KOSA is a national bill in the USA getting ever closer to passing. This bill is not being thoroughly discussed, but is still passing through voice votes. This bill has a lot of important parts in it that are not properly defined, which would make it very easy for major Tech Companies to abuse it, especially by attacking marginalized communities with it. We all know many communities typically discriminated against, are home to people, especially youth, who face mental health problems and/or abuse. This bill could cause tech companies to censor content that gives support to at risk people, whether out of fear or purposeful discrimination against such people. KOSA as it is could cause an incredible amount of harm, and not just to ones who live in the USA. Companies would likely censor content that could be considered "controversial" in any place there content is seen, not just the US. Suicide rates among marginalized communities have shown to be considerably higher than that among the general population time and time again. If KOSA passes, I believe it is extremely likely that the current suicide rate will rise even higher, especially among youth. KOSA would also result in many challenges for small businesses, as they would have to navigate through the legal walls and censorship that will be placed in front of them. Politicians have tried to threaten big companies, especially tech companies, for many years and KOSA has been made with similar purpose. Small businesses could very easily be caught in a tug-of-war they do not have the ability to navigate correctly.

The government is meant to help and protect civilians, but have proven to do the opposite many times before. WE have a voice, and it is not too late to use it! There are some politicians who want to and have listened to us before, we just need to keep telling them.

Steve sighs for the umpteenth time, wondering why in the hell he should have been born as the only son of Richard and Margaret Harrington and being used as a test subject for their latest crazy idea.

Being the owner of a big pharmaceutical company they were always eager to show Steve what they had come up with, especially when their last invention was a machine that was able to predict who your soulmate was: all you had to do was give a tiny drop of blood to the machine and it would have found your perfect match.

That is the spot that keeps going on the television in the waiting room, and now Steve is sitting in a waiting area, ready to be pinched and find his soulmate. Not that he was really looking forward to it, but his girlfriend just broke up with him and his mum was adamant that the machine would have found Steve's perfect match avoiding more suffering, and in the end, Steve has agreed to be a test subject.

“It will be ok.” his mother tells him while lifting the collar of his shirt.

They aren’t allowed to test the machine on a minor without the parents' approval so Steve is going to be the first minor tested “You don’t have to worry, the machine will find the perfect match for you, isn’t that what everyone wants?” his mother asks him, before gently pushing him toward a nice nurse and Steve suppresses the desire to ask her if she has taken the test and if his father is actually her soulmate or not. He probably is not, Steve already knows that since the first time that his father punched the door and his mother threw him a few plates.

"If your soulmate has ever been to a hospital, the machine can match their blood results with yours and give us a name." the nurse is saying to Steve while she helps him on the examination table.

"Mum says it only has data from the USA." Steve states monotone, while he tries to keep his mind focused and not worry about what would happen if his soulmate is from another country or even worse, dead.

The smile on the nurse's face falters a little "That's true, but I'm confident that a young boy like you will find the proper match in no time." she insists, pinching his finger and putting the data in the machine.

He thanks her and goes back to the waiting area where his parents are waiting for him and the three of them stare at the numbers on the screen looking at the countdown and waiting for the number one, followed by a name, but the machine doesn't stop at one.

It stops at zero.

No match.

This could mean that either Steve's soulmate has never been to a hospital, and that’s why there are no records to match, or that he is not from the USA, or… that he is not alive anymore.

It’s not bad, he doesn’t even know their name so he can’t mourn someone that he never knew, right?

"I'm sure that's a mistake, honey, you can retake the test when you want." his mum assures him.

He takes the test another three times, always with the same result: zero.

Steve’s parents have become even richer thanks to the technology of the soulmating machine; somehow people are willing to know who their true soulmate is and it doesn’t matter if some family broke after they get the result, they keep going to the center and being tasted again, and again, and again.

Steve doesn't believe in soulmates anymore, and when Dustin asks him if he should be tested to know if Suzy is his soulmate Steve firmly denies him access telling him that he is far too young and that it doesn’t matter the name of a stupid machine, what matter is how he feels and if he loves Suzy that’s more than enough.

