Know No Bounds
Jets of steam shot from the cracks, filling the circular chamber with a heavy mist. The coffin hissed as its lid slowly opened, moved by the invisible hands of old sorcery.
Four warriors clad in bone and bronze stood in front of the strange sarcophagus, gazing at the figure contained therein, once blurred through fogged-up glass, now coming into full view as the coffin lid continued to slide open. An old woman, stark naked.
All four men instinctively took one step back from the large casket. The flames on their torches fluttered in the sudden surge of wind shooting through the chamber. They raised axes and spears, prepared for the worst of all demons to emerge from the coffin’s bowels.
The hissing died down and the tomb turned even colder than it had been, prior to them disturbing its peace in search of wealth and fame. Where the black marble floors had been coated by steam, droplets of water now frosted over with lightning speed, right before their widened eyes.
The lid slid onto the ground on its own and stopped with a hollow thud. Slender fingers with claw-shaped nails slithered over the edges, splayed languidly, then clutched the sides. Emerging from the glass coffin’s bowels, the old woman slowly sat up. Wet with an unidentifiable dew and slime, locks of raven black hair clung to her head.
Furtive glances, darting back and forth, devouring the warriors with milky-white eyes.
Blue lips parted and revealed sharp teeth, provoking shudders from these four tall men. Each one of them easily dwarfed the feminine, withered figure sitting in the glass coffin. Those chapped lips curled into a bone-chilling smile.
One of the warriors shivered again. All of them hesitated to attack. Dreading the power of whatever accursed creature they had just discovered. Whatever they had awoken from a long, long slumber.
“Xiva basav azavav,” whispered the gaunt thing.
Its wrinkled knuckles turned white as it gripped the edges of its coffin tighter. Angrily. The smile faded, melting into a frown. A crimson color filled those stark white eyes.
“Xiva basav azavav,” it hissed at them, fiercely, like the pipes of the coffin. “Botaz vazanav. Vaz aejav.”
One of the once brave warriors lost his nerves. He lunged with his spear and stabbed the creature.
The spearhead plunged into the creature’s flesh. Sank in with some resistance and a softly squelching sound, just like it should do in any human flesh and body.
But no blood.
No blood emerged from the wound.
No sounds of pain came from the creature.
It looked at the spear sticking out of its belly with a wide-eyed expression of utter disbelief. Then it cast that same glance at the warrior.
Its face contorted from frown into a full-blown rage. Clawed fingers gripped the spear’s shaft in a sudden burst of speed, and it leapt from the coffin, snapping the weapon in half, and causing the warrior to stumble, hitting the ground ass-first while the creature landed almost gracefully on all fours, like a feral beast ready to pounce.
The spearhead clattered to the ground.
Still, no blood spattered. Nothing but a dark black viscous substance oozed from where the spearhead had broken through withered flesh.
One of the warriors finally shouted, voice haunted with a trembling mixture of fury and fear, “It’s living dead! Kill it! Kill it!”
The other men howled in unison their war cries, raining their attacks upon the creature. Axes and spears cut through the air with unbridled anger. Shadows bobbed as their torches moved and everybody broke out into a deadly dance.
They were fast. Reflexes of hunters, muscles of killers steeled by grueling combat.
The creature was faster. A blur that avoided the burning lights and dodged every attack with ease. To a noise like twigs snapping, its claws elongated in a flash, and with the sudden shattering of a bone armor and a splash of crimson, the first man’s neck was sliced to ribbons.
Dropping his weapons to clutch what remained of his throat, he fell to one knee. The creature’s talon-like hand punched right through another man’s chest, ripping out a beating heart to a chorus of revolting noises and snapping vessels.
The organ still pumped blood as the creature snarled and evaded a wide swing of an axe coming from behind it, ducking past another spear’s thrust and clawing the next man’s face so deeply that he would never see nor breathe through his nose again—and no matter, because the creature lunged at him.
Its jaw unhinged like a snake’s, teeth grown to twice their length, flashing with dull reflections of the remaining light as two of three torches had fallen to the obsidian floors, becoming slick with blood, every subtle sound drowned out by a chorus of pained gurgling and whimpering moans and screams of pure agony. The monster’s maw chomped down and tore a whole chunk out of the man’s face, gnashed its teeth, quickly chewing and then spitting bits of cartilage and bone and flesh back out to spray the ground.
The last warrior standing, the only one unharmed still, he backed away in terror and turned to flee like the cowards they all truly were. But the large metal doors to this weird chamber had closed behind its intruders, and the creature landed on his back. Its limbs slapped against armor, wrapping around him in a deadly embrace.
