Book #4 of 2023 📖 “Disciplines of Grace” ✍🏻 Jerry Bridges 📚Christian Living ⭐️ 4/5 Quote: “Run, John, run the law commands. But gives me neither feet nor hands. Better news the gospel brings- it bids me fly and gives me wings!” Discipline and grace are not two words I would normally interchange or expect to see in the same sentence. Yet such is the Christian life as Jerry Bridges explains in his exposition of the role grace plays in our pursuit of holiness. Just as both wings of an airplane are crucial for flight, this book reminds us that the exercise of both discipline and dependence is absolutely necessary in our walks as children of the King. What I liked most about this book was that everything led back to the gospel. The gospel shaped each truth shared and fueled each encouragement written. I’ve heard many times from various Christian teachers to “Preach the gospel to yourself daily” and reading this book was such a practical and spiritually refreshing way to do that. Titus 2:11-12 says “For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age.” How beautiful that not only does God’s grace save us to live for him, but enable us to live for him! . . . #goodreadschallenge #bookstagrammers #readingaesthetic #ilovetoread #christianbookreviews #bookstaexplore #ilivetoread #readwriteunite #faithinspired #readbelievedo #christianbookbloggers #aspiringauthorsofig #emthewordenthusiast #bookishpost #readreadread #bookwormlife #booksonbooks #jerrybridges #thedisciplinesofgrace #pursuitofholiness #christianbooks #christianbookreview #navpress (at Grace) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpsuEU7PuJC/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

✨REVIEW✨ The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett . Today I tried put something different and wrote a mini review in spanish 💃🏻 . . Now for the English one: I loved, loved, looooved this book. It caught me in kind of a reading slump so it took me about a week and a half to finish it. I guess the beginning was a little slow but then the story diverges in different generations and perspectives so once it gained momentum, so did I. I feel like this is one of those books where you actually start missing the characters once you are finished and that is, of course, a sign that you have a good book in your hands. The story follows Desiree, Stella; two black women with light skin that part ways as one of them decides to live as a black woman and the other as a white one. You get to follow not only their stories and struggles but also the ones of their daughters, so the book allows you to see through the eyes of these very different characters and how they deal with race discrimination, prejudice and secrecy. Definitely I would recommend giving it a go, I even feel like it is important to do so. . have you read this book? What did you think? . . . #bookstagram #bookstagramespaña #review #bookreview #bookrecommendations #bookish #cozy #coffeandbooks #booksandcoffee #booksandcandles #thevanishinghalf #britbennett #lit #literature #bookworm #booktok #bookblog #bibliophile #bookishpost #potd #picoftheday #reviewoftheday #readmorebooks (at Madrid, Spain) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cpuuk1Goc7h/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

After months of being out of stock, we have hard cover editions of The Memory Librarian by Janelle Monáe!! The short story anthology incl months of being out of stock, we have hard cover editions of The Memory Librarian by Janelle Monáe!! The short story anthology includes stories by @shereereneethomas, Danny Lore, and Yohanca Delgado @yodelnyc. Purchase link in bio:@sistahscifi | www.sistahscifi.com| https://sistahscifi.com/products/the-memory-librarian-and-other-stories-of-dirty-computer-by-janelle-monae Reposted @readinginjenue 🫧 The Memory Librarian by @JanelleMonáe SYNOPSIS: In The Memory Librarian: And Other Stories of Dirty Computer, singer-songwriter, actor, fashion icon, activist, and worldwide superstar Janelle Monáe brings to the written page the Afrofuturistic world of one of her critically acclaimed albums, exploring how different threads of liberation—queerness, race, gender plurality, and love—become tangled with future possibilities of memory and time in such a totalitarian landscape…and what the costs might be when trying to unravel and weave them into freedoms. Expanding from that mythos, these stories fully explore what it’s like to live in such a totalitarian existence…and what it takes to get out of it. Building off the traditions of speculative writers such as Octavia Butler, Ted Chiang, Becky Chambers, and Nnedi Okorafor—and filled with the artistic genius and powerful themes that have made Monáe a worldwide icon in the first place—The Memory Librarian serves readers tales grounded in the human trials of identity expression, technology, and love, but also reaching through to the worlds of memory and time within, and the stakes and power that exists there. Thank you to partners @bibliolifestyle and @harpervoyagerus for this gifted copy. 