Backrubs give comfort

In my many years of Simming, I thought backrubs did give comfort, because it seems so obvious that they would. Apparently EA did not think it was obvious, because it only raises social. I think that's dumb, so I decided to fix it.

Because of how socials are coded a gradual increase is too difficult to be worth even attempting, so the mod gives a one time boost at the end of the interaction. I decided to make two versions, one that has a flat amount for all Sims, and one that gives a different number for pregnant Sims. I figure any pregnant lady enjoys a backrub more than anyone else ever could, so I wanted mine to have a slightly higher boost. Both versions pull their number from a BCON that is included, so it is easy to change to whatever number you want. Normal sims get 40 points comfort, which is 20% or 1/5th of the entire bar. In the pregnant Sim version, a pregnant Sim receives 60 which is just under 1/3rd or 30% of the entire bar.

No conflicts that I know of. Will conflict with mods that alter social motive and relationship score gain from backrubs. Does not conflict with ACR or inteen. HCDU will find conflicts, load order will not help if there is a conflict. No idea what EP is required, sorry.

I met Chris one Sunday afternoon after driving past her three times as she sat on a bench outside our local library after closing. I stopped to ask if she needed a ride, and found out that she was homeless, staying in motels when her SSI came in and on the street when it ran out.

As the years have passed, I've learned a lot about her. Despite her parents kicking her out at 17 when she was outed to them as gay, she went back to school and became a social worker, working in several Chicago hospitals through the 80s and 90s, and, like a lot of queer women in the caring fields at that time, tended to and provided comfort and care for (among others) so many gay men, young and old, living with and dying from AIDS, from the earliest days of the disease through the availability of the triple cocktail and to the brighter days of hope.

Through it all, she had relationships with women in a time where that was something that wasn't always safe to do. Some were good, some bad, and some resulting in her losing nearly everything, but she struggled through. She quit social work in 99 or 2000 when her mom got sick and passed away, and then stayed out of the workforce to care for her dad until he passed in 2006. Those experiences impacted her deeply, and she became permanently disabled during that period, leaving her living on SSI, and struggling with her own mental health. She eventually lost her condo, and bounced in and out of apartments and motels.

When I met her in Sept 2019, I helped her get back into the motel she'd been staying at and bridging her to her next check and then making sure that she could stay there, and reliably get her maintenance meds and start rebuilding her life and credit.

This is her and everything she owned as we left her hotel room for the final time on Valentine's Day 2022.

The cat there is Bailey, her constant companion since they adopted each other in September 2021. They've both been through a lot and are absolutely the picture of "Who rescued whom?"

We started having biweekly dinners and I worked with her creditors and tried to get her credit score back into a good place, and helped her get banked and fixed up with access to the Internet and just help her feel more solid and stable in her life.

Just over 2 years later, in February 2022, we were finally able to get her into a senior independent living apartment, her first permanent home since about 2017. She had no furniture, but with some secondhand pickups and occasional pickups, we got her something resembling a home.

It wasn't perfect, and she had her grumbles, certainly, but it was her home. It was a place that she could launch from to recover and consider moving some place even better, if she chose.

However, Friday, July 14, Bailey had an afternoon vet appointment. Everything was fine when we left, but when we got home, with Bailey in a carrier in the backseat, we were shocked to see what looked like a million emergency vehicles & a whole lot of seniors sitting on the grass.

Chris and Bailey came with me to take my daughter into the city that evening, giving the situation 2 hours to develop and for us to get more information. We heard a few newsradio updates and saw this story on abc7, getting the sinking feeling that that balcony looked too familiar.

When we got back from the city, we were able to drive around the back of the building and confirm that this was her apartment.

We were able to get back to the building on Tuesday and get into the apartment to get her medications, but everything is water damaged from the sprinkler system (with all of its stagnant water) and the firehoses. All her furniture. All her clothes. Her bed. Her degrees. Gone.

