October, 25th 2023:
"I began to dawdle over breakfast during shift changes, asking both waitresses questions. After weeks of inquiries, they invited me to a demonstration, outside Kleinhan's Music Hall, protesting the Israeli war against Egypt and Syria. I was particularly interested in that protest. The state of Israel had been declared shortly before my birth. In Hebrew school I was taught "Palestine was a land without peo-ple, for a people without a land." That phrase haunted me as a child. I pictured ears with no one in them, and movies projected on screens in empty theaters. When I checked a map of that region of the Middle East in my school geography textbook, it was labeled Palestine, not Israel. Yet when I asked my grandmother who the Palestinians were, she told me there were no such people. The puzzle had been solved for me in my adolescence. I developed a strong friendship with a Lebanese teenager, who explained to me that the Palestinian people had been driven off their land by Zionist settlers, like the Native peoples in the United States. I studied and thought a great deal about all she told me. From that point on I staunchly opposed Zionist ideology and the occupation of Palestine. So I wanted to go to the protest. However, I feared the demonstration, no matter how justified, would be tainted by anti-Semitism. But I was so angered by the actions of the Israeli government and military, that I went to the event to check it out for myself. That evening, I arrived at Kleinhan's before the protest began. Cops in uniforms and plainclothes surrounded the music hall. I waited impatiently for the protesters to arrive. Suddenly, all the media swarmed down the street. I ran after them. Coming over the hill was a long column of people moving toward Kleinhan's. The woman who led the march and spoke to reporters proudly told them she was Jewish! Others held signs and banners aloft that read: "Arab Land for Arab People!" and "Smash Anti-Semitism!" Now those were two slogans I could get behind! I wanted to know who these people were and where they had been all my life! Hours later I followed the group back to their headquarters. Orange banners tacked up on the walls expressed solidarity with the Attica prisoners and the Vietnamese. One banner particularly haunted me. It read: Stop the War Against Black America, which made me realize that it wasn't just distant wars that needed opposing. Yet although I worked with two members of this organization, I felt nervous that night. These people were communists, Marxists! Yet I found it easy to get into discussions with them. I met waitresses, factory workers, secretaries, and truck drivers. And I decided they were some of the most principled people I had ever met..." Transgender Warriors (1996) Leslie Feinberg

This is a tempting parallel to draw, but it doesn’t tell a whole or accurate story.
The idea of autogynephilia isn’t just the idea that lesbian trans women transition because they think lesbianism is sexy so they want to be lesbians for sex reasons.
Autogynephilia is part of a larger sexological theory, dreamed up by a specific individual named Ray Blanchard, that there are two types of trans woman: the “homosexual transsexual”, who is male-attracted, and the “non-homosexual transsexual”, who exhibits autogynephilia - a sexual fetish for being a woman that’s also a romantic orientation toward oneself-as-a-woman that’s also a type of fantasy about female embodiment or crossdressing or doing traditionally feminine activities like having sex with men.
The theory of autogynephilia comes loaded with a bunch of other particular and nonsensical ideas, including but not limited to the idea of the “erotic target location error” and “erotic target identity inversion”, the idea that all erotic crossdressing fantasies are fantasies of being the gender one dresses as, and the idea that bisexuality in trans women is attributable to “meta-attraction” in which the women are not actually attracted to men but only to the sense of femininity that sex with men can grant them.
Blanchard and his associates J. Michael Bailey and Anne Lawrence have been responsible for propagating this concept of autogynephilia across numerous academic journals articles and multiple books over the past 34 years, including Lambda Award nominee The Man Who Would Be Queen.
The idea of gay trans men transitioning because they like BL
mostly manifests as the idea that young people who were assigned female at birth are experiencing a form of social contagion or susceptibility to media influence rather than a deep-set paraphilia (the way autogynephilia has traditionally been theorized),
has mostly emerged in a vernacular way inside of trans communities and as an explanation for offspring’s transgenderism by transphobic parents, rather than as a formal sexological concept (Blanchard didn’t pick up the torch on “autohomoeroticism” until something like 2018, well after trans people had been commenting on the idea for years), and
has not had the reach or impact the theory of autogynephilia has had.
It’s not the worst comparison in the world, but assuming 1:1 mirroring between the situation with autogynephilia and the situation with gay-tboys-are-just-doing-it-because-they-read-too-much-yaoi would produce a lot of incorrect assumptions about whichever the thinker is less familiar with.

