HAYRIDE TO HELL Starts Production Outside Philadelphia, PA
Hayride To Hell, a new horror film from producer/director Dan Lantz, has started production in exurban and rural Southeastern Pennsylvania.
An original, darkly comic, gruesome revenge story written by Bob Lange and Kristina Chadwick, the film stars horror stalwarts Kane Hodder as Sheriff Jubell (FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII: NEW BLOOD) and Bill Moseley as Farmer Sam (TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2; Carnivàle). Director of Photography Tom MaCoy, producers Dan Lantz, Rob Margolies (SHE WANTS ME, ALL YOU CAN EAT) and Gretel Snyder (Star Trek: Renegades; who also serves as Assistant Director), and Executive Producers Bob Lange and Kristina Chadwick round out the production team.
Kane Hodder (Sheriff Jubell in Hayride to Hell)
In the film, a farmer (Moseley) takes his revenge in grand fashion on the unscrupulous town folk who try to steal his farm. Other cast members include Graham Wolfe (The Punisher, Mr. Robot, For Life) as Nixler, Amy Rutledge (RENT-A-PAL, NEIGHBOR, EYES OF THE DEAD) as Patty, and Brooke Stacy Mills (LAW ABIDING CITIZEN). HAYRIDE TO HELL will shoot on location in the exurban farmland west of Philadelphia, PA between now and the end of the month.
Bill Moseley (Farmer Sam in Hayride to Hell)
Following his breakout role as “Chop Top" in THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2, William Lambert (Bill) Moseley has starred in numerous horror cult classics, including HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES, REPO! THE GENETIC OPERA and THE DEVIL'S REJECTS, and he’s well-known as the cook in HBO’s Carnivàle. For his part, Kane Hodder has played horror legend Jason Voorhees in FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VII: THE NEW BLOOD, FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VIII: JASON TAKES MANHATTAN, JASON GOES TO HELL: THE FINAL FRIDAY, and JASON X, as well as the first three films in the HATCHET series (HATCHET, HATCHET II, and HATCHET III).
Director/Producer Dan Lantz
Dan Lantz spent the first twenty years of his career making TV commercials and reality TV shows before he transitioned into narrative short films, beginning with FELIX MELMAN. That film won several awards and led to Lantz writing and directing more shorts and a web series. In 2011, Lantz directed two low-budget feature-length horror films that got the attention of a few industry contacts. This led to him directing his fourth feature film BLOODRUNNERS, a Prohibition-era vampire thriller starring Ice-T with a worldwide release in 2017.
Most recently, Lantz achieved his dream of creating a film twenty-years in the making to life: ALPHA RIFT. A modern-day medieval sword and sorcery epic story of an average guy fated to hold a secret demon at bay, ALPHA RIFT releases November 19 from Vertical Entertainment. In ALPHA RIFT, Nolan Parthmore (Aaron Dalla Villa, PLEDGE, Gotham, Duels) is running his game store and flirting with his co-worker Gabby (Rachel Nielsen, GREEN PIECE, Mare of Easttown) when destiny comes calling. Nolan discovers he is an heir to the medieval bloodline “The Noblemen” when he dons an antique helmet and calls forth a demon recently released from his supernatural prison: Lord Dragsmere (Philip N. Williams, The Wire, The Blacklist, Broad City). He must quickly learn to harness his power and open the Alpha Rift: the only defense against these supernatural foes. Leading the Noblemen are Richard Corbin (Lance Henriksen, ALIENS, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND, Millennium) and his lieutenant Vicars (Graham Wolfe) who must guide Nolan as he is forced to become the hero he never wanted to be.
Lantz, who recently won two awards as “Best Director of an Action Film” and “Best Director of a Fantasy,” from the bi-monthly Best Actor and Director Awards-New York, feels lucky to be making his second film in the Keystone State. “First, Pennsylvania may not have cornered the market on creepy, but it sure has a strong minority stake. The locations are dark and brooding—Wyeth country. Second, Pennsylvania does have a tax incentive program and that money is certainly helping a modestly budgeted production punch above its weight. The program is under constant threat to be axed by the state, so I do not know what the future holds. I do hope they keep it as it keeps proud Pennsylvania filmmakers like me from heading to other states.
“It’s an unusual spot to be in, making one film while releasing another,” Lantz concludes. “A lucky spot to be sure. It’s sometimes hard to keep things straight. But it’s a great spot to be in as a parent: I have one child going out into the world and another in gestation.”

DRUNKEN SAILOR // ARCHIVE LINK
Despite the encroaching night, the docks were still bustling. Burly workers milled about, sailors and merchants alike going about the last of their business for the day, the latter hawking wares and seeking to crack open the coin purse of any passerby they could convince.
This far north, the leaves on the trees grew a medley of color ranging from rich indigo to bright cobalt blue, now dusted with a sugary coating of peach and amber sunset lighting. Speckled between the deep blues were flames of orange, brightly burning street lamps that marked the way up the cobblestone steps from the docks into town. Thick clouds hung over the shore, tinged the same colors as the sunset, save one heavy grey cloud that threatened rain. A watercolor painting, all reflected in the mirror of the sea.
On a cliff overlooking the scene was the local inn and tavern. Oil lanterns and tattered banners swayed in the wind, beckoning travelers and locals alike inside, out of the biting cold. On an icy northern night like this, few could resist the comforts of a warm hearth, strong drinks, and good company.