Everything she owned is gone. She literally owns less now than when she was homeless. She's despairing and trying her best to keep it together, but she's lost so many homes in her life, going back to when she was 17 and her parents found out she is gay and kicked her out.

regarding pokemon sleep, it looks like you’re just looking for things to complain about. it’s designed to be this chill thing you check on during the day and leave running at night. to play it, all you have to do is sleep and feed your pokemon. no one’s telling you you to have to be the very best at it or pressuring you into paying for stuff, let alone the game itself.

Hi, I'm MerriAuthor. Apparently we haven't met because anyone who follows my blog would know that I've worked in game development well on 20 years now. I've worked across the industry from little nobody indie houses, to overseas gacha-fodder, to big ol' AAA major studios. Video games and their design are a big part of my life and, boy howdy, do I have some FEELINGS about the direction the industry as a whole has gone in as the years go by. Especially in regards to the predatory monetization of gaming and how it actively preys on children, uninformed parents, people with addictive behaviors, people with hyper-competitive personalities, and similar behavioral traits solely for the purpose of making money at their expense.

As with the previous person I spoke with on this topic, that is the base function of the game. But it's by no means the design of the game. Pokemon Sleep's entire game play rotation and marketplace are designed around encouraging the Player to interact with it as much as possible within an intentionally limited time frame. Meanwhile, the game's own time scale is such that it expects Players to log hundreds if not thousands of hours of interaction with it. Its own base gameplay loop is a weekly schedule and its shop schedule is monthly. Some Pokemon require a bare minimum of 150 hours of logged sleep to even access. Pokemon Sleep wants you to be in it for the long haul.

It's also based on collection; nearly every facet of the game is listed numerically and with a percentage value or progress bar, which are functions designed to produce urgency to complete them in the Player. Human brains don't like seeing an unfinished goal, especially one represented so overtly as an unfilled progress bar or a percentage value with a decimal. Want to have your favorite Pokemon as your napping buddy but don't want to put in a ton of effort playing the game to boost up your Snorlax's power score? Better hope it's one of the low-tier Pokemon assigned into the lower brackets of the gameplay progression, because otherwise you're never going to see it. Though you could always just fork over some cash. Nearing the end of your week with Snorlax and you're just shy of a milestone you've been aiming the entire week for? Good luck! You can pay money for that extra little boost, and once you've done it you'll resent its absence enough to want to buy it again! Do you want to level up that cutie first Charmander the game gave you at the very beginning specifically to ingrain itself with faux emotional value into your favorite Charizard? Want your Eevee to evolve into one of its most popular Eeveelutions? Want a Lucario, period? You'll need to put in hundreds of hours of consistent sleep to save up enough Sleep Points exclusively toward that goal... or you can just buy access to it immediately, through first purchasing access to the Premium Subscription! A Premium Subscription which, again, doesn't auto-cancel if you delete the app and can't be canceled through the app itself, for all you distracted parents who don't pay attention to fine print and wonder why your kid's game is running up a bill on your credit card each month after the 14-day free period - just long enough for you to have forgotten all about it in the first place. Snorlax wants a specific kind of Berry this week, but none of the helper Pokemon you recruited gather that berry, or they do and are just too low on Energy to manage it? Aren't you lucky! The shop will just sell you solutions to these problems the game itself created specifically to get you to shell out money!

Buttons to make purchases and drive interaction - the app store, sleep pass, how many dream shards you have, a prompt to buy more inventory space, your missions, your current goal, the progress meter and rarity values of your Pokemon's sleep styles, your collection and their levels, etc - are all constantly and prominently displayed. The entire first day of actual gameplay in the app is a tutorial explaining how it wants you to do more than just sleep and passively collect to the point that it literally sets a daily schedule of activity for you. The mechanics explanations are so egregiously long that the Professor character literally apologizes to the Player for being so long-winded about it. Oh, an adorable moment of self-depreciation and understanding! How humanizing and encouraging of empathy from the user, done with a cheeky wink and nod. Now that we've softened your emotional state ever so slightly, here's some more microtransaction-driven gameplay elements!