🔖 #thememorylibrarian #janellemonae #janellemonáe #bibliolifestyle #igreads #bibliophile #bookphotography #booksofinstagram #bookishpost #bookishfeatures #booknerd #bookishflatlay #booklover #bookstagrammer #ilovebooks #bookblogger #booklove #bookgram #booksofig #becauseofreading #fortheloveofbooks #whattoread #readingismagic #booksbooksbooks #teacherswhoread #iteachhighschoolenglish #sistahscifi (at Sistah Scifi) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpfkhhML36W/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Book #1 of 2023 📖 “A Dog’s Journey” ✍🏻 W. Bruce Cameron 📚Animal Fiction ⭐️ 3/5 Quote: “Dog’ is ‘God’ spelled backward; you know that. That’s why you’re here, to help the nuns do God’s work. I asked my husband for a dog for Christmas. He got me this book instead 😅 Our landlord doesn’t allow pets in our apartment but I still think he could have pulled some strings to make it happen. All jokes aside, this lighthearted read was much appreciated and came at a good time. After my Pop passed away I came down with a rough bout of sickness, so it was nice to have something easy and entertaining to pass the time and get my mind off things. My husbands plan was foiled though. This book did not appease my dog fever. It only made it worse 😂 . . . #goodreadschallenge #bookstagrammers #readingaesthetic #ilovetoread #christianbookreviews #bookstaexplore #ilivetoread #readwriteunite #faithinspired #readbelievedo #christianbookbloggers #aspiringauthorsofig #emthewordenthusiast #bookishpost #readreadread #bookwormlife #booksonbooks #adogsjourney #adogspurpose #adogspurposebooks #animalfiction #booksfordoglovers #dogfever #iwantadog #christmasbookgift #storygrapher #dogbooks #dogstories #honestreview (at Dog Lovers) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cn5N82dSbh9/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Book Review for The Chase
Tumblr media
FYI: This was initially a mini review. For that reason, most of it was spoilers. Those have been removed so the review has been extremely consolidated.
When reading a spin-off series (especially one spinning from a well received series), you have higher expectations. You know the ability of the writer, have a solid feel of the strengths and weaknesses, and believe in your heart of hearts that it can only get better. What I am finding, more often than not – is that the spin-off series just can’t live up to the bar set by the original. The Briar U series is an example of that. I suggest the Off Campus Series to anyone who will listen. Kennedy is in exquisite form through every single book. When I started The Chase, I went in thinking I was going to experience the same captivating writing that I had in The Deal (or in The Score which is where we meet Summer for the first time as she is Dean’s little sister). Sadly, it just didn’t come close to it.
Summer and Colin’s story had a little bit of a jump start in The Score when Summer first lays eyes on Fitz and knows she wants him. While Fitz feels the same way, for him - Summer is out of the question. They are just too different and he can’t see past the “fluff” that she presents to the world.
There were a few things that bugged me about this book, which may be why I don’t intend to continue the series. First, for being presented as a carefree, accepting, lovable guy, Fitz is extremely judgmental. The second thing that irked me was how much Summer played with another character's feelings (sentence changed to remove spoiler). The back and forth between Fitz and Summer also felt a little drawn out.
Other than those to things, the rest of the book was ok at best. Once they worked things out, Fitz and Summer were pretty cute together and I loved how protective they were of each other.
Would I recommend the Off Campus series? Without a doubt! Would I recommend the Briar U series, as of right now no but I would tell anyone to read at least the first two books before making a final judgement call. I may take my own advice at some point. Only time will tell.
