Best off road caravan Australia 2023
What's the best off road caravan in Australia? Read on to find out the answer. When it comes to off-road caravanning, there are several alternatives to take into account.
If you have access to the greatest off-road caravans, you may experience a level of independence that is unmatched by any other means. As compared to your previous caravans, having one of the best off-road versions might be a great improvement.
Why should you buy the best off road caravan in Australia?
It's like taking your house on the road with you. A high-quality off-road caravan will allow you to safely camp and go into unfamiliar territory.
These caravans are not only easy to set up and use, but also highly functional. And this allows you to go farther than ever before on your travels. Don't forget that there are a few distinct kinds of off-road trailers:
Pop-top off-road caravan
Full-height Off-road Caravan
Hybrid off-road caravan
Semi-off-road caravan
With little further ado, here is the list:
1. Retreat ERV Hyper
One of the pioneers in using the OzXCorp hybrid power system was Melbourne's Retreat Caravans. Here are some of its features:
14.3 kWh lithium battery powerpack
5kW inverter
Up to 2500W roof solar panels
Built into the chassis rails under the floor is a bank of high-capacity battery packs, complete with a management system. This system will run all the appliances for extended periods, including:
Induction cooktop
Microwave
Hot water
Air-conditioning
Compressor fridge for extended periods
2. AOR Quantum FH
For Australian off-roading, the Quantum FH represents the peak of caravan design. In Australia's great outdoors, this full-size caravan, winner of several awards, is a top pick.
This deluxe off-road trailer has everything you need for a comfortable camping trip and more, without sacrificing durability.
With its large exterior kitchen and ample pantry storage, the Quantum FH can easily accommodate four people in its open sleeping space.
The AOR Quantum demonstrates that comfort and convenience need not be compromised while caravanning. And this is due to its internal diesel air heater and internal and outdoor showers.
3. LXV 4.7 Hybrid
You won't find just red soil and level roads in Australia. You will find stunning mountains, stunning rivers, and verdant woods the further you go across the nation. The LXV 4.7 hybrid is the most capable motorhome for crossing the nation to view all of its magnificent sights.
Innovative features, such as dust suppression and any-sway technology, are included in this model. So, your caravan will be in pristine shape when you finally reach your final location.
The LXV 4.7 from Mountain Trail RV is a hybrid caravan that is finer than most apartments. And it's due to the time and effort that Mountain Trail RV invested in researching what is required and what is desired in a caravan and combining those findings.
Thanks to the built-in solar panels, you'll never be in a powerless situation and may ditch your need to stay in campsites. You won't have to worry about being short on anything during your excellent trip thanks to the extensive storage and full complement of electrical appliances.
4. Bruder EXP-8
This luxurious 19-foot, 6-inch-long, tandem-axle travel trailer is perfect for a couple, but it will cost you a small fortune. It has a tonne of cool extras, like:
A highly insulated body is one of the properties that make remote travel possible.
Extra-long-travel suspension is designed for rough terrain
When things become difficult, you may inflate your tyres and breathe easier with an exhaust and pressurised air filtering system.
Both the electricity and water supply should be sufficient for your needs. There's a 5000-watt inverter, 1600-watt solar panels, and a 12,500-watt-hour (1000-ah) lithium battery pack included in the system. In addition, it can hold up to 75 litres of grey water in addition to the freshwater capacity of 350 litres.
5. Harvok Powerbank
Harvok, a new company founded by Chinese and Australian entrepreneurs, aims to make completely self-sufficient caravanning accessible to families. The cost of the 19-foot-6-inch variant is close to $95,000. You can't find a better off-road caravan for the money in Australia. This is also the cheapest all-electric 48-volt model available there.
In exchange, you get a 48-volt lithium battery system with a 14.4 kWh capacity, a 3000W inverter, and at least 1000W worth of marine-grade, versatile solar panels on your roof. And it ought to be enough to power all of the 240-volt home equipment, such as:
A 3.2 kg washing machine
188-litre compressor fridge freezer
24-inch TV
Fusion sound system
Induction cooktop
Reverse-cycle rooftop air conditioner
How Do I Choose the Best Off Road Caravan?
You should think about the size and weight of your towing vehicle when selecting an off-road caravan. When it comes to towing, not all caravans are created equal. An off-road caravan may not be the best decision if your 4WD is on the smaller side.
Think about the kind of terrain you'll be traversing. You will need a caravan designed for tough terrain if you want to do a lot of off-road travelling. You'll have the most options with a semi-off-road caravan if you're planning to spend most of your time on the bitumen.
Look for extra features
Extras are available on certain off-road vehicles to make them more manageable while being towed. Moreover, this is helpful for individuals who are just getting started with off-roading. If this is your first time towing a caravan, anti-sway and stability measures will make your journey much more manageable.
The caravan's amenities should be taken into account as well. You may take your caravan off-road with technologies like independent suspension and dust seals. Some even include solar panels and inverters so that you may live completely off the grid.