If this was really just a cute little game to idle around with for its own fun, there wouldn't be a cash shop, nor would the game require a consistent internet connection to its servers. The big thing with games like these is that they're not made for the Player's benefit or entertainment. They're made to make the parent company profits. That's it. If the Pokemon Company didn't think they'd make substantial returns on the investment of development, support, marketing, and online distribution costs to put this game out into the world, they never would have made it. That is a core reality of any product put out these days. I just spent this last week helping my studio's marketing and sales team make sales projections for one of our upcoming titles, figuring out how much we could reasonably charge our potential customers literally down to the penny. And the game we're selling isn't even a service with any kind of microtransactions or DLCs. Profits are fundamental in any studio production and, where microtransaction apps are concerned, are the core focus of why the app exists.

If you're perfectly happy with playing Pokemon Sleep as an idle "pop on every once in a while, poke for a few minutes, then forget about and never pay a cent" kind of game? Totally fine, you do you. But understand that Pokemon Sleep doesn't want you as its player and will not cater to your experience. The core gameplay of Pokemon Sleep is already designed to actively degrade into a subpar experience for those who don't pay to play and that rift will only become more pronounced as time goes by. Everything around the cash shop exists for no other reason than to encourage you to use the cash shop. Over time, the gameplay will further contort itself to drive more interaction with and reliance upon the cash shop as the app sheds its non-paying users who just tire of it and move on, instead doubling-down on the lingering, paying users who have already proven themselves a reliable stream of revenue. That is how these things always go and have always historically gone.

There's also the consistently apt adage of "if you're not paying for the product, you are the product". Pokemon Sleep requires an internet connection any time you want to interact with the app - there is no offline mode. Further, the actual fine print in the terms of service (not the bubbly, legally-meaningless assurances put into the game text itself) addresses that it will collect and may share your device information, user ID, and app activity (ie, the schedules, timing habits, and spending habits the game itself has ingrained into its interaction with the Player) for analytics and advertising purposes, and that they're okay with sharing (ie, selling) that information to third parties without naming who those third parties are. And boy, does the game really want you to link your Google, Apple, and Facebook accounts to it as part of its core functionality! Worth keeping in mind as well is that the app requires constant access to your microphone and can pick up sounds as minor as a sheet rustling when you turn over in bed. The game's bubbly, meaningless text assures you that it doesn't save or transfer the snippets of sleep recordings it makes of you each night, but it makes absolutely no assurances whatsoever in the fine print that it's not using your microphone for other purposes. It does, however, point out that it will be making use of your phone's functions even when you're not using the app.

So, yeah, I'll just still be over here not playing Pokemon Sleep and encouraging others to do the same, as well as pay closer attention to the nature of so-called "free to play" games.

Hey gang, big sister moment but I’ve worked really hard this year on building my credit score and making changes after years of financial abuse from an ex, that was then followed by adhd impulse spending when I was finally away from that situation. So despite still being poor, disabled and only able to work two days a week I’ve still managed to make a big change, and thought this would be helpful to fellow poor people sick of advice like “ just save your money and don’t spend on Starbucks every day!” Long post, so strap in:

For context I am Scottish so things may be uk specific however: likely to have similar counterparts in different countries:

1. Started writing down every bill every bank/card it comes from and ticking them off each time they’re paid so I know they’re out the way, have also added them all to my calendar like “nov 8th phone bill £34” for example and that’s helped a suprising deal given how forgetful I can be

2. Get a loqbox account- (or any credit building account) - this actually has made a much bigger difference than I thought it would, it’s an account I pay just a £10 a month to and it informs folk who control credit checks that you’re making regular payments and boosts your score. I’ve never been able to get credit cards or overdrafts even on my bank due to how poor my credit was, had that since June and now my scores went up I have an overdraft and two credit cards (how I’m paying for Invisalign lmao so I’m still skint but will get to that later)