Dustin doesn’t seem convinced but he doesn’t ask again to be tasted and Steve takes it as a win, at least until he receives a call from a crying Dustin.

“There was an accident.” the kid says between the tears “Eddie was driving, then a dog appeared from nowhere and Eddie tried to avoid it and we crashed.”

“Are you ok?” Steve asks worriedly, already taking his car keys and his jacket.

“The ambulance came and they brought us to the hospital. My mum is at work and I didn’t know who to call.”

“You did good Dustin, don’t worry I’m coming to get you.” Steve replies, trying to calm the kid.

“But Eddie…”

“He will be ok. I’m sure he will.”

“You haven’t seen him. He had blood all over his face…” Dustin continues while Steve gets in the car and continues to talk to the boy until he finally gets to the hospital; Dustin is still on his phone, talking to Steve who is just a few feet away, when he sees him he lets the phone drop and runs toward him, hugging him tight.

Steve holds him until the kid stops crying, and then they go to ask for some information from the staff.

“He has no health insurance.” someone tells him and Steve throws a platinum card with his name in big bold letters “Now he does.” he states and then comes back to Dustin. Steve doesn’t really like Eddie, he is a little bit jealous, to be honest, but he is Dustin’s friend and Steve’s family has so much money that paying for Eddie’s care is not a problem.

“Come with me.” he says to Dustin “I know for sure that the cafeteria has the best hot chocolate ever.”

The hot chocolate comforts Dustin enough that he finally falls asleep on Steve’s shoulder. The boy calls Claudia, telling her that they are at the hospital, that Dustin is fine, but that he has to wait to have news about their friend, and the woman gets to the hospital as fast as she can “Are you sure you want to stay here? We don’t know how long it will take to have any information.” Claudia asks Steve before waking up Dustin but Steve nods “Someone has to stay until his uncle arrives and Dustin already had a difficult day.”

The woman nods and after a few complaints, Dustin agrees to go back home, promising that he will be back in the morning.

Steve nods and finally goes to grab a coffee at the coffee machine; he has just pushed the button when his phone starts to vibrate and he tiredly takes a look at the notifications: it’s the soul-matching app.

He got a match.

His name is Eddie Munson.

The future of innovation and efficiency that many governments and private companies dream of runs into ecological and geopolitical limits. But AI does not rely on raw materials only during the construction of its physical infrastructures; it does so throughout its cycle. For instance, data centres and servers need large amounts of water to cool down. According to a study published in Nature in 2021, Google and Microsoft declared using respectively 15.8 billion and 3.6 billion litres of water. We don’t know if these numbers are trustworthy. As a telling example, Microsoft has been involved in a scandal regarding the water expenditure of one of its data centres in the Netherlands. Whereas the technology company declared to the Dutch authorities that the centre consumed between 12 and 20 million litres, it transpired it was actually consuming 84 million. Meanwhile, in August 2022, Thames Water announced reviewing the water expenditure of data centres in London due to the drought scenario the capital faced that summer. While the average annual cooling system consumption of a small data centre in the US is estimated to be 25 500 000 litres, that of a person in Nigeria is 12 410 litres – 2 000 times less. AI is also energy intensive. The more data to be analysed, the higher the energy consumption. More sophisticated algorithms, which need long computational time, consume even more. For example, it is estimated that training an algorithm to automatically produce text uses 190,000 kWh; that is, 120 times more than the average annual consumption of a household in Europe in 2020. To generate this energy, raw materials such as organic matter, uranium, coal or water, among others, are again needed. Although some of the big tech companies claim that their energy is produced sustainably, the data shows another trend. In 2019, Greenpeace published a report about an Amazon Data Centre in Virginia (USA), which is considered to be one of the most important in Amazon’s global infrastructure. Greenpeace warned against the important growth in energy consumption in the region due to this data centre’s activities. Despite Amazon’s pledge to invest in “green” energy for this data centre, the reality is that its investment in fossil fuels has increased shamelessly. In 2021, data centres were estimated to consume 0.9-1.3% of global electricity demand. Given AI’s high energy consumption and the current energy crisis, the techno-optimistic dreams of governments and Silicon Valley’s companies could be dashed by the high price of energy.