Bones and tendons snapped as the thing twisted and then tore a strong weapon-arm out of its socket.
The man shrieked at the top of his lungs. The creature tossed the arm aside, letting it flop to the floor. But it would not let go of the coward, latching onto him with its claws sunken deep into skin and muscles like little knives digging deep, and its horrid maw clamped down around his neck from where it rode on his back.
It chewed before rearing its head, ripping out a fatal portion, then chomping and chewing and gnashing and snarling and spitting before it sank its teeth right back into the gaping deadly wound.
Slurping, sucking, drinking; emitting ghastly noises. The warrior’s own groans turned feeble until croaking out into nothingness, and he collapsed under the featherlight weight of this creature. It sucked, and sucked, and sucked, and grew heavier by the second, hunched over him, convulsing rhythmically. His skin rapidly tightened around his bones in matching waves, constricting, and turning pallid in the little light shed by the three puny flames on the black floor. The blood and bodily fluids drained from his body with unnatural speed.
All torchlight rested on the ground, where two of the survivors still flailed about, helplessly, slipping in the growing pools of blood everywhere, soon managing to accomplish little more than weakly twitch.
The creature could have been confused with displaying mercy as it pounced on the next of them, snuffing his life out quickly as it drank the lifeblood from his neck just as with the one before, replete with the same awful sounds that made the last one’s heart fill with despair.
Barely illuminated, just within the shrunken sphere of light shed by a nearby torch, the remaining survivor could only watch as his companion died in front of him.
The final survivor, the spearman who had lunged first, the one who clutched his sliced neck, he hoarsely stammered, trying to plead, but the words that sputtered out of his mouth with gobs of blood emerged from his injured throat as something unintelligible. Pleading, no doubt, but the creature did not care.
It did not even understand the inane language of this pathetic creature.
Once it had turned the next one into a drained, desiccated husk, it knelt in front of the last one on all fours, a now-smooth back arched like a cat’s. In a fluid motion, it licked blood from the floor in a way that could be confused with sensuality, were it not for all the human viscera that coated its naked form.
The creature licked its sharp teeth and smiled. It hissed at him, in words he could not understand even if he tried, “Savak vejadav, allovax azabav azavaj, javavea vaheva!”
No mercy. It would show none.
It took a leisurely time to watch him during his moments of dying, gazing at him through bloodshot eyes that never blinked. It looked far more like a human woman now. No longer withered and old, but having gained the definition of a younger, voluptuous woman.
Picking up the exposed heart that it had ripped from his companion’s chest cavity, it brought the organ to its mouth and sank its teeth into it and smacked now-full lips as it chewed—compared to how it had bitten its way through grown men’s necks, it took much smaller bites out of the lifeless heart, savoring the taste, almost like someone coyly nibbling at a little snack.
It grinned at him with its mouth full, cheeks bulging with the gore getting mashed up inside them, blood dribbling from grotesquely splattered lips.
A devious, sinister grin formed across its visage, shedding any vestige of humanity. A little flame of torchlight reflected in its eyes, glinting with a deep-rooted sense of sadism, now smoldering and red-hot.
Moments before it saw the life fade from the eyes of its last victim—sensing the slowing of his heartbeat, the soul escaping from the body—it cast the half-eaten heart aside and lunged at him with a growl, dining on his face until he lost consciousness.
The heavy metal doors had swallowed all sounds from the circular chamber. Other adventurers outside were oblivious to the grisly fate of their companions. Not a single scream had they perceived.
In the minutes that followed, they knew not how the creature drained the lifeblood from every single body, sucking them dry. How it wallowed in the pools of blood, moaning as a person reaching orgasm. Eating human flesh had only been for sport—to spread shock and awe. It licked blood from its fingers, the true substance that gave it life.
When it was satisfied, the creature had fully taken its original form.
She had taken shape, somewhat bloated but now looking like a healthy human woman. From a gaunt and pallid creature had she transformed into a curvaceous queen. The elongated claws and teeth and crimson eyes remained.
Approaching the only exit from the room, she waved a hand and sorcery commanded the heavy steel doors to slide apart without making anything but a swishing sound.
Clinking and clanking produced by other warriors exploring the ancient palace and pitifully trying to strip it for precious metals echoed through the high-arched corridors. She stood still for a spell and listened.
How alien this place must have looked to them, with it oddly shaped arches crowning high and vaulted ceilings, and sleekly plated surfaces that had dulled over the course of millennia, fogged up by grime.
