Union Carbide's Value
The images of this article are ads. They’re ads for a company called Union Carbide, which proudly promoted themselves through the 50s and 60s for the way their chemical plants and development projects were capable of transforming the world. They could bring pesticides to your community, kill the bugs and help you be self-sustaining as a culture, a promise they started in South America, and then made a big, active push to start doing in India.
These ads are now, absolutely unhinged to look at, not just in the 1960s put-your-whole-butt-into-the-project industrial futurism represented by the hands of a vast white man reshaping the world to his wants, but they become even more messed up when you understand what this company wound up doing, and who it wound up hurting, because of its choices.
Content Warning: I’m going to talk about the Union Carbide gas leak disaster in Bhopal, India. It is an incident in which a lot of people were exposed to a dangerous chemical that killed and injured a lot of them (a lot). I’m not going to go into grisly detail and I don’t intend to go in-depth on the process of the accident.
Spoiler Warning: The bad guy is capitalism, again.
In 1984, a pesticide plant built and maintained by a company called Union Carbide India Limited, which was, coincidentally, 50.9% owned by the American company Union Carbide and Carbon Corporation, suffered a catastrophic gas leak that released a chemical agent known as methyl isocyanate (MIC) over the towns around the plant.
This chemical is colourless but has a sharp, pungent odour, which is useful for detecting it as it creeps into your system. One of the things this chemical does that I didn’t know there was a term for was that it’s a lachrymatory agent, which if you recognise that word, you know it because it’s a thing cops throw at you. MIC is not the agent in tear gas, but it’s the same kind of thing that aggravates the eyes and tear ducts. This stuff is safe only up to a volume of .004 ppm, or ‘parts per million’ – a very small amount. You can’t smell it until it hits 5 ppm, at which point it’s gotten real dangerous in how it messes with your body, particularly your nerves.
Notably, MIC is heavier than air, meaning that it crept along the ground as it leaked from the plant, which just so happens to have made it really dangerous to anyone who was low down to the ground compared to standing up, such as children or people sleeping on or near the ground.
Union Carbide’s leak happened at night.
Bonus: It’s flammable.
Arranged around the Bhopal plant were a variety of towns that were made up of people who were there to work for the plant or serve the people who were working for the plant, and of course, their families, which included elders and children. The population around Bhopal was hard to precisely quantify (the central government not being one with a ton of perfect information), but the estimates put it at around 500,000 people living in these spaces who were exposed to the MIC.
Note: That’s not ‘how many people, total, were there.’ That’s how many people the estimates are confident were exposed.
This is one of the reasons why the Union Carbide gas leak in Bhopal is regarded as the worst industrial accident in history.
This is one of those stories that I feel are well-known if you know anything about it at all; you’re either a very normal person whose experience of massive national industrial disasters is about the things you’ve seen in the news or mentioned in other media, or you’re like me and you pay attention to podcasts or Youtube channels or books about how some things went catastrophically wrong somewhere or other, in a sequence of texts that seems to present the idea that maybe capitalism is just bad at taking care of people, weird, I’m sure there’s no particular reason for that.
When it comes to large-scale disasters, especially given its potential environmental impact and recent TV series bringing it back into focus, the general vibe is that Chernobyl was ‘one of the worst disasters in history.’ Which, make no mistake, Chernobyl is and remains one of the worst disasters in history, but it’s in a way we have a hard time measuring, because we tend to look at disasters in terms of their immediate deadly outcomes.
Wikipedia picks a range between 95 deaths and 4,000 deaths for Chernobyl, which is again, a simplification of its values. But in raw dead, we can point to Chernobyl killing about 4,000 people based on whatever pixies Wikipedia gets its information from. To contrast with that, the estimated dead from the Union Carbide leak in Bhopal starts at 3,787 dead, near the height of estimates for Chernobyl. When you look at the people individually impacted, Pripyat, the city by Chernobyl had a population of 49,000 people exposed to the potential harm of the reactor. The Bhopal gas leak impacted again, half a million people.
