“Where do I—” I reached out for an arm and noticed too late that it wasn’t striped. It was bare. There was a static shock when I touched it.

“Oh. You’re not my person.” I looked up. Black jeans and a white T-shirt with a backpack on one shoulder. Eyes so pale, a weatherworn, spectral blue. He was covered in sweat and slightly out of breath. I inhaled sharply.

“My trailer person, I mean. You’re not him.”His eyes were a vise.

“Are you sure?”

I nodded. He looked me up and down, indiscreetly.

“What are you?”

“I’m new.”

“Jake.”

We both turned. The woman who had known the wine stood in the doorway. She didn’t see me. Her gaze distilled the kitchen light to its purest element.

“Good morning. What time does your shift start again?”

“Oh, fuck off, Simone.”

She smiled, pleased.

“I have your plate,” she said, and turned into the dining room. The doors swung back violently. And then all I could see was his feet pounding the last few stairs.

I have said this before about the bad adaptation where they aged up the characters: when they're older teens, falling for monster traps makes them look stupid and foolish. For this adaptation casting I was so encouraged to see actual children because it meant the characters could fall into traps and not look foolish. Being children, vulnerable, hungry and tired, with limited resources lends itself to overlooking caution until something tips them off almost too late. The monsters design their traps for scenarios like this and it works most of the time. For Annabeth to just instantly know Aunty Em is Medusa was a let down for me. If she's going to be immune to being deceived or taken in, then where is the tension for the audience to know something the characters don't?

However, this adaptation wanted to use episode 3 as a trust builder for the trio, and I think Medusa having beef with both demi-god parents was great fodder for trying to openly pit them against each other, only to instead show them how well they work together.
