Traffic Character Analysis - BigB

BigB blends into the shadows in any conflict, fading into the background of the minds of others. You can’t be someone’s enemy if they forget you’re there. When he is in a fight however, he can easily talk his way out of it, get people to feel guilty and leave him be. He’s a survivor, only getting blood on his hands when absolutely necessary. This however, doesn’t mean he is peaceful. He plays the game from the shadows, planting seeds and watching others burn the world down around him. He lets everyone else fight and then takes advantage of the moments when the dust is still settling. BigB is calculated that way, but it doesn’t mean he can’t dig his own emotional grave. If you play every side, people are sure to get hurt eventually, and in moments like that he can only blame himself. That’s why he tries to be more detached, what happens to people he doesn't care about doesn’t matter. Still, he finds himself caring, maybe a bit too much.

Having read through all the posts of the dl kids, I just love how all of them have these really complex and complicated relationships with their parents, while Johnny is just "My dads love me and I love them!"

Jassy: I always put one of my dads on a pedestal to an almost unhealthy degree, while I struggle to even somewhat connect to the other one

Liana & Gertrude: I used to have a good relationship with both my dads, until one of them was unfaithful and now I can never look at him the same way again

Wes: My dad treated me more as a way to one up other people than as his actual child

Jekiv: While my mom is great, my dad walked out on us and I barely ever saw him

Novo: Growing up I loved my mom and loathed my dad, but looking back now I realize that to them I was just a tool to spite the other

Johnny: Last week mah pa took meh to the rodeo fo-wah the first time, 'n he even lem-me ride one of the bulls! This week mah other dad is takin' meh to herd ravagers. Gosh, aah love 'em both so much!

Goodness this is like the third episode in a row begetting discourse among the cr fandom. For me this discourse has two perspectives where the division depends on whose perspective you're looking at;

For the armies it was 'We've been sent by the gods and are here to help you stop Predathos as we pla-wait, you're a vessel of Predathos? Isn't that just like Ludinus planned??' which yeah is valid from their perspective

For the Hells it was 'We just came out of 4 back-to-back battles with Ludinus and Predathos itself, we have a solution to save the gods but change the dynamic but we want to discuss it privately with the gods first and now you're trying to kill us!?' which is also valid

What puts me more on BH's side is that we have the context; BH are allowed to be terse when people try to kill them and fail, least of all allies who don't ask for an explanation before asking their god to come down and smite them. They're not villains because they snarked at the person who attempted to sic their god on them, and it's not as if Imogen sic'd Predathos on them in retaliation. Once again they are met with the thankless job and burden that they neither wanted or asked for, but was thrust upon them anyway. With all the times Bells Hells have been criticized for being aimless and indecisive it seems a little strange to criticize them now for being focused and decisive.

Could they have explained from the start? Maybe. Would it have caused a different reaction the moment they said Predathos is in Imogen? Probably not. I can't tell you why they didn't come out of the Cage and immediately explain because I'm not the players; perhaps they wanted to avoid the hysteria and conflict, perhaps they were drained from the fight and wanted to wrap up the episode, or perhaps it was just down to Bell's Hells, as with all CR campaign parties, being infamously bad at communicating, I don't know.

But it's times like these where it's worth reminding that this is a DnD show, nerdy-ass voice actors having fun, it can't always be clean and clear-cut storytelling every second. And sometimes as a fandom we need to take a step back so we don't get ourselves stuck, because we're probably making it deeper than it is and getting annoyed at each other over our interpretation of two groups from the same side getting annoyed at each other. Just, take a breath.

I've said this before, but one of the funniest things that happened on Double Life has gotta be BigB informing Ren that he's been gone so long, their child has grown an arm in his absence and even said its first word ("Ren")... and Ren following this by proudly telling his partner that he's joined a singles support group.

BigB's response is "Oh, that's- That's awesome, dude... Y'know, I thought you were going to leave me for Martyn."

BigB thinks Ren is cheating on him, which is WHY he sneaks out to give Grian cookies and accept him as a secret admirer.

And Ren's alibi? Oh, it's less of a singles support group and more of a cult for the demon he blames for killing them both and that he's now dedicating himself to demon worship.

And BigB's response to hearing this is that they should go find Scott and get couple's therapy.

That's what's so funny, actually- They don't even go to therapy because BigB met with his secret admirer. Ren FLIPS post-therapy session when he finds out BigB met up with the mystery person, but he didn't know until after.

No. BigB wanted couple's therapy because his partner failed to be home to see their baby say his first word and the reason Ren wasn't home is because he was out worshipping the demon who killed him without telling BigB where he was. And supposedly it's a singles support group. While they're living together and raising a child.

Box Boys drama is so off the wall, for real, for real.