3. The credit cards in question- obvs I have had to use these a bit to try and get these teeth to not be in crumbling agony but I would recommend getting one to build credit, then not using it. Or using it as little as possible, then repaying ASAP if it does get used. I have a Zable one which is for folk who don’t have great credit trying to build it, will send my referral link if anyone wants to apply

4. Prioritising- the most boring one and less relevant if you’ve less bills to pay, but I’ve had to really focus on what I need to pay off most and least. This is the real life version of those “ oh just don’t buy Starbucks every day” posts lmao, but every month as long as I’m like ok the rent payment, council tax, food shop etc the absolute basics are in my savings account so I know I’ve got them there everything else is circumstantial. Even if it’s other stuff that’s important obvs, it’s stuff that can be worked out yknow? I can default on a bill and have to pay extra the next month which is annoying but I’ve still got my roof over my head and food in the fridge type deal.

5. Billing dates (part 2, electric boogaloo) but since writing them down on step one, actually look at the billing dates and when they’re coming out if it works w your bank account payment date. Like mines are scattered throughout the month cos some can’t be changed unfortunately (just depends on the company) but as I’m paid on the 28th the majority of them come out at the last week of each month/first week of next. If it can’t be changed it’s not the end of the world if you make sure there’s money put to the side for it, but if it can try and make sure the dates are on or around your payment dates- you may have to call the companies or w Spotify it’s like cancel the plan then restart it the day you want it to be coming out. But it’s all simple changes that don’t take long

6.Student discounts- if you are a student and have a student number or even know someone who does you can get a lot of discounts on thesethings like Amazon, Spotify etc. check all your outgoings and see if any of them can be changed to a student account for a cheaper rate

7. Selling what I don’t use- not relevant to everyone but I had realised I would at times go online and buy clothes/knick knacks when bored, then not have money to pay bills, and at times the clothes ended up not fitting properly anyway so if that was the case putting them on Vinted and getting money for them was helpful

I’m still working on it an it’s still not as good as I’d like it to be! But it’s however improved drastically and I wanted to share these in case anyone’s been in similar situations to me and is trying but struggling to improve things for themselves ❤️

on the etiquette of fandom respect

I'm not sure why I'm doing this, really. We've all seen those other posts that circulate around (or the vast majority of us have, at least from my notice) discussing things like negativity towards creators and proper etiquette when it comes to commenting and bookmarking and sharing another person's work. It always seems to fly in one ear and out the other, yet here I am, preparing to write an essay, mainly because I don't think we should ever stop saying it in the hopes of improvement.

Let's start this with bookmarks on AO3, because it seems like people either forget, they don't know, or possibly they simply do not care. Bookmarks can be seen by creators. Meaning they can see your tags, your bookmark collections, and your bookmark comments. There are numerous creators who enjoy going through the bookmarks on their works to see these things, because it's extra insight into why someone liked or even loved that creation, most times. There are also, in my experience, a lot of people who bookmark works and do not comment, so again, it gives the creator that extra special boost to keep doing what they're doing, to create more.

Leaving personal rating scores for a work, downgrading comments, or, in all honesty, opinions on what you did not like in the work is unkind. No one is coming to attack how you choose to keep track of your bookmarks, but please remember these are PUBLIC unless otherwise chosen by you. You can, however, make private bookmarks that only you can view. Even the creators cannot see these beyond a number of how many bookmarks a work collectively has. If you have a rating system or opinions on a work that could even remotely be construed as unkind, please make your bookmarks private. It's incredibly simple. There is a checkbox to select.

Now onto comments and the etiquette behind it. No one is forcing you to comment. While it is appreciated by all creators, it isn't a requirement. Creators love hearing from everyone who views their work. Comments bolster creators, encourage them to continue creating if they love doing it, which most creators do. But if the only thing you can think to say is something demeaning, criticizing, or has no bearing on the work you just viewed, it's probably better not to say anything at all. If you have questions, ask them. Creators love talking about their works, typically. Most will jump at the chance for a discussion. But this does not give anyone the right to ask accusatory questions that degrade a person's work. Also, leaving a comment about any work that blatantly goes against the very obviously stated tags/warnings, or leaving a comment that is short and brief and really doesn't make any sort of reference to the work itself is rude, plain and simple. Do not do that.