One really easy thing to point to is that Chernobyl happened in a Soviet state and the victims were white, while Bhopal is a very clear example of an American, capitalist company that messed up in a way that killed a lot of brown people. Make no mistake, the racism is part of it, and the normalcy of it too – after all, companies have accidents sometimes, oops, guess that’s just part of it.
When I wrote about Chernobyl I talked about how hard it was to properly consider the scale of the disaster because of the way actual immediate deaths were rare while an enormous number of people were heavily impacted by the disaster in ways that shortened their lives. Bhopal is kind of so much worse because also, yeah, a lot of people died, and also the land around the place was really permanently damaged, and the harm was so vast there was no way to really address it, and also because the harm was so vast, well what are you going to do about it, not like Union Carbide could fix the problem they caused with their negligence.
The system of systems in which we live is one where half a million people injured is an acceptable problem because once it’s happened, it can’t be addressed. Causing problems on such a vast scale is acceptable, because you can’t do the one thing that makes it right (which is give them money). It’s a vision of justice that is purchased, that all things in life can be measured and weighted in terms of their relationship to money. If they hurt enough people enough, then there’s no way they can reasonably make good on that, they can’t afford to pay it back, and so…
That’s just gotta be okay.
Maybe the government will help you.
This kind of externality is pretty normal under capitalism. In 1952, a weather event meant that the pollution that the city of London was generating settled down on the city for a few days, creating a severe weather event that killed somewhere between 10,000 to 12,000 people. Turns out that was just enough people dying that the government could make a good case for starting a set of laws to address that and make it so the air in London was livable, and it only took four more years to get that done.
Union Carbide is still around, you know. The company was acquired by Dow, because its stock price was hurt a lot by the disaster they caused in Bhopal (and the disaster they caused in West Virginia, and disaster they caused here in Australia over land damage). After the Union Carbide Gas Leak Disaster in Bhopal, they sold off brands they had to try and generate money, which includes Glad trash bags (which we use) and Eveready Batteries (which I’m sure I have some of in the house). They were bought out by Dow, for stock.
They were worth 11 billion dollars when they were bought, and now they exist as just a part of Dow. They made about 4 billion dollars in 2019, which is down overall. Turns out you just can’t make the same kind of profits as you could when you were able to cut enough corners that half a million people were exposed to your flammable tear gas leaks.
It’s enough to make you wonder how these systems can be captured, can be punished, can be made to address the violence they do. Is it right to murder a company? Is it right for the state to execute them? If the company isn’t responsible, what about the person in that company who made the choice? If they did so, knowingly, how many people is the threshold for your personal willingness to kill in the name of maximising profits?
About 5 million people a year die thanks to abnormal temperatures.

01.05.2024 the world is on fire and i want to die
today, i learned about the union carbide chemical plant disaster in Bhopal, India. a disaster that happened nearly 40 years ago, and is still destroying lives today. it makes me want to die. i don't want to live in a world like this. i want to change it but i feel powerless. and that is by design, i know that is by design that i feel powerless. i'm really depressed sometimes and i kind of fight that off as… maybe it's adhd, i've been saying it's adhd for forever. not sure what's real, i just feel hollow and numb with all the violence in the world. palestine. sudan. india. usamerica. south america. argentina. canada. people are suffering the world around and there's very little i feel i can do. emailed my congresswoman a personal letter, not one of the preformatted ones about Palestine, but she didn't reply. i believed in her when i voted for her. my husband was right. she doesn't care, she is going to uphold the status quo and toe the party line and the party line is genocide denial. we have covid right now. i'm technically cleared to go back out into the world with a mask. i'm not getting my holiday pay because i was out sick the day after new years. my husband has come down with it. i talked him into going to the doctor and getting a note and meds. the doctor gives him today and yesterday of work with the understanding that his weekend is tomorrow, sunday, and monday, so he should be good to go back to work on tuesday. work is calling him in tomorrow. i want to scream at them. i want to scream at the owners of dow chemical company. i want to scream at mary peltola. i want to scream at president biden. i want to scream at the CEO of every fortune 500 company ever. i want to scream at my boss for refusing to give me my holiday pay on the grounds that i have the fucking plague. i want to scream at the unfairness of it all until the world changes, but i am sure i would become hoarse and i don't think i would accomplish very much. i want to scream at the mayor of my city for his response to the housing crisis. (the response is letting people die of exposure btw. and the suggestion to ship our homeless to warmer places. that's the response.) i want to scream at every single person who has ever made a decision to put profit over the lives of innocent people. like the people of Bhopal, the people of Palestine, the indigenous peoples of north america, the people of Sudan, the workers whose lives are lost in preventable accidents, my heart is screaming for the world is on fire and i alone cannot put it out.
