Raymundo. She is the youngest of six cousins on her maternal side, and she knows very little about her father’s extended family. The passing of Anamaria puts Guillermo in an inconsolable depression, leaving his daughter to be brought up by her grandparents due to his emotional absence. Her family owns and runs a tailoring shop in the Encanto, renowned for their fine fiber arts and beautifully crafted clothes. Angela is best known for her impressive bead work and crocheting, as she enjoys fixating on tiny details.

At age five, she befriends the Madrigal triplets, the four of them becoming close companions, but especially between Angela and Bruno. The two of them grow close over the years, considering the other to be their best friend. I’ll save the juicy details of their companionship for Week two, but to summarize, their friendship takes a dramatic twist following the breakup of Angela and her fiancé when she is 19.

Following in her mother’s footsteps, she joins the church choir at a young age, and quickly blossoms into a vocal star, devoting her time to organizing musical events and writing songs. Later in life, she takes to traveling outside of the Encanto, something inside her yearning to know more about the world and escape the limitations she feels trapped in. She gains herself a notable reputation as a performer in multiple social clubs and lounges, her name taking her across South America, and eventually across the sea.

Angela’s personality and mannerisms are based a lot on my own. She is extremely caring and compassionate for others, but often has a hard time deciphering her own emotions, and will usually bottle up her complicated feelings to save herself from causing trouble. She is often lovingly criticized as being overly dramatic by her family and friends, causing her to become extremely cautious and anxious about how she presents herself to others. Sometimes, something small will set off her temper, and she gets very cold and unresponsive as a defense mechanism, or if something makes her deeply upset after a buildup of repressed feelings and stress, she will fall apart into tears. Often times, her stimming gets interpreted as flirtatious behavior, and her attempts at masking usually have the same effect (hair twirling, too much eye contact, smiling and nodding).

A few little bits of information and trivia:

The bracelet she is almost always seen wearing was gifted to her on her fifth birthday. It had originally belonged to her mother. It is made up of pearls, jade, and a thin gold chain. Her rosary is constructed of similar materials.

Leilani was her intended name in canon, as Guillermo wanted to name her after his mother, but Anamaria immediately called her baby ‘her angel’ when she was born, so the name Angela was chosen instead and Leilani was bestowed as her second name.

I imagine her voice sounding like that of Angela Aguilar when she’s younger, and evolving into a vocal powerhouse like Beyoncé or Selena.

She is terrible at cooking. Her grandmother and aunts had tried to ingrain the kitchen skills into her at a young age, but it stressed her out because she wasn’t naturally gifted in it. She can make a good cup of coffee, but it’s best to leave to crafting of fine foods in the hands of someone more capable and confident.

How do the ND Madrigals stim?

If they do in the first place ofc.

The Madrigals with Autism and/or ADHD all stim, yes.

Pepa fiddles with her hair, either brushing or braiding of whatever else. The “clear skies” mantra also counts as a stim.

Bruno has quite a lot of stims: knocking; tapping; clicking his fingers; flapping his hands, arms or legs; finger flicking. He also has a few verbal stims, which is mainly whistling or repeating things to himself - this can irritate Dolores.

Isabela cracks her fingers and other bones or grinding her teeth. Her fingers and hands are the main ones, as she learnt she could hide that better than cracking her back or something whilst being Señorita Perfecta.

Dolores drums her fingers against the opposite hand. Fiddling with her hands as well. Sometimes mimicking playing an instrument. She is usually quite quiet and subtle when stimming, the others don’t always notice when she is.

Luisa likes touching specific textures. In particular, anything soft: the donkeys fur; a blanket; a stuffed toy; hugging Mirabel; the sewing project Mira is currently working on; etc. Anything that is nearby.

Camilo jumps or bounces a lot while stimming, but he also makes a lot of vocal noises - which, again, irritates Dolores.

Antonio rocks back and forth, either while standing or sitting. He also quite likes petting soft things, similar to Luisa, always has a couple of animal friends nearby to help him.

Headcanon: Dolores, Mirabel, and Bruno Madrigal from Disney’s Encanto are autistic! Mirabel stims by dancing and playing with her skirt, Dolores stim with vocal noise and singing/rapping, and Bruno stim by petting his rats! All three love soft and cute texture and all three enjoyed each other’s company!

In defense of headcanoning Dolores Madrigal as autistic (because some of you people have the FLIMSIEST reasons for why she is not)

1. Familiarity in stimming

Autistic folks tend to use things that are already accepted by those around us as stims. A band or choir kid might trill their lips, for example. This also applies to cultural things (eg; the little "hm"). Just because something is a cultural behavior does not mean it can't be used as a stim. (Something similar applies to the Bruno OCD thing, but that's a different post)

2. Tone and speech

Dolores is blunt and speaks with a quiet monotone. When she wants to say something, she gets right to the point. It's there the whole movie. Just one example: telling the kids about Mira's lack of a gift? It was common knowledge (meaning the kids would find out anyway) and Mira didn't want to tell them despite them pestering her about it. A common reaction for autistic folks to have to situations like that is "I'll tell them so you don't have to."

Autistic people often convey either more or less emotion than we mean to, and it's not uncommon to overcorrect. If you didn't see this in Dolores... did you even watch the movie?

3. Noise

If you pay attention to the details, it becomes clear that Dolores' gift is the ability to CONTROL her hearing, not simply hear everything. When abuela tells her to, she actively directs her senses to a specific location. If she heard every little thing within such a large distance all the time, she would be unable to function. The whole Madrigal family has gifts that either fit who they are as a person or have the ability to help them.

Despite this, her ears are obviously still sensitive. She covers her ears in the crowd, when Casita is cracking, etc. Autistic people can often hear everything around us (we do not hear things super loud, we are unable to block out even sounds neurotypicals don't notice) and as such conditions like misophonia are often comorbid.

When a group of people can all look at a character and go "Oh, you're one of us!" it's probably best to... I don't know, listen to them? And not try to take away a character's relatability using arguements that don't work at all?

Can I just say that this is one of my favorite subtle moments? Notice how Pepa instinctively, without looking, pulls Bruno’s wrist to gently detach his hand from holding/rubbing at his left arm - that anxious habit/protective gesture/stim we see him do multiple times throughout the film, and in even in his Gift Photo.

Whether this is to make him aware of it (like ‘hey you’re grinding your teeth again hon’), or to silently let him know she can tell he’s anxious and that he doesn’t have to be nervous or ashamed, or some mix of both, I think this is something she and Julieta did often as they grew up - a silent show of support and comfort.

Notice also how much physical touch he’s receiving in this last ten minutes, particularly from Julieta. (She out of everyone most obviously has Physical Touch as a love language, look at how she interacts with Mirabel throughout the film too) Lots of hugs, gentle proximity, compression and assurance and overflowing affection. These three have known each other since conception, they know each other’s tells and triggers intimately, they know how to soothe them, and even with a ten year absence those sisterly instincts came back immediately. And I think that’s beautiful.