She watched these creatures from the shadows, creeping through pools of darkness, always staying on the edge of any light that their primitive torches cast.
Unheard. Unseen.
Never attacking. Just observing. Drinking in the details, studying their features and their old-fashioned armor and their greedy glee as they ransacked the place. Watching through those blood-red eyes, learning slowly that they tried to steal anything shiny from her ancient abode. But their archaic tools did little more than superficial damage, and she cared very little about any cosmetic blemishes to her home. She left these other three men alone.
For now.
It was always good to keep a meal for later.
She crept into a small room, where the doors obeyed her arcane gestures, silently sliding open. The less-than-precious-looking shapes and walls here had likely deterred the graverobbers in their process of plundering the palace, and the cramped size of this chamber had likely led them to mistakenly believe this was a worthless little storeroom.
They could not have been more wrong.
This room—this tiny room—'twas the brain of the palace.
One of them tinkered uselessly in the heart of the hulk, a choice he would soon regret.
Her clawed hands hovered over a wide sheet of metal on one side of the room. The tips of her claws clicked and clacked as they tapped with steadfast precision against tiny protrusions from a surface beneath it, which rhythmically gave way and caused the room to slowly, gradually, spring to life.
A blinking red here, a blinding green flash there, a screen of glaring white that bathed the dark chamber in bright light. The walls hummed, the devices here all came alive, yet did not live in its truest sense.
Just like herself.
The floors and ceilings began to subtly vibrate in unison with the hum, a sensation more acutely felt by her than the intruders in her palace.
But not for long.
Their shouts echoed through the corridors, growing aware of how the damned place awakened.
Just like herself. She punctuated the dimming of their fates with melodious laughter, booming through the unhallowed halls.
The screens that all flickered on now began to flash with cryptic magick symbols and glyphs that the intruders would have taken centuries to decipher, running across displays and blinking and flashing and causing her red eyes to jitter as she took in all the information relayed to her.
On some of the screens, she observed the intruders through what they would have likely considered to be arcane eyes—her cameras.
She laughed harder yet as she watched them scramble on her screens. The heart of the palace glowed brightly, engulfed in a blinding light that swallowed whole the greedy graverobber there. Not even ashes would be left behind from his sudden and violent incineration. Exposed to the heat of her vessel’s reactor, no such organism could possibly survive.
Seeing the others running through the halls now in a heedless panic, she continued to laugh until that, too, died down, leaving only a cruel smile upon her lips. Many thoughts swirled in her mind.
The vessel had stood here for so long, now fully overgrown in this jungle, on a planet she had feared would bear no mammalian life to ever drink blood from again. Quickly forgotten were the last memories preceding a long and dreamless sleep, the resignation that she may never feast again.
The ship’s systems still worked like a charm. The computer’s scan completed, identifying the people inside its halls down to the smallest details of their molecular composition, and picking up traces of an entire civilization of their kin to surround the lands where her ship had made landfall, oh so long ago. She concluded that they must have evolved in the past three thousand years of her long sleep.
The smile grew from ear to ear.
If all else failed, she could always return here to feast again. Perhaps they would pose larger threat upon next visit, but that would make the hunt only more entertaining. The little wake-up snack had kickstarted every fiber of her vampiric being, and her hunger knew no bounds.
The starship roared to life, eliciting screams of surprise and terror from the two men still trapped aboard. With utter futility, they banged their little fists against the hatch from which they had entered, now having closed behind them and trapping them inside during the takeoff.
The jungle grounds outside quaked as the vessel lifted off, breaking centuries of tall and ancient trees in its wake and snapping millions of vines that could not stall to the departure.
Oh, what dread that they must have felt. She relished the thought of tasting more adrenaline-tinged blood. She would play with her food when she grew hungry again.
What the warriors must have confused with a dormant ancient tomb for them to raid, now rose, hovering over the lush and primeval forest, leaving a gaping wet pit where the ship had broken free from the earth, rubble and dirt still raining down from its pitch-black surfaces. Foliage still slid off its sides where it levitated, revealing a sleek and eerily smooth form, fit for interstellar travel.
The engines flared up with the fury of a thousand suns. A thin white line of energy blasted from the bottom of the ship, scorching and turning to glass the earth below as it propelled itself upwards with terrifying speed. The warriors’ kin would riddle forever what they spotted streaking across the sky that day. Had they even yet understood the very shape of their home world?
She laughed melodiously at the shouts of confusion coming from outside the control room. Banging of fists against other steel doors, clueless of how to escape. Their now-flying tomb.
But there was no escape for them. The just desserts of their greed. And her dessert for later.
