People who wanna redesign Alastor I’m gonna tell yall what I told the Cuphead fandom when they were whitewashing King Dice.

Watch these black centered movies that take place in the 1930s to get a glimpse at what black people were wearing in the 1930s. There’s the more accurate Harlem Nights and the less accurate but more accurate than Vivziepop is ever gonna be Idlewild and I even encourage you to use these films as inspo to rewrite Alastor’s backstory. Base outfits off of them and hairstyles, stories, idk just don’t bullshit it like Vivziepop aka doing three seconds of research

Harlem Nights is actually free to watch on YouTube or Pluto TV right now and I’m pretty sure you can pirate Idlewild even though it usually gets released for free on Tubi during black history month they even have great music examples that aren’t white centered that he probably would have liked and or listed to

And even when it’s occult stuff with Alastor I encourage you to check out the comic Bitter Root a comic that that takes place in the 20s instead of the 30s but it respectfully takes inspiration from African American culture and Voodou so it’s worth checking out

Point is if you’re looking for inspiration for your Alastor redraws and redesigns and rewrites and what nots, use these along with doing research

I’ve been playing Fallout New Vegas again so I decided I’d draw Bitter-Root and 10-of-Spades in Mspaint. I think all of camp McCarran is pretty cool in game.

Not super happy with how I drew 10-of-Spades, might retry drawing him later.

I've started reading Bitter Root comics and of course I have a new fictional crush

cabbagejournalss - this is another class assignment, we had to make a three panel narrative based on planet earth clips. my professor explained how bbc edits the footage to anthropomorphize animals and bump up the action and gave us a variety of scenes to choose from. i picked this clip below about crabs fighting for their lives to enjoy delicious algae so i could draw sea creatures.

i really liked the eel sketch i made when i was brainstorming this project. very cartoony, somewhat muppety, i really like how the mouth is shaped and the texture of the scales. i tried to get the crab in the same style but i don’t think i pulled it off.

now we must discuss the colors. i still kind of like it but this made me realize i'm probably better off working in grayscale. i have a better sense of the values and creating a sense of distance, and i am not a quitter but i need to reduce the number hours i spend hunched and agonizing over these assignments. i find myself dreading adding color when i work even if it’s not for class. it's not good for my body or mind or work ethic.

in crit, there was some confusion about why the landmasses change color in the last panel and whether it was the same space depicted in the previous panel. i made this change to emphasize the shock of the final moment. but the relationship between panels 2 and 3 is further muddled by the crab’s position and the tail in the distance, but suddenly the eel is there in panel 3 and the crab would have had to stay in the center to get eaten and wait i thought the eel was far away how did it get there so fast? i can’t deny these are good questions. let’s just go with “eel really big”

recently i read the fantastic comic bitter root for a graphic novel class and GOD!!! THE ART!!! moment i laid eyes on the first page i knew that look was exactly what i had been trying to achieve in this project- the brushy lineart and shadows, the vibrant color palette and textures, all of that is exactly what i want to be able to capture in my own art. bitter root is awesome please read it.

In the tapestry of history, we find

A bitter route intertwined,

A path that echoes with sorrow's sound,

Where bitter roots in our spirits are found.

In ancient times, this bitter root,

Was pulled from the ground, a healing pursuit,

For though its beauty graced the land,

Its power lay hidden, deep in the sand.

A plant of grace, with petals fair,

But beneath the surface, a secret to share,

For until it's uprooted, the root will grow,

A lesson for our spirits to truly know.

Just as the bitter root must be released,

So too must our spirits find inner peace,

To heal and let go of the bitterness within,

And allow new beginnings to gently begin.

For the bitter root, though beautiful and strong,

Can hinder our growth if it lingers too long,

So let us embrace the path of healing,

And find the strength to release bitter feelings.

In the bitter root's story we find,

A metaphor for the soul's design,

To uproot the bitterness, let it go,

And let our spirits flourish and glow.

So as we journey through history's lore,

Let the bitter route inspire us more,

To heal, let go, and find our way,

Towards a brighter, more peaceful day.

Now with the release of Coogler’s Sinner’s trailer that has a similar vibe, I realized it’s been loooonnnnggg time since any new news about a Bitter Root film has been announced.