Most Americans don’t even realize that virtually all of their personal information has been stolen and posted online for free.  The personal records of 2.9 billion people were stolen from a major data broker known as National Public Data earlier this year, and this month almost of the information that was stolen was posted online for anyone to freely take.  We are talking about names, addresses, phone numbers, employment histories, birth dates and Social Security numbers.  This is one of the most egregious privacy violations in the history of the world, but hardly anyone knows what has happened.  So please share this article as widely as you possibly can.

USA Today is reporting that the original theft of this data occurred “in or around April 2024″…

An enormous amount of Social Security numbers and other sensitive information for millions of people could be in the hands of a hacking group after a data breach and may have been released on an online marketplace, The Los Angeles Times reported this week. The hacking group USDoD claimed it had allegedly stolen personal records of 2.9 billion people from National Public Data, according to a class-action lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, reported by Bloomberg Law. The breach was believed to have happened in or around April 2024, according to the lawsuit.

The company that this data was stolen from is a Florida-based background check company known as National Public Data.  The following is what Wikipedia has to say about this particular firm…

Jerico Pictures, Inc., doing business as National Public Data[1][2] is a data broker company that performs employee background checks. Their primary service is collecting information from public data sources, including criminal records, addresses, and employment history, and offering that information for sale.

Of course there are hordes of other data brokers out there these days.

They collect vast troves of information on as many people as they possibly can, and then they monetize that information in various ways.

Equifax, Epsilon and Acxiom are the three largest data brokers in existence today.  Each one of them brings in more than 2 billion dollars of revenue annually.

As you can see, collecting and selling our personal information is very big business.

And when one of these data brokers gets hacked, it is a major disaster for all of us.

PERSONALITY

Well, that until Wraith gave her and Luke a mission which involved a remain of Carabalí's web. Everything almost went south and he watched her snapping...if he ever says something about that mission it would be: "when our Captain snaps, run and pray for your damned life if you are the objective of her fury".

BIOGRAPHY

Born in Arlington, Texas, as the middle sibling of three. Always active, curious and excited for everything around her, specially stories. At first she thought of become a historian, since she had a insatiable appetite for knowledge...al least until meeting her uncle Gabriel. In despite that her mother wanted her not to hear the stories about the guerrillas or cárteles, she never stopped and decided that once she was old enough she'll enlist.

And so she did. Everyone thought it just would be forgotten once she finished high school, but when the time came...Alicia went to the recruit office. To be honest, not even her Drill Sergeants thought she'd last enough, and they tried to became her life a living hell. More than desmotivate her, it just hurted her pride and made her want to prove them wrong.

'Blood, sweat and tears' is what she always said when someone ask how she got so respected. And is not far from the truth, during her whole career she has gained their men trust and that's what got her the loyalty of all their man. So after some years her rank became 'Lieutenant' and was assigned to the Task Force 267 where Captain Reyes was his officer in command.

She met Edward during a mission on the Middle East, and from then passed five years until the next time they would see eachother. During that time she became a Captain as well and the Task Force was under her command...until the mission in Angola, given the name 'Operation Firewall'. That was the last mission for said Task Force.

Alicia never says anything about that mission, but what's known is that all of them were captured and interrogated, and that she is the last survivor. Her mind after that day was cracked due to the torture, physical and mental, as well that her body was scarred. But testimonies of the recon team assigned to investigate that place say something about that day.

Nothing gave indications of a fight when they arrived, on the contrary, it was silent. A silence of death. Because there wasn't a fight, it was something else. The only thing they heard was steps, Alicia's steps, and she emerged from inside.

She was covered in blood, the face almost destroyed, part of her skin burnt beyond recognition, the arms with cuts to the bone and the eyes...her eyes were something far from human in that moment. If she was respected before, after that time in Angola and see Carabalí's head in her hand, she was feared. And she was transported to the near military base, where no word was said until later.