I was thinking about the AM song "Old Yellow Bricks", the Wizard of Oz and the queer term "Friend of Dorothy" - and I found this interesting post from reddit, referencing Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" X
Wikipedia provides some interesting info on yellow-brick road and transgender characters which date back to the very first novels:
The precise origin of the term [Friends of Dorothy] is unknown. Some believe that it is derived from The Road to Oz (1909), a sequel to the first novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900). The book introduces readers to Polychrome who, upon meeting Dorothy's travelling companions, exclaims, "You have some queer friends, Dorothy", and she replies, "The queerness doesn't matter, so long as they're friends." There are numerous references to LGBTQ characters and relationships, including a possible innuendo about bisexuality – when Dorothy asks Scarecrow which way to go on the yellow-brick road he says, "Of course some people go both ways" – although it is unknown whether they were intentionally included. For instance, in a case that may be seen as changing gender identity, or being transgender, Ozma, while still an infant, the baby daughter of the former King Pastoria of Oz, was given to the witch Mombi of the North by the Wizard of Oz. Mombi transformed Ozma into a boy and called him "Tip" (short for Tippetarius) in order to prevent the rightful ruler of Oz from ascending to the throne. Thus, Ozma spent her entire childhood with Mombi in the form of the boy Tip, and had no memory of ever having been a girl. Later, Princess Ozma would be the ruler of the fictional land of Oz. Princess Ozma has been referred to as “one of the first transgender characters in literature." This storyline was revived in Emerald City (2017). X
And then, back in 2007, in a brilliant album talking about circuses and identity struggles, under a persona called Jackie Pantomime, Alex Turner put this particular song (possibly about a need to escape) just before the final track 505, which addresses the return to HOME...
AM @ Brit Awards 2007
I don't know whether Alex had Wizard of Oz in mind when writing Favourite Worst Nightmare (btw the album's title seems to perfectly describe Dorothy's journey!), but the subtle engagement with queer culture since that young age... this is exciting to say the least.
#and now i want tlsp to cover somewhere over the rainbow#alex turner#arctic monkeys#old yellow bricks#actually he is a friend of dorothy in the pic 🤭

Hi Sarah, I'm so excited to see your upcoming release. (Villainess deserve representation too!) I was rereading Love From Both Sides for the dozenth time - as one does - and I was wondering if you had any plans for a spin off with Adara and Natalie? Their story has so many uncharted possibilities, I'm dying to know more. And relatedly, we're gasping out here for more sapphic media that goes as hard as your work does 🥺
I'm sorry if this has been asked and answered before, I couldn't find anything in your archives. Thanks again for writing In Other Lands, a precious and rare delight. I hope you're having the bestest day with at least one friendly nuzzle from a puppy
Hey my love, Never be sorry for asking anything! This world is bettered by the questioners, and it’s a great compliment to me that you care.
As regards Adara and Natalie specifically, I couldn’t tell you. I’d love to write more in the In Other Lands world (about which more later) - but whether I could do a short story or a series of books would obviously change my answer. It’s not entirely up to me, but I definitely do have plans for Adara. She’s a foil for Elliot, and the kind of character I really like - one who I see treated shallowly in other media, when few people really are shallow. If there’s too much skimming the surface, I long to explore the depths. And with the depths come adventures. Thank you for your care!
I also thank you for being excited for Long Live Evil. Villains and villainesses do definitely deserve representation, and have long been beloved by me because they’re often complicated, witty because they see the world differently, and queer-coded. I was also thinking when writing it about the different ways audiences can come to a story, and using the same evidence how different people presume characters are (for example) straight or bisexual. And often the ending will be very uniformly heterosexual. But if you go into the story, and change its direction… Are the things you presumed true? Are the things characters presumed about themselves true? Would certain subtexts surface, and certain texts submerge? How do we influence art by engaging with it? Anyway, I am categorically not making any promises because that’s got me in trouble before. But it’s an ensemble story (I was inspired by the group dynamics and relationships, all given weight, of Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows) and these are some of my preoccupations when writing it. I hope you shall find much to enjoy.
In the meantime, if you seek sapphic media that goes hard, and Sappho knows we all do… The Jasmine Throne and the Oleander Sword by Tasha Suri - this series is a huge favourite of mine - and not just mine, it won the World Fantasy award. Its central f/f pairing features one party holding the other at knifepoint for fine reasons and they have a brilliant dynamic based on understandably conflicting ideologies and complicated family situations! I love it.
Thank you for a delight of a letter and your kind words. I write this being yelled at by a cat for skritches, which is pleasant as puppies. I wish you a beauteous day with animal companions of choice, with apologies I couldn’t answer more definitively!

