God damn I'm no longer taking small shots
I'm chugging straight from the bottle
And I've been drinking since 4pm
And it's 5am now
I shouldn't have alcohol
But if I didn't then I'd be clinging to other vices
Like cigarettes
Like weed
And worst of all like pills
I don't want to get back into that again
And I just got a new prescription to make it even more irresistible
But I haven't thought about taking pills and drinking tonight like I normally would
Is that progress?
It's definitely something though

Fumare marijuana in età avanzata favorisce l'infarto
Tumblr media
Read the full article

TF2 Mercs on Your Birthday! TF2 x M!Reader (platonic or romantic)
Scout
Super excited when you tell him your birthday and throws a big(for Scout, anyway.) party with streamers, haphazardly iced cupcakes, and a small little boombox with a mixtape for you!
Tried to make you a cake but fucked up a little bit, so he turned the non burnt parts into cupcakes.
He really does mean well- really! He was so excited to hear about your birthday since you two are kind of close in age! What? You're older than him by a decade! Doesn't matter to him!
Soldier
PICKS YOU UP AND PARADES YOU AROUND LIKE THE BIRTHDAY BOY YOU ARE STAND UP MAGGOTS AND SALUTE THE BIRTHDAY BOY!!!!
Since you and him get on like a house on fire, he gets you a cake and formally celebrates your birthday
As soon as you two start drinking he starts sobbing about how he's known you and doesn't let go of you
Pyro
This video fr
this motherfucker is so fuckin EXCITED for you. They're majorly bouncy and gifting you the best drawings/plushies
Tries his best to stay lucid the entire day. but the stress of trying to make sure your birthday is amazing
Heavy
Doesn't do much for your birthday, but does little things for you throughout the day like sharing with you, joking with you, etc.
He'll tell you happy birthday and buy you a beer at the end of the night as a gift.
Maybe a little handknit scarf or something.
Demoman
HAAAAAPPY BIIIIRTHDAY TOOOO YOUUUUUUUUU
I hope you like bingedrinking and movie watching because he got the day off for both of you and none of those hours are going to be spent sober.
Goes on a rant about how much he loves you and cares deeply about you at like, 5 PM. then falls asleep on your shoulder.
Engineer
Treats your birthday like every other day- after all, he doesn't know how you feel about your birthday.
If you ask for something nice or drop hints that it is your birthday, he'll cook you a nice dinner and make you a little doohickey.
Asks to spend the evening with you just sitting and shooting the shit with you.
Sniper
A lot like Engineer, doesn't bring it up unless you do. He doesn't know if your birthday is a rough day for you so he's not going to ask unless you say something first.
If you're privvy to something though, he'll run into the gas station and get you your favorite candy as a little gift.
Offers to go hunting with you to "Get'cha away from the loud crowd for a bit."
Spy
If he likes you, there will be a bottle of fancy wine at your room's door with a birthday note attached, but he won't mention that it's him(but he will comment about how that bottle must have cost a fortune)
He's the more strong silent type, but if people keep bothering you about things then he'll be your dashing rogue and sweep you away to his smoking room where he'll offer you a marijuana cigarette and some whiskey.
"Why? It's your birthday, after all. Those buffoons give me a headache."
Medic
Probably forgets your birthday, and at your next doctor's appointment when he goes over your file, you correct him and say how old you are, he goes "Oh! Happy birthday!" and continues on.
Secretly he's sad that he missed your birthday and gets you a cupcake or something sweet as a late birthday gift.
hums "happy birthday to you" while operating on you for about a few days.

Freedom & Corruption, Ep 8
Inspired by @ranchthoughts’ post discussing boundaries and crossing those boundaries, I was thinking about the ways these characters interpret the idea of “freedom." That intersection creates an interesting contrast for the core characters.
Ray, Mew, and Alcohol
For Top and Mew, the idea of freedom is especially interesting given their differences in lifestyle. Top has maintained a level of sexual promiscuity—freedom, if you will—that Mew has rejected for much of his adult life. The same goes for drug habits. Mew, then, comes across as a character so deeply entrenched in his own values that his idea of “freedom” varies significantly from other characters.
What’s interesting is that in his current state of bitterness, Mew seems to crave this idea of “freedom” that he’s witnessed in other characters, most notably Ray. But I think Mew knows intrinsically that Ray drinking himself into oblivion only gives the appearance of freedom—it is far from it. If anything, I’d argue Ray’s habits are the greatest sign of his lack of freedom; he’s bound to alcohol and drugs. They’re restricting his freedom, yet Mew desires Ray’s lifestyle to let go. That’s the terrible irony of drugs and alcohol—what starts as freedom from pain can bind one to it permanently; a temporary freedom becomes a permanent dependence. Mew knows this, and he desires the temporary escape, even as he knows that Ray himself has gone far beyond the temporary. I don’t think Mew is scared of forming that same dependency because he’s confident in his own control in a way that Ray never has been.
Mew has something of a superiority complex, at least compared to Ray, and it’s informing their current dynamic just like their old one. Mew is giving in to Ray’s habits, but he hasn’t fallen to Ray’s level yet—not truly. Top and Cheum fear the same thing happening to Mew that happened to Ray, when that freedom becomes destructive (more on that below).
Ray and Sand
If Ray is bound to this corruptive lifestyle, then his freedom is reasonably limited. He couldn’t control what happened to his mother anymore than he can control what is happening to him (or so he believes...I think the belief that he has no control does more damage than his actual lack of control). So where does he have control? Where can he find freedom? Sand.
“When I’m with you, I’m so damn happy.”
^This happiness is the temporary relief Ray seeks in alcohol, even as it is corrupting him. But Sand doesn’t have any of those same destructive side effects. Sand is a healthy escape. Sand, in many ways, represents freedom from the pain Ray is facing. Ray wants to establish control over the freedom Sand offers, because control over Sand is ultimately much more attainable than control over his other form of escape: drugs/alcohol.
Top and Cheum
@waitmyturtles addresses this in excellent detail here, but I wanted to include Top and Cheum’s perspectives on freedom versus corruption here. They immediately see Mew’s behavior as the latter, which I find especially ironic for Top, given that he drinks and does drugs himself. If it was someone else in the group, like Boston or even Cheum, I think we would not see this same reaction. Mew has expressed such disapproval of bingedrinking and drug use that the other characters immediately react negatively to his interest in it.
I don’t want to say they’re invalid for showing concern, because it is concerning to see a friend with such rigid values reject those values completely; however, the way they go about it is encroaching on Mew’s freedoms. Inviting Top to Mew’s party was a low blow from Cheum, and I still can’t fathom why she thought that was a good idea.
I'm still pretty new to the squad, but I touched on the concept of ephemerality and permanence, so I’m going to tag the ephemerality squad here! :) @slayerkitty @ranchthoughts @chickenstrangers @lurkingshan @twig-tea @distant-screaming @clara-maybe-ontheroad @neuroticbookworm @elizabethsebestianhedgehog @waitmyturtles

