Catering to the food movie, 'The Taste of Things' serves up a mouthwatering feast
NEW YORK
Think of food and movies and your mind could quickly whip up a five-course meal. Maybe a few hard-boiled eggs, to start, from âCool Hand Luke.â A side order of toast from âFive Easy Pieces,â followed by the soup from âRatatouille.â A main course of octopus from âOldboy.â And letâs wash all that down with a $5 shake from âPulp Fiction.â
Since before Charlie Chaplin made bread rolls dance in âThe Gold Rush,â cinema and cuisine have been as intertwined as the spaghetti of âThe Lady and the Tramp.â But a real food movie â one that doesnât just stop for noodles (âIn the Mood for Loveâ) or take a trip to Katzâs (âWhen Harry Met SallyâŠâ) â is a rarer delicacy.
Those movies that fully invest themselves in the making and consuming food are more all-your-eyes-can-eat buffets. Films like âTampopo,â that wildly erotic ode to ramen; âBabetteâs Feast,â with its sumptuous banquet; and âEat Drink Man Woman,â Ang Leeâs nourishing family meal.
Itâs a rich and savory tradition that gets a delicious new serving in Tráș§n Anh HĂčngâs âThe Taste of Things.â If ever a film was a feast, itâs HĂčngâs. The movie, starring Juliette Binoche and BenoĂźt Magimel, opens with a glorious 40-minute scene set in a late 19th century French country kitchen where a meal is being prepared.
Butter is sizzling. Loins of veal are roasting. Fresh crayfish are peeled. A fish is gutted. Soup bubbles. Few words are said but the kitchen hums. Utensils clank. Merengue burns. Steam rises.
Thereâs no music but itâs a symphony. EugĂ©nie (Binoche), the right-hand woman of top chef Dodin Bouffant (Magimel), works with quiet, assured mastery. Itâs as riveting as any action-movie set piece.
âI told my crew: This is my car-chase scene,â says HĂčng.
HĂčng, the 61-year-old French-Vietnamese filmmaker, traces his love of cinema to his father, who would come home in South Vietnam with detailed descriptions of movies he had seen at the cinema, riveting HĂčng. But his motherâs kitchen, he says, âgave me my first feeling of beauty.â
âThe Taste of Things,â which opens in select theaters Friday, isnât just about cooking. Like most movies about food, its appreciation of cuisine has as much to do with love and art as recipes and ingredients. Loosely inspired by Marcel Rouffâs classic 1924 novel âThe Passionate Epicure,â âThe Taste of Things" unfolds as a later-in-life love story, one with added poignance since Binoche and Magimel were, themselves, a couple 20 years earlier.
To HĂčng, who recently spoke by phone during a trip to Vietnam (he lives in Paris), his mouthwatering opening scene, in all its sensory pleasures, is a paean to cinema.
âIn musicals, itâs about harmony and the expression of love and pleasure,â says HĂčng. âAll of this was inside of me and I wanted to express it in this first scene in the kitchen where people move a lot. The level of gesture is enormous. How they move combined with complex camera movement, that came from musicals for me.â
France selected âThe Taste of Thingsâ as the countryâs Oscar submission over the much-celebrated âAnatomy of a Fall." At last yearâs Cannes Film Festival, it won best director for HĂčng.
HĂčngâs 1993 Oscar-nominated breakthrough âThe Scent of Green Papayaâ was likewise lush in atmosphere and sensuality. But while he admires some of the classic food movies â âEat Drink Man Womanâ especially â he doesnât often feel they express what he wanted to accomplish with âThe Taste of Things.â
âToday, I think films are really poor in cinema. Most of the time, itâs a theme of an important topic of the world today and then wrapped in very poor cinema. It looks like an illustration of a story,â he says. âTo me, there is nothing to eat in that. I donât feel full when I watch that type of film. There are too many like this. You can win the Palme dâOr with a very poor quality of cinema in the movie.â
Many reviews of âThe Taste of Thingsâ have come with a warning: Do not see this film on an empty stomach. But HĂčng supplies no such caution.
âNo, I think itâs interesting to be hungry, and waiting for the next meal,â he says, chuckling. âI never get panicked when I get hungry. I like to listen to it and wait so that what I have later is more delicious.â
Foodie photographs of a perfect plate have long been popular fodder for Instagram â the kind of gastronomy lampooned in the 2022 haute cuisine satire âThe Menu.â But âThe Taste of Thingsâ is earthy and grubby. The food â none of which was artificially enhanced to look better â was all real. Famed French chef Pierre Gagnaire designed the dishes that were cooked on location by Michel Nave. For the filmâs final meal, in which a triumphant pot-au-feu is prepared, some 90 pounds of meat were used.
Suffice to say, the cast and crew of âThe Taste of Thingsâ ate well.
âEverything we did was real,â says HĂčng. "So at the end of the day, we had to eat everything. No waste at all.â

In April 2020, as COVID was circumnavigating the globe and demolishing normalcy everywhere, The New York Times published an article titled âHow Long Will a Vaccine Really Take?â Although Trump-administration officials aimed to unveil a COVID vaccine within 18 monthsâthat is, by the fall of 2021âthe journalist Stuart Thompson reminded readers that the shortest time in history for developing a new vaccine was four years. âThe grim truth,â he wrote, âis that a vaccine probably wonât arrive any time soon.â But then it did. The first mRNA vaccines were administered before the end of 2020.
The COVID vaccines underline a second lesson from the smallpox story. Some technology myths make it seem like progress is exclusively the work of geniuses, untouched by the grubby hands of politicians and bureaucrats. But a rogue cadre of inventors didnât eradicate smallpox. States did. Agencies did. Progress is often political, because the policy decisions of states and international organizations frequently build the bridges between discovery and deployment.
The story of the mRNA vaccines can be traced back to the â90s, when the Hungarian-born scientist Katalin KarikĂł began her research on the pharmaceutical potential of mRNA, a small but mighty molecule that tells our cells what proteins to make. Her work, along with that of her fellow University of Pennsylvania researcher Drew Weissman, gradually raised our mastery of mRNA to the point where it could be deployed for a vaccine. In early 2020, within 48 hours of receiving the genetic sequencing of the coronavirus, Moderna had prepared its COVID-vaccine recipe, and BioNTech, a German firm that later partnered with Pfizer, had designed its own vaccine candidate.
These technological breakthroughs, building on decades of basic research, were themselves miracles. But alone, they werenât enough. The U.S. also needed a policy miracleâa feat of bureaucratic ingenuity that would make, distribute, and administer novel vaccines with record-breaking efficiency. We got just that with Operation Warp Speed, which belongs with the Apollo program and the Manhattan Project as one of the most important technology programs in the history of modern federal policy. It likely saved hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of lives.
From the beginning, Warp Speedâs job seemed nearly impossible. To create the fastest vaccine program ever, officials had to essentially map out the entire journey of a new therapyâfrom research and clinical trials to regulatory approval and distributionâand turn this obstacle course into something like a glide path. They invested in both traditional and mRNA vaccine approaches, paid up front for clinical trials, and placed billions of dollars in advance orders to urge pharmaceutical companies to move as fast as possible. When Moderna needed more manufacturing facilities, Warp Speed provided funding for additional factory space. When the government identified a shortage of the special material that mRNA vaccines require for ultracold transport, Warp Speed granted $347 million to SiO2 and Corning, two manufacturers of glass vials. And because standard vaccine approval from the FDA can take years, the programâs leaders allowed vaccine makers to proceed with emergency use authorizations to speed up the review process.
âThe single most important thing that Operation Warp Speed did was to provide a whole-of-government urgencyâ to the goal of rapid deployment, Caleb Watney, a co-founder of the Institute for Progress, told me. âGetting everything right meant you needed to make a million correct decisions in the right order.â If the government had bet only on traditional vaccine technology, we would have had no mRNA therapies. If the government hadnât done extensive supply-chain mapping in the summer of 2020, the initial vaccine rollout might have taken months rather than weeks. And if the government hadnât bought out vaccines from the pharmaceutical companies, they wouldnât have been free to consumers. But because Operation Warp Speed did all of this, the vaccines were expeditiously approved, manufactured, and distributed at no cost to the public.