Hello! I'm genderfluid I went searching for stuff on Rick Riordan after finding out he won a stonewall award on The Second Book from the Magnus Chase trilogy. I've read all of Riordan's books as a minor and, upon finding this stuff it's been disheartening to say the least. I'll come back, after doing some research on my own but I'm personally curious about how you feel about LGBTQIA+ representation in Riordan's books.
I want to lead with: if you feel as though the queer and trans representation in the series is not reflective of your experience, or worse, offensive in its depiction, then I am very sorry. I myself am a bisexual woman who was in a relationship with a woman for five years, so I know what it's like to feel like a depiction of your gender or sexuality is simply insufficient or downright offensive.
Your experiences of the representation in the series are valid, whether they be positive or negative. These are fundamentally very personal experiences, and it's rare that any media will ever be 100% representative of our lived experiences. It is completely okay to feel represented where others do not, or to feel let down by a depiction, even if others think on it favorably.
To that end though, I honestly can't comment in any meaningful way on the representation in the series, simply because I am out of touch with it. I never finished Magnus Chase or Trials of Apollo. Chalice of the Gods was basically fun fanfic in my brain, and I haven't read any Hero's of Olympus book cover to cover since they debuted, not 10+ years ago. The only series I regularly return to are the first five, which do not have any explicit queer rep.
There are posts on my blog from 2020 and earlier that are from a time when I was more in touch with the fandom, Rick, and the books, but alas that time has passed. In between when I was last active in this fandom and now, I have completed almost all of a PhD. So a lot of this just isn't in my brain anymore.
What is in my brain is how important Nico coming out in House of Hades was. I will never forget how it felt to see that leak, get the book, and flip right to the page to make sure it was real. It was groundbreaking and so important. It wasn't the first queer rep in a book for middle or high schoolers, but it didn't exist in a saturated market either.
When continually stands out to me about Rick is his willingness to learn, grow, and correct. Sure, I wish he did things right the first time. He probably should have had sensitivity readers for HoO, but it's nice that he did have them for ToA. I think he has proven to be willing to listen to fans and course correct when he needs to. He doesn't just rest of his representation laurels; he keeps trying to make the world more diverse. I think the TV show is a great show of that work as well.
But really at the heart of my inability to be overly critical of him is the reality that I fucking loved Harry Potter. I loved it so much. And I have other queer and trans friends for whom that series was their life. It was the favorite thing, it was their #1 fandom, it was everything to them in the way Percy Jackson is still everything to me. And all of us feel as though Harry Potter was taken from us by the rampant bigotry of JKR. The choice to disengage is obviously also political, but it feels so emotional first and foremost. I cannot separate art from the artist there, and that to me doesn't feel like a political statement; it feels entirely like an emotional one.
So when I think about Rick's efforts, flawed as they may be, all I can think is "There but for the grace of god go I," because if it was him succumbing to the black mold and becoming one of the four horseman of the rise of global fascism, I do not know how I would cope with the emotional loss of this series.
That's not to say that fans should not continue to hold him accountable or engage in dialogue with him. It's just me saying that I'm not the fan who's going to do that. I'm too old, too tired, too out of touch, and I need to finish this degree before it finishes me.