[ MUSIC // AMBIANCE // ARCHIVE LINK ]
Unsurprisingly. The tavern itself was seething with activity. After all, any who were willing to keep the peace were welcome here. Many even hung their weapon belts at the door - trusting the town guard to see to their safety. Red cherry wood was stained purple, drenched in the shade of the cool evening. The building was old - a big, open space with two floors and several hearths, built of stout timber and set upon a sturdy stone foundation. Rugs covered the stone floor, thick curtains kept the draft out, and soft furs were draped over furniture.
In the center of the main hall, down from the ceiling grew one of the local trees, a great spectacle of vibrant blue foliage and inky black branches - limbs that stretched down and had been tied and trained to hold the many, many lanterns flickering brilliant gold and crimson through old, smoke-stained glass, that together made a chandelier. A blend of different tongues, all overlapping and fighting to be heard over one another, caused a din that made it difficult for the innkeeper and her customer to hear themselves.
“Iyrngybet… what you’ve given me here is not even half of what you owe.”
“Aye… that is the right of it, lass.”
The burly Roegadyn man awkwardly rubbed the back of his head and avoided the eyes of the innkeeper. The woman was smaller than him practically by half, but her no-nonsense air had him shuffling his feet and pouting like a schoolboy being disciplined. She sighed at him with rather evident disappointment, but did not seem angry.
“Well… I have horses that need grooming and stalls that need cleaning.”
The Hyur woman hardly had the time to finish her sentence before the brawny man was wrapping his arms around her and picking her up in a tight bearhug. Luckily for her, the rafters in the ceiling were high, so she did not risk hitting her head despite the way he twirled her around.
“Oh, yer a gem, Maude! A right gem!”
“Yes, yes…” Maude did her best to sound exasperated, but the laughter in her voice was palpable. “Put me down, please.”
“O’course.”
He very gingerly set her down, and the freckled woman brushed her skirt free of the many wrinkles the unexpected hug had put in it.
“I will expect you bright and early tomorrow morning, sixth bell. Do I make myself clear?”
“Perfectly!”
Maude, the innkeeper and tavern’s owner, felt a good deal older than her twenty and six summers. A hyur woman with a sharp wit but a kind heart, she opened the tavern and inn to any who would keep the peace, and who agreed to comply with the local guard who watched her door.
Her dress was a layering of mismatched petticoats, cream linen, and an old, many times mended hempen bodice, laced haphazardly with fraying jute cord. Her auburn brown hair was tied back in a long, loosely plaited braid that reached her hip in total length, wrapped about her temple and tying underneath her long hair was the one fine thing she owned - a vivid blue silk sash.
As the tavern’s sole proprietor and the only staff she could truly afford, Maude had her hands full filling and refilling drinks, fetching dried meat and loaves of bread, and assigning rooms to the sailors and travellers as they came and went.
She didn’t mind, though - she liked to be kept busy, and in her handful of years living here, she had grown to love the town, the tavern, and its people. The majority of her customers were regulars she knew by name, the other sailors she vaguely recognized when they passed through during certain months.
There was, however, one figure present this evening she did not recognize at all. He was mild-mannered, unobtrusive - he spoke to the guard before entering and even agreed to leave his sword belt at the door. And much to her delight he paid his coin without hesitation, excuse, or flimsy attempts at bartering. He was garbed in a dusty matte black coat, layered over a simple leather doublet and creamy, low-cut white shirt. Brass buttons had been worn down over time, seams stretched and quilted lapels scuffed from wear and tear. He had introduced himself as a sailor, and he had the look of one. He had thick brown hair and one piercing, gold eye, the left - the right was covered with a leather patch, a relatively common feature amongst sailors. His skin was tan, the corners of his eyes wrinkled, but only in a way that really showed when he smiled.
There was little unnatural or unusual about the Miqo’te, save perhaps a certain lazy grace with which he moved and carried himself. As the evening carried on, she found herself paying him more attention. There was a brooding expression on his face, an almost alarming focus that furrowed his brow and tightened his jaw, that with a suave charm was instantaneously covered once he felt eyes on him. It took him no time at all to warm up to the locals and join in with the drinking.
He held aloft a full tankard, by nature of his height towering over most of his newfound company. He had a gruff, guttural, but still somehow charming singing voice.
“Hey ho, to the bottle I go! To heal my heart and drown my woe. Rain may fall, and wind may blow, But there’ll still be many malms to go! Sweet is the sound of the pouring rain, And the river that runs from hill to plain. Better than rain or a rippling brook, Is a mug of beer that brings me luck!”
This unfamiliar sailor had enough of a boom behind his voice that it filled the room right up to the brim, but even it threatened to be drowned out by the laughter and chorus of voices that joined in alongside it to sing the familiar diddy. A beat rose up, a mix of boots stomping against the wood and fists slamming into tabletops. Maude was sure she had never seen the tavern so full, or so lively.
Iyrngybet was perhaps the loudest and rowdiest of all those drinking, though despite this he always handled himself well. He was the friendly, rambunctious sort - even without the drink. And much to Maude’s relief, he and this new stranger seemed to get on rather well. They were clapping each other on the back and toasting tankards together between verses. The last note of the stranger’s song faded out to thunderous applause and hollers. The Roegadyn wasted no time then in striking up a new rhythm and bellowing out the words to a new ditty. Another popular song, an age old warning about pirates and thieves, the ones that come for naughty children in the night.