Warp Speed was a special case, essentially a wartime policy applied to a health crisis. Few people would recommend such an aggressive approach for developing ordinary consumer technology. And the government is certainly capable of making bad choices as to exactly what technology to develop, and how. But while too much government action on this front can waste money, too little can waste time and even lives, stymieing possible breakthroughs. Warp Speed showed that smart government action can accelerate discovery and deployment. Just as significant, it showed that the kinds of bets the government can place, such as FDA reforms, donât necessarily involve spending any money at all.

Book of the month / 2021 / 08 August
I love books. Even though I hardly read any. Because my library is more like a collection of tomes, coffee-table books, limited editions... in short: books in which not "only" the content counts, but also the editorial performance, the presentation, the curating of the topic - the book as a total work of art itself.
Through a different Lens
Stanley Kubrick (& Sean Corcoran, Donald Albrecht, Luc Sante)
Photography / 1997 / Taschen Publishing House
Every now and then, I sentence the kids to watch movies that I think are relevant - whether from a personal or a cinematic point of view. While my little son tends to be served light fare like "Blues Brothers," my big daughter sometimes has to chew a little harder, as happened the other day with "2001: A Space Odyssey." Her enthusiasm was a bit restrained, even if I exclaimed about 23 times, "That movie is from 1968. There were no special effects then, it's all actually built!".
Even regardless of that aspect, this epic can be considered groundbreaking. From the genre reference of the classical music background and the excellent script, to the technological authenticity and the almost psychedelic color scheme, to the revolutionary camera work. Above all, the visual composition of this film is the true mastery of director Stanley Kubrick, who is not considered one of the most important filmmakers of all time for nothing. Of course, I also have the matching book in my library ("The Making of Stanley Kubrick's '2001: A Space Odyssey'", also from Taschen, of course), but this time it's about another work of this visually powerful creator: his early work, photography.
"In the Streets of New York" is the title of the publisher's documentary "Through a different Lens" on the occasion of an exhibition of the same name at the Museum of the City of New York. For it was there that Kubrick, just 17 years old, went on his first stalk of optical impressions. In 1945, he signed on as a photographer for the magazine "Look," for which he photographed stories with a human touch in the streets, clubs and sports arenas of New York City for five years. In the process, he captured with his camera just about everything that made up life in the Big Apple in that era: People in the laundromat, the hustle and bustle at Columbia University, sports stars, showgirls in their dressing rooms, performers in the circus, Broadway actresses rehearsing their lines, cab drivers changing a tire, couples kissing on the train platform, shoe shine boys, boxers reconsidering their career choice in the ring corner, patients in their dentist's waiting room, prominent businessmen, politicians, children in the amusement park, and commuters on the Subway.
Even these photographs from Kubrick's younger years reveal a startling sense of composition, tension, and atmosphere, and seem like film stills to never-shot dramas from the jungles of the big city. "This exhibition reveals how (Kubricks) formative years laid the groundwork for his compelling storytelling and dark visual style. They also show a noir side of New York that's no longer around." (Vanity Fair) "Photography, and particularly his years with Look magazine, laid the technical and aesthetic foundations for a way of seeing the world and honed his ability to get it down on film. There, he mastered the skill of framing, composition and lighting to create compelling images," explains Sean Corcoran, curator of the exhibition "Through a different Lens" and co-author of the book. Apparently, it was clear to the young man from the very beginning where his talent lay and how he was able to hone and master it.
Stanley Kubrick was born in New York City on July 26, 1928, as the first of two children. His parents came from Jewish families, and all of his grandparents had immigrated from Austro-Hungarian Galicia. His early passions were excessive reading, cinema and chess. He was first gifted a camera, a Graflex, from his father when he was 13 years old. And he immediately took off as a photographer for the William Howard Taft High School student newspaper. After graduation, he turned his hobby into a career and at the age of 18 became a full-time photographer for Look, to which he had previously sold amateur photos. As early as 1950, Kubrick directed his first documentary, "Day of the Fight", about life in and around the boxing ring, which he had already explored photographically. Although only 16 minutes long, the film was already considered a sensational study at the time. His future career path was set, the rest is history.
"Through a Different Lens" was an extremely successful exhibition, which subsequently also went on tour. Not only Kubrick fans were impressed by the mastery of optical staging that was already visible at an early stage. Corcoran: "Kubrick learned through the camera's lens to be an acute observer of human interactions and to tell stories through images in dynamic narrative sequences. (His) ability to see and translate an individual's complex psychological life into visual form was apparent in his many personality profiles for the publication. His experiences at the magazine (Look) also offered him opportunities to explore a range of artistic expressions. Overall, Kubrick's still photography demonstrates his versatility as an image maker. Look's editors often promoted the straightforward approach of contemporary photojournalism at which Kubrick excelled. It's clear he always got the photographs that were needed for the assignment, but that he was also unafraid to make pictures that excited his own aesthetic sensibility."
Beyond the 100 photographs in the exhibition, the book presents 300 of Kubrick's images, including unpublished shots and outtakes. Annotated by Corcoran, his colleague Donald Albrecht, and renowned writer and critic Luc Sante, who has published most notably in Interview and Harper's. They place the motifs in their context, refer to stylistic aspects, and thus point to Kubrick's (imminent) artistic career. Above all, in contrast to the exhibition, the book offers all friends of photography - whether fans of Kubrick or not - a rare insight into the proverbial pioneering early work of a brilliant artist. And into one of the most interesting eras of the "city that never sleeps" - yes, even Frank Sinatra was photographed by young Kubrick.
From the extensive, mostly euphoric reviews of the book "Through a different Lens" or the oeuvre documented in it, let's take one example each from a professional and an amateur:
"The man who later led a genre to its lonely high point and at the same time to its final point with each of his films knew already at the age of barely 17, that's how old he was at the time, that expression and form shape every impression." (Die Welt)
"I can't praise this book enough. Wonderful collection and very informative. An absolute must for those wishing to understand more of how Kubrick valued the frame." (Yvi on amazon.com)
P.S.: Just for the sake of completeness, let's mention Kubrick's cinematic output after his breakthrough: 1960: Spartacus / 1962: Lolita / 1964: Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb / 1968: 2001: A Space Odyssey / 1971: A Clockwork Orange / 1975: Barry Lyndon / 1980: The Shining / 1987: Full Metal Jacket / 1999: Eyes Wide Shut. No, this is not a selection of greatest hits, this is a complete listing. And thus the proof that he has indeed realized a significant peak in the respective genre. His great influence on the history of cinema is also shown by the fact that he is the only director to appear a total of five times in the list of the 100 films with the best critics' ratings.
In addition, two side notes: Kubrick spent several years preparing a film biopic about Napoleon Bonaparte. The preparations were so far along that he could have started production at any time. However, the release of "Waterloo" (1970) and its poor financial results dissuaded him and the film studio from the project. The project has since been known as "The greatest Movie never made". He also dealt intensively with the subject of the Holocaust. After the release of "Schindler's List" (1993), however, he discarded these plans explaining that Steven Spielberg had already told all the essential.
Stanley Kubrick died of a heart attack on March 7, 1999, in his home at Childwickbury Manor near London, where he had lived in seclusion since the 1960s and had set up studio and editing rooms in the former stables.

Subsystems and You 7 part 1
Alternate Capstones
One of the coolest things about leveling up in a single class is the promise that at the end, youâll get an incredible ability that elevates you to a whole new tier of power, many of which could be argued to be similar to near-demigod status, or at least so legendary that the stories of your characterâs prowess will shape the setting thereafter.
However, like so many things in Pathfinder, not everyone approaches that zenith of power the same way, and so, with the final paperback of first edition: Chronicle of Legends, weâre going to take a look at some alternate capstone abilities. Iâll mostly be focusing on those of classes weâve already done reviews of, saving the alternate capstones of the others for when I review them as well. That being said, there is also a handful of other capstone abilities that are more tied to recurring class features or other traits, rather than a specific class.
Obviously, a character cannot take one of these alternate capstones if they have an archetype that already replaces the capstone ability. Also, despite not truly having one, there is a class-specific capstone for both the cleric and wizard classes. Meanwhile, Alchemists and witches seem to lack one, though perhaps that is for the best, since their capstone is already a choice from a list.