She would have to capture them and store them somehow for later consumption. Meals to go.
When she had last put herself to rest in cryostasis, the hunger had left her week.
It was rare for so much food to willingly deliver itself to her doorstep, but she was not one to turn down a willing and hearty feast. The two remaining adventurers in her ship, strong and able-bodied as they looked, would offer ample supplies for another jaunt through outer space. She would have to get creative, though. Frozen food was not as good as keeping them fresh.
Surely, she would find a way.
One of the devices beeped and displayed the closest class B exoplanet. Ocean covered most of its surface and it teemed with life forms, just like this one now did. Not too many stars away.
Her claws clickety-clacked across the keys again, setting course for this new destination.
Little did she know of her destination, gazing hungrily at the three-dimensional hologram as it hovered above the central console and slowly rotated to display her next target.
The planet she surveyed for harvest and feast was our Earth.

Ondo zaude?
“Kaixo” esan zuen, eta eskua mahaiaren gainean utzi zuen, kalimotxotik hurbil. Suposatzen dut nire gorputzak jai giroa antzeman zuela, aisialdi une harekin bat egiteko erabaki bizkorrak hartu baitzituen hari begietara begiratzea eraman zidan denbora laburrean.
Garunean, oporretara joan aurreko azken txirrinak jo zuen. Ez zen inor gelditzen. Nabaritzen nuen oraindik ere oso langilea zen baten bat joan aurreko azken beharrak egiten: hizketa arinerako gairen bat desesperatuki bilatzen “Toki komunak” edo “Azkenaldian ikusitako pelikulak” fitxategien artean. Amore eman zuen, azkenean, besteekin batera alde egiteko.
Ahoan, xurgagailua pasatu zuten, baikorki, etxean bisita izateko esperantza duen gazte batek bezala, baina trukean lehorregi geratu zitzaien. Mihia ahoko alde guztiekin trabaka zebilen, ezer mugitu aurretik ere.
Bularraldean, okasioari nahikoa iritzi zioten su artifizialak jaurtitzeko. “Zenbat?” galdetu zuten beharginek. “Guztiak”, erantzun zieten kapatazek, “koloretakoak ere bai”.
Sabelean, duela ordu erdi edandako tekila hurrupa odolera botatzea erabaki zuten. Horren ostean, ohitura denez, zorakeriaren bat egin behar, eta hestegorriaren bukaeratik puenting egiten hasi ziren. Haiek tekila odoleratzeko besterik ordaintzen ez zituztenez...
Sabelpean, nola ez, protagonista ninduen film erotiko baten emanaldia hasi zuten. Zinema aretoan giroa bizia zen: elkarri adar joka zebiltzan, krispetak botaz eta pertsonaiak agertzen ziren bakoitzean hainbat “Uuuh” eta txalo entzuten ziren.
Belaunetan, pelikula oso ona zela esan zieten; inork ez zuela nabarituko ordu eta erdiz edo lanpostua hutsik uzten bazuten.
Gertakari hauek guztiak, banaka sinple eta ulergarriak badirudite ere, segundu bat baino gutxiagoan kondentsatuta eta guztiak batera bizitzea tokatu zitzaidan niri. Ondorioz, haren irribarre kirikak atzealdean zebiltzan nire lagunen imintzioekin batera interpretatu nituenean, margolari txar batek margoturiko erretratuan edukiko nukeen aurpegiera izango nuela ebatzi nuen: hein handi batean beste ni mozkorti batek izango zuen aurpegierarekin (zeina banintzen, apur bat behintzat, nire aurrean zegoen gintonicak salatzen zuenez) eta beste batean gauzak ulertzea asko kostatzen zaion ume batenarekin (zeina ez, nekienik, behintzat) osatuta.

Risik is not your average electro trash vampire freak next door; the Ohio-based DJ/producer/graphic designer has been blaring her dark bass sound through the ears of unsuspecting listeners for several years.
The genre-disregarding artist recently released her debut original single, “BORING,” and has gone on to garner support from names like YourEDM, NastyNasty, DOMEOFDOOM and more.
Curating a dystopian world out of her music, risik incorportes a vast array of genres into her heavy experimental sound, taking influences from dubstep, drum and bass, midtempo, leftfield bass and more. She has also shared the stage with an impressive list of names, including G Jones, Kill The Noise, Bleep Bloop and REZZ.
GRL GANG member risik is also the host and organizer of a women’s DJ workshop where women are given an opportunity to learn DJing and production in a hands-on environment designed to make them feel comfortable and confident. In addition, her AIRPLANE MODE playlist series is designed to showcase music that helps risik and her friends cope with stress, depression and anxiety with 25 collections to date.