Think about the people you'll be travelling with and the terrain you'll be crossing as you peruse caravan options.
The best off road caravan for you depends heavily on your own preferences and needs. It's worth it to spend a little more on luxury amenities and additional room if that's what you want while camping.
Queen-size bed
Appliances
Luxury finishes
Robust chassis and suspension with versatile shock absorbers
Good ground clearance
Spacious living area
High-volume water tanks

The Best Semi-Off-Road Caravans for Australia: Ready for Adventure
Maintaining a dust-free interior in the best semi off road caravan in Australia is essential for the health of appliances like refrigerators. Semi-off-road caravans are excellent at preventing interior dust from spoiling the camping experience—no one wants to spend their vacation with a dusty interior. The majority of them have vented refrigerators and filtered pressure systems installed. The external vents on the refrigerators keep them from leaking and preserve their functionality. The fridges and pressure system do a great deal to ensure that the camper receives as little dust as possible.
The Growing Caravan Sales Trend: Examining the Advantages of Caravan Ownership
Australia has had a notable increase in caravan sales in Australia due to the appeal of traveling through beautiful scenery and relishing the conveniences of home while on the road. Find out why more individuals are making caravans their go-to form of transportation.
There are several benefits to owning a caravan, such as reduced lodging costs and the capacity to plan custom travel schedules. Examine the many advantages that make living in a trailer appealing. Travelers can take the comforts of home with them wherever they go, as caravans offer a home away from home. Enjoy the comfort of being in familiar surroundings wherever your travels may lead you.
Although traveling off-road might be hard on your equipment, caravans composed of composite materials are long-lasting. These caravans, in contrast to conventional types, are resistant to rust, rot, and corrosion. As a result, your caravan will endure many years of off-road use without losing value.
Weight Loss for Better Towing and More Maneuvrability
When off-roading, weight is very important, especially when negotiating uneven terrain. These caravans are easier to haul and lighter overall thanks to the use of composite materials. Additionally, by reducing weight, you can go farther on longer trips and save money on gasoline.
One of the regular elements of off-road excursions is navigating narrow paths and steep curves. Because of this, you can tow and position them with ease—even in difficult circumstances. You may now explore more secluded and challenging locations without worrying about becoming stranded, thanks to this enhanced freedom.

Local Spot || The Queen of the Clan pt.6
CW: fem!chubby!reader, some tame unwanted attention.
If not for man-made structures, you wouldn’t be able to tell the border between the territory of the natural reserve you got your filming permit for and the sanctuary that cuts off a smaller part of the landscape. Fenced off, it looks just the same – no surprise there, to be honest; sunlit tall grass, sandy and dusty ground and scattered trees, shielding the inhabitants with their shadow. No doubt, they have water sources too – everything in sanctuary’s power to tend to quite simple needs of animals that can’t be let out back into the wild after surviving each their own trauma. Driving past the tall mesh that makes sunbeams ripple when hitting your little Rover caravan, you try covering your eyes to look into the reserve, but no animals come close to the road, hidden securely somewhere deep in their new forever home.
“I hope you’re prepared to be blown away by the luxurious housing, we’re working our asses off to impress city cookies like you here.” With a distinct chuckle, Kir beckons you inside, holding a simple plywood door open for you and dropping your backpack from his shoulder on the porch of the little cabin – a whole line of them drags along a narrow road, animals’ enclosures basically on the other side of the “street”. Land too expensive, government too hesitant to “lose” everything it could provide by leaving it as untouched reserve; thus, someone had to make room for their neighbours, and humans decided to sacrifice their own comfort for the sake of the animals.
“Check this out,” Kir waits until you finish looking around the single room that serves as bedroom, living room, office – even a kitchen, if you can count the tiny portable stove and a kettle on a counter – and with a theatric gesture of a magician opens a narrow door, revealing the tiniest bathroom behind it: a toilet, a small sink hanging off a wall and just a cheap curtain to separate the shower area with a drain in the floor. “Not bad, huh? No hot tub, but pretty close. Don’t recommend you putting candles and champagne there, though, if you even mange to find those around here somehow…” Laughing with you at the deeply impressed and amazed expression you feigned at the sight of your lavish bathroom, Kir raises a finger calling for your attention once more and then struggles with the sink tap for a moment, finally getting it to sneeze and run clean water. “Actually working plumbing. You feeling like a queen yet?”
“Grandiose, brother,” you snort and come closer to hold a handful under the stream, gathering slightly warm water and using it to wipe sweat from your face and neck. “But no, really, don’t think there’s much more I could need, so this is perfect. You’re my neighbour or what?”
“I’m just three cabins away, door’s always open for you.” Having closed the tap, Kir shuffles his way out of the cramped space and leaves your cabin, hands in his pockets. Remembering something, he turns on his heels and nods at your backpack. “Laundry’s in the main building, there are bags to separate yours, it’s all done together in the mornings so it’s best to leave yours in the evening. Oh, and I’ll ask around about something to get rid of the stink.”