The alternate capstones for the classes weâve reviewed thus far:
Barbarians can gain or increase their durability, not only against physical damage, but also most energy types.
Bards can learn a performance so compelling that it captivates even a hostile audience, allowing them to command the creature with ease, and leave them in starstruck awe for a long while afterwards.
Cavaliers can forgo horsemanship to become legendary commanders, gaining another teamwork feat and increasing the area their tactical commands can benefit.
Clerics forge an incredibly deep bond with their deity, and are constantly aware of their approval or disapproval of a course of action. Additionally, they can tap into a third domain associated with their deity.
Druids, similarly forge such a strong connection to a region that they understand innately everything about it, as well as draw power from it. They can ask questions about their home region, and their spells are more potent while within.
Fighters can become incredibly experienced, bolstering their training with both weapons and armor in broad strokes.
Gunslingers can master every black-powder weapon and anything else considered a gun , and they become even more deadly with them.
For some Inquisitors, itâs not about being the hammer that strikes evil, but about guiding those that require aid, and they become masters at quickly training allies to fight together against the darkness.
Monks, instead of reaching otherworldly perfection, can further refine their martial arts, striking and dodging with uncanny grace.
Some Paladins are shining avatars of inspiration for their fellows, their various protective auras protecting large swaths of area and those within.
Rangers have seen every trick under the sun, and can add their mastery against their favored enemies to help protect themselves from the abilities of such creatures.
Rogues can become true jacks of all trades, gaining an inherent bonus to every skill.
Rather than achieve the zenith of their bloodline, the magic of a Sorcerer can branch out in a unique, personal way, granting abilities mimicking a second bloodline up to an extent.
Wizards are notorious for being limited in the number of spells they can cast, but some of those at the zenith of power get around that, tapping into a greater reserve of lower to mid-level spell energy, granting them more spells to prepare an eclectic and diverse assortment with.
While weâre not covering all the other classes today, there is more. There is an entire other set of alternate capstones that you can also take, some having no requirement, others requiring a particular class feature.
Classes with familiars or spirit animals can gain bolster their companion into an Arch-Familiar, bolstering their intelligence, and granting a variety of spell-like abilities to them.
Sometimes a character becomes a legend in their own field, someone of authority that others look up to and take orders from. Any class can become The Boss, gaining or founding some great institution and acquiring followers from it. A mage might found a magical academy, while a martial class might become the leader of a mercenary army or other military or guard. While at itâs baseline they gain a massive number of followers, depending on the context, they might gain authority and other powers associated with the position.
Spontaneous casting classes are limited by their spells known, so some use their zenith to learn the Deep Magics, increasing the number of spells they understand.
Classes with animal companions might choose for their partner to become a Great Beast, becoming legendary in physical might and cunning.
Though few, those classes with a ki pool can choose to become Ki Sages, bolstering their capacity for spiritual energies and learning two new powers drawn from those known to unchained monks.
Martial classes that grant bonus feats tend to be Old Dogs at 20th level, but they still have some New Tricks, gaining an additional handful of combat techniques.
The body and mind are the basis from which all characters get their start, and some express the height of power with a Perfect Body, and Flawless Mind, gaining a pool of points to distribute across their ability scores.
The base principle of sneak attacks is not just striking a foe while unawares, but also actually hitting the perfect spot, and some characters that can sneak attack choose to learn to do so with such regularity that they can deal grievous injury even to foes that are fully aware of their presence, hitting The Right Spot.
Becoming true conduits of positive or negative energy, some with that ability become Soul Conduits, able to channel more often, and to greater heights.
Practially Walking Libraries, some spellcasters that learn and prepare spells hit a breakthrough at 20th level, gaining a vast number of known spells and greater insight into various topics as well.
A few characters instead channel their potential into an iconic item such as a weapon, awakening it as a minor artifact with itâs own set of unique powers. With This Sword or other such items, their stories become all the greater and are rarely seperable.
Finally, some legendary heroes simply Wonât Stay Dead. Limited to once a week, these characters miraculously survive a lethal blow or permanently incapacitating effect, as if the gods of luck themselves are watching out for them.
And that does it for the alternate capstones that weâll be going over today. Expect to see more added on to future class review specials. Itâs also worth noting that while they didnât get proper capstones, alchemist and witch did each get a new grand discovery and grand hex in that section of the book too, namely one that bolsters bomb damage to ungodly levels, and a mad dance that grants flight and buffs all participants.
While not for every player or build, these alternate capstones do fulfill a niche in that some class capstones donât help out certain builds that much, letting you pick a better one that more suits what youâre doing with the character. For example, many rogues would rather further master their skills than become especially adept at killing or paralyzing others.
In any case, I hope you enjoyed this. Tune in this week for more fun subsystems within the game!

Orthodox Jewish Dating Sites
Orthodox Jewish Dating Websites
Free Jewish Dating Sites
Brooke, 30, an Orthodox woman divorced for six years, wants a meaningful relationship that will lead to marriage, but that is proving to be a challenge. She has tried matchmakers, popular in her circle, but most of them donât give thought to the matches, ignoring her personal qualities and tastes. Sheâs tried Jewish dating sites too. But, she finds them âfree for all and creepy.â Many of the men want to date casually, or just hook up. Some even create fake profiles.
Mazaltov.org is where marriage minded Jewish singles come to find true love. Our unique approach to creating a Jewish dating site has resulted in many success stories. We blend cutting-edge technology with our unique human touch, to create an online community like no other Jewish dating site. 3 reasons to choose Jewish dating sites. Here are 3 reasons to choose Mingle2 Jewish dating site: đ Secure verification: All members are personally confirmed by our staff to prove they are real. We provide you with real potential partners that are here for the same reasons as you. đ Quick to register: Registering an account and creating a.
In 2018, being Orthodox no longer offers the security of ongoing community support, and for single millennials, finding a partner is a solitary pursuit. While Jewish communities still value marriage and family above all, the burden of coupling falls on the singles.Yossi, 32, and Shira Teichman, 31, a married Orthodox couple from Los Angeles have drawn on their life experiences to create a technological solution to this dilemma. Together with life coach Shiffy,Lichtenstein, they are the co-creators of forJe a dating app for Jewish singles, like Brooke, who are seeking long-term relationships.
Chaim Orzel, 27, who grew up in a âvery Orthodox homeâ and now describes himself as âConservadoxâ, is ready to give the new app a try. He bemoans the shallowness of dating sites that promote pretty profiles and impressive job titles over internal gifts. âThe problem is that itâs making marriage a transactional experience. What happens if a guy loses his job, or he has a stroke, heaven forbid? Free unpaid dating sites. External things wonât keep a marriage together.â
The Teichmans share this view. âWe both have PHDs in dating,â says Shira wearily, in a telephone interview with this reporter. Before meeting one another in 2014, she says: âWe had gone to all the matchmakers and the singles events. We were meeting a multitude of people, but nothing was working.â Yossi recalls that most dating coaches just gave advice on appearances.
The disappointment led Shira, who has an MA in education, to study with experts such as Leonard Carr, a psychologist who runs growth courses on relationships and âpersonal masteryâ (https://www.leonardcarr.com/index.html), hoping to better understand herself. âI wanted to understand what drives me, what holds me back. Once I started understanding myself, I realized my dating was changing already. I was in a more powerful position to find the right partner.â
Shira decided to share this new sense of power and began running dating workshops called âBreakthrough Dating.â âBeing able to develop a connection is a very tangible skill,â she explains. While Shira says many millennials will go on a date, not feel âa sparkâ, and then end the budding relationship, she believes they need to learn a process she calls âthe anatomy of building a relationship.â
Positive feedback followed the early events. Out of 40 individuals at one of her first events, four ended up getting married. So, when Yossi entered the picture, the workshops became a shared passion. After each event, the couple would distribute surveys, later reviewed by psychologist Rabbi David Pelcovitz, chair of education and psychology at Yeshiva University.
Statistics in hand, a year and a half ago, the couple began serious work on forJe. Yossi worked with a team of other programmers to code what he calls âthe first dating app to use Artificial Intelligence.â To screen out fraudsters, the app requires users to scan their driversâ license. That information is then compared to the information provided from Facebook or Google when the user makes a profile. Once the app is satisfied that the individual is not a scammer, personal information is deleted and never shared, Yossi says.