“My mother said he listens My father’s seen him walk Stay in bed, asleep at home Be spared the slaver’s lock.
With whip he’ll bind your ankles Blind your eyes with sash and cord And if you cry out in the night Alone he’ll take you aboard.
The slaver snake, he waits With coiled whip and black clad hand Beware the viper's bite, my son Fear Captain Stacy's brand!”
Iyrngybet drained the last of his tankard amidst many cheers, and resounding boos for the pirate in question that the song had referenced.
“Haven’t heard that one since I was a wee child, eh?” A patron said to her as she refilled their proffered glass.
“Indeed,” She replied. “I fear much to his dismay, dear Iyrngybet ages himself by nature of his song choice.”
Though her feet ached and she longed nothing more than to sit down and enjoy a moment’s quiet, Maude couldn’t help but smile and readied herself to pour another round of drinks. At the very least, this stranger and his charm with the crowd made for good beverage sales.
Still, his charm left her with an odd feeling in the pit of her stomach. She brushed it off as the excitement of having a new face in town, for after all - it was a rather rare occasion.
Down on the docks, five score sailors were disembarking an unmarked sloop, leaving behind the now pitch black sea and heading up the hill towards the wintery blue forest, and the tavern itself. They moved swiftly and silently, light footsteps barely seeming to touch the ground they tread upon. They wore matching colors of black and gold, and not a word was spoken between them. Hand signals were made, and packs began to peel away, moving through the town and into the woods. All the while, that grey cloud still lingering in the midnight sky grew darker and darker. A storm was imminent.
“Hail to you, good ser. If you seek accommodations for the evening, I have beds for rent.”
The Miqo’te leaned gently from one side to another, fighting to keep himself even slightly upright, before simply nodding. Maude bowed her head and made every effort not to smile at his drunkenness, lest the stranger take offense.
“A room is five-hundred gil. Have you the coin to pay?”
Before she’d even fully finished her question, the Miqo’te had set down a small leather satchel of gil on the bar. Maude pulled the coin purse towards her, counting out what was owed to her swiftly and returning the excess, as well as the pouch, to their owner. She tucked the gil away in the safe kept beneath the counter before straightening up and tossing her scarf back over her shoulder.
“Right this way, then…” Maude used a small key she kept on her person to open a wide, flat drawer beneath her bar, within which were nestled many similarly shaped keys. She selected one and extended her arm.
“I will show you to your room.”
The man simply nodded, pushing himself back a pace from the bar before falling in behind her. He wobbled precariously now and then, after a time deigning to reach his right hand out to trace fingertips along the wall in an effort to steady himself. They ascended a flight of steps, walking at a leisurely pace around the upper level of the atrium of the tavern, where the Miqo’te had to transition to leaning against the wooden banister to keep himself upright. Maude walked slowly, leaving her guest ample room to catch up without rushing him, and meanwhile glanced down at the still drinking and dining patrons below. Laughter still bellowed upwards towards the rafters now and again, but a few - like the Miqo’te she now escorted - were content to begin finding their ways to their beds.
Along the balcony of the atrium they walked, to the far side of the brilliant chandelier and blossoming tree branches, and down a hallway that provided some small shelter from the loud volume of the guests, was the available room she’d chosen for him. She unlocked it and pushed the door open, stepping back and meaning to hand off his key to him. But when she turned around, she could only stifle a small chuckle. He had stopped perhaps five fulms behind her, and was now leaning with his elbow against the wall, head nestled into the crook of his arm. She cleared her throat, swallowing her laughter before addressing him.
“Ser...?”
Maude’s voice trailed off as she noticed he seemed to be very quietly humming yet another drunken ditty. His mumblings could hardly be considered lyrics, but she recognized the tune as one of the ones sung earlier in the night.
“My mother said he listens My father’s seen him walk Stay in bed, asleep at home Be spared the slaver’s lock…”
She smiled to herself, thumbing over the key in her hands and simply hoping the man would find himself just enough to make it to the room he’d paid for. His voice replying to her snapped her out of thoughts.
“How old were you the first time you heard that song?”
“Hm? Why, I suppose I was just a girl when I-”
Maude glanced back up towards him, eyeing him curiously. For perhaps the first time the entire night, she stopped and truly looked at this sailor. She noted the cleverness present in his face. The odd, unsettlingly crooked smile hovering at the corners of his mouth, the dangerous alertness visible in the one, glittering eye she was permitted to see. The way his body wasn’t shaking or swaying at all anymore.
He had been deceiving her all night. This man was not drunk at all.
Now that she was up close to him, Maude couldn’t help but squint at the way she could swear his entire presence seemed to flicker. His thick brown hair seemed to catch the lantern light in bright flashes of turquoise blue, the dusty brass buttons of his coat giving way to brilliant gold.
The longer she studied him, the colder Maude felt. But he just smiled at her, slowly straightening up to his full height. Having regained control of her tongue enough to stop staring dumbfounded, she took a respectful step back, once more offering his room’s key to him. It took every ounce of strength and self control not to stutter or give away her discomfort. She didn’t know who she was dealing with, or why he would lie, but it made fear grip her cold. She knew to be careful.
