ANYWAY I FINALLY GOT A GOOD PICTURE OF A NORTHERN FLICKER TAKING OFF IN FLIGHT

I've been trying to since around late February or early March of last year, so almost as long as I've been doing this. I'm really fucking stoked about it.

I love all my BirdLadies, but this Northern Flicker might be my favourite one yet?!

To my fellow bird nerds: I did consciously choose to use the male markings because the red cap & fancy black face markings were too dramatique to pass up & this is definitely a thing that will happen again (because birds) - just consider the term BirdLady to be somewhat gender neutral (or at least gender non-conforming)!

(& yes, this pal is available in the upcoming shop update, tho it pains me a little to sell her!!)

northern flickers fell in love w this bird a couple of months ago when i saw one attack an ant hill with the most vicious pecking i've ever seen and it flew away when it had enough (it was amazing)

I keep track of intergrade Northern Flickers in my yard because I have so many I'm constantly tripping the ebird filter on the counts. Here are the individuals for this winter so far that I can distinguish.

Northern Flickers typically are either Red-shafted (North America west of the Rocky Mountains) or Yellow-shafted (North America east of the Rocky Mountains) but there's a large zone of overlap where they interbreed. The offspring are known as intergrades, not hybrids, because they're still the same species but a mix of subspecies types.