The need for such a high level of user safety is the result of an increase in catfishing, or the act of luring someone into a relationship based on a false online persona. Since 2005, numerous websites like romancescams.org and Facebook forums have been created to help victims of these crimes. In the last six months of 2014 alone, the FBI reported that 82 million dollars of money was stolen through such scams, as reported by the podcast Criminal.
Ben Rabizadeh, the CEO of JWed, a Jewish dating site in which over 50% of users are Orthodox, said that his site faces threats from these international scammers. Fraudsters create fake profiles, get into an online relationship, and then ask for money. âWe screen out a large majority of fraudulent profiles during initial signup; but occasionally something slips through and in those cases, we promptly respond to complaints and remove users who are not eligible to join JWed.â
ForJeâs decision to increase security is also a response to locals who lie about their marital status on Jewish dating sites. Rabizadeh says he is shocked to hear of religious married men saying they are single to pursue single women. âThis has never come up except for the rare circumstance where a couple is separated and not yet legally divorced.â
But women interviewed for this article say it does happen. Brooke describes her worst experience â a man who created four different profiles and even changed the cadence of his voice when speaking on the phone as the various personas. âHe also had a wife and girlfriend,â she added. âThere are men who are married or in relationships and lie about their status,â says Jackie, 32, who acknowledges that she finds dating sites helpful, despite the perils.
ForJe is taking these reports seriously. And the next step in creating a profile is also aimed at screening out fraudsters. Users must answer a lengthy series of multiple choice questions. The type of questions reflects the Teichmansâ interest in self-knowledge and include probing queries such as âIf you won a large sum of money, how would you use it?â and âHow do you determine if youâve had a good week?â The list takes a while to get through, but the time required has an objective, according to Yossi. âWe want to weed out people that are just looking for hook-ups,â he says emphatically.
As users answer more questions and interact with the app, it is programmed to get to know their unique selves â at least as well as a machine can âknowâ a human. Every day, users are presented with up to three matches. The low number of potentials is also there to encourage committed dating. There is no opportunity for rapidly judging the attractiveness of scores of photographs, a practice associated with other apps.â
Most dating apps today are not really dating apps. They are social media platforms and have all the features Facebook does. They just want people to be addicted and stay in. We arenât interested in that. We are interested in you finding compatible matches.âBut will singles trust a machine to set them up? Girls dating app.
Orthodox Jewish Dating Websites
Jackie, who describes herself as Jewishly âtraditionalâ, says she would give the concept a try. âSeems like anything would be better than the matchmakers at Saw You at Sinai,â she says, naming a popular Orthodox site which uses remote matchmakers to set users up. âMachines arenât focused on what they get out of it, so that would probably be more accurate matching,â agrees Brooke, referring to matchmakers in general.
The app is potentially great news, according to Rabbi Mark Wildes, an Orthodox rabbi who founded and directs the Manhattan Jewish Experience, an organization where millennial men and women in their 20s and 30s can explore Jewish life and meet new people. âAny kind of technology that allows people to be more honest will be helpful to more serious-minded daters.â he says. However, he cautions that young people overuse technology for dating â breaking up over text and not giving shy people a chance. âPeople are not as fast as computers,â he says.
Another challenge he has observed is that millennials have lost their faith in marriage. When it comes to the challenges faced by Orthodox singles, Rabbi Wildes thinks the answer may lie in grassroots matchmaking. âIt should be a mandate for every young couple in the first 24 months of their marriage to fix people up. We need to increase the pool of matchmakers. Feeling a little gratitude that you found that special someone? Pay it back.â
But while Jewish singles wait for their married friends to set them up, they are finding ways to empower themselves. Signing up for an artificially intelligent matchmaker is one way to do that.
Another form of empowerment is taking a chance on love, says Orzel. He believes the Orthodox single crisis can be solved by a collective change in attitude. âIn Hebrew ahava means love, the root word, hav in Hebrew is to give. So, to love someone, you must give to that person. Without giving, there is no love. In our dating life today, there is no concept of unconditional love.â

Ultimate Copywriting
 Buy Now
If youâre looking for a way to make money from writingâŠ
  Special Report by Paul HancoxÂ
How would you like to be part of an industry whereâŠ
Thereâs always a big demand for your services, regardless of the state of the economy?âŠ
Youâre the boss⊠you can get up when you want, and finish whenever you want?âŠ
You can do it wherever you like â at home, in an office, or even from the beach?
Thereâs no fixed upper limit to the money you could make, depending on your skills?
It might sound too good to be true, but there IS an industry where all of this can happen.
Itâs the world of copywriting.
A copywriter is someone who writes persuasive sales material. This form of writing is called âcopy.â As long as you can write reasonably well, and have the skills Iâll show you, you could become a copywriter.
The facts areâŠ
(1) Good copywriters are always in demand.
Millions of new businesses are started each year, and they all need sales. Great âcopyâ from a skilled copywriter can turn readers into buyers.
(2) You can write âcopyâ just about anywhere.
You can write from your computer at home, from a laptop in a Starbucks, or even the beach or countryside! You can do it part time or full time, itâs up to you.
(3) Thereâs no real limit to what you could make.
Some of the worldâs top copywriters have made literally millions of dollars a year. (Iâll tell you their secrets later on.)
But I want to be completely straight with you.
Itâs
highly unlikely youâll get anywhere close to that to begin with. Not impossible, just unlikely.
New copywriters might charge $500 or $1,000 to write a sales letter like the one youâre reading now.
More experienced copywriters might charge $2k, $5k or even $10k⊠and some negotiate a % of the sales revenue, which can really add up for big selling products.
So the question isâŠ
How can YOU become a copywriter⊠and whatâs the quickest, easiest and best route to making good money from copywriting?
First of all, you need to understandâŠ
Despite What They Say, Hereâs Why The Classic Books And Courses Are Probably The Worst Ways To Master Copywriting
There are hundreds of copywriting books out there⊠but they have major drawbacks, if you want to QUICKLY become a highly paid copywriter.
(1) A book canât give you the critical feedback you need, so you know how youâre doing. Without feedback, itâs easy to
make mistakes, develop weaknesses and fall into bad habits.
(2) It canât keep you motivated. It canât give you a pat on the back when youâre doing well, or a kick up the rear end when you need it! With a book, youâre on your own.
(3) The so-called âclassicâ copywriting books were written in a different era⊠usually before the Internet, and almost certainly before all the breakthroughs in consumer psychology weâve seen over the past 5-10 years.
(4) Itâs likely to end up gathering dust on the shelf. That 500 page copywriting âclassicâ can be a handy reference for how to sell in the 1970âs⊠but you need to wade through it all to fully benefit from it.
(5) OR youâll try and âcramâ it all at once into your brain. Ever tried eating a monthâs worth of food in one day? Didnât think so. It doesnât work for your stomach, and the same is true for your brain. You canât cram if you want to get GOOD at copywriting.
(6) They donât reveal their best secrets. Copywriters tend to hold back in their books. I know, because Iâve read many of them.
Theyâre not going to reveal their âtrade secretsâ in a $30 mass market book!
(7) You donât get to see the ârawâ copy or drafts. Copywriting veteran Joseph Sugarman says writing copy is like turning rough coal into a smooth diamond. Most books only show you the final copy, so you never get to see the messy PROCESS of turning coal into diamonds.
By the way, most of this also applies to the DVDs and seminars put out by veteran copywriters.
In some ways, the situation is worse. Youâre usually paying anywhere from $500 to $3,000 for those.
The DVDs are usually seminar recordings⊠and there can be a lot of filler, as the copywriter spends a long time tackling questions from members of the audience who are the slowest to catch on.
You can be left with the feeling that a 10 hour DVD set could have been boiled down to 2-3 hours of solid material, IF they trimmed the fat⊠but I guess they wouldnât be able to charge quite as much!
Of course, with DVDs, youâre passively watching or listening to the information, so thereâs no opportunity to practice and get feedback.
When you write your first piece of copy, having an expert to provide you with reliable feedback is a MUST⊠and a pre-recorded set of DVDs canât give you that.
Even in a live seminar setting, the host canât usually spend more than a few minutes with each person. In other words, forget about them reviewing your drafts and final copy!