“You make strange conversation, ser. I think bed rest would do you well. If you need anything else, you need only ask.”
“Or perhaps you are like me.” Though she attempted to change the subject, the Miqo'te overrode her. “Placing little stock in such fanciful tales.”
He spoke slowly and softly, but this did little to dissipate the Hyur’s nerves. She realized immediately that this man had her backed into a corner, and out of the line of sight of the other patrons for the moment.
“Pray, rest easy.”
His voice was like a purr. A quiet rumble deep in his chest. It was as if he’d read her mind, or perhaps he had seen her eyes flick momentarily over towards the hallway behind him.
“I do hope you will forgive my belated introduction.”
Something translucent like scales seemed to ripple and fall from his body as the glamour dissipated. Brown hair instead shone a seafoam teal, worn long save for the short buzz on either side of his temples. The dusty, worn-in coat was now shed for a clean, elegant looking black and gold uniform. There was not a single seam or wrinkle out of place. Polished gold at his shoulders emblazoned with a calligraphic “S” denoted his rank. His hands were covered with a pair of oily black gloves, and adorned with gold rings. One such hand went behind his back, the other in front of him, as he gifted the innkeeper a formal bow, still smiling.
“Captain Cyril Stacy, a pleasure to meet you.”
The Hyur caught her breath a moment, eyes tracing over the man now before her, unsure if they could even be called the same person. As was quite common among some Miqo’te, his breeding was written practically in ink along every sharp line of his face, in his imposing silhouette and broad shoulders. And, despite his casual, perhaps almost jovial demeanor and the superficial camaraderie among the tavern folk earlier in the night, his voice had the immistakible, careless authority of someone wholly accustomed to being obeyed.
She knew the name, she knew the song, she knew the stories. She knew exactly who this man claimed to be.
“Are you mad, or brilliant?” She whispered. “Drawing attention to yourself all evening like that, my good Captain…” She spat his title at him with contempt crisp against her teeth, a mixture of mockery and disbelief. “Among my patrons there is no shortage of bounty hunters. Adventurers who would be eager to claim the prize you proclaim yourself to be.”
Cyril merely chuckled quietly and shook his head.
“You think me more reckless than I am, love. Your patrons will hardly remember the evening.”
Confusion was plastered all over the innkeeper’s face until she took a few moments to listen carefully. It was quiet. The laughter, the chatter, it had all died down.
“What have you done?”
Worry boiled over into panic and Maude picked up her skirts, shuffling sheepishly a few steps aside from Cyril. When he made no move to stop her or block her path, she darted back towards the atrium. She grabbed the banister and leaned over worriedly, taking in the disturbingly quiet scene before her.
A lucky few had made it to the comfortable, fur-draped chairs that surrounded the crackling hearth. The others dozed at their tables, slumped over with heads resting atop folded arms or even one another. A few of the most unfortunate simply collapsed, sprawled out over the bearskin rugs or slumped down in a heap against the wall. It was as if they had been put under a spell, none of them so much as twitched or shuffled in their sleep.
Heavy, slow footsteps behind her alerted her of Cyril’s approach, followed closely by his still quiet voice. As he stalked up behind her, he pulled a kerchief from his breast pocket and wiped the sides of his neck clean of the rum he’d splashed on it to make him smell intoxicated.
“Rest assured, they are not harmed.”
These were her patrons, her people - when they came to her establishment they were in her charge. That this man had so easily weaseled his way in and drugged every drinker was a thought both terrifying and humiliating. Anger boiled in her blood, and without thinking she whirled around and pulled her hand back to strike the man in the face. In the middle of her motion she seemed to realize what she was doing was unwise, and in that split second of hesitation, Cyril reached up and grabbed her wrist before she had the chance to slap him. He still spoke softly, even as he threatened nonchalantly to crush her arm in his grip.
“You ought to be thanking me. I may very well have rescued your floundering business from the softness of your heart.”
Maude grimaced and attempted to tug her arm away, to no avail.
“I beg your pardon?”
In one fluid movement, Cyril spun her around - holding her arm behind her as he marched her back over towards the railing. He reached his arm about her and rested his free hand on the banister while he directed her attention to the dozing patrons.
“Look at the sorry lot of them. Drunkards and beggars. Doubtless, some wretched sod lies in a heap behind the building, threatening to drown in his own vomit. Those that can stand up leave the next morning without paying what they owe, to return again the following eve. Such people are worthless if left to their own devices.”
Maude’s bright eyes darted from one sleeping form to another - Iyrngybet, Damien, Eliza, Ihri'a, Bardi, Oshonne… She knew them by name! They were her townspeople, her friends, her family. And to hells with it if they couldn’t always pay in coin! They paid her back in other ways, helping her tend to the establishment. To her, that was more than enough.
“Rapacious man! Does your black heart beat only for coin? A man drowned in the drink is more honorable than you’ll ever be.”
“Oh, my darling. You wound me with such harsh words. I am not an evil man. You should know...”
As he spoke, his hand left the bannister, gloved fingers sliding up to caress and curl about Maude’s bare neck.
“I do this for you.”
Maude snarled and wrestled herself free of the Miqo’te, scrambling a few paces away from him and whipping around to face him. Again, he made no move to hold her in his grasp, nor to stop her from wriggling free. And even as she glared at him with fire in her eyes, she was well aware her efforts to free herself of his hold were only successful because he allowed them to be.