With a dazzling grin and a wink, Kir salutes you and finally turns his back, returning to work and leaving you to sort through your belongings and settle in. If everything goes well, you’ll spend just a few days here before the head of your crew successfully prolongs the filming permit and you head out into the savannah once more. Having this bureaucratic delay doesn’t feel good, but in a weird way you feel relieved.
You don’t think you would be able to leave this place without a heavy heart if the shoot lasted just three weeks like planned initially.
Settling on the top step of your low porch, you pull your backpack closer and hold your breath instinctively, even though a week in the wild has somewhat tamed the stink. It’s not strong per se, but it has a stinging undertone of concentrated boiled soap, to the point where it almost tastes sweet on the back of your mouth roof. Scoffing, you pull your belongings out of it, throwing crinkled plastic bags onto the floor behind you.
Finally reaching the one with dirty laundry inside, you grab it along with the empty backpack itself and make your way all the way to the main building, quick to find the laundry room – just as tiny as everything else. You empty your crumpled laundry into a nice canvas bag and write down the slightly scraped off number on it to know which one to pick up later, and then drop off the backpack in the corner, only just noticing teeth marks on it in several places – a chewed up strap mostly.
Somehow you don’t even doubt it was all Stinky’s doing.
“Adorable bastard,” you grumble under your breath and nearly ram into Kir’s firm chest at the door, too distracted with thoughts of your spotted acquaintance trotting around somewhere in the yellowish grass of the savannah.
“You called?” He laughs watching you roll your eyes and squeezes past you with a pat on your shoulder, a spray bottle of some kind in his hands along with his own laundry. “It’s for your aromatherapy backpack. If you want, you can spray it yourself, I’ll finish my shift sooner and we’ll hit the town. Bet you didn’t get a good look around when you arrived, yeah?”
Only fair for you to deal with your stink problem yourself, Kir already went above and beyond to help you, so you take the spray from his hand and return to the corner to drag your backpack outside, humming in response.
“No, they picked us up pretty quickly… only saw the bus station basically.” You shake the rattling bottle and make a trial spray, high-pressure mist with another harsh, sweet smell – most similar to a mosquito repellent – bursting into the air. The sticker on the can reads as some water- and sweat-repellent for shoes. “Anything interesting to see?”
The spray hisses, covering your backpack in a generous cloud of chemical smell and slight plastic-y glint after it settles. From inside the laundry room Kir raises his voice, admitting that there’s basically nothing except a couple stores and a dingy bar that can be of interest – it’s still worth it, you decide: just fifteen minutes of scootering down a bumpy dirt road and you get to buy something to treat yourself after a week on canned food and maybe even get a drink.
“I’ll come knock on your door then after I finish, then.” Kir leaves the laundry room and catches the spray can you throw him – if your watering eyes and coughing are any indicators, you’ve applied more then enough. Hanging the backpack outside to let it air out the possibly deadly concoction of sweat repellent and hyena sprayings, you finally drag yourself to your cabin.
A cool shower and a little bit of gentle persuasion via banging on the kettle stand until the loose contact clicks and the heating starts, you settle on your porch with your thermos and breathe in deeply. Nothing disturbs you, the feeling of being watched forgotten like it wasn’t even there. Must have really been the savannah getting in your head..
Sun is slowly sliding to the west, still high, but already a bit dimmed and oranged by the incoming dusk. Dry, clear air is rippling and throbbing above the ground, cooling off, weak wind snaking through the dust of the little road. Crickets and cicadas are chirping repetitively, like an ancient ethnic instrument from the good old times when music had more rhythm than melody. From your steps, you can’t make out which direction the call comes from, but somewhere on the sanctuary’s territory roars a buffalo – must be that young bull Kir told you to be careful around.
Two of the sanctuary employees walk past you, dirty gloves and sweaty noses – they smile and nod at you, barely interrupting a lively discussion, something about water going green in one of the biggest water sources. That’s not good, you think, but they don’t look particularly worried. More like confident.
Like they know what they’re doing and why.
Closing your eyes, you take another deep breath and sip your tea, careful not to burn your mouth. Red and pink prints of the vascular system in your eyelids mix with the way you already saw sky go up in flames at sunsets here, a peaceful feeling washing over you. There’s serenity in the way life flows measuredly around here, clocks and calendars slowly growing meaningless in the face of greater time countdown – seasons and solar cycles dictating times to migrate, to hunt, to procreate. People here made the decision to tie their lives to the nature, preserving and studying, and thus their time obeys the same laws, no hectic anxiety of semesters, quarter reports and tight schedules keeping them in a never-ending race.
It’s a blessing – to do the right thing with a reasonable pace, day after day, knowing you have something meaningful to do every time you wake up. In the outside world no one thinks highly of someone digging elbow-deep into the green mud of a small pond antelopes come to drink from, but here it matters.