You are not being asked to leave a novel behind in your comment (though that's almost always appreciated to a massive extent). Leave a few kind words about liking or loving the work, because just something as simple as "loved this!" goes a long way as encouragement. If you have the time or something specific, tell the creator about a part you liked. They'll adore you for it. But again, none of it is a requirement. All creators ask for is a bit of common sense and respect from people in exchange for what they've created. Basic rule of thumb: ask yourself if you made something you were proud of and showed it to someone, would you be happy or hurt by the comment you're about to leave?

Lastly, let's discuss credit. It's seen a lot, and pretty much everywhere now. Someone finds artwork or a fic or maybe even a simple quote from a work they enjoy, and they repost it with no credit, not even a title (in regards to fics). No reference back to the creator at all. Stop gatekeeping works that do not belong to you. You do not own those works. They have been shared with you, nothing more. By transferring them or even a piece of them somewhere else without proper credit, you are not only removing someone else's ability to properly view this work without directly asking what it's from (if they ask at all, which most do not), you are taking that potential encouragement away from the creator and making them feel worthless.

These works, whatever they may be, were created for you. You may try to argue that they were shared in a public forum, and the creator should understand that by doing so, they're opening themselves up to potential criticism, theft, and even bullying. And you would be right, creators are fully aware of this. But here's the thing: these works, at least in a fandom setting, are being created for FREE. A person is taking time out of their life to make this wonderful thing, and they are offering it humbly solely for the pleasure of doing it, to bring you pleasure.

And you might even argue that creators are not making these things for you, but for the world. But aren't you part of the world? Did you find and are you reading/viewing/listening to these works? If so, then yes, they were created for you, with you in mind. All creators ask for in return, literally the only thing, is some basic human kindness and decency, because creators are not required to share anymore than you're required to comment or spread their works around.

Some creators have thicker skins than others, but keep going as we have been, and one day, the content you love so much might be gone. It's already beginning to disappear for lesser things. Don't be the reason it continues.

Since I haven't seen anyone gush about the new personal memoria yet I'll do my part. Kinda funny I made a long post about the mechanic and the devs immediately follow up with a new batch. Yay to that!

Rena: A good amount of accele MP gain up + doppel damage up is decent but the real treasure is her newly found permanent MP Regen for 10.5 each turn. The thing about Rena is that she was one of the OG accele gorillas which meant back in the day she was one of the best girls to build and cycle magia on. Nowadays she is still somewhat fine (good single target DPS but her lack of automatic MP recovery outside of the magia itself and lack of attribute strengthened damage leave her outclassed). But having to rely on purely discs to build magia is not really the way to go anymore (mind you she is an attack type so her percentage for mp gained from accele discs is at 100% instead of the 120% for magia units). So while it will not make her top tier all of the sudden having more self sufficient magia cycling can help her keep up in non optimized teams.

Momoko: Permanent charge conservation might be huge and that's for us to find out. I think she has the potential to be an amazing DPS for teams that don't really have access to charge conservation and don't usually roll for her charge strats (le me for example I'd rather not charge but oh well). Always having permanent ignore defense should make her an even bigger mirrors threat. Good for you Momoko.

Kaede: Kaede is a decent all rounder and the go to forest unit for early and f2p players since she can blast quite well and has some serious damage output on her magia. Not to mention she can solo a Kimochi so you go girl. What her memoria does is essentially an attribute strengthened doppel nuke (three massive damage modifiers for one turn) which should help her Kimochi performance quite a bit. While she does not have an MP recovery, her magia increases accele MP gain up which helps her cycle magia with her own accele discs (ergo solo Kimochi strat). But her lack of ways to buff her DPS is notable especially nowadays so having a nuclear turn should boost the damage scores. Not to mention that even though this is an active memoria it gives 1500 Attack instead of any defense so even more damage.