“Wh-what in the world? How dare you insinuate I would do business with your kind!”
“Abandoned by an unfaithful husband.” The pirate began. “A beloved sister, dead so young.” He took a step towards her as he spoke. “Aging and ailing parents, to whom you send every small amount of coin you can spare…”
Maude’s heart was racing. How much did this man know? So beside herself with shock was she, the innkeeper didn’t realize she’d been shuffling away from him until her back hit the wall. He brushed her hair back behind her shoulders, tracing his hand along her cheek to her chin and tilting her face up to look at him.
“And a kind heart. One far too soft for business. But you need not worry any longer. I will look after you.”
He smiled softly at Maude, keeping his one eye on her as he brought his other hand to his ear just long enough to tap the receiver of his linkpearl.
“Move in.”
There was a bright blue flash of light and almost instantaneously a resounding boom as what was surely lightning split the sky above the tavern. The door to the tavern flung back on its hinges, the guard that should have been watching it absent from his post, as uniformed sailors filed into the building. Maude yelped and shrunk back in surprise. Through the glass windows she could vaguely make out the silhouette of a massive airship, shrouded in a thick, unnatural fog that it seemed to use as a cover, teetering precariously close to the cliff.
And at the sixth bell of the next morning, Iyrngybet - like so many others - was nowhere to be found.

Richard Elfman on his new bizarro comedy - Aliens, Clowns & Geeks
By Staci Layne Wilson
When it comes to cult science fiction movies, Forbidden Zone stands tall. Richard Elfman's 1980 Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo vehicle was a one-of-a-kind film zooming down on a one-way street to a whacky conclusion that’s stayed in the minds of schlock cinema fans ever since. His latest film, Aliens, Clowns & Geeks is an equally wild and expressionistic indie featuring Austin Powers' Verne Troyer in his last role, promising that Aliens, Clowns & Geeks is the antidote to mainstream and a breakneck cure for the run-of-the-mill.
“I was fortunate to have my dream cast on this one, including Verne Troyer (Mini-Me) as my demonic clown emperor–his final film role,” says Elfman. “Our ninety-minute film has seventy-five minutes of driving music by my brother Danny (Elfman) and acclaimed animation composer, Ego Plum Guerrero. Along with Danny’s to-die-for clown and alien music, Ego added a Latin element with the band we play with, Mambo Demonico.” The score was composed by Danny Elfman, who wrote the theme song to The Simpsons, the music to The Nightmare Before Christmas and did the singing voice of Jack Skellington, and won six Saturn awards.
"Eddy Pine (Bodhi Elfman) is a jaded actor dealing with the cancellation of his series," reads the official synopsis. "To complicate matters, he wakes up with the key to the universe stuck up his ass. Apparently an alien Clown Emperor (Verne Troyer) is in hot pursuit of this, as are his rivals, the Green Aliens. Professor von Scheisenberg (French Stewart) and his comely Swedish assistants, the Svenson sisters (Rebecca Forsythe as Helga, Angeline-Rose Troy as Inga), come to Eddy’s aid. If only Eddy hadn’t fallen for Helga, and then the aliens manipulate his mind to confuse her with Inga! And when the mad little Clown Captain (Martin Klebba) steps on the gas and shifts his spaceship into fourth gear, all hell breaks loose.”
We had the opportunity to sit down with Richard to ask him about his movie.
Q. To what do you attribute your enduring interest in clowns? And why do you think they’re so fascinating to people in general?
As I’ve always said: “To be born a male redhead is to be born into a clown suit.” Hence my carrot-topped brother Danny and I have always had a fascination with clowns. Coupled with our wicked sense of humor and a love of the horror genre, it was an easy morph into thoughts of creepy clowns. Just like dolls and puppets—yes, I’m speaking Anabelle—clowns can have something “surreal” about them. Bill Skarsgard’s Pennywise really nails it. And I laughed my head off at Killer Klowns From Outer Space. (And we have honk-honking shit-load of killer clowns in my new film).
Q. How did the idea for Aliens, Clowns & Geeks come about? Is it similar to The Forbidden Zone?
Joined-at-the-hip. Yes. And no. Forbidden Zone is basically a surrealistic “human-cartoon” set to musical numbers. So I was working on Forbidden Zone 2, a thematic extension of FZ but on a much grander scale. I did a successful crowd-funder to develop the project, then, with the help of my producers, raised about half the budget. They asked me if we could do something quick (and cheaper) in the interim to keep the momentum going.
So I basically locked myself in my roof-top writing garret with a box of cigars and many bottles of whiskey and banged out my Geeks script over the next three weeks.
Geeks is utterly zany and music-driven, but it’s not a “singing musical” so to speak like FZ. It has surrealistic elements, thanks to my insane special effects department--and a little help from Hieronymus Bosch—but I would describe Geeks having cartoony elements rather than being a total “human cartoon” as FZ was…if that makes any sense. (And please don’t try!)
Q. Tell us about the multiple roles played by your family – and do you have role as well? What was it like working with your family – any funny stories?
