Irgendwie schon ironisch. Da erklärte seinerzeit Pistorius, dass er nicht als Bundeskanzler kandidieren würde, aber das einzige, was in seinem Leben karrieretechnisch gewiss wäre, wäre, dass er nicht Papst würde.

Jetzt hat Deutschland gewählt, SPD krachend verloren mit Rekordtief, und der Papst Franziskus liegt im Krankenhaus bei kritischen Zustand aufgrund Atemwegskrankheit und Nierenversagen.

The visit comes just days before pro-Russia Donald Trump is to be sworn into office in the US.

Sir Keir's visit also takes place just a day after Germany's defense minister paid a visit.

We need to face the fact that Russia is at war with us. The Cold War effectively resumed shortly after Putin took power 25 years ago and he has gradually ramped up his aggressiveness. His intention all along has been to restore the Soviet Union in all but name.

Friedrich Merz vows “Whatever It Takes” to defend Germany

Friedrich Merz, who is expected to become Germany’s next chancellor, has announced a political deal to raise hundreds of billions of euros in extra spending on defence and infrastructure, BBC reports.

“In view of the threats to our freedom and peace on our continent, the rule for our defence now has to be whatever it takes,” he said.

Merz, whose conservatives won German elections last month, said he and his likely centre-left coalition partners would present new proposals to parliament next week. He spoke of the urgent need to increase German spending in light of “recent decisions by the US government.”

Merz, 69, did not elaborate, but he openly criticised President Donald Trump’s treatment of Volodymyr Zelensky in the Oval Office.

Earlier this week, he said European leaders need to show that “we are able to act independently in Europe.”

At a press conference on Tuesday, Merz, along with leaders of the Social Democrats and Bavaria’s conservative sister party, said Germany expects the US to stick to “mutual alliance commitments … but we also know that resources for our national and allied defence must be significantly increased.”

Merz said in English that he would do “whatever it takes” to defend freedom and peace – a reference to Mario Draghi’s vow to save the euro in 2012 when he was president of the European Central Bank.

At the heart of his proposals is a €500 billion (£415 billion) special fund to repair Germany’s crumbling infrastructure, as well as loosening tough budget rules to allow investment in defence.

Germany imposed a “debt brake” or Schuldenbremse after Europe’s financial crisis, capping the budget deficit at 0.35 per cent of national economic output (GDP) in normal times.

The new defence proposal recommends that “necessary defence spending” of more than 1% of GDP should be exempted from the “debt brake” restrictions, with no upper limit set. Although Germany has given more aid to Ukraine than any other European country, its armed forces are notoriously underfunded.

Meeting with Scholz

The government of Social Democrat Olaf Scholz created a €100bn fund after the military conflict in Ukraine in 2022, but most of that money has already been disbursed. Germany will have to find an extra €30 billion a year just to meet NATO’s current target of 2% of GDP for defence, a figure security experts say should be raised to 3%.

Scholz was due to meet Friedrich Merz and Social Democrat leaders on Wednesday, ahead of an EU summit on Ukraine and European defence. His government collapsed late last year because the three parties in the coalition could not agree on reforming debt limits.

Debt restrictions are spelled out in Germany’s constitution, or Basic Law, and changing them would require a two-thirds majority in parliament, which is not a foregone conclusion because of the large number of seats held by the AfD and the Left Party.

However, the new parliament will not convene until the end of March, and the measure will initially be considered by the old composition.

Boris Pistorius, the Social Democrats’ defence minister in the outgoing government, said the spending plans were a “big and important step” even if they were far from a coalition deal. Ten days after the German election, the parties are taking part in preliminary talks that will continue on Thursday.

Pistorius told German television that excluding defence from the state debt rules was not so much about arms as about “the security of our country – nothing more and nothing less.”

Social Democrat leader Lars Klingbeil, who spoke alongside Merz on Tuesday, detailed the plan to reinvest in German infrastructure, saying: “Our country is wearing itself out.”

Loans totalling €500bn would go into a fund to repair roads, railways and other critical infrastructure; €100bn of the money would go to Germany’s 16 federal states, while loosening the debt brake so that the states could also rake in small sums.

The speech delivered by the US VP (whose name shall remain unacknowledged) at the Munich Security Conference was ignorant. Here's the response of German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, which is outstanding.

I am incandescent with rage right now. I feel sick to the stomach. A US Vice President stood today on the soil of where so many Americans gave their lives to defeat fascism in Europe. He delivered a disgraceful speech that spat on their graves. Not that we should expect any different, given his boss skipped visiting the graves of fallen Americans in Europe for fear of getting his hair wet. The same man who called the same fallen heroes suckers and losers.

As a Brit that loves America and the American people, I am deeply disturbed at the insults delivered by a man who once described Donald Trump as an “idiot" and said he was "reprehensible." Privately, comparing him to Adolf Hitler.

How times have changed. Vance is now part of the most authoritarian administration in American history. An administration actively seeking to deny bodily autonomy to women. An administration pursuing the same mass deportation of immigrants that Europe witnessed in 1930s Germany. Vance is a man that his own president doesn’t even see as his successor.

He came to Europe to vomit his Christo-fascist bile on leaders from the UK and across Europe, in what appears to be a retribution tour designed to assert American power.