You’d like to matter.
“Thinking of me with that smile on your face, I hope?” Kir’s cheeky voice drives you out of the meditative headspace and you open your eyes lazily, wrinkling your nose at him – he even made sure to approach you in a way that wouldn’t obstruct the softened sunrays caressing your face.
“Yeah, you wish. We’re going already?” With a grunt, you raise to your feet with his assistance, noticing just how long you must’ve been sitting there, daydreaming. Kir nods and plops a helmet on your head, adjusting the strap under your chin.
“Shopping first, then the bar?” He leads you to the several scooters in sanctuary’s possession, rolling the most new-looking, sandy and just slightly scraped on the wings, on the road and helping you onto it. The machine dips under your combined weight, but Kir doesn’t seem concerned, starting up the engine and driving off the sanctuary territory.
Nearby town can barely pass as one, looking more like a glorified village – small buildings, no higher than three stories, basically a single curved street between them and continuing on to the bigger road. Finally seeing it in the daylight and without the exhaustion of a long trip that kept weighing your eyelids down when you first arrived there on a bus to be picked up by your crew, you find it just as charming – as well as noticing some larger signs of civilization a couple kilometers to the west, tall power transmission poles and antennas around some fenced off facility.
While you try to remember if there was something industrial mentioned when you read about the place you were going to, Kir drags you inside a cramped convenience store, literal mountains of fresh fruits, vegetables and nuts in crates at the entrance and the most random selection of imported goods on the shelves – in a moment of weakness, you pick up some suspiciously looking lime-flavoured crisps and a few cans of cold soda from a fridge that sounds like a fighter aircraft going down from a direct hit, but still manages to keep products inside cool and wet with the condensate.
You leave the store, chewing on some dried fruits Kir helped you choose – even got a discount from a familiar cashier that was happy to inform that they can place orders for some goods if you’re planning to stay longer. Behind your cheerfully polite smile you felt that same wave of belonging that keeps coming back to you.
“We’re a bit late, so all the tables are probably taken, do you mind sitting at the bar?” After you leave your groceries in the scooter trunk, Kir leads you up to the pub, its neon sign already glowing in the slowly approaching darkness, and holds the door open, nodding at the bar counter with just three free stools to your luck.
Keeping in mind that he has “precious cargo” to deliver back, as he calls you, he orders a coke for himself and pays for your cider, promising that it’s one of the things you can actually drink there.
“That’s my favourite, the pear one. When I come here on foot, always grab a bottle or two.” You lean onto the counter, feet dangling above the dirty wooded floor, as you chat with him – he indulges you in the town gossip with some additions from the bartender, making you chuckle as the cider tickles the roof of your mouth. It’s actually good, you admit, and Kir buys you another one before leaving to the bathroom “to see if they have another spider infestation”, which earns him a shoulder slap from the bartender.
When you turn to watch him make way through packed room, you feel your heart stop for a moment, like a prey that finally notices it’s being watched. It’s a fleeting sensation that almost immediately disappears, but you almost hit yourself in the teeth with the bottle neck, once you notice them.
Four men in the furthest corner, staring at you openly – they’re not trying to be discreet, the bearded one saluting you with his whiskey tumbler and two of his buddies flashing you smiles. Friendly smiles, not the ones that make your skin crawl in similar bar encounters back in the big city. Even the one with his face covered by a mask and arms crossed over his bulky chest nods at you and sinks further in his seat, as if it could help him look smaller and less threatening. They seem chill, clearly minding their own business and avoiding the other patrons in that corner, not interested in the rowdy fun of a work day evening among tired people unwinding before heading home.
To fight that initial creeped out feeling, you nod back at them, quickly averting your gaze with a chuckle once you see them light up almost too obviously. Must’ve been ogling you for quite some time, if the smallest acknowledgement gets you such a reaction. It’s kinda sweet, their excitement radiating from the corner, and you watch from the corner of your eye them exchanging a few words before one of them has to force the big guy with a mohawk back into his seat, as if he was already ready to rush through the bar to talk to you.
“I go away for five minutes, and you’re already making eyes at someone?” Your eyes shoot up to see smiling Kir, but as you watch his expression change once he glances over his shoulder at your four watchers, your brows knit together. “Oh, no, cookie, you stay away from that folk, alright? Come on, let’s go, before they come up here.”
Before you even can object, Kir tugs on your elbow insistently, and you have no choice but to grab your almost finished bottle, say a hasty goodbye to the bartender and follow him, stumbling from the sheer force he drags you with, clearly in hurry to get out of the tightly packed bar.
“Hey, can you at least explain? I’m coming, don’t need to drag me, you know,” you try to keep your irritation down. After all, he has done nothing but look out for you, and if there’s anyone you can trust to know all locals, it’s him. Still, you steal a glance at the four-men company and get the unsettling feeling once again, this time not without a reason: the concentrated, slightly frowning looks all four of the men watch you leave with, don’t feel as friendly anymore.