#rose rambles#cw vent#world#journal entry#idk what else to tag this as. screaming. violence. hate. depression. world politics doesnt seem to fit.

Rant about the season 2
I literally hate that in the beginning dilshad never asked for help from anyone. Why would she go and live in a village?? Zoya and asad had zoya’s api haider and Ayaan. They would lose their shit and that zoya and asad died in a fire and come back to bhopal and get it investigate it so it makes no sense. If dilshad didn’t want to stay in bhopal anymore she could have moved to New York , London or Dubai as they all live there. Alright she choose to live quietly in a village, when she got sick why didn’t she ask for money from any of them. Alright maybe because of her self respect but she could have at least asked them to find sanam a job. And also what happened to Assad’s company like the whole plot was so sloppy and bad like how did dilshad not ask for help at least for saher cuz my girl was LOSTTT for fuck sake and wouldn’t she tell at least sanam that she had a twin sister who got lost . HOW ANNOYING‼️‼️‼️‼️

Woman From Bhopal Creates Her Own Jungle By Practicing Terrace Gardening – Has 4,000 Plants In A “Jungle Vase”
This is one of the best solutions to all of the environmental issues we currently face: having more green babies. Things would have been different if we had a larger green cover on earth, but some people use the justification that “we live in a concert jungle, we don’t have enough space for plantation or gardening in an apartment culture”
Agriculture assistant professor Sakshi Bharadwaj has grown plants that have therapeutic properties, produce a lot of oxygen, and absorb radiation. The young gardener has transformed her 850-square-foot backyard into a miniature forest.
An environmentalist from Bhopal, Sakshi has grown about 4,000 plants of 450 species, including 150 rare ones. And the catch is – she is upcycling kitchen waste and household plastic trash while growing her green babies.
Sakshi Bharadwaj’s environmental initiative is classified as “creating an 850 sq ft sustainable, urban, vertical, & overhead mini jungle” in the 2021 OMG Book of Records.
She is not just a gardening enthusiast but is also a creative innovator of a brighter greener future.
A New Look To The Old Idea Of Terrace Gardening
Recall the garden your grandparents had in their youth. Back then, they would plant oxygen-emitting trees like neem, pipal, and banyan. Today, however, we live in bungalows, flats, and studio apartments that are severely space-constrained. From housefront gardens to terrace gardening, the concept of gardening has undergone a significant change due to our lifestyle change.
As a result, Sakshi, who also conducts online workshops on gardening and horticulture nationally and internationally, wanted to plant lesser-known species that could replace these traditional large plants and serve the same purpose.
Sakshi started terrace gardening as a mental stress reliever but quickly discovered a pure form of love for it. Along with terrace gardening, Sakshi eventually began to show concern for the planet’s future.
All households have organic kitchen waste like leftover vegetables, fruit skins, empty bags, single-use boxes, and the list goes on, which takes a while to decompose, so she started using it in unique ways and converted kitchen waste into vermicompost and bio-enzymes.
To reduce urban waste, Sakshi believes that recycling non-biodegradable household waste in creative ways is a good idea. Newspapers, plastic bottles, cans, milk pouches, and other items we sell are a few examples of such materials. She consequently planted flowers in milk pouches, bottles, cans, and dried and empty coconut shells.
Spread The Love For Green
In the year 2020, she stumbled upon a group of online gardeners who were cultivating rare and exotic plants. The young lady then got in touch with them, bought some of these unusual plants, and then got in touch with people who could help her expand her collection.
Sakshi decided to major in microbiology. The already intense interest grew even more intense as soon as she started working as an assistant professor.