My son Bodhi Elfman—a serious dramatic actor with 100s of credits--did a great comic turn as Eddy, the lead; a bitter out of work actor who wakes up with the key to the universe stuck up his ass. He also played the ass-kissing clown (literally) on the space ship plus the green alien network executive who orders the destruction of Earth. My wife Anastasia played multiple roles, everything from a nun to a carny slut. She also danced and choreographed the cabaret burlesque numbers as well as played a clown…until she got sick from the chemicals inside the clown mask and had to throw up—after we got the shot, of course--committed trouper that she is. When I met Anastasia she was a ballet dancer with a “day job” at a horror fx shop. She can dance with a broken toe but seems to have developed a sensitivity to certain shop chemicals.
I played a clown as well and almost threw up from laughing. I must say Geeks was a fun show to work on (my greatest joy is creating a sense of fun) and the actors and crew had serious trouble keeping from laughing as I directed in insane clown attire. What a fucking visual!
And brother Danny—what can I say? As an independent (hence lower budget) film maker it helps when your little brother in Mozart.
Q. Tell us how you ran away and joined the circus.
Actually, The Grande Magic Circus--a French musical theatre company. 1971, I was twenty-one, visiting the Festival of New Theatre in Montreal. I ran into a scruffy Parisian street troupe. They had something though, a charisma, an élan, whatever-- it attracted me. Director Jérôme Savary needed a percussionist—et voila, that was me! I persuaded them to give me several minutes onstage at the festival doing my comedy/horror piece set to an Eric Satie’s Gnossienne. When I “killed” the pianist in a pool of blood the audience was shocked. And they loved it!
Then, back in California, I went to see Marcel Carne’s masterpiece Les Enfant de Paradise , a three hour film set in the Paris theatre scene of the 1830’s. I exited the theatre, stopped, turned around and went back in and saw it again.
A few months later I received a letter from Jerome. Peter Brook, famed director of London’s Royal Shakespeare Company was backing the Magic Circus in a large Paris theatre. Would I like to join them? Bloody hell!! Hence, I ran away and joined the “circus.”
Q. Tell us something about your time with the Magic Circus, how it influenced you and also how your brother Danny Elfman joined the show.
I might say that working with Jérôme Savary was perhaps my single greatest influence. The troupe had classically trained actors from the Comedie Francais as well as more Avant guard performers. Jerome was a genius, his material had a sense of Absurdism that really struck me. I would later develop this absurdism in my own fashion. Certainly with my own troupe, the Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo (later Oingo Boingo). By the way, my film Forbidden Zone was essentially our Mystic Knights stage show set to film.
Danny—several days out of high school--showed up at my 5ème, Rue Descartes doorstep with his electric violin. The company violinist was from the Paris Opera. Jerome liked to improvise. The opera guy couldn’t deviate one note from the written score. I believe my brother is Mozart reincarnated. He could follow any improvisation and got the job and toured with us for the summer throughout France. He and I opened the show with him on violin, me on percussion—the first music Danny Elfman ever wrote.
Q. Any other interesting experiences that you and Danny had there?
We were in a Basque town near the Spanish border. If I may digress, I am four years Danny’s senior. I went to a high school in Crenshaw (Boyz in the Hood), Danny ended up at a school with no guns. I was a tough boxer. Danny might be described as a bespectacled science nerd. So it’s Friday night, the audience was really rowdy and restless. My “street sense” knew it was just a matter of time before the fights broke out. We had an Argentine fellow in the troupe, “Katshurro,” nicest fellow. Drunks in the audience picked up on his accent and shouted terrible Spanish insults about his mother. Katshurro stopped mid-performance, his eyes bugging out of head, and he dove right into the audience swinging away. All hell broke loose. Everyone was fighting, sets crashing down. Danny’s glasses got knocked off. Well, and not for the first time, I managed to get Danny out of trouble with both his glasses and violin intact.
Q. Tell us about the cast you assembled – which includes Verne Troyer in his final screen performance. What was he like? Who does he play in the film?
I really had my dream cast. Along with my son Bodhi we had lovely kung-fu kicking Rebecca Forsythe, versatile Angeline-Rose Troy who not only played Rebecca’s sexy Swedish sister, but donned prosthetics to play poor Eddy’s junkie/whore “Mom from Hell.”
Professor von Scheisenberg was played impeccable veteran French Stewart (Third Rock From the Sun). Another great vet was George Wendt (Cheers) as Father Mahoney. Six foot six comic Steve Agee (Sarah Silverman Show, Guardians of the Galaxy) played both a tough cross-dressing bar owner and a stuttering dufis in a chicken suit. Nic Novicki (Boardwalk Empire) played his nasty little-person boss. I was really blessed with a great ensemble to work with.
And, of course, Verne Troyer, our megalomaniac Clown Emperor. What a wonderful talent to work with! He was funny on set, insisted on doing things in spite of physical limitations and he gave us hilarious comic improvisations. Little body. Big spirit. I will certainly miss him.
Q. The music is by Danny and you also have great animation… please give us some details what it’s like to create worlds through music and manufactured imagery.
Danny, along with my band mate--award winning animation composer Ego Plum (Guerrero)—really gave it to us. Seventy-five minutes of music in a ninety-minute film. ♪ ♫ La, tee-da and a boom boom boom! ♪ ♫ Music is essential to everything I do—especially setting the tone of my films. I even play music before I start writing.
