Fergusson excelled in writing poetry in the Scottish dialect, but he suffered from severe depression. After sustaining a head injury he was committed to a mental hospital, where he died at the young age of 24. At the end of a unit, I love allowing students to work in groups to track a symbol. They create a PowerPoint together and draw on everything they learned to interpret the meaning of their symbol and how the ideas associated with it developed over the course of the story.
