GAMES I REVIEWED IN 2023 ➞ BLANC
Blanc is a great game to play if you’re looking for another co-op game to share with someone close to you. There are some noticeable issues including a lack of visual cues and a camera that’s just not as effective as it should be. Though the journey the game takes you on is fun, and the beautiful art style is clearly evident. It’s a short enough game and there’s definitely room for improvement. But it’s also clear that the passion is there. Another good and wholesome game for anyone to play!

The first month of the year is over already. And I'm sick. Again. After about 4 years of avoiding it, I finally succumbed to Covid. Ugh. (Good thing I usually write favorites in advance.) Other than that, video games dominated my January.
Palia: Palia is a free game that's a mix of MMO and farm sim. The thing that keeps me from MMOs is usually the pressure of the subscription price. But Palia has more going for it than the fact that it's free. I really like the characters and the world, and I enjoy the mechanics for the most part. Problem is there's horrible lag on Switch, so play it on PC if you can!
Blanc: I played this short but sweet game with my bestie and loved it. It follows a fawn and a wolf cub trying to find their families. You work together to solve puzzles. (Though you can also control both in single player, if you prefer.) And though it was a little glitchy at times, I appreciated this artistic game. 🥲
Paranormasight: This is a spooky mystery visual novel that I absolutely loved! I don't want to give away too much about the plot, but the style of this game is top tier for visual novels! (Even my more cynical bestie said it should be the "gold standard".) And the character designs are fantastic... save for some odd lip movements with a few. 😆 Also, I love Mio Kurosuzu. Quick warning: the game is not visually gory, but there are some pretty disturbing descriptions in a few situations!
Quantum Break: This game is about time travel and choices. Two of my favorite things in games! I loved the story and the unique ways it was presented, in both game and TV show form. Beth's part of the story was fascinating to me, as someone who has written some vaguely similar stuff regarding time travel. And I have a soft sport for Charlie, too. 😆
Mario RPG: I'm back to playing this and trying not to be sad that I'll eventually finish it. 😅 I struggle with favorite things ending, okay?
Honorable Mentions: Return of the Obra Dinn & Homebody.
Music Favs: My Photo in the Newspaper (Kate Miller-Heidke), 400 Lux (Lorde), The Girl (Woodes), Pale Lung & My Hand (Robyn Sherwell), Castles Crumbling (Taylor's Version), Artangels (Grimes), Heart to Hand (Lemolo).

Blanc is a short cooperative game taking us on a cute and charming little initiatory journey, where a wolf cub and a fawn will have to help each other through snowy obstacles.
You know me, I love cute things xD as soon I saw the trailer of this game, I asked my brother if he wanted to join me on this little travel. We played together on twitch this afternoon, it took us only 2 hours to finish and well it was very lovely even though the gameplay offers nothing new or surprising.
❤ A really adorable and very soft aestheticism with very pretty animations (during cutscenes but also in gameplay). ❤ A very relaxing and almost melancholy sound and musical atmosphere, which blends well with the spare style of the game. ❤ A simple but effective story that only passes through imagery (some scenes gives more emotion bcs of this imo).
+/- The system of mutual aid during the puzzles is nice, I just regret that we don't have more different interactions between characters (kind of silly things like sniffing each other, or being able to "talk" to each other at any time… ). +/- The puzzles are simple and are accessible to everyone and are rather varied so as not to be too repetitive, but the gameplay mechanics are a bit limited (2 actions per character). I'd have appreciated a little evolution over the chapters.
✖ A camera that likes to travel as much as our characters at times x) (some angles were kinda annoying). ✖ Some animation or display glitches.
Blanc is perfect for a quick game in good company, but you shouldn't expect a lot of originality either. I would especially remember my babysitter phase of the ducklings which made me sweat a little (save the babies!!) x'D