Nanaka: Blast MP is a MUST on every modern girl and I think the trend started with Ashley? Anyway most of the early blasters, even 4* ones like Kyoko or Holy Alina don't have it (not even when SE started coming out). So good for Nanaka she gets to enjoy a mechanic they should have gotten all along.

Blast, the former king of NA, has little to no place in modern Magia Record. Aside from charge blast strats that is (which dedicated magia strats can bypass with the right setup).

I don't think Nanaka is gonna reclaim her NA glory but it's nice to know that in long fights she can reliably get to magia (it's attack + dew down and buff cleanse so quite utility oriented. Kinda funny because it's Hazukis Magia but with buff cleanse instead of curse). Also 30% aqua attack up is nice. Nanakas biggest issue is her SE which is all over the place but that's a discussion for another day.

Kako: I think her personal might be the same as Natsukis so Accele MP gain up + Defense up + Permanent MP Regen. Its good, Kako is a decent unit for low rarity teams because of her accele draw and strong healing. So having her be better at gaining MP makes her even more reliable. Even though her memoria is a passive one it gives defense so choosing this memoria will hurt her DPS (but with some buffing from teammates her doppel can still delete an enemy)

Meiyui: Honestly most low rarity charge units suck. So does Meiyui who does so many random things. But now she gets to have a boost to her charge combo count up (it should be +4 now) and together with her charge draw personal she can potentially be a decent unit when you want to go into charge strats and don't own fully slotted and/or dedicated units. The rest of her buffs are alright I guess but not worth talking about.

Konomi: Oh boy our girl Konomi got a funny one. Her memoria will give her a 100 MP for the next turn and also a nice three turn defense boost. Fast MP and fast magias are always nice. You know what's even better? She has Fast Mana in her SE which means her mp is partially full at battle start. Throw in an accele combo with maybe one disc of hers or some MP recovery by other means and you potentially got a turn two doppel. Now her doppel is weird with it's damage in a horizontal line mechanic but considering it's Konomi you don't play her for damage.

Her effects are nice tho. A good teamwide heal, massive defense buffs for five turns, Accele MP gain up for all and mp regen for herself (doppel only, we love mp self sufficient units). So if you run into any situation where you know you will need a good heal or big defense buff your next turn just slot Konomi and proc her new memoria for basically a free doppel.

I think none of those units will suddenly become meta threats aside from maybe Momoko in mirrors and Kaede who already acts as a solo Kimochi threat but it gives players who WANT to use those units some more ease to slot them and use them.

But do I need to be using more credit to boost my score? I'm concerned about keeping it in good standing, but to be honest I'm scared of using the card more because I don't want to fuck it up and ruin my credit.

No need to use the card more! As long as you're using it regularly (once a month for a subscription counts) and paying it off every billing cycle in full and on time, you're doing great.

I smile and open the door. The walls are painted a sweet cream color. The curtains are a soft pink hanging to the floor. Baby jungle animals are painted and hung in frames above the smile while crib that Leia had picked out. A fiddle leaf fig is in the corner surrounded by stuffed baby animals. The carpet was a soft gray with a pink and white rug under the crib. The white dressed and changing table are on the opposite wall with a couple clouds hanging.  

A soft glider is in the corner with a pink blanket draped over the top and a soft pink bear on the chair. Baby books where on shelves on the wall. Leia’s eyes took in everything and then looked at Andy. “Do you like it?”  

Her eyes were shiny. “It’s perfect. It so beautiful. Andy, how?” 

“Trade secrets, darling. C’mon.” I took her down stairs where Stella, Miranda, Linus Ullmark, Brad Marchant and David Pasternak were waiting.  

Leia stopped. “What...” 

“Surprise, sweetie,” Stella said as she rushed her for a hug. “Andy and Luke organized all of this.” 

“Luke was here?” 

“No,” Miranda said, “but he and Andy split everything for the room.” 

