Daydreaming

The title is the verb daydreaming, although the song only ever uses it as a noun. To me that sums up the desire for a fleeting moment to last, feeling like once Harry reaches a feeling it is already gone because he is in constant motion.

Love on Tour Opener

Daydreaming opened Love on Tour after HH's release. It is the perfect song for that, happy, light, upbeat with a fast tempo to dispel some of the crowds anxious energy to see Harry. He bounced out triumphantly to it too, it's such a fun moment. The screens showed Harry's house on a journey through London, Paris and New York:

He used parts of an Alan Watts 1969 lecture 'Out of Your Mind' here. That piece delved into perception of reality. The part Harry chose is saying that we are not seperate entities but rather interconnected in the universe. So many songs on HH are about the theme of connectedness and also perception vs reality, this song included. As the tour opener I take this part as a message to his audience that Love on Tour was about coming together, shared joy. Harry used part of his final show speech in Love on Tour, Forever and said 'none of you are alone, I feel what it that you create together.

When was it written / who worked on it

Daydreaming is from the first group of songs for the Harry's House sessions, before he went to UK, before he joined the DWD cast. Harry said at the ONO in NYC: "Tyler first sent me a voice note when I was driving from Palm Springs to LA & since that point, I think it was called 'idea on the 101 rough'. It's no longer called that, thank God, but I haven't stopped singing it since".

It and Satellite are the only songs recorded in The Cave Studios, Tylers Nashville home only now do I realise Satellite’s recording there could be Tylers contribution done remote

It is another song that Pino Palladino played Bass on and John Mayer played guitar. As I have in detail in the post about them in Cinema. Harry told Howard Stern that he was across the corridor from JM and spoke about Daydreaming and Cinema together:

Ivan Jackson, of Brasstracks, also plays on MFASR from this same first set of songs as well as Watermelon Sugar and lights up on fine line.

Cole Kamen-Green of The Superpower Horns. He is in demand and also played horns on Taylor’s re-records, they met through Jack.

Daydreaming samples "Ain't We Funkin' Now." from 1978 so includes co-writing credits for Louis Johnson, Valerie Johnson, Alex Weir, Quincy Jones and Tom Bahler accordingly.

Daydream and dreams are in several of Harry's songs and daydream is also in Boyfriends on this album. In both songs it means lying to yourself, or rather ignoring that something is fleeting because you want it to last, a theme on Harry's House.

'Paid me' is a theme in Harry's songs, and a Haylor theme also. Here it means that it's transactional, she wants all of Harry now because he is leaving and will be gone for so long. This line conjures up for me leaving to go on tour, which is the same premise as One Directions Back for You which Harry wrote on, though Daydreaming is more mature and jaded. It could equally be parting to go back to England in the Pandemic.

Real is so interesting for Harry, in other songs (other than 'Something I've been waiting for) love has not been real, like in Two Ghosts "Tastes so sweet, looks so real" and Fool's Gold - "Yeah I know your love's not real" here he is staying longer than he should because the love is real, but if that is the case why should he leave sooner and the song's premise is that he knows it's a fleeting daydream.

"it just feels right" reminds me of Cinema's 'Don't know why, but it feels so right to me" but also Back for You which the setting of this song (in my mind) is the same as Back for You, Harry is leaving a love to go on tour.

"Give me something to dream about" reminds me of Perfect's "If you like to do whatever you've been dreaming about" - but a reverse.

Harry sings about 'Alright' a lot, like an anxiety bubbling up, he never sounds sure it will be even when he says it is. Here it's almost like he is saying it's OK that it's a daydream, that he knows it is fleeting and that is OK.

The outtro is repeating 'Living in a daydream' the whole song is one last night with someone before time apart, accepting you will part and pretending it is real and forever when he knows it is not.

Did I Make You Up? - half alive - #4

This is my favourite song and favourite music video of ALL time. Literally. Aiden did such an incredible job at directing and choreographing the music video, and I could go on for ages about the symbolism (ask me!). It's amazing. The song itself is in the same vein, and my only criticism is that it's just too short. If someone were to isolate the leading piano melody that intermingles with the chorus, I'd be listening to that forever. One of my top 3 songs of all time. Loverboy - Jackson Lundy - #72

I've been a fan of Brasstracks for like 3 years, so when this was fed to me by the almighty algorithm, my brain ate the trumpet and recognised it as succinctly as the recipe of my mum's soup. It's got an addictive riff, and Jackson's voice is always such a treat, it's smooth and comforting, almost like chocolate! Give it a go if you've never listened to it. Ah. The ever-present animation fan in me has struck again, this time in the way of Adventure Time. This song is just great. Nothing else to it. Just a nice song about time changing. That's all. Nothing else. Don't watch the show. :)