So letâs talk aboutâŠ
The Quickest And Best Way To Become A Highly
Paid Copywriter
Thereâs simply no way round it.
If you want to QUICKLY become a copywriter who could make a lot of money, you needâŠ
In-depth
and up-to-date training on each of the skills needed to write persuasive copy,
Practice, along with expert feedback, on all stages of the copywriting process, from figuring out who the target audience is, and what they want⊠right through to the final draft, andâŠ
Someone
to give you the motivation to keep going, especially during those times when you might be tempted to throw in the towel.
Let me show you how to get all of this.
My nameâs Paul Hancox, and Iâve been writing sales copy for about 20 years now.
Behind the scenes, Iâve written for people youâve probably never heard of, along with celebrity names such as Chicken Soup For
The Soul co-creator Jack Canfield, real estate guru Robert G Allen, and veteran speaker and marketing expert Brian Tracy.
Since 2010, Iâve also been coaching new copywriters. At first, it was mainly to keep my own copywriting skills sharp⊠but I soon found that I really enjoyed training others.
I came to see all the mistakes made by new students. One of the biggest ones made by a handful of them wasâŠ
trying to rush through the training.
I understand why they did it. Itâs human nature to want results NOW. We call it âinstant gratification.â
The ones who rushed wanted to be
stupendously
paid great copywriters, practically overnight!
These were the ones who spent much longer writing sales letters, because their drafts were much weaker.
The truth isâŠ
Itâs quite easy to get a superficial knowledge of whatâs going on in a sales letter.
Thatâs why
reading a book can fool you into thinking you know how to write great copy.Let me put it like this: Would you have brain surgery from a guy whoâd just finished reading âHow To Perform Brain Surgeryâ the week before?
Of course not!
N
ow, copywriting
will rarely be as dramatic or life-threatening as poking around with someoneâs brain!⊠but to get good still takes time, practice, and expert feedback and guidance.
Most copywriters will tell you it takes YEARS to achieve mastery⊠but my goal has been to cut that learning curve down to just months.
I wanted to make the process of âgetting goodâ as fast and effective as possible, making sure you have the feedback, training and motivation you needâŠ
⊠and just as importantâŠ
I wanted to keep it affordable, just a small monthly cost rather than an enormous lump sum youâd have to slap down at the start.
After all, not everyone can afford the outrageous fees some copywriters charge for
personal
mentoring. (Weâre usually talking thousands of dollars. One even charges $10k for a 2 hour phone call with him!)
Thatâs why I want to introduce you to
the Ultimate
Copywriting membership program.Itâs the fastest and most effective way of MASTERING the highly valuable skill of copywriting.
Hereâs A Quick Overview Of How It Works.
Itâs a MONTHLY program, lasting for 12 months.
Each month youâll have access to 3 new Training Modules in downloadable PDF format. Iâve
chosen this pace, because itâs the speed that produces the best results for new students.
These modules are the heart of the training program.
Most modules contains what I call a âMissionâ⊠a fun assignment, designed to allow you to practice what youâve learned. Send back your Mission results to me, and Iâll give you personal feedback. This is a critical aspect of learning to become a good copywriter fast!
Many of the earlier Missions are designed so you can put together your first practice sales letter. But donât worry⊠Iâll be there for you every step of the way.
Each month youâll have access to 2-3 new âCopywriting Breakdownâ videos, where I analyze some of the best copy around, including a mix of classic and modern sales letters.
Starting from Month 4, youâll have access to new âWatch Me Write!â videos, where you get to see me write entire sales letters â including drafts â from scratch!
Your membership includes 4 âDeep Critiques.â (This service is available from Month 4.) One âDeep Critiqueâ includes feedback and analysis on up to 5 drafts of a sales letter youâre writing. I recommend you use these critiques to write and get feedback on practice sales letters, before you go âliveâ with clients.
Hereâs What Makes This Program Completely Unique.
You wonât get this kind of copywriter training anywhere else, and hereâs 5 big reasons why:
(1)
Itâs based on my unique âAgreement Point Systemâ⊠which I developed personally, after studying the latest scientific findings on what moves people to buy.
Research over the last 5-10 years shows that the order in which you present information to people, and the context, makes a BIG difference to how they respond.
All of the âclassicâ copywriting books were written well before this research was discovered, so they donât take advantage of the new knowledge.
My âAgreement Point Systemâ for copywriters does. Itâs based on what works NOW, not what worked in the 1970âs! (2) I have a unique approach to training, which I call âLayered Learning.â Itâs
the result of my 7+ years as a copywriting coach, which has involved a learning curve for me as well.At times, Iâve had to explain things a little differently, before a student has that âAhh⊠I get it!â moment. (By the way, thatâs another reason you need personal training. If you donât understand a point, you can always ask!)
Itâs caused me to keep coming up with newer and better ways toÂ
help students grasp important copywriting concepts and techniques. One method of my âLayered Learnningâ approach is to stealthily introduce a technique to you in advance, before I âofficiallyâ teach it to you.
A simple example would be: writing headlines and subheadlines in the modules, as if Iâm writing copy⊠before I officially teach you âHow To Write Great Headlines.â
This allows the deeper part of your brain to more easily understand the concepts involved, when I formally introduce them to you.
Actually, I do this a lot⊠for most of the techniques and concepts Iâll be teaching you, but you might not notice the first time round.
As well as helping you learn faster, it also means youâll learn even more, when you decide to re-read the training modules!
Iâve literally spent YEARS perfecting this âLayered Learningâ approach, which is another reason why this program is unique⊠and as youâll see, itâs totally worth it.
It achieves several thingsâŠ
It keeps you motivated and eager to learn more,
It gives you a much deeper understanding of important concepts,
It teaches you at multiple levels of your brain.
(3) You get to see the raw, messy underbelly of the copywriting process.
Most books only show you the end results⊠the sparkling diamond of winning copy thatâs been shaped from the rough coal.
But thatâs only giving you half the story!
Truth is, writing copy is a messy business. Even the top copywriters write multiple drafts⊠and if you saw their first efforts, youâd probably think, âWhat the ***** is this?!â
I think itâs important to show you it all⊠the ugly first drafts as well as the final sparkling copy.
Thatâs a vital part of the learning process.
Iâll show you some of my sales letters, along with the embarrasing early drafts⊠AND from Month 4, Iâll write some fresh ones for you, right on video, including the drafts!
With 7 years of copywriter coaching under my belt, Iâve also seen a LOT of ugly drafts from students.
I hate to break it to you, but your first draft will probably be just as ugly.
But donât worry⊠thatâs absolutely fine. Itâs why we call them âdraftsâ!
Iâll show you some of the mistakes made by previous students, so you can avoid making them. (I donât mention names, because my purpose isnât to embarrass anybody. Iâll show you plenty of my own mistakes as well!)
Most important of all⊠as part of your training, Iâll show you how to turn your messy first draft into something that a client would love.
(4) You get EXPERT feedback, and motivation.
Did I mention the importance of feedback? I think I might have done!
But itâs not just about any old feedback. Iâve seen people post their copywriting drafts onto marketing forums and ask for feedback.
Sure, youâll get dozens of responses⊠but much of the âhelpfulâ advice youâll get will be contradictory, based on guesswork, from a mix of amateurs and experts. It can leave you confused,
and doubting your own abilities!
My feedback is based not only on 20 years of experience, but also on working with you on the copy right from the start â so we both have a good understanding of the product, the target audience, their hopes and fears⊠and so on.
This is something you canât get from a bunch of random people on an Internet forum.
(5) Iâll help you get clients.
Once you have the copywriting skills and practice, the next step is to get clients and start writing for money.
Iâll show you what to do, and what to say, to land clients and negotiate with them⊠and
Iâll
spill the beans on the secrets of the highest paid copywriters.
Hereâs A Sneak Peek At What Youâll Learn As You Train To Become A Highly Respected, Highly Paid Copywriter In The Months Ahead.
In Module 1, Iâll introduce you to perhaps the
most powerful copywriting and selling skill, that nobody talks about in those âclassicâ books. Master this ONE SKILL, and youâre already part of the way toward becoming a great copywriter.
The four âlevelsâ to why people buy. Features and benefits really just scratch the surface.
