Bowser Junior Is Bowser's Only Son
So a fact people don't realize is that Bowser Junior is intended to be Bowser's only son. This would also include any adopted sons because you are still someone's son if you are adopted. Nintendo makes it clear Junior is Bowser's only some, and never says blood related son.
We see it in Minion Quest. "King Bowser's only son." We see it in Bowser Junior's Journey "Lord Bowser's only son." And it is established in Bowser Jr.'s description on the Official Nintendo Website. "The only son of Bowser, the King of the Koopas."
This makes sense because the Koopalings are not Bowser's children or even related.

For tonight's Super Mario Spikers breakdown, I'll be covering some sidekicks. I already did Hammer Bros. and their related species a few weeks ago, and now I'll be doing a more general "recurring enemies" breakdown, featuring Goomba, Koopa, Piranha Plant, and Spiny!
If I had very little to say about Daisy last time, I have basically nothing on Koopa and Goomba. Goomba wears a hard helmet to protect himself from any brown boots trying to stomp him, while Koopa is just wearing a jersey and a shell matching his team's color. Their attacks do have some inspiration, Headbonk being based on how Goombas attack in the Paper Mario series, and Shell Slam being named after Koops' move in The Thousand-Year Door, but other than that... yeah I got nothing. This project was inevitably going to have some simpler characters, but I don't think that's a bad thing. Like I said with Bowser, I don't think everyone needs to be jam packed with reference material. Some characters work just as fine on their own.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In comparison I have more to say about the other two. Piranha Plant, obviously, drive around in the Piranha Pipes from Mario Kart: Double Dash. This actually has precedent, as Piranha Plants used them in the Piranha Panic minigame in Mario Super Sluggers! Well, they're not technically called the Piranha Pipes in this game, but those are Piranha Pipes if I ever did see one!
Tumblr media
Considering this was made after Smash Ultimate, it probably would have made more sense to have them hop around in pots... but the kart just seemed more fun. Their attack doesn't have a direct reference, just being loosely based on how jumping into their wide open jaws is not a good idea. Overall I think Piranha Plant came out pretty good!
Of these characters, Spiny probably has the most originality going for it design-wise. They often have shells made of spikes, but they seem to have foregone those for smooth ones. That's what one would think anyway. Get close to one, and you'll turn into a shish-kebab when one of its retractable spikes skewers you! This isn't really a direct reference to anything. As of writing I remembered there WAS a Spike Top variant in Super Princess Peach that makes its spike taller, but that didn't cross my mind drawing this. The Thorny Fortress attack, however, is based on something, and not from within the Mario series. It was based on Needle Kirby!
Tumblr media
One of my friends pointed out how it makes sense for Spinies to be defensive powerhouses, and I think that perfectly describes their role!
Not a ton of things to talk about this time, but that's generally gonna be the case with sidekicks. On the bright side, doing multiple at once means I don't have to make as many of these if I ever intend to catch up with the current roster! Instead of doing 150 I only have to do like, 100. Still a lot, but better than nothing.

NO WAAAAAY I JUST FOUND OUT YOU WROTE WALLFLOWER
I enjoyed Bowser’s Minions WAY too much bless you for the content 🙏
Ahhh thank you so much!!! It really means a lot to me that people still remember my little fanfic... It feels like there were like twelve people out there who gave Minion Quest a fair shot; I know the hands-off gameplay may not be for everyone but the writing is SO charming and good! So it always makes me happy to find anyone else out there who appreciates it. All the Captains and especially Captain Goomba are still so important to me :)

okay so the whole "minion quest" part of the m&l superstar saga remake has plenty of… questionable game design, to put it kindly, but perhaps the most baffling decision they made with it is creating a "behind the scenes" story that blatantly contradicts the main game

Goombas Don't Die When Stomped On
In spite of what people think, Goombas don't actually die when Mario, Luigi, or anyone else stomps on them. There is a lot of material stating and showing this to not be the case.
In Mario Party DS has the following description for Goombas. "This brown foe has taken his lumps over the years from from Mario's boot. But he seems to harbor secret dreams of turning the tables one day." In Mario Party 9 the Ground Soldier Constellation is stated to be "inspired by the Stalwart mushroom monsters who never give up, no matter how many times they are squashed." Both examples show how Goombas can be squashed multiple times and still keep going. In Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga there are some escaped Goombas which Mario and Luigi are asked to help capture. The Goombas are stomped on multiple times in the fight yet in the end are alright, they are just defeated. In addition in Minion Quest: The Search for Bowser it's revealed one of these Goombas is Captain Goomba, and he mentions how he is can't believe he got stomped again, meaning this has happened several times. Captain Goomba: "*sigh* I can't believe I got stomped on again." This affirms this happens multiple times. Later Wendy O Koopa actually brings up how Goombas always get stomped on repeatedly as well, and even Prince Peasely says it. Wendy: "You normally just pop out of the ground and get stomped right?" Peasely: "Indeed! Goombas are famously the first ones Mario always stomps!" It's actually pretty questionable about how while Bowser treats his minions pretty well, why exactly is he storing Goombas in barrels? More on Bowser's bizarre treatment of the Goombas, in Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story Bowser sets Goombas on fire in his move Goomba Storm. The reason I bring this up is not only can Goombas survive being squashed, but they can also be set on fire. Continuing on in Paper Mario: Color Splash a Goomba talks about how they are tired of being stomped on, implying they have been stomped on multiple times before. Goomba: "I am a bit tired of being stomped." Finally in an ad for the Mario Movie Captain Toad squashes a Goomba with his frying pan, but even after being squashed the Goombas keeps moving.
Someone might point to the Super Mario Bros. manual an say that it says Goombas die when stomped on. However, this is best seen as language to get across the game mechanics. But if literal then it would have been retconned since then.
So Goombas don't die when being stomped on. Also, I would like to note this claim that Goombas die when stomped on is often used by people to depict Mario as evil. However, nobody ever applies this to Luigi, Peach, Blue Toad, Yellow Toad, Toadette, Yoshi, Daisy, Nabbit, and even Bowser.

BOWSERS MINIONS AND BOWSER JR'S JOURNEY ARE ACTUALLY GOOD!?
NOBODY TOLD ME!?
Ever since these remakes came out I've always heard "oh the stories are good but the gameplay is bad" these are genuinely really fun RTS games with a fair amount of depth
I'm playing through Bowsers minions right now and it's a blast! You play as a lowly Goomba and you have to fight to stop your fellow minions, including the koopalings from being brainwashed by fawful.
You have to pick out a formation of 8, and it runs on a weakness triangle. These 3 types, melee (like Goombas and Bob ombs) Flying (like Paragoombas and Lakitus) and ranged (like Hammer Bros and Shy guys, who throw Turnips)
The game is really fun! I feel like a general plotting out my troop's next attacks
