the yellow warbler is one of the most widespread members of their genus; they are found throughout almost the entirety of north america along with a portion of south america. they primarily feed on insects caught in flight. their coloration varies by range; one subspecies, the mangrove warbler, has a reddish head, while most other yellow warblers lack this coloration. females are duller overall with more gray coloration.

today's bird is the yellow warbler!

coming back with a native bird i hold very dear to my heart (I LOVE WARBLERS!) i actually saw one for the first time the other day and i was SO EXCITED! i didn't have my camera on me so all i got was this crappy picture with my phone 😭

i decided to give him the chestnut cap seen on central american varieties simply because i think it's cute :0)

as for your yellow warbler fact!: they are often parasitized by brown-headed cowbirds (who isn't at this point?). when a cowbird parasitizes the nest, the warbler builds a new nest right on top of it, sometimes resulting in nests with up to six tiers!

Dad and child! These two Yellow Warblers were caught side by side while I was teaching a bird banding class in Maine in 2018. Yellow Warblers don't look so yellow when they've just jumped out of the nest and are testing their wings for the first time! So cute to see a portion of a family unit together. They got matching new jewelry before being returned to the bushes near where they were caught so they could continue on together.