I went on vacay and got drunk a lot last week and have been feeling mentally slow for days. What happened inside of my head?
PET scans prove that endorphins bind to opiate receptors which cause those good feels from getting drunk. Since endorphins act on the opiate receptors in our brains, they reduce pain and boost pleasure, resulting in a feeling of well-being – in evolutionary terms, we developed endorphins to help fuel us bit by bit when hunting game or collecting food. An interesting connection to make here is that this is also why we feel good when we exercise – yes, we all know the answer is endorphins; But, the fascinating aspect is why we developed them: if it weren’t for the release of endorphins during our primitive human stages, we would not have been able to push ourselves to search for food when hunger and exhaustion set in.
But I digress,
What’s going on in the brain?
Alcohol stops the chemical signals between neurons which causes an immediate result of intoxication. Intoxication includes feelings, which we’re all familiar with, such as:
-impulsivity
-slurred speech
-poor memory
-sluggish reflexes
This happens because the functions of the occipital lobe (responsible for visual processing) temporal lobe (responsible for processing auditory perception,) and frontal lobe (does a bunch of different stuff, but primarily considered the emotional control center and home of our personality) all experience temporarily decreased capability and strength. The parietal lobe (which processes sensory information) also becomes impaired which leads to a disruption of fine motor skills and reaction time. We’ve all had a night or two that we can’t quite remember – this happens because the hippocampus, the brain region that helps make new memories, is unable to function correctly on alcohol and thus results in temporary loss of (new) memory. Essentially, alcohol obstructs the capabilities of many different parts of your brain while also damaging neural brain pathways– ultimately causing you to feel disoriented, confused and even sick.
However, in the long term our brains adapt to the blocked signals by overcompensating once alcohol leaves the system. It does this by continuing to over-activate neurotransmitters which can cause painful withdrawal symptoms (hello hangovers) which can damage brain cells. This type of brain damage is exasperated by drinking binges or sudden withdrawals.
In the long run, brain matter will also become damaged from heavy alcohol consumption in the form of “brain shrinkage” which is a reduction of cell bodies and cell pathways (gray matter and white matter.) Clusters of gray matter in a brain have been thought to show the intelligence of a particular individual, with a higher concentration of gray matter showing greater intelligence. For example, when Albert Einstein passed away his brain was studied and proved to show very high concentrations of gray matter – this stuff is important, take care of it!
The prefrontal cortex, responsible for the “higher functions” of cognitive processing (such as problem solving, impulse control) are most vulnerable to damage – so alcohol-related issues tend to be more serious once they affect this part of the brain. This is also why we hear that teenagers should not drink: their frontal lobes are still developing and are sensitive to any damage. Interestingly so, cognitive deficits are heightened by malnutrition- especially when a deficiency of vitamin B is present. (Side note, apparently this is a very common deficiency in alcoholics. If you’re a heavy drinker, talk to your doctor about taking a high vitamin B supplement.)
Alcohol remains in your urine for about 80 hours and will be found in your hair follicles for as long as three months.
Did my glass of wine make me dumb?! Our brains are incredibly plastic. In simple terms this means that our brains are constantly adapting to our surroundings and are a very living thing. The good news is that if started in time, abstaining from alcohol can actually reverse most of the physical damage caused by hard core drinking.
For most people, your brain can heal – just make sure you actually give your brain a break from booze. BUT! Keep in mind, studies have shown that relapsing into heavy alcohol consumption (think binge drinking) will reverse the regeneration and healing that occurred after a period of abstinence. In very heavy users, most valuable cognitive improvements begin after a full year of alcohol abstinence.
Long story short: never binge drink – and if you must, say for a birthday or celebration, then give yourself a long time to heal and detox.