Astrid Thorne character of all time. Her "abridged" list of exes has 12 people on it. she wears sunhats. she DID kill a guy but it wasn't even relevant to the plot. she casually confessed to first-degree murder across the table from a private detective. no one ever brought it up again. she made out with said detective in front of their respective dates. her job title is Professional Muse. one of her exes wrote an entire poetry book about her being sexy and murderous. she sees a struggling artist, goes "is anybody going to fix that" and DOES NOT wait for an answer. she completely reinvents her personality for every new date, makes them win a bunch of awards in a fit of productivity, and then immediately dips. she has complicated opinions about oysters. she's even bisexual

The Lost Weekend (1944) by Charles R. Jackson Often seen as the seminal addiction memoir in American literature, the story is a semi autobiographical account of a five day binge of a writer named Don Birnam. The book has also been noted for having homosexual overtones with a strong implication that Don Birnam, just like Charles Jackson, is bisexual. The book was adapted into an Academy Award winning film starring Ray Milland and directed by Billy Wilder. The movie had a more optimistic ending and all inferences to homosexuality are omitted.

THE HOGWARTS CLASS OF 1978 - pt 13
REMUS LUPIN
Name - Remus Lupin
Blood status - Halfblood
Date of birth - 10th March 1960
House - Gryffindor
Academic achievements - Prefect
He fought in both wars as a member of the Order and the Advanced Guard before dying during the battle of Hogwarts with his wife, leaving his newborn son orphaned
Cannon
Was turned into a werewolf by Fenrir Greyback after his father said that werewolves "deserve nothing but death"
Despite their past prejudice, Remus grew up with loving parents
Remus failed to find employment after his education because of his affliction as a werewolf. However, James used his wealth to financially support him
By the time of Voldemort's downfall, Remus' mother had died but his father still lived. In between wars Remus refused to move back home, fearing that doing so would threaten his fathers "peaceful life" However, he still saw Lyall from time to time. which made his father happy
By the early 1990s, Remus was living in poverty, in a tumbledown semi-derelict cottage in Yorkshire
After his death he was awarded an Order of Merlín first class. He was the first werewolf ever to be awarded this title
The example of his life and death played an important role in lifting the stigma on werewolves among the wizarding society
Headcanon
Bisexual
Welsh
Imma go off cannon here so you'll have to bare with me
Remus had an older brother called Romulus. When the boys were young Hope and Lyall divorced but remained good friends. Hope then later got with her childhood friend Paris Meadowes, who was also a witch and had two daughters of her own, Dawn and Dorcas. The two women and their four children lived together above a pub they owned called "The Howelling Wolf"
Remus and Dorcas were childhood besties to step siblings and i love them
okay divergence from cannon over
I'm sorry y'all he loved chocolate and had to e biggest sweet tooth known to man
Remus was an average student until his third year, when during a Hogsmead visit Remus and his friends witness a werewolf being shunned from a shop that he was applying for a job at. Seeing how the werewolf was being treated made Remus realise that he would have to work twice as hard if he wants to make any sort of career for himself. Since that day he took school extremely seriously and prioritised his education
He always wanted to be a teacher
THE LITTLEST SPOON
Also has never had to live his life without forehead kisses and secretly never wants to
He hated Quidditch, literally every part of Quidditch he hated
He cried when he found out he made Prefect
He didn't care to keep his books in good condition. He would dog eat them, write in them, crack the spins and sometimes use them as coasters for his tea. So long as he could see the words he didn't care what they looked like
His family were good friends with Newt Scamander
His friends were James, Sirius, Peter, Lily, Mary and Dorcas. He didn't speak to anyone else unless he needed to
Despite this he did get along with the younger years after becoming a Prefect and although he was awkward at first Lily helped him be more confutable around them.
He never approved of Dorcas being friends with Regulus, Barty and Evan but didn't say anything because he didn't want to argue with her
This boy would avoid confrontation like it was the plegue. You could spit in his face and he'd thank you
Remus was sooooo desperate to not be seen like other werewolves. He knew that he secret would come out eventually deep down so he made it his job to make sure that nobody had any problems with him ever. He refused to get mad, would never argue back and bottled up every negative emotion he had