As soon as Danny saw our surrealistic Bosch dream sequence and goofy clown rocket ships he agreed to do the score…after he stopped laughing. I play percussion in a quirky Latin band, Mambo Demonico, led by Hollywood’s top tv animation composer, Ego Plum. He and Danny work with the same people, including Oingo Boingo lead guitarist Steve Bartek, who subsequently has done every one of Danny’s film arrangements. Steve and the original Oingo Boingo members all played on our sound track. I must brag that we do have great fucking music!
You know, Danny was a bespectacled science nerd growing up, basically stayed out of trouble. That was my department. Oddly, he wasn’t really into music. No bands, no concerts, no big music collection. Life is funny how things turned out. I showed him a rough cut of Geeks, he laughed his ass off and offered to do it. Yes, I’m very lucky to have “Mozart” as my little brother!
Q. Who is Aliens, Clowns & Geeks for? Do you think movies like this are more likely to find a mainstream audience?
Forbidden Zone may be a “cult” movie but it still plays all over the world--after forty years. Just this past month FZ played festivals in France and South Korea. Geeks is certainly not for everyone—no one falls in love then dies of cancer. But it will find an audience I am sure. Anyone who had fun with Killer Klowns From Outer Space, liked Rocky Horror, even What We Do in the Shadows in terms of a quirky, wicked sense of humor. I also think it will play well in mental asylums…it certainly shall send people there in any case.
Geeks doesn’t fit into the scheme of “modern films.” Actually, the shooting style and underlying three-act story structure harkens back to classic comedies (says the son of a former English teacher turned novelist). The trappings though, are insane and off-the-wall. You might say it’s just my own, goony creation. Love it or hate it, the humor is balls-out outrageous, definitely not for everyone--no one dies of cancer. Geeks is simply meant to be fun for essentially the genre audience.
Q. What’s your proudest moment associated with making the film?
Proudest moment? Maybe finally paying the actors. People say I’ve embraced the indie spirit. I don’t know how much I “embrace” it, so much as am fucked by it, having to work on such a modest budget. Although I’ve been a “hired gun” and directed scripts written by others, Geeks is really the first time since my 1980 Forbidden Zone that I’ve really done purely my own vision. Per John Waters, well, I’d hope he’d have something strong to drink and/or smoke and then laugh his ass off watching it! That’s what it was like creating the film: Drinking scotch and smoking cigars in my rooftop writing garret, laughing my ass off! The green aliens have a totally high-tech ship, except for the automotive steering wheel and four-on-the-floor to shift gears. For the clowns we went for an absurdly updated version of Flash Gordon. And when our tiny clown emperor takes possession of an earth body, he has little dummy of the earthling sitting in his lap, their heads connected by electrical wires. Absurd and ridiculous, and that’s my middle name.
Want to see a double feature of The Forbidden Zone and Aliens, Clowns & Geeks? You can! They will play at The Regency in L.A. as part of The Valley Film Festival on 1/30/21. Get tickets here.

Be More Chill Cheerleader Jeremy AU, Toss of Faith
@webebroadwaybabies 's raffle request!
Jeremy didn't mind being in the cheer squad at much as he thought he would. It was usually fun and Brooke was there to help him with new routines. He didn't even mind that he had to wear a girl's uniform because that was all they had, he still got to wear shorts under the skirt. But if there was one thing he definitively did not like about being a cheerleader was the fact that out of all the girls on the squad they thought he'd be the easiest to toss.
Jeremy was always at the top of the pyramid and the one who the team had to throw. As a result he was also the one who constantly got hurt all the time. Everything from a sprained ankle from when their pyramid collapsed to a broken wrist when his teammates didn't catch him on time. Today was the first actual game of the year they were performing at and Jeremy wasn't looking forward to the lack of safe guards as their captain forbade him from wearing a helmet.
Walking out into the football field with his teammates Jeremy looked out nervously to see the cheering crowd.
"Don't worry Jeremy, as soon as you get into the routine it'll be like they're not even there!"
"They're not what I'm worried about," Jeremy said as he held his still healing wrist.
"Don't worry, I promise you won't be dropped this time!'' Despite Brooke's reassurance Jeremy couldn't help but be nervous as they walked to center field. Jeremy's eyes caught sight of his boyfriend in the stands frantically washing to him. Michael wasn't wearing a shirt allowing Jeremy to see his body now covered in red and white paint. Jeremy snorted slightly before Chloe spoke up.
"Alright! Time for the routine! Everyone get in formation and Stacie make sure you actually help catch Jeremy this time." Jeremy gulped as the blonde stood next to him and they began to dance. He focused on Michael the entire time before he felt himself get lifted by Stacie making him take a deep breath as he tried to stay as still as physically possible before being thrown in the air. He watched himself get closer to the air before he fell backwards into the waiting arms of his teammates. This was only for a brief moment before he hit the ground and his leg twisted under him as he let out a weird noise that sounded similar to a pterodactyl screech when this happened.
"Holy shit!"
"Jeremy, are you okay?"
"Damn it Stacie."
"I tried!" The cheerleaders milled around him as Jeremy felt his Jeremy twitch in pain when he tried to reach for it but quickly stopped. He was in the ground until he felt a pair of strong arms lift him up and the teen's eyes that had been scrunched shut opened to see a worried Michael holding him.
"Dude, are you okay?!" Michael asked making Jeremy smile despite the pain.
