Missing you

Khalil Payne moved to Akashic Valley in order to protect Jennifer, the love of his life. He feared relapsing into painkiller and killing the Pierce family. Here he had no friends, no family, no home. At least here he was far from Freeland.

He had tried to forget Jennifer Pierce, the girl he loved and left behind. He had tried to erase the memories of their time together, the kisses, the laughs, the promises. He had tried to convince himself that he was better off without her, that she deserved someone who wasn't a monster. But he couldn't forget her. He couldn't stop thinking about her. He couldn't stop dreaming about her. He struggled daily to resist the temptation to go back to Freeland and see Jennifer and his friends there.

The only thing helping him resist this temptation is getting updates from TC during their monthly appointments. Where they try to remove the kill order in Painkiller.

Today was one of those appointments that resulted in failure as the previous ones were. To distract himself from the failure he asked TC for updates on everyone there. To which TC updated him on the new school program of robotics that he has enrolled in to better their chances of removing the kill order and his new girlfriend. When asked about Jennifer TC hesitated to tell him that she had moved on Connor Hawke, the son of the former Green Arrow, Oliver Queen.

He immediately hung up and went to his room. There he felt a surge of emotion, a mix of anger, jealousy, and longing. He couldn't believe that Jennifer had moved on and she was with someone who wasn''t him. He wanted to see her, to talk to her, to hold her. He wanted to tell her that he was sorry, that he still loved her, that he wanted to be with her.

But he knew he couldn't. He knew that if he approached her, he would put her in danger. He knew that Painkiller would try to kill her, or worse. He knew that he had to stay away from her, for her own sake. He closed his eyes and tried to sleep, but he couldn't. He saw her face in his mind, her smile, her eyes, her hair. He heard her voice in his ears, her laugh, her whisper, her scream. He felt her touch on his skin, her lips, her hands, her tears. He opened his eyes and looked at the ceiling. He felt a tear roll down his cheek. He whispered to himself, "I miss you, Jen. I miss you so much."

Danny took a deep breath, this was the third time. He has nothing against Black Lightning, and actually really looks up to the man. They were teamed up because Jefferson was good with kids and didn't get all overprotective the second something went south. But it was hard enough for Danny not to let himself fall into "protector mode" while in an intense fight, and having his team member throwing around lighting was making it so much harder not to go into a feral state.

But this was the third mission in a row. He'd understand, Jefferson was just that kind of guy, but damn if Danny didn't feel bad about it.

"Real quick," Danny said, raising his hand during the evening's briefing, "Can I be teamed up with someone else?"

There weren't a lot of people there, Batman wanted a small reconnaissance team, and the three other present members all exchanged surprised and confused looks.

"What? You don't like being teamed up with me?" Jefferson asked with a concerned look.

Danny stepped back a bit, rubbing his left arm, "I should have said earlier, like, way earlier, but it's - I just... uhm..."

"You can tell us anything," Batman prompted.

He dropped his head and while everyone gave him a moment, it stretched on almost too long before Danny blurted out, "It's nothing personal, I like hanging out with you, but I died by electrocution, so it's really hard for me to focus on the mission when I'm teamed up with someone with electrical powers or uses shock weapons. I thought it was fine and I could cope, but it's not and I don't think I can take it anymore. I'm sorry. I should have said something sooner, but it's just..."

"Fuck kid! Why didn't you tell us?" Metamorpho shouted.

Danny looked up and they were all staring at him. Jefferson in particular looked horrified, maybe even on the verge of tears. Even Batman had a rare moment of a obvious horror before quickly getting his face back under control.

"It's alright," Batman said, then turned to the computer, typing a memo into it, "You should have told us sooner, but we understand that's a hard thing to share."

Danny nodded, and looked at Jefferson, who still seemed to be reeling. "Again, I'm sorry I really should have told you specifically. It's embarrassing to be affected by it the way that I am."

"What the hell are you talking about?" Jefferson said, "I should be apologizing to you! How did I not notice it was making you uncomfortable? You di- how could it not affect you?""

He was breathing shakily and Danny threw his hands up, "No, see, that's part of why I didn't want to say anything. It's not that big of deal to deal with it every once in a while. But every time? Back to back like this is just too much to deal with. Between you and Nightwing almost hit me with a taser yesterday..."

"Phantom, thanks for telling us. We'll be more considerate when creating teams," Batman said, getting back to the mission, "It's not for a few more days, so we have time to workout different pairings. Is there anything else we need to know?"

Danny shook his head, "That's all I needed to share."

Batman nodded, "You need to tell us these things so we can help you. We don't send Superman against people who use kryptonite weapons, we won't send you against electrical villains."

"It's usually fine, though," Danny said, and while Batman nodded, Danny could feel that overprotectiveness he gets when working with kid heroes. Oh, he should have just kept quiet and dealt with it himself...

Danny knew that by joining the justice league that he would occasionally be called in to do missions and that was fine, he knew that it was a necessary thing. Where the problem lies however were the partners he got assigned with on the mission, and they themselves weren't really that hard to deal with either however, where the real problem with them lies is that for some reason all the heroes he gets paired up with either had lightning/electricity powers or mainly fought with electric weapons. And that's a really difficult, personal and uncomfortable issue to explain

ooo i dig this sm. The characters that I immediately thought of that would be really interesting to be with Danny in this situation: Static Shock, Shazam, or Kid Flash. How do you tell your partner that you are scared of them because you died via electrocution? Where do you even start? Danny doesn't know.