The U.S. are to my knowledge the only NATO country to have invoked Article 5 of the NATO charter after 9/11. We, his European allies, met that call with no questions asked. We sent thousands of soldiers to the battlefields of Afghanistan and Iraq to fight a war on the false premise of Donald Rumsfeld’s ‘known unknowns’. We did this despite millions of our own citizens protesting in the streets of our cities.

Our military stood shoulder to shoulder with his military and we, like many Americans, stood to salute our fallen young men and women returning home day after day. I have tears in my eyes as I write this, thinking of them and their loved ones. Our brave men and women willingly gave their all and far too many made the ultimate sacrifice in support of an American led war.

For the record, 6000 Ukrainian solders server alongside American soldiers in Iraq. This, despite Ukraine not being a member of NATO. In 1994 upon signing the Budapest Memorandum they gave up their nuclear weapons in return for security assurances from the US and the UK. These were then reneged upon in 2014 when Russia invaded Crimea. They were told ‘An assurance is not a guarantee’.

Now, despite their friendship and their brave sacrifice on the battlefields of Ukraine, the President of the United States has decided to abandon them and hand a victory to an indicted war criminal, who illegally invaded the sovereign territory of a US ally. An ally who’s soldiers had previously lost their lives supporting America in its war on terror.

SHAME ON HIM. Shame on the man who dodged the draft and never served a day in defense of his nation. He is a coward and I would gladly call him that to his face. To all those Americans on social media currently posting vile insults to those who have always been there for America, I say, democracy is bigger than you, as you sit anonymously behind your phones posting poison.

America might have the most powerful army on the planet, but remember, that same army fled from Saigon after being handed their ass by a bunch of peasant rice farmers, armed with grenades made from discarded US coke cans. Ukraine have been to the Russian army what the Vietnamese were to you and we salute them.

You might want to throw Ukraine under the bus while stealing there mineral deposits, BUT EUROPE WILL NOT ALLOW THAT TO HAPPEN. I know for sure that the UK will not abandon the Ukrainian people. Our aid to GDP contribution already exceeds that of the US as does Poland, Germany Finland and others.

The U.S. is no longer a reliable ally and if need be, we will stand with Ukraine without America.

As for your pathetic tariffs, do your worst. You will soon have no friends but thugs and autocrats, so I’m sure Wun Dum Fuc will be right at home.

Two undersea cables in Baltic Sea disrupted, Pistorius warns of possible “hybrid warfare”

The severing of two undersea fibre-optic communication cables in the Baltic Sea should be seen as an act of sabotage, although it is not yet clear who is responsible, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said on Tuesday.

Two undersea fibre-optic communications cables in the Baltic Sea, including one connecting Finland and Germany, were cut between Sunday and Monday. Pistorius said ahead of a meeting with EU defence ministers in Brussels:

“No one believes that these cables were cut accidentally. I also don’t want to believe in versions that these were anchors that accidentally caused damage over these cables. Therefore we have to state, without knowing specifically who it came from, that it is a “hybrid” action. And we also have to assume, without knowing it yet, that it is sabotage.”

The 1,200-kilometre-long C-Lion1 cable connecting Helsinki to the German port of Rostock stopped working around 02:00 GMT on Monday, Finnish state-owned cybersecurity and telecommunications company Cinia said.

Cinia also said it was too early to judge whether C-Lion1 was damaged intentionally, but did not rule out an external impact. Cinia Chief Executive Ari-Jussi Knaapila claimed:

“Without external impact, there are no such incidents in these waters.”

A 218-kilometre internet cable between Lithuania and the Swedish island of Gotland failed at around 08:00 GMT on Sunday, according to Lithuania’s Telia Lietuva, part of Sweden’s Telia Company group.

In a joint statement, Finland and Germany said they were “deeply concerned about the severed submarine cable” and were investigating “an incident that immediately raises suspicions of intentional damage.”

Telia Lietuva spokesman Audrius Stasiulaitis said another cable had also been severed. It is owned and operated by Swedish company Arelion to carry Telia Lietuva’s internet traffic, the Telia spokesman said. Swedish Civil Defence Minister Carl-Oskar Bohlin told Swedish public broadcaster SVT:

“It is very important to find out why two cables are currently down in the Baltic Sea.”

The Baltic Sea, located in northern Europe, is an active commercial shipping route and is ringed by nine countries, including Russia.

Past incidents with undersea cables

Last year, an undersea gas pipeline and several telecoms cables running under the Baltic Sea were severely damaged in an incident that caused alarm in the region.

Balticconnector, an undersea gas pipeline between Finland and Estonia, was damaged last October. A Chinese cargo ship, the Newnew Polar Bear, was found to have been involved in the damage – its anchor hit the pipeline. The South China Morning Post quoted sources as saying that China recognised the accidental damage to the Balticconnector by its vessel.

The Nord Stream pipelines connecting Russia and Germany in the Baltic Sea were destroyed by explosions in 2022, and German authorities are still investigating the incident. Finland is participating in the Far North Fiber project to lay an undersea fibre optic cable across the Arctic Ocean to Japan. The cable is expected to be almost 17,000 kilometres long.