It's only outside, once the night breeze strokes your heated from the alcohol and crowd proximity cheeks, that Kir lets go of your arm and sighs, putting the helmet on you. His voice sounds hushed, and he looks you dead in the eyes, as he says:
“Don’t mess with them, don’t even talk to them, okay? No one wants them here, they’re not locals. The less business we have with them, the better, especially since you’re here just temporarily. I don’t trust them, and you shouldn’t either. Can you promise?”
By the way you look at him, utterly confused, Kir finally realizes how paranoid he sounds and runs a hand over his face, before looking around and leaning to your ear to say even quieter:
“They’ve been roaming around for months already, cookie. They’re military. They’re bad news from the West.”
Suddenly, you realize what that fenced off facility you saw earlier was. A military base.
Just twenty minutes away from the natural reserve.

is there a canon ending you have in mind for Eli and Boone?
god yeah. i'm gonna put this under a cut because it turned into a long one. this is not just the ending but the stuff leading up to it. word vomit galore
just want to reiterate this is all in my insaneo mode head and simply fnv eli's timeline as far as i'm concerned
in a nutshell eli decides an independent vegas is ultimately the best for the residents. he has a hard time deciding between an ncr rule (a somewhat more organized freeside and new vegas, and potentially more resources aside from energy), but seeing firsthand the idiocy operating under the monolith, incompetence, and corruption, does he decide to help the followers of the apocalypse establish control over the area with the help of the king, since julie farkas and the king are both actual people of authority who the people of freeside respect.
when eli tells boone he's not going to help the ncr, boone's conflicted. he's been following eli around because (1) eli makes good on his promise re:fighting the legion, (2) eli is a legion magnet because caesar + lanius hate his guts and keep sending hit squads after his ass, and (3) he genuinely thinks eli will die without him. (none of this is related to the fact that boone enjoys his company, obviously. not even a little bit. obviously.) he's torn between the ncr, the only system he knows, and the person who stands as the trigger of the largest political change in the region. is he responsible for changing this person's mind? does he want to change eli's mind? he doesn't know shit about the ramifications of the ncr leaving, nor the ncr staying. is he just following orders again? despite what happens at bitter springs (hopeful ending) he can't really let the idea of the nation he grew up with go.
so at the end of second battle of hoover dam, the ncr gets chased out (mostly). eli still doesn't really know where boone stands regarding the ncr, because for all his talk and bluster he doesn't want boone to dislike him for prying (which has happened already before). forgive him, he's got a big fat crush that won't go away on the guy. he's tired. he's hungry. he's thirsty. but all he can do is think, "boone's going to follow them back." which is when the picture above happens. he snaps back to his senses obviously, because what right does he have to ask something like that?
but boone stays. eli goes to talk to julie and he's there. eli sits at the tops in benny's workshop for days, programming and reprogramming systems for the securitrons and tinkering with finer motor controls and he's there. eli negotiates with the crimson caravan and he's there. eli is confused but yknow. what is he going to do talk to the brick wall of a man about his feelings??
boone sees what eli does for the people of freeside. even helps, sometimes, even though the only thing he thinks he's good at is killing. he thinks, is this what being better is? is this what amends are? but like a reoccuring rash he gets the Itch. thinks about the ncr. about manny. they could enlist back into first recon, easy. he goes back to novac to look over things he'd left there, things he used when he'd freshly left first recon, spends the night in his old room.
only he can't sleep. he can't sleep because he can't hear the sound of eli playing some shitty video game on his pipboy. he can't hear eli and veronica arguing over which snack is the best for the road, or eli tuning ED-E to different frequencies to see what he can pick up. he can't see eli going to the bathroom what feels like every 5 minutes because of his wacked out digestive system. he can't hear eli cursing as he tries to take off his leg brace only for something to get stuck, and then him rustling around for his tools, not being able to find the right one, and then jamming whatever he can find in the joint to get it unstuck.
so he goes back to new vegas, and when he sees eli's smile when eli sees him, dirty and sweaty from working, he knows it's an easy choice to make.
(yes they eventually do h*ld h*nds. when is that? i don't know. when IS that. someone tell me please)
after that eli and boone stay in vegas for a bit to get everything as stable as possible, even though it's an uphill, impossible challenge, and then i think eventually eli's curiosity would get the better of them when he's a little older and he'd leave to find different things to prod and look at with boone at his side :^)

Even Heroes Fail Sometimes

Thirty-five, thirty-six, thirty-seven,-
Thirty-eight seconds since Eddie last opened his eyes.
Steve doesn’t know why he’s counting. Maybe he just needs something to do, something to distract himself from the horrors with. From the frightening noises of the Upside Down slowly falling apart and the smell. He’s got blood sticking to every part of his body, some is his, some is not. Most of it is Eddie’s, gushing out of too many wounds.
Fifty-seven, fifty-eight, fifty-nine,-
Steve keeps counting.