“Tell her i bought the elephant,” a voice floated from her hand.  

“Oh, sorry, “she lifted her phone and Luke was on facetime from his hotel room in Seattle.  

“Lukey, you did this? “Leia was crying  softly as I wrapped my arms around her.  

“Well me and Andy did.  Did you like it?” 

“Its beautiful,” she looked up at me.  “Thank you so much.” She looked at the team. “You guys are amazing. She is going to love it,” patting her belly.  

We chatted and were getting ready to say goodbye when the doorbell rang. “I wonder who that is,” Leia said as she made her way too the door.  She opened it and froze.

Looking at Every UFO 50 game #1

UFO 50 - Bushido Ball (9/25/24) -  Score - 7/10

Oh yea, we’re doing this. So one of the games that came out this year was UFO 50. UFO 50 is a collection of 50 full original retro styled games with a meta narrative of all these games being made by a fictional company. Think what Action 52 could have been. Because every individual game in the collection is a full game, I decided that writing a post about each would be fun. Once I beat every game i’ll do an overall review of UFO 50 (I wanted to beat the game before the end of the year, but that’s not looking very likely.) Some terminology to go over for those unfamiliar with the game. Each game has certain ‘clear’ conditions that the player can aim for. UFO 50 has a little house with a dog that you can fill with gifts that you get from getting an ‘achievement’ in the game. Usually it’s stuff like beating the first boss though there are some that are harder than just beating the game normally (though usually they’re easier.) There is only one gift in each game, but it can be something to aim for if you don’t want to aim to beat each game. Gold usually means reaching the credits, though there are some exceptions. Some of the more arcadey games or early games in the collection in general don’t have credits but for the majority, getting the credits will give you a gold cart on the selection screen, hence golding. Once I gold a game I’ll be writing about it. My general plan has been to mostly approach the games in order from earliest to latest. So you’ll see a lot of early games to start with. Cherry is basically completing the game, either getting 100 percent or doing something in the game to prove mastery. My plan is to cherry a game if i’m enjoying it or if it seems obtainable but I will not be aiming for all cherries personally. For reviewing a game i’ll try not to have cherry requirements affect my overall opinion, though I may mention it. With that out of the way let’s get to the first game I completed. So I streamed UFO 50 when I first got it just to show it off and I jumped around a bit more on the time line during that stream. After the stream I mostly stuck with the release order (the fictional release order that is) but the first game I beat was Bushido Ball. Bushido ball is a tennis-like game where you pick one of 6 samurai and try to hit the ball past your opponent to score a point. Think pong but extreme. It’s a simple concept but I really got invested in beating this one when I played it late into the stream. It’s more addicting than you would expect. Keep in mind all of these games have limited controls due to being NESish style retro games. So 2 buttons and D pad are all you get. With Bushido Ball, one of the buttons slashes your sword and the other lets you roll. You can also hold the A button to charge or double tap a to use a sub weapon.

Since the game is pretty much tennis, you need to figure out how to get the ball past the opponent. For me I found rolling into the ball and striking it can help since it give the ball a bit of an extra boost. Smart use of your characters sub weapon can also help, though some characters have way better sub weapons than others. It doesn’t help that having to double tap A to activate them is a bit awkward and one of the disadvantages of this having an NES control scheme. The computer is pretty smart though, so some of the later matches can be pretty intense but it never feels unfair. The game is very fast paced, so even when you lose you quickly get right back into the next match. And luckily for getting gold you just have to beat each of the other characters and you get to continue at each. If you want cherry you will have to do no continues but for now i’m happy with my gold.  I do wish the game had a bit more music to it? Besides jingles at the start of the match or when you lose, most of the game is silent. I get what they were going for, but IDK with so many other games in UFO 50 having an amazing soundtrack, a game this late having nothing is just odd.

Overall Bushido Ball is a very good Ponglike and a simple but fun game to be my first clear. It’s nothing mind blowing but it’s one of 50 games and we’re off to a solid start.