Hand-drawn adventure game Blanc will launch for Switch via Nintendo eShop and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store on February 14, 2023, Gearbox Publishing and developer Casus Ludi announced.
Here is an overview of the game, via Gearbox Publishing:
About
Blanc is an artistic cooperative adventure that follows the journey of a wolf cub and a fawn stranded in a vast, snowy wilderness. They must come together in an unlikely partnership to find their families.
Key Features
An Emotional Journey – Experience the poetic tale of a wolf cub and a fawn in the spectacular world of Blanc. Lost in a sudden snowstorm, they will have to lean on each other in order to follow the footprints their families left behind in the snow.
Breathtaking Hand-Crafted Art – Immerse yourself in the stunningly beautiful black-and-white world of Blanc—completely hand-drawn on paper in 2D before coming to life in 3D. Blanc focuses on the journey and experience of the animals with text-free gameplay and storytelling, allowing players to dive completely into its wondrous world.
Follow Your Families’ Tracks – Each animal has their own unique strengths that complements the other, which you’ll need to make use of to navigate through the snowy landscapes. Using only two buttons and movement, this simple gameplay allows for anyone to play and follow their journey home.
Cooperation Required – Two players take control of either the wolf cub or the fawn. Guide them through the environment, unforgiving weather, and obstacles that you must face together. Build a relationship together locally on the same screen or from far away with online play.

Glass Onion Spoilers - Foreshadowing and Among Us
I’ve seen a few posts dunking on glass onion for being “cringe” because of the Among Us scene and a few praising it for accurately reflecting the fact that this is all everyone was playing in 2020, but I haven’t seen anyone really talk about how brilliantly Among Us works as a foreshadowing/storytelling device.
On the surface - as the film itself points out! - the game is a neat little parallel of the island: one murderer hidden among us, with the objective being to find them out. But this comparison goes far deeper than the basic premise of the film.
Firstly, Benoit appears as the game’s imposter, and then, it is later revealed, is literally an imposter, arriving on the island uninvited under false pretences - one of the first major twists of the film spelled out to the audience in the opening act. And he isn’t alone - just as two imposters generally work together to deceive the other players, so Benoit and Helen work together to infiltrate the group. BUT, and this is the bit that really drives me wild, the endgame format of Among Us perfectly reflects the endgame of the film. The way to win Among Us isn’t necessarily a case of killing everyone or surviving every round - the way to win is by convincing your fellow players to believe you, and to vote accordingly.
During the trial Andi loses because the imposter - the billionaire impersonating a genius - convinces the other players that she should be voted out; she is as effectively thrown out of the airlock as she is the business, and then literally killed to protect the [fortune of] the “crew.”
But, Andi was not the imposter, and so the game continues.
The imposter kills again, and when Miles confesses to causing the lights to go out, this is another excellent hint - only the imposter can sabotage the lights!
Then, with all the characters assembled much like an “Emergency Meeting,” we reach the climax of the film: Miles burns the napkin evidence, and immediately the ensemble is back to the voting booth as Helen, like her sister, fights for the players’ support in voting out the imposter. Any Among Us player will recognise the infuriating feeling when you literally just saw them vent for the love of god you were all there vote them OFF- and that frustration - of speaking the truth and not being believed - is evident in this scene.
But these players don’t care about the truth; they care about surviving (ie staying rich), and so they will vote off an innocent person to placate the shark. Which is absolutely not how you win the game.
Then, then, the game’s final round: the imposter has lost his tools, is revealed for the useless fraud he is, and it’s when he has nothing left to offer the other players that one more vote is held - the characters literally raise their hands as they pledge their support to Helen, in part to give the appearance of swearing in upon the witness stand, but also in part to give the visual of a literal vote... such as that of an Among Us emergency meeting vote.
Tumblr media
And it’s when Miles is finally, rightfully ejected that at last, the game is won.
Among Us is a game of social engineering, of lying and convincing others of your lies to prolong your survival, deception, and the malleability of truth. Presenting this game in the opening of the film is more than a gimmick or scene-setter: it illustrates the social structures at the heart of the story.
TLDR: Among Us foreshadows the film’s premise, but also plot twists, character choices, and significantly the film’s resolution by way of group vote.