Maybe the doctors will need to know how long he’s been unconscious when they get him to the hospital.
Because they will get him there, no matter what Eddie said.
‘Jus’ leave me ‘ere. You- you’re better off without me.’
They would never leave him behind, they couldn’t. Steve couldn’t. Because Dustin needs Eddie. Needs to know that at least they tried.
No matter how hopeless it seems.
No matter how slim the chances are that he’ll make it.
They have to try.
Sixty-three, sixty-four, sixty-
“S’eve?”
He’s never been happier to hear his name, to hear Eddie’s voice, despite how broken he sounds.
“I’m here, Eddie. I got you. Just- hang in there. We’re almost there.”
Technically, it isn’t even a lie; the gate is already in sight, gleaming and moving, frayed edges blazing like flames.
They’re so close, just a few more steps. Eddie doesn’t need to know that the hardest part is yet to come.
“’m not gonna make it, Stevie.” Eddie’s voice is so weak, so small compared to what he usually sounds like.
This is wrong. This is not how it’s supposed to be.
“Bullshit!” Steve protests, forcing his legs to keep going, forcing his arms not to loosen their grip around Eddie’s mangled body.
This is not the time to give up, not when they’re almost out the gate. They just have to make it to the other side where Nance is waiting with the caravan to get them to safety.
“Even heroes fail sometimes,” Eddie whispers and Steve can hear that he’s smiling.
Why is he smiling?
“We’re not gonna fail! We’re gonna make it and you will be fine! We’ll get you to the hospital and they’ll-“
“Thank you, S’evie. F- for tryin’”
Eddie’s body goes limp in his arms.
Three, four, five-
He’s unconscious again, that’s all.
He’s not dead. Eddie is not dead. Steve can feel that he’s still breathing. That’s not just his imagination, right?
“Come on, Eddie! Keep breathing, please!”
Steve tries not to panic but it’s hard not to. With Eddie hanging motionless over his shoulder, he can’t see his face, and there’s no time to stop and take a look at his wounds. They’ve got to keep moving.
Steve feels like his heart is trying to break through his ribcage and his lungs feel like they’re about to collapse. Everything hurts. His own wounds sting and itch, and his muscles tremble from overstrain.
Please, Eddie. Please don’t die.
---
Steve doesn’t remember how they made it through in time before the gate closed behind them. But they did, all of them.
Poor Robin seems to be in shock. She’s in the front seat next to Nancy, hasn’t said a word since they got out.
Nancy is trying her best to concentrate on the road, doing everything to keep a straight face while Dustin is crying and screaming at her to ‘Drive faster!’
The boy is completely out of his mind, probably in pain – his leg really didn’t look good – and he must be so scared, so worried about his bleeding friend in the back.
Steve hovers over Eddie’s lifeless body, helplessly pressing pieces of cloth against the worst of his wounds. There’s blood everywhere and he still hasn’t opened his eyes again.
“Come on, Eddie. You can do it. I know you can.”
Steve has lost count, has lost every feeling for time and space, can only focus on the shallow up and down movement of Eddie’s chest.
He’s weak but he is still breathing, still holding on.
That’s good, right? Means he’s still got some fight left in him. That maybe, despite all the fucked-up shit going on, he’s still got something worth living for.
“You can’t die, Eddie. Dustin needs you.”
I need you.
“Alright, Steve, get ready! We’re here!”
The caravan comes to an abrupt halt with the tires screeching as Nancy steps hard on the breaks.
And then, chaos unfolds.
“Help! We need help!”
It’s good to hear Robin’s voice even if it pains him how broken she sounds, how he can hear the tremble in each word – he knows she’s only barely holding on, knows her good enough to know she’s near tears, on the verge of letting it all out.
But she’s a fighter, Robin is.
His best friend in the world is so brave and so, so strong when it counts. You’d think her clumsy, rambly nature is an act when you see her on the battle field.
She shouldn’t have to be strong. None of them should. They’re fucking kids, for fuck’s sake! All of them. Dustin and his little friends, obviously. But also him, Robin, Nance, Jonathan, Eddie – they’re hardly what you can call young adults and yet, they’re forced to fight like fucking soldiers in a war against powers none of them can even understand.
But it’s what they do.
What most of them have been doing for years now.
They’ve lost so much already and every time evil comes back to haunt them, the losses become greater, harder to deal with.
They’ve lost people they knew, people they loved – not again.
Not this time.
They will not lose Eddie.

⭒☆━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━☆⭒
you trailed your fingers along the soft wind; feeling it grow colder as you watched rows and rows of pine trees line the road, ears popping as the car climbed elevation.
you looked over at the dark-haired boy next to you; your best friend kai who was in the driver's seat, both hands clutching the wheel. a laugh erupted from your mouths when his voice horrendously cracked as he attempted the high note to a song playing on the radio, his contagious dolphin laugh echoing through the car as you both laughed your asses off.
