“You had gone up to the mountain, higher ground
to make a stand
Perched up on a ledge with a rifle in your hand
Singing ‘I don’t need no man’”
-Matt Heckler, Haw River Ballad
A song that really struck me since the first time I listened to it. Genuinely a joy to watch him perform it live, too- I suggest checking out both versions!
Live : recorded

"Second fiddle to her larger dreams, 17-year old Lisa Rhoades's talent for bluegrass music will, she hopes, see her through college and law school. Here with her niece Tara Jane Estes, she warms up for an old-time fiddling contest at Thedford, Nebraska's high school."

my real toxic trait is that I think almost any song could be improved with the inclusion of either a banjo, a clarinet, a fiddle, a horn section, or all four

Y’all. Tyler Childers, an Appalachian bluegrass artist from Kentucky, just released a song with a music video featuring a queer love story between two coal miners called In Your Love. At this point I have no idea if he’ll get backlash for it, but I would really appreciate if you would watch the mv below and maybe give some positive engagement. I have a feeling he’ll need it.
He has a beautiful discography with really thoughtful, poignant lyrics, and imo he does a fantastic job tackling complicated topics. I highly recommend him! With all the Jason Aldean stuff going around, it feels more important than ever that we have empathetic and authentic voices in country music.
(…and unlike Jason, Tyler’s 2020 song Long Violent History actually SUPPORTS the fight against racial inequality. You can listen to it here if you’d like.)
TLDR: Stan Tyler Childers 🖤

I run the “Trans Artists for My Queer Heart” playlist on Spotify, and part of that is having trans people with a smaller following submit their work to be featured on the top of the list. What ive noticed is that electronic music, pop, and folk punk seem to be the most common genres for trans artists.
Aside from folk punk, very few trans people make acoustic music. Which happens to be my preference!
So I am putting a call out to any trans people who play folk, bluegrass, classical, country, string band, culturally specific music, or whatever! If you are on Spotify, please submit two of your songs to be featured on the playlist! It has about 2000 followers and maybe people will see your music. More selfishly, I want to hear it!
If you are a cajun trans musician, plleeeeeeaase let me listen to your song
[additional note; you don’t have to be a solo artist. If you are the one trans person in your orchestra, even if you aren’t out, you can ask me to put it on there. They won’t know it was you. dm me.]
