“In the case of socialism, I would also point here to George Washington Woodbey, a Baptist minister and African American socialist who was born a slave in Tennessee in 1854. His major goal was to make complex ideas surrounding socialism clear to large black masses. He was particularly credited for bringing his congregations to their feet in his sermons that were finished off with fiery orations on socialism. Not only did he make Afro-Christianity and socialism compatible, a stance he took the heat for from black and white socialists alike, he convinced Christian followers to use socialism to direct their lives and understandings of the world.69 The point is that African American rhetoric was right there from jump in African American commitment to socialism, right down to them “holy-rolling, bench-walking, spirit-getting, tongue-speaking, vision-receiving, intuitive-directing, Amen-saying, sing-song preaching, holy-dancing, and God-sending” sermons.”