“maybe i should've taken taehyun up on the vocal lessons," he says once he catches his breath, mentioning your guys’ other friend, who also happens to be the best singer you'd both ever met.
you snorted, patting him on the shoulder. "i mean you could right now, he's in the backseat," you motioned to the back where your friend taehyun lay sound asleep, headphones snug as he leaned on the window.
kai muffled a laugh with his hand, looking at the sleeping tae through the rear-view mirror. "oops! i totally forgot he was here," he giggled quieter now, trying to forget how he was once screaming the lyrics to a song.
"kai- we planned that taehyun would come with us and that the choi's would all follow us in yeonjun's caravan. actually- i wonder if they're there yet." you leaned against the window, checking the “six lo$ers” group chat to see if your other friends had arrived to the cabin.
"oh, no, we're definitely getting there first, i need to make sure i get dibs on the room with the comfiest bed," kai stepped on the gas, determined to reach the destination before the other three boys who would surely compete for the same thing. you laughed, rolling your eyes. this is going to be fun.
~
with a minute to spare, kai pulled into the gravel next to a large pine tree in front of the cabin you’ll be staying in, quickly opening your doors and running out of the car once he took the key out of the ignition.
“crap where’s the key?!” he patted his baby blue hoodie frantically, seemingly unable to locate the key to the cabin’s front door. your heart nearly stopped when you heard the familiar honk of a black caravan pulling into the driveway as well. shit! it’s our competition.
"kai hurry!" you held his arm, pulling at his hoodie impatiently as he was starting to panic and screaming his loud, usual screams you were long used to. you stuck your tongue out at beomgyu as he was quickly unfastening his seatbelt and went to open the car door but it was locked, turning to yell at yeonjun which was silent from where you stood.
“quick get in!” at the last second kai found the key in his jean pocket, quickly unlocking the door and shutting it behind the two of you before beomgyu could reach it as he was sprinting towards you. all you heard was his pounding fist and yells on the other side, telling you to open the stupid door!
you and kai stood shoulder to shoulder, backs to the door huffing and laughing as you made it inside first. you didn’t think the shenanigans would start this early on in the trip. but all six of you together? it's certainly bound to happen.
you give kai one look before he grabs your hand, pulling you into the cabin which is quite larger than what you expected. you didn’t quite get the chance to take it all in since you were being pulled down the hallway by your best friend, but it’s warm, wooden interior and cozy ambiance certainly made you feel right at home.
“quick! we need to find the room with the comfiest bed. they have a spare key and they’ll get in soon,” kai whisper-yelled as he pulled you into the nearest room, adrenaline pumping, jumping onto the bed together and rolling around in it before moving to the next.
the next room was a bit bigger, but the moment you hit the mattress, you felt as you had just fallen face down on a rock. “solid no!” you jumped up laughing and the two of you moved to the next room excitedly.
soon enough, you heard the front door rattle and you both jumped on the last bed, immediately hitting jackpot. before you knew it, beomgyu ran into the room with a mischievous look on his face, grimacing at kai. “they’re in here!” he motioned to the other two boys, immediately sprinting over to the bed.
beomgyu jumped right on top of kai, wresting one another and you helped kai by pushing gyu’s arm off, failing miserably when yeonjun also piled on top. soobin just watched from the doorway, shaking his head. “you realize there are other beds right? and where is taehyun?” soobin’s question made everyone stop in their tracks and look at one another.
“he’s still asleep in the car.” kai laughed and you all ran out to wake the poor boy up.
~
the warmth of delicious soup soothed your vocal chords after hours of karaoke in the living room with the boys, eating it on the back patio with kai as the rest of them were either inside napping or doing silly little things in their own world.
the two of you lounged on folding chairs like a storybook elderly couple on a sunday morning, basking in the crisp forest air as you observed the vibrant green trees. occasionally spotting an exuberant looking bird and excitedly pointing it out to one another.
“shh!” kai quickly shushed you as you were in the midst of slurping your soup, stopping abruptly with wide eyes.
“do you hear that?” he leaned in closer, pretty eyebrows furrowed as he cupped a hand to his ear. you shook your head, quietly setting down your soup.
“i think it’s…running water?” he looked over at you quizzically and you really tuned into the noise, at first only hearing the occasional chirp of a bird or wind through the pines, but then you began to faintly hear it. like white noise. water trickling down upon rocks in the distance.
your eyes lit up and kai was quick to notice, his bright smile spreading from cheek to cheek. “wanna go look for it?” he nudged your foot with his, both sporting mismatched fuzzy socks.
