Né en 1913, Charles Trenet va révolutionner la chanson française. En 1938, il est, pour la première fois, seul sur scène : moderne, tonique et poétique. Dans la salle, c'est le délire. « Je chante », « Y'a d'la joie » « Boum » ! Il rompt avec la chanson réaliste, mélodramatique, sentimentale et volontiers grivoise. Avant lui, le Music-hall était surtout populaire, avec Trenet c'est l'arrivée des bourgeois ! Il joue avec les mots, écrit de petites histoires surréalistes « Je fais des chansons comme les pommiers font des pommes ». Comme tous les hommes de son époque il porte le chapeau, le sien négligemment, derrière la tête pour montrer sa chevelure, blonde et savamment crêpée. Très vite cet accessoire- pied de nez au canotier porté sur l'œil de Maurice Chevalier- devient fétiche. Sous l'occupation ce chapeau posé crânement en arrière et sa silhouette de zazou enchantent les adolescents, qui montrent ainsi leur hostilité à l'occupant. Ses chansons jazzy et hymnes à la liberté, déplaisent en haut lieu. Le « clown judéo-américain » a même les honneurs de Lucien Rebatet. « Douce France » est reprise dans le maquis. Les zazous affichent avec insolence leur anglophilie dans leur tenue. Longues vestes à carreaux- pied de nez à la politique du rationnement-pantalons très courts, cheveux longs et gominés en opposition aux coupes courtes des collabos. Ils parlent même le français avec un accent anglais. Trenet lui, s'habille avec un complet-veston bleu, porte toujours des cravates claires et plante un œillet rouge à sa boutonnière. LA HARDROCK ETAIT ELLE LA COURSE DE L`ANNEE ?

Possible.On attendait la grosse bagarre entre les deux meilleurs coureurs d’ultra du monde avec plus d’impatience que les huîtres tièdes du 24 décembre : le bras de fer a tenu toutes ses promesses.

À droite de la chaise : Kilian Jornet : 4 fois vainqueur de la Hardrock, 3 fois de la course de quartier de Chamonix, 2 fois du Grand Raid de La Réunion, 1 fois de la Western States.

À gauche de la chaise, François D'haene : il a levé ses grands bras dans le Colorado l’année dernière, a raflé 4 fois la course de quartier de Chamonix (record) et le Grand Raid (record), mais le four Californien s’est toujours refusé à lui.

En arbitre, Dakota Jones. Un gars qui a battu Kilian deux fois, un type aussi attachant qu’intelligent. En ramasse-morts et prête à claquer un énorme truc, Courtney Dauwalter. Short long, large sourire. Cette fois-ci, elle n’allait pas se louper.

Pas de musique épique au départ, 145 dossards : Silverton n’est pas Chamonix. Truc assez rigolo : l’altitude la plus haute de la course de quartier est l’altitude la plus basse de la Hardrock. Deux salles, deux ambiances. Boum badaboum, le trio sur la photo s’échappe dès le début. La course ressemble rapidement à un match Real Madrid / FC Metz. À mi-course, Kilian a des crampes, François bobo à son bidon. Dakota prend la poudre d’escampette et écrabouille ses cuisses. 13 minutes d’avance sur les deux monstres qui vont retrouver la santé puis engloutir l’intello. Il terminera finalement troisième à 1h30 du vainqueur. Le duel a bien lieu et la bataille fait rage. De l’extérieur, on a cru à une arrivée main dans la main. Voulez-vous un Nadal / Djokovic qui se termine à 2 sets partout ? Nous, non. Kilian accélère encore dans la dernière bosse et lâche François. Les dix derniers kilomètres sont les plus rapides. 4’32’’ du kilo de moyenne entre les kilomètres 154 et 158 pour le Catalan qui déboule dans Silverton 21h36’24’’ après avoir quitté la ville. Nouveau record et 5ème victoire, record de Karl Meltzer égalé. Les grands compas de François accusent tout juste 15 minutes de retard. Cinq heures plus tard mais avec sept heures d’avance sur la deuxième (elle a eu le temps de faire un puzzle 10 000 pièces avec un motif de la même couleur), Courtney rafle la course, le record et devient la première à gagner la Hardrock, la Western et la course de quartier. Vivement le Grand Raid pour compléter la collection.

La Hardrock, cette course où il faut courir à plus de 4000 mètres pour espérer embrasser un rocher à l’arrivée. Sublime.