"You're...getting paint on my uniform...ow..." Jeremy's pained groan was all Michael needed to start rushing off the field while holding his boyfriend. The crowd had stopped focusing on the game to watch Michael and Jeremy go off field. The relative silence was broken by Rich in the bleachers who started laughing.
"Ha, Gay!" Brooke's pom poms quickly hit his face knocking the smaller teen to the ground.

Its 11:36 pm dark
I admit,I never watched the Lifetime Channel when I had cable TV. The only thing I knew about it was that it re-ran “Unsolved Mysteries” and older TV films. The only original series I ever heard about that they aired was a show called “Army Wives”. That was the extent of what I knew about Lifetime.
But since I have dropped cable,I found out that Lifetime has evolved into both airing new original films like “Last Man Standing” and “Blindsided” of which the cheetah and I picked up. Its known for being the anti-Hallmark Channel for women as they do action-adventure films centered around strong women characters. Lifetime has also done more TV series as well and “Drop Dead Diva” was one of these series. It ran for six seasons from 2009-2014 and was produced by Sony Pictures Television. There were 78 episodes produced, since cable TV seasons are shorter then network seasons, instead of getting a 22 episode season run,”Diva” only had 13 shows..which meant a TON of story telling had to be done in a smaller time frame.
youtube
Thanks to our good friends over at Mill Creek Entertainment, shows like “Drop Dead Diva”are getting a chance to be watched by folks like the cheetah and myself who missed out during its original run. And instead of looking for singles seasons that may be hard to find (Highlander, anyone?),Mill Creek has released the entire series in one boxed set which is a great way to enjoy a binge watch without having to worry about missing seasons.
“Drop Dead Diva” is the story of Jane Bingum, a plus sized lawyer who dies by saving her firm’s boss who was having an affair with a woman who didn’t know was married. At the same time budding model Deb Dobkins is killed while she is talking on her cellphone. When Deb goes to heaven, she meets an angel named Fred who tells Deb she has led a completely nothing life. Deb wants to go back to Earth and a little miffed at Fred, she presses the “Go Back” button but ends up in Jane’s body. While Deb is still Deb,she gets to retain Jane’s mind which includes a sharp legal brain. But otherwise,Jane is gone and Deb is going to have to naviagate her life in Jane’s body.
Fred is sent to Earth as Deb’s guardian angel and he tells Deb the rules,no one can know Deb is still here, she has to become Jane in thought and deed. This becomes incredibly challenging as Deb’s boyfriend Grayson, has just landed a job at Jane’s firm the week both women died,in fact Jane was the one who interviewed Grayson.
Deb also has to learn her “new” job as a lawyer quickly as well as deal with her firm’s politics and co-workers who weren’t exactly kind to Jane..with Kim Kaswell being her biggest pain in the ass. But she also has allies in Stacy, the only person who knows Deb’s secret and Teri,Jane’s loyal assistant and friend.
This show is a comedy-drama with fantasy elements thrown in and it works very well. There isn’t any huge heavenly “saves” like on “Highway To Heaven” or “Touched By An Angel”. Deb is pretty much on her own as she learns to love herself in a plus sized body. Each episode features a couple of cases for Deb to work on with Deb adding in her own style with Jane’s legal brain. Deb encounters key moments from both Jane’s and her past lives and has to make adjustments which includes Kim and Grayson eventually become a couple and start dating. Deb is also quite shocked when she finds out that Jane was actually married to a man named Ethan, even though the marriage was a sham,Jane did have feelings for him at one time.
This series is told like a soap opera with several different stories winding through several seasons but for the most part, the court cases are settled by an episodes end. While “Drop Dead Diva”did stuggle a bit towards the end,the producers did get a 6th and last season to wind up the various stories and end the series with a proper and fitting ending.
I loved the cast on “Diva” very much and I really enjoyed several performances given by some very talented people led by the amazing Brooke Elliott as Jane/Deb. She is simply amazing in a dual role and worked her ass off making Jane a complex and rich person. Her compassion and raw honesty are worn on her sleeve and you feel like Brooke is just playing herself,Jane is really Brooke in real life. While appearing in only 9 episodes,I have to give Brooke (I know, right?) D’Orsay who played Deb Dobkins before she was put into Jane’s body. I really thought it was a smart move by show creator Josh Berman to make Deb very likable and sweet in her own right. While Jane and Deb walked in different worlds, they were also very decent human beings. Most shows would have forced Deb to be a bitch on wheels that has to learn to be a “good person” but that such a cliche and it was refreshing to see that Deb was a good person and a good friend even before she becomes Jane.
The supporting cast, led by Margaret Cho as Teri Lee and April Bowlby as Deb’s best friend Stacy, are all very good and fit their roles. You can read more about them here. Being this was a Lifetime show, the guest stars were also for the most part, pretty strong as well with a ton of well known names and faces including Bruce Davison,Leelee Sobieski,Nia Vardalos,Teri Polo and even Kim Kardashian. I enjoyed watching “Drop Dead Diva” and definitely can see why it ran for six years and had a very dedicated and passionate fan base. And now thanks to Mill Creek Entertainment, you all can experience quite a charming and emotionally moving show by buying the complete series in one collection. “Drop Dead Diva” can be bought by going to the Mill Creek Amazon page.
Have you ever watched “Drop Dead Diva”? We would like to hear your thoughts on the show and its cast so feel free to drop a comment or three below.
