It seems that North Koreans fighting in Putin's war were falsely told that they were just going on a training mission. I think some of the original invading Russian soldiers were told the same thing in early 2022.

Ukrainian investigators are questioning two soldiers from North Korea whom the country’s forces captured in Russia’s Kursk region, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy. [ ... ] The Ukrainian president said it was “not easy” to capture the North Korean soldiers, claiming that Moscow attempted to hide their presence by letting Russian and North Korean troops kill their wounded comrades on the battlefield to avoid being taken prisoner by Kyiv. Ukrainian officials said the prisoners were talking through interpreters working with South Korea's National Intelligence Service (NIS). The SBU said one prisoner, who said he was born in 2005, claimed he believed he was "going for training, not to fight a war against Ukraine." The other man was forced to write his answers because of an injured jaw, the SBU said. That soldier said he was born in 1999 and was a sniper in the North Korean army. The developments followed new Ukrainian attacks in Kursk to prevent Russia from snatching back territory. A lightning Ukrainian offensive first captured large swaths of the Kursk region in August 2024. It was the largest incursion onto Russian soil since World War II.

Actually, the Kursk incursion by Ukraine is the first time since WWII that foreign troops have have taken territory in Russia.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said that the "first North Korean prisoners of war are now in Kyiv" and that they were "regular [North Korean] troops, not mercenaries." “The security of Europe and the Indo-Pacific is directly linked. We need maximum pressure against regimes in Moscow and Pyongyang.,” he wrote.

The two North Korean soldiers are lucky to be alive. Russians on the battlefield have been killing wounded North Koreans to prevent them from falling into Ukrainian hands. This probably qualifies as a war crime.

Question: Given that Russia and probably North Korea would have preferred those soldiers to be dead, wouldn't it be safer for them to remain in Ukraine or move to South Korea?

I want to thank our military again, who have been fighting for our independence and protecting our homes and lives for the ninth year.

I also, want to thank the volunteers who collect funds, find and deliver the necessary goods,save the lives of people and animals.

And thank you to everyone who joins the path to victory, with their work or donations.

I congratulate all Ukrainians on the 32nd anniversary of our Independence, and I wish us the fastest victory.

I realize a bunch of you are probably tired of hearing about the war in Ukraine, but here's an interesting video I found that shows just how poorly the Russian Armed Forces are doing. Granted, the information is from about a month ago, but I doubt things have changed to Russia's favor.

Vladimir Putin backed Syria's bloodthirsty dictator Bashar al-Assad for almost the entire quarter century he has ruled Russia. Putin placed Russian bases in Syria and used his military there against civilian populations.

Now that al-Assad has fled to Moscow and the Russia bases in Syria are emptying, Ukraine sees an opening.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha paid a visit to Damascus for talks with Syria's new leader. Ukraine, a major agricultural power, has already sent hundreds of tons of food to Syria since the fall of al-Assad.

Syria’s de facto ruler Ahmed al-Sharaa held talks on Monday with a senior Ukrainian delegation led by Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, the Syrian state news agency (SANA) reported, as Kyiv moves to build ties with the new leadership in Damascus. SANA provided no immediate details about their talks, held in Damascus, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said last Friday his country had sent its first batch of food aid to Syria, which is traditionally a close ally of Russia. Zelensky said that 500 metric tonnes of wheat flour were already on their way to Syria as part of Kyiv’s humanitarian “Grain from Ukraine” initiative in cooperation with the United Nations World Food Programme. Ukraine, a global producer and exporter of grain and oilseeds, has said it wants to restore relations with Syria following the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad and his flight into exile in Russia. [ ... ] The ousting of Assad by al-Sharaa’s Islamist group, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), has thrown the future of Russia’s military bases in Syria – the Hmeimim airbase in Latakia and the Tartous naval facility – into question.
