Creator's Comment translations on the Shuake "Bad Ending" artworks (From the official 2024 P5 Royal artbook)

These are comments of these “Bad Ending” artworks from Akane Kabayashi, the Lead 2D Character Designer in P5 Royal.

This is the part of the artbook that I translated:

So I'll begin the translations now!

※ Translator Note: Ren is called 主人公 (the protagonist) in this.

放課後主人公とチェスをするのが明智の望みだと思うと、「結局主人公の事好きじゃん」と突っ込みたくなります。(香林)

Translation:

Kabayashi: When I think about how Akechi's wish is to spend time with Protagonist (Ren) by playing chess with him after school, it makes me want to say "In the end, he really likes Protagonist (Ren) doesn't he?"

明智と主人公はこちらを見ていて、実はこのシーンが丸喜エンドであると気づいてる設定にしてます。(香林)

Translation:

Kabayashi: Akechi and Protagonist (Ren) are looking at us (the player). They are actually aware that this is Maruki’s reality and that this ending scene is the Maruki Ending.

My Thoughts on these

HELLO??? YOU TELLING ME THAT DEEP DOWN GORO'S WISH IS REN WHICH IS WHY THE "BAD ENDING" LOOKS LIKE THAT??? YOU TELLING ME THAT SHUAKE WISHED FOR EACH OTHER??? THAT'S SO GAYYYYYY??? 😳😳😳

Remember when Goro said these to Ren in the engine room?

"Under different circumstances, we could have been great rivals... or perhaps even friends."

"I wonder why we couldn't have met a few years earlier"

Maruki must have caught that as Goro's "wish".

and Maruki is such a shipper on deck about it too lol. In the JP version of the game, Maruki probably implied in this scene that he knows that Shuake wished for each other. Even the camera is angled in a way where Ren and Akechi are on two different sides of Maruki with a spotlight shown on them:

I also like that there is some confirmation that Goro and Ren are the only ones aware that they are in Maruki's reality, and are kinda breaking the 4th wall about it 🤭

When I began to photograph nudes, I let myself be guided by this camera, and instead of photographing what I saw, I photographed what the camera was seeing. I interfered very little, and the lens produced anatomical images and shapes which my eyes had never observed. 🫥