The Captain was put on temporary leave until given the psychiatric permission, and so she was driven to her family home. For three months she was unable to recieve, or refrained herself, human touch and all her family knew something changed deep down. There was only one time where her mother tried to touch her by surprise during a moment of disociation, and the look on her daugther's eyes froze her blood. It was necessary that her military uncle tackled her before an accident would have occured.

A year passed before the permission was given and then she went back to Camp Pendelton to do administrative duties, and that remained for a year before Wraith contacted her. A new team was made under Alicia's and Dominique's command, created for infiltration, elimination and sabotage missions, the codename was 'Specters'. Every soldier was picked by Alicia.

They still on active service and since the start of the team another five years have passed. She stills on command of the team.

Her combat style is mostly focused on quickness, strength and agility. As she needs to be moving every moment in the fight, as well she needs a weapon that doesn't get lost if the grip loosens a bit.

Becuase of that, her main choice weapon is a karambit (filipin combat knife).

TRIVIA

-She'll never admit to anyone except Luke that she wanted to do a degree before enlisting. Even if that was her plan, during the moment she was required to present her application to university the economic situation of her family wasn't the best. And so she decided to enlist right away to give Camila the opportunity to go and study. No one knows except Luke and they have long conversations about all kind of topics since she got the old books of her siblings.

-When off duty, she pass the time on the ranch, riding and helping her parents. But sometimes travel to visit her boys, mostly Alexander's family bakery and Luke's home. Also loves driving around the state and even goes to others when is able.

-Her car is a '67 black Chevy Impala that her grandpa gave her. She couldn't help but laugh once she learned about Supernatural and the Winchester's car, mostly because Elijah and Francis were really excited the first time they saw the car. From day to day she take some of the boys to a ride, and has heard that they fight for the turns.

-The first callsign she had was because a vigilance shift. Normally the soldiers started slacking at some point during matutine shifts, but when was her turn, everyone compared her to a statue. Then someone said she looked like a stone guardian from old tales and the word spread, next she knew, everyone was calling her "Guardian".

-Her favorite drink is coffee, her grandma gave it to her since she was a little girl. And her favorite food is Ajiaco, she has fought her siblings just to get seconds.

-The smell of sandal help her to relax and she doesn't have an explanation of why. It just bring her back to better times, that's enough. Normally has a candle inside her office, and her hand soap also smell like it, she's even considering get some incense.

UK Home Secretary sounds alarm over deepfakes ahead of elections

Criminals and hostile state actors could hijack Britain’s democratic process by deploying AI-generated “deepfakes” to mislead voters, UK Home Secretary James Cleverly cautioned in remarks ahead of meetings with major tech companies. 

Speaking to The Times, Cleverly emphasised the rapid advancement of AI technology and its potential to undermine elections not just in the UK but globally. He warned that malign actors working on behalf of nations like Russia and Iran could generate thousands of highly realistic deepfake images and videos to disrupt the democratic process.

“Increasingly today the battle of ideas and policies takes place in the ever-changing and expanding digital sphere,” Cleverly told the newspaper. “The era of deepfake and AI-generated content to mislead and disrupt is already in play.”

The Home Secretary plans to urge collective action from Silicon Valley giants like Google, Meta, Apple, and YouTube when he meets with them this week. His aim is to implement “rules, transparency, and safeguards” to protect democracy from deepfake disinformation.

Cleverly’s warnings come after a series of deepfake audios imitating Labour leader Keir Starmer and London Mayor Sadiq Khan circulated online last year. Fake BBC News videos purporting to examine PM Rishi Sunak’s finances have also surfaced.

The tech meetings follow a recent pact signed by major AI companies like Adobe, Amazon, Google, and Microsoft during the Munich Security Conference to take “reasonable precautions” against disruptions caused by deepfake content during elections worldwide.

As concerns over the proliferation of deepfakes continue to grow, the world must confront the challenges they pose in shaping public discourse and potentially influencing electoral outcomes.