Discover
my unique âAgreement Point Systemâ to build agreement with the reader, so theyâre ready to say âYes!â by the end. Itâs not about silly gimmicks like tacking on âright?â at the end of a sentence. Itâs much, much deeper⊠and based on scientific insights into how people act.
Iâll give you a DOZEN different ways to begin a sales letter, so youâll never be stuck getting started.
My exclusive âUltimate Bullet Builderâ system shows you how to create bullet points that leave your readers practically LUSTING for your product.
Discover
my unique âWord Weaponryâ strategy, that enables you to implant ideas in peopleâs minds in an almost âcovertâ way. (NLP junkies⊠no, itâs nothing to do with âembedded commands.â) Warning: I will ONLY teach it to you if you promise to use it with care and compassion, because itâs like word dynamite!
⊠and much, much more.
So Whatâs The Price?
First, hereâs a quick question for you:
How much would it be worth to YOU, to become a great copywriter⊠writing powerful copy that makes you and your clients money?
Even a brand new copywriter can charge hundreds of dollars for a single sales letter, and top copywriters charge $5,000 or more⊠and even get paid royalties on the sales!
When you think about it, people spend $30,000 or more on so-called âhigherâ education, usually with no guarantee of a job at the end of it.
By contrast, you can learn copywriting in the comfort of your own home, at a fraction of the costâŠ
and you could be making money as a copywriter just months from now.
Coaching is very labor intensive. I guess thatâs why universities charge so much, and why some copywriters charge their outrageous mentoring fees.
But because Iâve streamlined the whole training and feedback process, I can price this Ultimate Copywriting membership program at a point where itâs an affordable and worthwhile investment.
Right now, itâs only $99 a month plus VAT or sales tax, for 12 months⊠which is really nothing compared to what you could be making shortly as a copywriter.
I plan to add many more tools to this membership program over time, so I donât intend to keep the price this low forever.
Whatâs moreâŠ
Try It Out Completely Risk-Free.
I know youâre going to love this Ultimate Copywriting program, and Iâm eager to start your training as soon as possible. After all, the sooner you start, the sooner you could be making money.
Thatâs why Iâm willing to offer you the following rock-solid guarantee:
Come and join us today. Read through the training modules. Watch the videos. Take advantage of the missions, and my feedback. If you donât think this membership program is for you, let me know by email or through the Helpdesk
within
the first 60 days, and Iâll happily give you 100% of your money back.
That means you get to try it out completely risk-free for the first 60 days!
Of course,
you can also cancel your membership at any time.
Please note: The only thing you canât do is use the Deep Critique service within the first 90 days, because it takes up a lot of my time to read through and critique drafts⊠so itâs only fair that I know youâre not signing up just to take advantage of these free critiques!
Now Is The Perfect Time To Take The Next Step.
Youâve read this far, which means youâre interested in becoming a copywriter, and you appreciate that copywriting can be a great way of making money.
You also recognize that books and DVD courses arenât going to give you the feedback and motivation you need, to MASTER the skill of writing copy.
My Ultimate Copywriting membership program is uniquely positioned to give you a massive advantage, compared with trying to become a copywriter by yourself, with a book.
It took me 20 years to discover all the insights Iâm about to share with you. Leverage my knowledge and experience, by taking advantage of this programâŠ
giving
you all the shortcuts to break into the world of copywriting in just a matter of months.
Of course, you canât become a great copywriter overnight. It takes some time and practice⊠but you can speed up the process with my help, feedback and encouragement.
In other words, the sooner you get started, the sooner you can be making money from your investment.
To qualify for this coaching, you only need to be able to write reasonably well in English, and have a determination to succeed.
Click on the order button below, and letâs continue this journey together.
Your
initial payment is $99 (plus
sales tax or VAT as applicable) for
the first 30 days of access, and then $99 (plus sales tax or VAT as applicable) per
month after that, for a total of 12 payments. You can cancel your membership at any time.
Once your payment
is complete, you can download Month 1âs content immediately. You will be sent log-in details to the Members Area by email, usually within 1-2 business days. If you have any problems, you can use the contact
form quoting your ClickBank order number.
Frequently Asked Questions
â âHow long does this program last?â
The program lasts for 12 months, but you can cancel your membership at any time.
Iâve designed it so you can have a solid, deep understanding of what I call the âCore Skills,â and plenty of practice, within about 6-9 months.
Iâve reserved more âadvancedâ techniques for after the first 6 months. In my original coaching program, I used to teach them earlier, but most students didnât apply them as effectively as they could, because they were also busy learning and practicing the Core Skills.
Thatâs why the âadvancedâ ideas now come later on. Master the Core Skills first, and then youâll be in a better position to master the Advanced skills.
â âDo I need any copywriting experience?â
No. The program assumes you have no prior experience of copywriting. All that is required is the ability to write reasonably well in English, and a determination to succeed.
â âHow does the coaching work?â
Each Training Module comes with a âMission,â an assignment that allows you to practice what youâve learned. You send the Mission to me via the Helpdesk in the membership area, and I aim to give feedback within 2-3 business days (i.e. Monday to Friday).
The same is true when it comes to writing practice sales letters using the Deep Critique service. You send me the drafts usually via the Helpdesk, or sometimes via email. I aim to respond within 2-4 business days for practice sales letters, and within 1-2 business days if itâs copy intended for an actual client.
â âWill you help me to get clients?â
Iâll show you what to do, and what to say, to land clients and negotiate with them, and to find higher paying clients. In future, I do intend to include services that can help you get clients directly. Â â âHow much money can I make?â
The simple answer is: I donât know. I donât make ANY income claims or promises, because much of it is in your hands. If you do nothing with what you learn, youâll earn ZERO.
At the other end of the spectrum, Iâve known copywriters who charge $10k for a single sales letter like the one youâve just read, and who also get a cut of the final sales, which can be quite substantial.
These figures arenât typical.Â
I can show you their secrets, and how they did it. I can give you the knowledge, tools and feedback, but I canât magically make you one of them. It all depends on what you DO with what you learn.
Also, thereâs no âstandardâ copywriting fee table, because what you charge is up to you.

Spring-Fall of 2019 // Current Energies: Intense Clearing
Spring-Fall of 2019 // Current Energies: Intense Clearing
By Mela Carreira
Hello everyone!
Itâs been a little while with much unfolding in my world, thus less blogging. I have spent a large part of this past month in particular putting together an intensive online astrology course covering the energies of 2020. I highly recommend checking this out if you are interested in understanding more about the energy of these times from the astrological perspective.
From my view, the year 2020 represents a breakthrough time, and so I felt called to dive deeply into it and share what has come to me / what I have been discovering about the energies as they approach. The course offers deep examination of this as well as a comprehensive look at historical and thematic components to the potent and rare Saturn-Pluto-Jupiter conjunction that will be highly active throughout 2020 (Think: Structures meeting major transformation in a BIG way!)
We are in a time where the consciousness of humanity is shifting rapidly and life is changing immensely for many people. This year, 2019, is a transitional year in which we are going through many preparatory processes to get ready for the shifts coming in 2020 & beyond.  In the course I elaborate on the layers & dynamics of the astrological components at play in 2020, as well as how the energies affect individuals on a personal level. In fact, I offer a whole version of the course that includes your natal chart, showing precisely how everything is aligning for you specifically and a highlighted handout breaking down what to expect and how to work with the energies đÂ
So if you feel called, please check it out! Itâs really jam packed with information and I guarantee you will come away with much to chew on regarding the flow of the next several years đ
OK! With all that said!
This month, we just passed through a major eclipse portal. The energy of these eclipses brought up much that is directly tied to the 2020 astrological alignments that are already starting to form in the skies. So I really wanted to make sure that I wrote a bit about whatâs happening for us RIGHT NOW, as it is extremely important on many levels to our process going forward.
Yes, the eclipses have passed already⊠however, the impact of the energy lately is profound, so I feel that what I have to share here will hold relevance long beyond this short window. Of course â that is the nature of eclipses, anyway! But the energy of this summer, in particular, is one of deep inner process â with long term implications.Â
So without further ado, here are my notes on the current energies.
