Bow Peak and Mount Andromache (Black & White, Banff National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: I took this image, I was mainly focusing on Bow Peak and the jagged mountains peaks off in the distance. When I later looked at the GPS coordinates and azimuth, I was able to determine that Bow Peak was the main mountain in the image center, but it is Mount Andromache off in the distance, which is on the other side of the highway and Icefields Parkway. Interesting trivia I noted working on the image later.

Spring is Coming to the Icefields Parkway (HDR) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: That's what later came to mind when I looked at the HDR image I took at Bow Lake that morning in May. This was a look across the partial melting surface of ice on Bow Lake. Off in the distance are peaks of the Waputik Mountains including Bow Peak, BowCrow Peak, and Crowfoot Mountain (I used peakpagger.com for this based on the GPS coordinates and azimuth I captured in the image data). For this image, I took five images exposing at different levels and then combining for a final TIFF using HDR Efex Pro 2.

An Iced Over Bow Lake and a Backdrop to BowCrow Peak and Crowfoot Mountain (Black & White, Banff National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A view across Bow Lake while walking around the Simpson's Num-Ti-Jah Lodge area. One day I'll stay a night over at this lodge. Today though was a chance to take in the wintry look of the nearby Waputik Mountains and Crowfoot Glacier off in the distance.

Mountain Views Along the Icefields Parkway (Banff National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: A setting looking to the northwest while taking in views at a roadside pullout along the Icefields Parkway in Banff National Park. Bow Peak is the one a little left of center with other ridges and peaks of the Murchison Group also present beyond.

Using Trees to Center Myself on the Journey Ahead (Banff National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: At a roadside pullout along the Bow Valley Parkway with a view looking to the northwest. This is in Banff National Park. My thought on composing this image was to get down low and center myself with the highway as a leading line into the image. Centering would also help to create a balance between the two sides of the roads with the tall trees all around. I liked how there was a set of peaks off in the distance in the image center.

Evergreen Lined Highway (Banff National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: Along the Bow Valley Parkway in Banff National Park with a view looking down the highway to the northwest. My thought on composing this image was best described as a symmetry between the two sides of the highway and lining myself up with the center stripe. I also squatted down to capture a lower point of view, bringing down the horizon to capture tallness of the evergreens all around me. I've been on this section of the highway many times before and always love making a point to stop to soak in the view as well as capture a few images. Using the PeakVisor app, I was able to determine that the distant mountain are Bowcrow Peak and Crowfoot Mountain along the Icefields Parkway.

Looking Across the Turquoise Waters of Bow Lake to Bowcrow Peak and Bow Peak (Banff National Park)

Looking Across the Turquoise Waters of Bow Lake to Bowcrow Peak and Bow Peak (Banff National Park) by Mark Stevens Via Flickr: By getting down low, I wanted to capture the look across the lake waters to the far off peaks in the distance. For me this image was also about contrasts. The lower portion was blue and turquoise while the upper portion had colors of brown, green, gray, and whites. The lower portion had the ripples and waves across the lake waters while the upper portion had the jagged peaks carved out and shaped by glaciers over the millennia. I would also be remiss to not include a note about a nice cold breeze blowing across from the nearby Bow Glacier :-)