Listen to risik’s guest mix and check out an exclusive interview with her below.
UPCOMING SHOWS:
April 27th - opening for Yheti (Tour Deformed) w/ EAZYBAKED & FRQNCY in Columbus OH
May 17th - Sidestage in Columbus OH
July 7th - Headlining Gnarbeque Music festival in Columbus OH
I’m so excited to have you as a part of GRL GANG! How and when did you initially get into music production/DJing?
I’m so excited too, thank you for organizing this community! :) I started DJing early 2012, shortly after I discovered electronic music and started going to local shows every week at this bar called Dub Land. My best friend at the time started DJing, bought a controller and told me I should try. I was super hesitant at first but after he said it was “just like guitar hero” I gave it a shot and next thing I know I’m up till 4AM mixing songs and messing around. I was hooked. Production took a bit longer though, I kept telling myself and others that I just didn’t have the “mind” for it, without even trying in the first place. I had friends tell me over and over that I should try but I never did, until I was handed a little drum machine, a korg volca beats, and I couldn’t put it down. This was late 2016, and I started getting more serious about learning production in 2017.
I’ve been a huge fan of yours ever since you dropped “Boring” and I can’t wait to hear more original music. Who are some of your top musical influences?
Oh wow thank you! I’ve been a fan of yours since I first heard NINTENDO so that is a huge compliment! My top influences are Bleep Bloop, G Jones, Zeke Beats, Sayer, NastyNasty, Noer the Boy, Tsuruda, VVN, Aphex Twin, Lapalux, Boys Noize, Clark, Goth-Trad, and Lorn. I’ve also been listening to catslash and kai whiston a ton lately.
You aren’t confining to the SoundCloud mentality of forcing a steady flow of releases just to stay relevant, which I think makes your releases much more impactful. Is that something you are consciously doing?
It’s something I’m consciously doing in the sense that I don’t want to release music I’m not 100% confident in and proud of. I write a lot of music but I’m really shy with it. I think it needs to completely reflect how I’m feeling or what I want it to sound like before I’m ready to show anyone. I don’t really see the benefit in releasing music just for the sake of releasing it. I’d rather do something meaningful, something that people will remember, and take my time than just post half finished tunes.
You recently hosted a women’s DJ workshop in Rochester, New York, which is incredible. Do you have plans to host similar events in the future?
It was one of the most amazing experiences in my life and I definitely want to have more events like this in the future. The workshop was the biggest project I’ve ever taken on and one of the most meaningful, and I discovered how much I love to teach. I want to gain a bit more experience under my belt before I host the next one so I can help answer more questions and give a broader range of advice to the attendees. Right now there are no planned events, but this is a big long term goal.
Being that your day job is a graphic designer, do you find that experience to be helpful to your music career?
Absolutely, making music to me is a lot like designing with sound. I use a lot of the same thinking patterns, theories and concept building skills in both areas of my life. It’s also really awesome to be able to design my own stuff. I worked with this designer Nat King on my logo, and being able to expand his work into my entire brand architecture is a lot of fun. Graphic design inspires my music everyday, and vice versa.
Your DJ mixes are always extremely unique and it seems like you find a lot of hidden gems. Where do you look and what do you usually look for when putting sets together?
I pretty much never stop looking for music, mostly on Soundcloud and Spotify and occasionally Bandcamp. I’ll listen to the algorithm generated music first and then I’ll scroll through my Soundcloud feed. I try to only follow artists who post music that is interesting to me, and this helps to keep my feed content that I actually want. Sometimes I’ll go through those artists pages, because the ones I follow generally repost and share a lot of music too. I’m also in several discord communities and artists are always posting music, both theirs and stuff they listen to, and all of these groups are completely different so it really opens up pathways to discovering new music I probably never would have discovered without them. My friends are my biggest resource when it comes to new music, I am so grateful for people sending me stuff all day, especially the people who know me best and know what I’m into.
What will we be hearing in your mix today?
You’ll be listening to some of favorite songs, new and old, tunes I’ve never used in any other mix. I’m also debuting my new tune ‘WUT’ that I wrote with Clyde, coming out on his EP with Dome of Doom this summer. And you’ll be hearing the voices of all the amazing humans who helped make such a ridiculous intro happen (thanks sons love yall)
Finally, what does GRL GANG mean to you?
GRL GANG is strength, inspiration, friendship, support, and empowerment. I am so thankful for this community, thank you!
