Black and white warblers have an extra long hind claw, they also have heavier legs than other wood warblers.

BOTD: Black-and-white Warbler
Tumblr media
Photo: Andy Reago & Chrissy McClarren
"This bird is often a favorite warbler for beginning birders, because it is easy to see and easy to recognize. It was once known as the 'Black-and-white Creeper,' a name that describes its behavior quite well. Like a nuthatch or creeper (and unlike other warblers), it climbs about on the trunks and major limbs of trees, seeking insects in the bark crevices. It often feeds low, and nests even lower, usually on the ground."

Battle Royale
so you got submitted to a niche bird poll (A-2)
These birds all have more than a million sightings on eBird, what were you thinking submitting them to a dumb niche hipster poll??? Joking aside, these birds were definitely too popular to get into the poll itself. Please vote for your favorite here!

Genus: Mniotitla
Tumblr media
Black-and-white Warbler (Rhododendrites)
This genus gets its name from the way it forages, by picking at bark as they move up and down tree trunks. It literally means "moss plucking", but there may be an error in the way Mnioeis 'moss' is written- it could also be read currently as mnion, or 'seaweed'. As an interior forest bird with no love for coastal regions... that would be quite the mistranslation.
Black-and-whites forage more like nuthatches or treecreepers, moving along trunks and branches to glean bugs from their surface. Their song is fairly distinctive among warblers, and as some of the earliest and more prolific spring arrivals, they can be heard singing sooner too. Listen for the sound of a squeaky wagon wheel and it may be a local Black-and-white Warbler setting up his breeding territory.