Traffic Character Analysis - Ren

Ren is a natural leader, but he doesn’t want to be. He craves the power, but hates the responsibility. But he can’t have one without the other, so he tried to find work arounds, giving the responsibility to a close ally, being in charge of something most people don’t even know exists, pledging himself to some other leader, but it isn't enough, it isn't the same. So he deals with it, trying to make decisions that help those he cares about. Ren cares fiercely, and he takes loyalty incredibly seriously. Betrayal is a cardinal sin. If he is willing to lay his life down for someone, he expects the same of them. He puts his cards out on the table, doesn't hide his intentions, does not give people a reason to leave. They know what they are getting into, so they have no excuse. Ren trusts completely, and it is not hard to earn it. He is a sucker for the dramatic, he needs to make a statement, he needs to make his actions known. He needs the glory. Ren is insecure, he is afraid that if he doesn’t make some sort of big spectacle, what he works so hard to achieve will be for nothing. That is unacceptable in his eyes. So he puts on a show, makes himself into whoever everyone else wants him to be, who he thinks he needs to be. It has gotten to the point where he doesn’t really know who the real Ren is anymore, he has played so many characters he doesn’t know which one is real. So he keeps pushing, keeps doing the next big thing, keeps being the next big thing, because that’s all he knows. As long as those he cares about care about him, as long as his name never stops floating on the breeze, as long as those around him trust him as deeply as he trusts them, that’s all that matters.

Someone asked who of the kids are most likely to go bad in the wake of Jimmy-boys villain arc, and 5/7 of em could very much go bad if they tried, and I gave all of them reasons as to why and how they would be evil

So here’s the evil guys

Also all of these exist in separate universes from each other, we don’t have five supervillains running amok at the same time lol

Watcher Liana

Liana has the watcher gene who most commonly in the fandom is depicted as not very nice guys, plus the hurt and betrayal of her dads would leave her impressionable to their words

Power: Clairvoyance, pupeteering, mind control, space warping

Status of the world: Hermitcraft, Empires, and the death servers have all been combined through a multitude of rifts. Hardcore rules, and some people are under her influence and out for blood

Weakness: Can be subdued if wearing the blindfold

Victims: Grian, BigB, Jimmy, Pearl, Martyn, Gertrude

Danger level: Severe

Wes of the under

Wes would be a villain who like, wouldn’t see himself as bad. Wes is a protector, and he’s also naturally anxious and fearful, so he’d do anything to protect the people he loves, even if it means hurting others.

Powers: Durability, Teleportation, Invisibility, Fire Immunity, Imp scouts

Status of the world: People avoid going underground and entering caves like the plague. The underground is a complicated tunnel system, a maze to anyone that isn’t apart of the imp hive mind. All of the kids, and some hermits and emperors, are missing

Weakness: Doesn’t kill, and will do anything to stop himself from doing so

Victims: None

Danger level: Medium, can be reasoned with

Princess Gertrude

Gertrude has also been hurt deeply, by both of her dads. She’d want control over her own life, and the best way to do that is to take ultimate control. Her dad has gone evil king twice, and she is a fairytale fanatic. What’s stopping her from going evil princess?

Power: Werewolf transformation, wolf army, influence over many powerful hermits, redstone skills

Status of the world: A dystopia with her at the top. Taxes are high, as is the threat of death. She has access to both X’s and fWhip’s admin controls, so she rules the world with her iron paw, and is quick to crush any rebellion

Weakness: Silver coated arrows

Victims: Grian, Xisuma, fWhip, Scar, Impulse, Pearl, Gem, Mumbo, Beef, Wels, Iskall, Katherine, Pixl, Joel, Liana, Wes

Danger level: Medium of alone. Very high if with her wolf army, or in her werewolf form

Jekiv the undead

Jekiv is a literal necromancer zombie without a soul, and little care for most people, with heavy daddy issues. The only thing actually keeping him from going villain is that Cleo raised him well

Powers: Full control of an undead army, dark magic, able to dismember and reattach his limbs

Status of the world: Zombie apocalypse dystopia. Zombies and Skeletons are immune to the sunlight, so they roam the overworld killing anything and all that they can. Most people have moved into isolated bunkers.

Weakness: Physically vulnerable. Able to be overpowered if you get his scythe away from him

Victims: Every other witch, including Shubble

Danger level: High

Novo, lord of ice

Novo is a Jinx. He’s already dealing with a lot of mental damage, so all it would take was something to make him snap and he’d loose it entirely, hurting people without even realizing it.

Powers: Freezing Water, freezing objects, creating Ice and Snow from nothing, giving life to snow and or ice, telekinetic manipulation of frozen water, creating an eternal winter

Status of the world: A frozen wasteland stuck in an eternal winter. Polar bears and strays roam freely, attacking on sight. People stay in underground grottos and homes, trying to preserve any warmth they can.

Weakness: Fire

Victims: Gertrude, Liana, Doc, Jevin, Xb, Cleo, Cub, Wels, Gem, Sausage, Katherine

Danger level: High, might accidentally kill you

Minor notes: The thing that made Novo snap was accidentally Killing Gertrude, a la Elsa style. His cloak, the only thing that’s not completely frozen, was hers. Jekiv and Gertrude are villains less because of something that happened, and more of they were raised differently. Liana is because of manipulation by the watchers, and idk with Wes.

Also shout out to Jassy and Johnny, who not only avoided going bad, but also remained alive in all five realities. Gg

Something I think is cute is that - y’know how Raph’s eyes are more on the yellow side?

Well, you know who also has slightly yellowed eyes? Donnie.

While Raph’s are more yellow, I think it’s cute that this is something that they share and I don’t see it pointed out too often?

It’s also something they both share with Draxum and Splinter’s current form (though again, these two have much more yellow sclera than the boys do.)

But yeah, I like that there’s this little detail that ties Raph and Donnie together, even if it’s small.