Parallel Universe of Alex's Speech when the Waterloo Emails got leaked.
From the book:
I am not ashamed to stand here today where presidents have stood and say that I love him, the same as Jack loved Jackie, the same as Lyndon loved Lady Bird. Every person who bears a legacy makes the choice of a partner with whom they will share it, whom the American people will hold beside them in hearts and memories and history books. America: He is my choice. Like countless other Americans, I was afraid to say this out loud because of what the consequences might be. To you, specifically, I say: I see you. I am one of you. As long as I have a place in this White House, so will you. I am the First Son of the United States, and I'm bisexual. History will remember us.
From the movie:
But there is another truth that's much simpler: I fell in love with a person who happens to be a man, and that man happens to be a prince. He has captured my heart and made my life immeasurably better. I love His Royal Highness, Prince Henry George Edward James Hanover-Stuart Fox. I hope one day we'll have the opportunity to be public our relationship on our own terms.
Both speech are beautiful and has the power of there own but the highlight on this two parallel is how Alex expressed his feelings for Henry to everyone 😭 and being brave to come out and fight for them and to their sexuality 🤧 this speeches needs an award

Top 10 books of 2023
My favourite books of 2023, in no particular order:
A House With Good Bones - T. Kingfisher I was so disappointed when this didn’t win the goodreads choice awards for horror of the year. It’s so creepy and unsettling but in a uniquely T. Kingfisher way that somehow manages to still be funny and kind of cozy.
Wyrd Sisters - Terry Pratchett Of all the Discworld books I read this year, this one was definitely my favourite. I feel like Pratchett started to find his stride in this one, which I noticed more reading chronologically. Also it’s a spoof of Macbeth, and I’m a sucker for anything with Macbeth jokes.
The Bone Season (10th Anniversary Revised Edition) - Samantha Shannon I’ve loved the Bone Season series ever since I binged it in 2021, but the first book always fell a little flat for me. This revised edition fixed all the problems I had with the original. Highly recommend if you’re looking for a really unique fantasy/dystopia.
A Day of Fallen Night - Samantha Shannon I love Priory of the Orange Tree, so I was a little hesitant about a prequel, but ADOFN somehow managed to surpass Priory. It’s a perfect high fantasy that spans many countries and characters, and features multiple sapphic characters, as well as bisexual, asexual, and other queer folks. This was my absolute favourite book of the year.
Stone Butch Blues - Leslie Feinberg One of the most important queer novels of the last 50 years. So glad I read this.
Tell Me I'm An Artist - Chelsea Martin This book found me at just the right time. It asks what it means to be an artist, and explores the intersections between the art world and privilege, and looks at the age old question; what is art?
Gideon the Ninth - Tamsyn Muir I am so late to the Locked Tomb hype, and I can’t believe it took me this long to pick up Gideon the Ninth! The Locked Tomb is quickly becoming one of my favourite fantasy series.
Heartstopper Volume 5 - Alice Oseman I waited all year for this instalment of the Heartstopper series to come out, and I devoured it in one day. Alice Oseman's work is always beautiful and heartfelt, and Volume 5 of Heartstopper is no exception.
The Well of Ascension - Brandon Sanderson I dipped my toes into Sanderson's work for the first time this year, and I started with the Mistborn series. While the prose is not the most complex, the characters and setting are what truly drew me in. So far, The Well of Ascension is my favourite of the trilogy.
Nettle and Bone - T. Kingfisher I read six T. Kingfisher books this year, with the first one being Nettle and Bone, and it's still one of my favourites. A weird dark fairytale with goblin markets, a quest to kill a prince, grave witches, an evil puppet, and a chicken possessed by a demon. What else could you want?

Quick & Easy Tarot Card Meanings (Yes, All 78)
The Modern Phrasal approach is a novel method of learning tarot.
It queers older card meanings by applying them to a wider context of human life.
Each phrase is built for modern concerns, attention spans, and situations.
I developed the Modern Phrasal Approach during my twenty-two years of tarot study.
Temperance Queer Tarot, my tarot service for queers, feminists, and leftists, has been in operation for the past twelve years.
The Modern Phrasal Approach also comes out of my lifelong work as a poet. I hold an MFA in Creative Writing from Columbia University.
SLINGSHOT, my first book of poems, won several awards. It also reminded me of the importance of the phrase to language.
The primacy of the phrase is what poetry understands better than all other forms of writing.
The Modern Phrasal Approach combines tarot, storytelling, and poetry to paint a picture of possible futures.
You may notice that there are no reversed card meanings.
This is because the reader is intended to read reverse as a return to the unlearned lessons of the previous card.
That is the best method of reversal reading for this system. Of course, you may elect not to read reversals at all.
Ok, let’s go!