She said, “As I taught plants’ genetics, I thought of having a first-hand experience of these theories in my own garden.” To satisfy this desire she decided to start her own space where she can experiment and grow her own jungle.
She practises different methods at home. She claimed to have lost a lot of plants while conducting experiments, but she had always learned something new, which she later applied to her gardening skills.
She sourced from various places, explored a number of varieties, and has grown a mind-blowing space for herself. Just like a human child Sakshi believes that every plant has different requirements.
Some require black soil, while still others require regular tilling (gudai) to promote air circulation. Some grow best in soil that is mixed with sand. The young gardening expert went on to say that while some plants can withstand direct sunlight, others need shade.
A True Plant Mom
This plant mother is very concerned about raising her little plants, Sakshi has thoroughly experimented with terrace gardening and its science.
Based on her observations, she developed a soil with a charcoal mixture & coconut husk that can retain water for a longer period of time. The soil first-hand created by her is so reliable that she waters her plants once every two days even when the temperature soars to 46-48 degrees, and the green babies still thrive.
Among the rare species found in the garden are Albo monstera, Variegated Syngonium, Philodendron mexicanum, Begonias, Palms, Peperomia, Ficus, Philodendron Millettia, Epipremnum, Calathea, Sansevieria, Chlorophytum, Black JJ,and others.
The young environmentalist hopes to connect with like-minded people and work to replenish the declining green cover in Bhopal, the state capital. In fact, she believed that the study of plantations should be a part of both school and college curricula.
Despite environmental science being taught in schools, the young environmentalist bemoans the fact that children still lack fundamental knowledge of plants. The 26-year-old asserted that it is impossible for any 10- to 12-year-old to understand how to plant a sapling.
Sakshi adds that this ought to be considered in civil engineering as well so that we can have durable, green buildings that incorporate vegetation into urban planning. This young woman thinks that change only occurs when we change our little steps.

MP High Court: The person who said 'Pakistan Zindabad' got bail on a unique condition, will have to say 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' 21 times every month
MP High Court: This condition has been put by Justice Dinesh Kumar Paliwal. He said that this condition of saluting the flag at Bhopal's Misrod Police Station will continue till the case is over.
The Madhya Pradesh High Court has granted bail to an accused on a unique condition. This condition is to say 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' 21 times. Actually, this person has been granted bail on the charge of raising anti-India slogans, but a unique condition has also been attached to it. Faizal alias Faizan was released on Tuesday on the condition that he will salute the national flag 21 times twice every month and chant "Bharat Mata Ki Jai". This order has been given as a bail condition so that the accused can awaken the feeling of patriotism and responsibility.
This unique condition of patriotism for bail
has been put by Justice Dinesh Kumar Paliwal. He said that this condition of saluting the flag at Bhopal's Misrod Police Station will continue till the trial is over. The court order states, "He will mark his presence at Misrod Police Station on the first and fourth Tuesday of every month between 10 am and 12 noon and salute the flag 21 times, as well as chant 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai'."
Justice Paliwal believes that this unique bail condition may perhaps save the accused from future legal complications. Along with this, Faizal was also directed to deposit a bond of ₹ 50,000, and warned that the bail order will automatically expire if the conditions are violated.
The slogan that landed Faizan in trouble
The case is related to an incident in which Faizal was accused of raising slogans of "Pakistan Zindabad, Hindustan Murdabad". Following which a case was registered under Section 153A of the Indian Penal Code. The state lawyer, while opposing the bail plea, also said that Faizal is a habitual offender and 14 other cases are also registered against him.
Faizal argued that the incident had been exaggerated, but he also admitted that the man seen raising slogans in the video was Faizal.
While Faizal's lawyer argued that he had been falsely implicated, the court, without commenting on the merits of the case, granted bail considering Faizal's criminal history and previous charges, but attached a condition of patriotism to it.

Press Release
HEAD: INTRODUCING DR. LAUREL FISHBEAR
BODY COPY: A lifelong, registered independent voter, Laurel Fishbear is the CEO of Civil Society, a philanthropic organization that concentrates its efforts on climate action, income equality, reproductive rights, Native American rights, LGBTQIA rights, and libraries in the educational and municipal spheres.