Saturn on the South Node:Â Sitting in Discomfort, Stuckness and StagnationÂ
One of the primary patterns active throughout this summer is the conjunction of Saturn and the South Node. Saturn: the planet of karmic evolution, hard work, and mastery of lessons â and the South Node: our karmic past, bad habits, and lazy tendencies. Starting in April, the South Node crossed over both Saturn & Pluto, triggering the karmic process around & preparation for the upcoming Saturn-Pluto conjunction in January 2020. In essence, April signaled something significant for us about the incoming transformations â and at this time we were granted some special insight â a way forward. And then, very quickly, because it was malefic planets and the South Node â in came the WORK. The heavy, unpleasant work.
Ordinarily, a transit of the node to a planet is a fairly brief meeting. Significant, but fleeting. However, this April, it just so happened that just as the South Node and Saturn went into alignment, Saturn turned retrograde and the two have been traveling together ever since (the lunar nodes always move in retrograde motion) â and this journey continues until October.  That is a very, very long time for Saturn to be working with the South Node. An arduous 7 months of standstill and intense clearing.
The way that I see and feel it â this alignment is so powerful that the sum total of all other astrological unfoldings this summer go right back to this joining of Saturn and the South Node, including the eclipses. So most everything I will be discussing from here on out will be working from this perspective.
OK â so what does this mean for us in real time?
The basic way this energy feels to me is a prolonged ennui. A sense that everything is stuck and nothing is moving. We are feeling all of the problems and the mounting weight of the work involved with getting out from under them.  In some levels, the problems might even feel a bit irrational â like the burdens and weights upon us are entirely invisible, with no discernible or simple cause â and the emotions connected to these weights disparate and a bit random. The most mysterious array of feelings arise â about where we are, where we are going, and especially: What is the point of it all?Â
The most recent eclipse portal merely amplified the conundrum. Almost as if the eclipse energyâs purpose was to turn up the volume so loud that our frustrations, questions and misgivings, inner conflicts, weaknesses and shortages could become undeniably present. Yet what is most difficult of all is that none of the problems have easy solutions. Sure, there is the solution we always fall back on (the South Node) and escape to⊠but we know, somehow, that this is not the real answer or the direction of forward progress. Not this time, and not ever. And it is hard to face that even with the most positive expansions and growth in our lives at this moment â we donât get to coast through. Because right now, whatever it is, itâs all important, and it all matters.
This is a time of reckoning. Of reviewing. And it is also a time of deep integration and digestion. We feel, acutely, the consequences of our past choices, positive and negative. And we sense the importance of setting up the next phase with as much wisdom as we can gather. What is really true? And how many layers down do we have to pass through within ourselves to arrive at the core of what our lives are supposed to be? Sorting through all of the desires, all of the influences from society, the internet, our friends, our family, our partners. From where have we been making our choices? For whom? And can we accept responsibility for our failures & mistakes â learn, and move on?
There are a few important components that I see in moving through this timeâŠÂ The first and most important is PRESENCE.
Do not run from discomfort. Discomfort is a sign of change. Change in this case is many things â and facing the reality of oneself and oneâs life is the first of those things. Change is not accomplished through denial but through acknowledgement and acceptance of reality. After this, change can become other things â such as transmutation/digestion of the old, creative solutions to the problem, simplification, action, or release. All of this calls for presence with what is, and an ideally observational acceptance for all that arises.
The next important component is STOP CONTROLLING EVERYTHING. Exertion might be required, but control interferes and causes resistance. The best way to deal with the need to control is to just to stop and be still. Wait to pick up the current, and when in the current, surrender. Control is exhausting and wasteful. Move with consciousness, not forcefulness.
The last piece is always going back to WHATâS IMPORTANT LONG TERM. What do you really want out of your life in the long view and how do your current choices reflect or reject that? What contrary feelings come up and where are they rooted from?
This is a very intense time but itâs for good reason. Starting in 2020 weâre going to be hurtled full throttle into very powerful changes. Whatâs wonderful about this time and this energy is that we have the cosmic opportunity to really feel it all out beforehand. The good, the bad and the ugly. And to move through some major layers of self which might be getting in the way of where weâre going. The iron boots feeling of Saturn on the South Node just helps us sit still and stop getting so distracted. Like⊠weâre here, we might as well make the most of it.
It can feel like nothingâs happening at all (deafening silence), or that everythingâs the worst drudgery⊠but in fact, a lot is happening. Itâs just taking the form of internal processing, deep feeling, and a lot of work.
  Intense Ancestral Clearing
What we are going through is essentially an intense, ongoing, energetic clearing. It feels harsh at times because the karmic stuff coming up is really deep and old, and for many of us itâs ancestral. This is the stuff that lives deep in the bones and in the DNA. Our physical and ego structures are developed from these ancestral imprints â and deep within all of us are impulses that are so subconscious and internalized that we barely even know they exist until they crop up in times like these.
Whatâs interesting about this, to me, is that there are certain family lineage patterns that we can observe easily (e.g. a history of addiction in a family), and yet there are others which we are completely unaware of until we experience them (e.g. the patterns of behavior in a relationship with partner or children) â in either case, even if we are aware of these patterns they are still quite difficult to root out and extinguish.
Many choices we make in our life, without us even knowing it, are driven by the family imprint, and in this moment there is a more pronounced sense of awareness around this. Are we following that imprint or are we departing from it? And to what degree are we consciously choosing? What is the distinction between autonomy and rebellion? Between following tradition and falling into the same old trap?
Likewise there is a deep sense of longing for home â what home is to us? What is the difference between our longings, desires and impulses that come from a desire for familiarity (DNA) and the callings of our spirit? Are they one in the same for us â or distinct?
This feeling of searching for home and understanding our origins in communion with whatâs true to our spirit and how to truly LIVE that, is really strong under this energy. How can we be sure weâre not just playing the same old tapes in disguise? And again, there is no clear answer, just a process. Where the process is leading us, it seems to me, is into a deeper recognition of who we are, and a more easeful state of self acceptance, as well as a potentially healing time for family issues within oneself and between family members.
The work is heartfelt and deep. There is a sense of coming together and back to basics with the North Node in Cancer.
The Power of Subtle Influence (Yin / Feminine Approaches on the Rise)
The final bit that I want to discuss is the increased potency, awareness, and implementation of yin (soft) methods to accomplish change in life, self and the world.
What this means to me, simply, is the reformation of oneself, oneâs life, and perhaps eventually oneâs community and the world, through influence, example, and direct relationship â rather than domination.
It is clear to me that no true change is realized without individuals coming to resolve their own inner conflicts for themselves. I feel many people in the world are doing this work already â and I trust that reality will eventually shift with the increased cultural focus towards dealing with the internal contradictions and fallacies that dominate our world views (no matter who we are). That said, I do not necessarily believe this means changes in our outer worlds (e.g. greater society level) will be discernible as quickly as many wish for. However, I believe that over a larger arc of time, it is already unfolding and that we are heading into a more positive age for humanity. The strength of feminine energy (and women), and yin approaches to problem solving (not gender specific), is a key component to this process.
Ever since Uranus crossed into Taurus in 2018, I have felt that we will see more women stepping forward to offer their ideas to the collective. So far, I have observed this to be true and what is reflected to me about the feminine leadership that has appeared, is that it is in the feminine approach that something refreshing and inventive is brought to the collective. The power is in how women connect with others, and also the unique ways in which women approach subject matter â bringing out dimensions previously unconsidered. I believe that over the course of the next decade we will see many women bringing new approaches and ideas to previously male dominated areas of society and that this will cause a positive shift in the way larger structures & systems serve the world.Â
On a more basic level, soft approaches are more favored now. Encouraging connection and integration, in whatever way that shows up (within the body, within the spirit, within society) is extremely powerful, and needed now more than ever. I feel hopeful that the true power of feminine energy is becoming more present, accepted and embraced by society as a whole and that the yin approaches of yielding, listening, integrating & digesting will be incorporated more and more into our daily lives, health practices, and discourse in general.

