We are officially in the spooky season. Do you like to create seasonal content? I'm usually pretty lazy with season specific content but sometimes I have a burst of energy and I make an effort to take photos that fit the season.

Has anyone here read Dionea by Vernon Lee?

It’s a short story about a child washed up on a beach near an Italian village. The locals don’t know where she comes from and so she’s sent to a convent.

She grows up to become a beautiful and unconventional young woman. As readers, we’re left to wonder whether she might be a pagan goddess.

I love short stories that have a strange and uncanny feel to them. Dionea delivers that by the bucket.

The story was published over 120 years ago and is a little slow and wordy by the standards of 2024. I didn’t think it is excessively so, however.

Note: Vernon Lee is the pen name of Violet Paget. She was an Englishwoman who never lived in England. Born in France, she travelled around Europe before eventually settling in Tuscany for life.