Before she was a CEO, Dr. Fishbear was a musician. A classically trained flutist and singer, Dr. Fishbear's first paid gig was as a musician. She freelanced, as her school schedule allowed, throughout her teens and twenties, playing Broadway musicals, pop, country rock, Latin jazz, and music from the Great American Songbook.
She supplemented her earnings in various client service jobs for a decade before she landed her dream job as a copywriter for a major book publisher in 1987. For the next thirty-seven years, Dr. Fishbear worked as a copywriter and a marketing and branding specialist, authoring award-winning web content, print ads, press kits, fundraising materials, political action alerts, news articles, white papers, trade magazine pieces, and direct response packages.
Through it all, Dr. Fishbear found the time to get married, and study for the college degrees she eventually earned: a Masters degree in Clinical Psychology from Harvard University, in conjunction with Baylor University's Child Trauma Academy, and a Masters of Divinity in Biblical Ethics from Fordham University.
She had grown up in a working class family, and had joined the middle class as a woman with a career. But, in 2017, Dr. Fishbear's life changed dramatically when a benefactor she had never met willed her their considerable fortune.
Immediately, she set out to make ethical investments, and to make meaningful improvements on the issues that concerned her most. And so, Civil Society was born.
Today, Civil Society's holdings include C and H Sugar, Bethlehem Steel, Houston Chronicle, San Francisco Chronicle, St. Martin's Press, Chronicle Books, Hillshire Farms, Waiohai Hotel, Baboy Club, and Villa del Sol.
The organization is working on ocean cleanup; eliminating slime pits like the one in Bhopal, India, left by the Union Carbide disaster; building the shade bank from coast to coast, restoring American farmland to American farmers; ensuring income equality by paying its workers a wage above and beyond a living wage, commensurate with their experience and expertise; upgrading security at Planned Parenthood facilities across the nation; standing with municipal and school libraries in censorship fights, and with the families disenfranchised by those campaigns to restore their parental and First Amendment rights.
Dr. Fishbear is especially involved in one division of Civil Society. She is the Program Director and occasional announcer for Wash Day Radio Network, which produces and broadcasts The Vote, Febrile Ohms, and The Free South.
In her personal life, Dr. Fishbear co-parents a sizable family of kids with seven other co-parents -- a group she affectionately calls, "an asexual polycule". She goes on to describe the family this way: "We eat together. We vacation together. Our kids study and attend school together. We read together, pray together, watch movies together, sing together, do chores together. Most of my co-parents work with me at Civil Society.
"Would you believe I'm an introvert?" she laughs.
Her alone time doesn't last, she adds. "I'm a voracious reader, and always have been. But, these days, all my book recommendations come from my family and friends. They'll ask, 'How was it', and suddenly, I'm standing up in class giving book reports again."

Why Choose a Ready Possession Duplex?
Investing in a ready possession property is one of the most secure and hassle-free ways to own a home. There are several advantages to opting for a ready possession duplex in Bhopal:
1. Immediate Move-In: One of the biggest benefits is that you don’t have to wait. With a ready possession duplex, you can move in as soon as you complete the purchase, eliminating the uncertainty that often comes with under-construction properties.
2. What You See Is What You Get: There’s no guesswork involved. You can inspect the property, assess the quality of construction, and visualize how your life will be in the new home. Being transparent is essential to making a wise choice.
3. No Risk of Delays: Construction delays are common in the real estate industry. A ready possession duplex negates this risk entirely, allowing you to plan your future with certainty.
Why Katara Hills?
Katara Hills has emerged as one of the most sought-after residential areas in Bhopal. Its strategic location, combined with the serene environment, makes it an ideal place for families and individuals alike. Here’s why investing in a duplex at Katara Hills Bhopal is a smart move:
1. Prime Location: Katara Hills is well-connected to the major parts of Bhopal, including commercial hubs, educational institutions, healthcare centers, and shopping complexes. This connectivity ensures that you’re never too far from the essentials.

2. Privacy and Independence: Duplexes are often designed to provide privacy while keeping the family close. The layout ensures that everyone has their own space while maintaining a sense of togetherness.