Three Minutes to Eternity: My ESC 250 (#58-57)

#58: Friderika Bayer -- Kinek mondjam el vétkeimet? (Hungary 1994)

Seven countries debuted in the 1994 contest (including Russia--see #149 about that), and I thought this was the best of all of them. While To nie ja showcased Edyta's vocals and put her on the road to superstardom in Poland, Kinek mondjam el vetkimet does something more than that for me, as it creates a compelling soundscape and actually makes me feel something.

The song puts Friderika in a vulnerable situation, where she seeks somebody to talk to. It gets occasionally interpreted as a teenage pregnancy, because of the line "A meg sem született gyermekemnek"/"In spite of nobody dying and no children being born" and the English version suggesting that the narrator aborted the child. I didn't get that sense while I was listening to it, but I could relate to it a lot, because of the need to relieve oneself of the burdens that haunt them in life. I felt lonely at times, and need someone to talk to about life. (also, the title translates to "To whom I may confess my sins?", and the slight religious hints intrigues me again, haha)

The minimalistic instrumentation highlights that fragility; there's the guitarist playing that melody, the occasional tambourine, and the orchestra in the background. They create a little world for three minutes, filled with longing and the need to cry. It's almost like a prayer for understanding, because of the simplicity and sincerity of it. And it is just pure gold, deservingly getting Hungary’s best entry to date (for now, I hope).

P.S. A shout-out for @eurosong and @white-eyed-girl; both really love this song, but for the former, it's their favorite Eurovision song ever!

Final Impressions on:

--1994: It's known for having seven new countries come over (four that missed out on Kvalificacija za Millstreet in Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, and Estonia, along with Poland, Russia, and Lithuania), along with being an especially ballad-heavy year. Several times in the running order, it seemed like all the songs blurred together, though I do think that the song quality was high enough to keep it from being bad. Most notably, Riverdance blew everyone out of the water with its use of Irish dance; it became more popular than the whole starting lineup. Basically, that was epic, along with the crowd in Point Theatre cheering for Ireland when they received multiple 12 points to get their third straight title.

--Hungary: Definitely one of the more unique countries in the contest, in terms of what they send. Looking back, they were more up-and-down in terms of quality, but they never leaned towards something more "basic". When they did deliver, they really did in spades; that helped with maintaining an eight-year qualification streak between 2011 and 2018. Sadly, they withdrew because of their increasingly authoritarian government, which is made even worse because they looked like they were going to win. Hopefully, they come back soon!

#57: Minouche Barelli -- Boum Badaboum (Monaco 1967)

“Before blowing everything up, boom boom Leave me the time to love, badaboom Still leave me my life, boom boom At least a thousand and one nights, badaboom”

Another Serge Gainsbourg-penned song, I find it quite interesting. Whereas Poupée de cire, poupée de son (#179) and White and Black Blues (#74) deal with similar thoughtful issues with well-written lyrics, Boum Badaboum is a lot more straightforward.

Despite the silly title, it has a serious message about trying to enjoy what life is about before she gets killed in a nuclear explosion. The United States and the Soviet Union were just hours away from catalyzing a nuclear war five years ago, and yet amongst the negotiations and proxy wars of the Cold War, tension remains. These pleas are almost drowned out amongst the cacophony of the "bada-boums", which can be an acquired taste to some people.

Mincouche's voice is a bit shouty, which when combined with the instrumentation, makes me waver on whether or not I truly like the song. However, it does gets the message across the poppy soundscape, and she performs it with a bit of mischief amongst the despair. The orchestration for this makes it so cool and groovy, you wouldn't know that she's shouting for a little bit of peace!

j’ai fait une dizaine d’années de cours de piano puis j’ai complètement arrêté puis j’essaie de reprendre un peu ces dernières années 

et là, ça faisait 30 minutes que j’essayais de jouer un morceau que j’ai déjà joué 1000 fois, que je connaissais par coeur à l’époque (c’était mon morceau d’entrée au conservatoire!) (Marcia alla Turca de Beethoven pour les connaisseurs)

je galérais comme jamais, j’oubliais les dièses et les bémols, je ne suivais pas le rythme, j’avais tellement de mal à reconnaitre les notes que j’étais à deux doigts d’écrire sur ma partition (ma grand-mère m’aurait tué) et pire humiliation, je n’arrivais pas à faire les deux mains en même temps 

et d’un coup, j’en avais marre d’être conne donc j’ai arrêté de fixer ma partition et bim badaboum bim boum j’ai réussi à jouer les 3/4 du morceau d’une traite de mémoire  

le cerveau est vraiment un organe formidable