How to build your creative confidence | David Kelley

How to build your creative confidence | David Kelley
Translator: Timothy Covell Reviewer: Morton Bast I desired to speak to you at present about inventive self belief. Iâm going to method back in the 0.33 grade at Oakdale tuition in Barberton, Ohio. I recall someday my exceptional buddy Brian was working on a assignment. He used to be making a horse out of the clay our teacher saved underneath the sink. And at one point, one of the most women that was once sitting at his desk, seeing what he used to be doing, leaned over and mentioned to him, "thatâs horrible. That doesnât look anything like a horse." And Brianâs shoulders sank. And he wadded up the clay horse and he threw it back within the bin. I not ever noticed Brian do a venture like that ever again. And i ponder how in most cases that happens, you recognize? It looks as if when I tell that story of Brian to my category, a number of them want to come up after type and inform me about their equivalent expertise, how a trainer shut them down, or how a scholar was above all cruel to them. And then some style of opt out of considering of themselves as creative at that point. And that i see that opting out that happens in childhood, and it moves in and becomes extra ingrained, even, by the time you get to adult lifestyles. So we see quite a lot of this. When now we have a workshop or when now we have consumers in to work with us side by using part, eventually we get to the point within the method thatâs sort of fuzzy or unconventional. And finally, these giant-shot executives whip out their BlackBerrys and they say they must make fairly important phone calls, and they head for the exits. And theyâre just so uncomfortable. When we monitor them down and ask them whatâs going on, they are saying anything like, "i am simply now not the inventive form." but we know that is now not proper. If they stick with the system, in the event that they stick with it, they become doing amazing matters. And they shock themselves at simply how innovative they and their groups particularly are. So iâve been looking at this worry of judgment that weâve got, that you do not do things, you are afraid youâre going to be judged; if you donât say the correct ingenious factor, youâre going to be judged. And that i had a fundamental breakthrough, when I met the psychologist Albert Bandura. I do not know if Albert Bandura, however in the event you go to Wikipedia, it says that heâs the fourth most important psychologist in history â you understand, like Freud, Skinner, someone and Bandura. (Laughter) Bandura is 86 and he nonetheless works at Stanford. And heâs only a beautiful man. So I went to look him, considering heâs simply labored on phobias for a long time, which i am very occupied with.He had developed this manner, this, type of, methodology, that ended up curing men and women in an extraordinarily brief period of time, like, in 4 hours. He had a tremendous healing rate of men and women who had phobias. And we talked about snakes â I do not know why â we pointed out snakes and worry of snakes as a phobia. And it was quite enjoyable, fairly fascinating. He instructed me that heâd invite the test discipline in, and heâd say, "you already know, thereâs a snake in the next room and weâre going to go in there." To which, he mentioned, most of them answered, "Hell no! Iâm no longer entering into there, most likely if there is a snake in there." but Bandura has a step-by means of-step method that used to be super victorious. So heâd take humans to this two-approach replicate watching into the room the place the snake was. And heâd get them comfy with that. Then by way of a sequence of steps, heâd move them they usuallyâd be standing in the doorway with the door open, and theyâd be looking in there. And heâd get them at ease with that. And then many more steps later, little one steps, theyâd be within the room, theyâd have a leather glove like a welderâs glove on, and so theyâd finally touch the snake. And after they touched the snake, the whole lot was great. They have been cured. Correctly, the whole thing used to be higher than satisfactory. These men and women who had lifelong fears of snakes have been saying things like, "look how wonderful that snake is." and so they had been holding it in their laps. Bandura calls this approach "guided mastery." i like that time period: guided mastery. And something else happened. These persons who went through the method and touched the snake ended up having much less anxiousness about different things of their lives. They tried harder, they persevered longer, they usually were more resilient within the face of failure. They only won a brand new self assurance. And Bandura calls that confidence "self-efficacy," the feel that you could alternate the world and that you could acquire what you set out to do.Well, meeting Bandura was once quite cathartic for me, given that i noticed that this noted scientist had documented and scientifically validated some thing that we have seen occur for the last 30 years: that we could take persons who had the worry that they werenât ingenious, and we would take them by means of a sequence of steps, kind of like a sequence of small successes, and they turn worry into familiarity. And they shock themselves. That transformation is strong. We see it on the d.Tuition always. Persons from all exclusive forms of disciplines, they suppose of themselves as handiest analytical. And they are available in and they go through the procedure, our process, they construct self assurance and now they consider of themselves differently. They usuallyâre thoroughly emotionally serious about the truth that they walk around considering of themselves as a inventive character. So I suggestion probably the most matters iâd do today is take you via and exhibit you what this trip appears like. To me, that ride looks like Doug Dietz. Doug Dietz is a technical person. He designs giant medical imaging gear. He is worked for GE, and he is had a extremely good career. However at one factor, he had a moment of predicament. He used to be within the health facility watching at one of his MRI machines in use, when he noticed a young family, and this little woman. And that little lady was crying and was terrified. And Doug was relatively dissatisfied to study that nearly eighty percentage of the pediatric patients in this sanatorium had to be sedated in an effort to maintain his MRI desktop. And this was once really disappointing to Doug, due to the fact that earlier than this time, he was pleased with what he did. He was saving lives with this laptop. However it fairly hurt him to look the worry that this machine induced in children. About that time, he used to be on the d.Tuition at Stanford taking courses. He was once learning about our procedure, about design considering, about empathy, about iterative prototyping. And he would take this new competencies and do some thing rather distinctive. He would redesign the whole experience of being scanned. And that is what he came up with.(Laughter) He became it into an journey for the youngsters. He painted the partitions and he painted the computing device, and he received the operators retrained via people who understand children, like kidâs museum humans. And now when the child comes, itâs an experience. They usually talk to them concerning the noise and the movement of the ship. And after they come, they are saying, "adequate, you are going to enter the pirate ship, but be very nonetheless, for the reason that we do not need the pirates to find you." And the results had been super dramatic: from whatever like eighty percent of the kids desiring to be sedated, to something like 10 percentage of the youngsters desiring to be sedated. And the medical institution and GE were completely satisfied, too, because you did not ought to call the anesthesiologist at all times, and so they might put more children by way of the computer in a day. So the quantitative results have been first-class. However Dougâs outcome that he cared about have been far more qualitative. He used to be with some of the mothers waiting for her little one to come out of the scan. And when the little girl got here out of her scan, she ran up to her mother and said, "Mommy, can we come back tomorrow?" (Laughter) And so, Iâve heard Doug inform the story typically of his individual transformation and the breakthrough design that happened from it, however Iâve on no account really seen him inform the story of the little woman with out a tear in his eye. Dougâs story takes situation in a health center.I do know a factor or two about hospitals. A couple of years in the past, I felt a lump on the side of my neck. It was my flip within the MRI computing device. It used to be melanoma, it used to be the dangerous form. I was once advised I had a 40 percent hazard of survival. So even as you are sitting around with the opposite sufferers, on your pajamas, and everyoneâs pale and skinny â (Laughter) you know? â and you are waiting in your flip to get the gamma rays, you feel of quite a few matters.Ordinarily, you think about: Am I going to outlive? And i notion lots about: What used to be my daughterâs existence going to be like without me? But you feel about other matters. I notion lots about: What was I put on the planet to do? What was once my calling? What will have to I do? I used to be fortunate seeing that I had lots of choices. We might been working in well being and wellness, and k-12, and the establishing world. So there were plenty of projects that I could work on. However then I made up our minds and dedicated at this factor, to the thing I most desired to do, which used to be to help as many folks as possible regain the inventive self belief they misplaced along their approach. And if I was once going to survive, that is what I desired to do. I survived, simply so you know. (Laughter) (Applause) I particularly feel that when folks acquire this self assurance â and we see it all the time at the d.College and at IDEO â that they truly start engaged on the things which can be relatively important in their lives. We see persons quit what they may be doing and go in new recommendations. We see them come up with extra interesting â and simply more â recommendations, so they are able to choose from higher recommendations. And so they just make better decisions. I do know at TED, youâre speculated to have a transformation-the-world style of factor, isnât that â everybody has a metamorphosis-the-world thing? If there is one for me, that is it, to support this occur. So i am hoping you can become a member of me on my quest, you as, sort of, notion leaders. It will be really best when you failed to let humans divide the arena into the creatives and the non-creatives, adore itâs some God-given factor, and to have individuals have an understanding of that they are naturally inventive, and that those normal individuals must let their suggestions fly; that they should achieve what Bandura calls self-efficacy, that you can do what you got down to do, and you can attain a position of inventive self assurance and contact the snake.Thanks. (Applause) .