“what kind of question is that?” you scoffed, raising a brow; you didn’t even have to explain yourself for him to know it was a solid yes.
kai had a habit of grabbing your hand and pulling you along with him, that’s how your friendship separated itself from the rest of the boys since long ago. he was known to be the closest to you out of everyone, considering you were always practically attached at the hip.
and so he did his usual; grabbed your hand and pulled you into the cabin to get on shoes before heading out in search of this mystery body of water.
beomgyu lay asleep on the floor like an old watchdog, missing his opportunity to tag along when you and kai soundlessly slipped out of the front door.
you followed right behind him, quick footsteps in the gravel and then onto dried leaves and twigs snapping beneath you once you reached the forest. you both swiveled your heads all around and above you, infatuated with the way the tall evergreens and pines tower up into the sky, nearly disappearing into the foggy clouds.
the fresh, pine-scented afternoon air tickled your nose as it was much colder than what you were used to down in the city, but it was more refreshing than anything. it felt good to get away. to be in silence. especially getting to see all these amazing sights with kai.
you only whispered to one another, needing to be extra quiet to be able to hear in which direction the water was coming from. the sound did indeed grow louder, signifying you were getting closer.
kai beckoned you over to where he stood, eyes wide. you jogged over, crunching leaves under your feet as you reached him. low and behold, you had stumbled upon a tall, but gentle waterfall, it’s water cascading down upon large rocks.
your head reached his shoulder when you stood next to him, always a perfect place to rest it as you both looked up at the shimmering water, astonished smiles on your faces.
you made your way over to the body of water surrounded by rocks at the waterfall’s base, occasionally getting splashed by cold droplets that ricochet off of the large boulders.
“kai? what are you-” you shot him a confused glance as he bent down to take off his shoes and socks, slightly rolling up his shorts.
“we’re getting in silly!” he threw his leg over one of the rocks bordering the edge, screaming when his feet were submerged in the ice cold water.
“we’re?” you crossed your arms over your chest, raising an eyebrow at him as he held his hands out to you. you knew kai pretty well— he wouldn’t sabotage you by throwing you into the water like the others would. you trusted him to be gentle and civil with you, as he was more sincere than anything. of course, he loved to joke around but he knew you would despise getting thrown into ice cold water.
you removed your shoes and rolled your pants up before taking his soft and warm hands in yours, feeling his attentive eyes on you as you carefully dipped your foot in, the breath leaving your chest at how freaking ice cold it was. of course, your penguin-like friend was able to get in effortlessly.
“this is impossible ningning!” you grabbed his shoulder for support as you clenched your jaw and stepped all the way into the ice-cold water. he hid the small blush on his cheeks of the endearment of his name he so loved hearing you say.
the two of you waded over to the waterfall, hands occasionally brushing as you were careful not to slip over the moss and small pebbles under your feet.
your necks swiveled to look up at the waterfall, cold water pelting you as you stood mere inches from the cascading water. mesmerized, your hand drew out to run your fingers under the cold stream; kai following as he smiled at the icy sensation.
you watched your hands under the falling water, the only sound in your ears of it plunging in front of you, too loud to hear anything the happy boy next to you had said. you wiggled your fingers under the cold stream, numb by now that you didn’t notice the tips of your fingers had trailed onto huening’s under the water.
he stood there, a bit surprised, but subconsciously moved his fingers slightly closer to yours, hand nearly on top of yours. it wasn’t until he turned to look at you that you felt the need to hide your face, feeling your cheeks grow red and afraid he would notice.
something about the air. about being alone with kai in the forest. you had always found him pretty but right now— right now his beauty struck you in a way you felt your heart beat in your chest. sunshine radiating behind him like a golden halo over his dark locks, dreamy eyes and a smile to melt over. what is happening?
with a shy smile he interlaced his fingers with yours, opening his mouth to say something but not even bothering because what he had to say would be drowned out by the waterfall. so he began to pull you under the waterfall with him, your eyes widening when you realized what he was doing, but your heart took over and inevitably followed.
it was like ice, drenching your right shoulder and then your head and down your hair, then your left shoulder and you were completely submerged, mouth open at the sheer shock as it took the breath from you.
your best friend’s hair had matted down completely to his forehead, covering his eyes completely which drew a hysterical laugh from you. he reached up with your conjoined hands to sweep the hair over his forehead.
he showed you a toothy grin and you couldn’t help but examine his face through the sheen of water, beginning to fawn over droplets scurrying down his pretty nose.
you thought maybe you’d been staring for too long, darting your eyes away from him and over to the rocks around you, curious about the small flowers growing between the cracks.
yet, you caught him staring at you from out of the corner of your eye, small smile on his lips as his eyes darted around your face. you couldn’t avoid the small flutter in your chest.
you and kai were usually on the silly side. prolonged eye contact and blush on one another’s cheeks not exactly what you two usually share.
“whatttt?” you yelled over the roar of water, tilting your head to one side, noticing his apparent nervousness when he shyly looked down at your hands.
taking a small step forward, leaning in close so you could hear him over the roar of water around you, chest nearly pressed to yours.
he opened his mouth to say something and nothing came out but a small laugh, apparently nervous to say whatever it was. you cupped his cheek as to comfort him, suddenly aware of your gesture and shocked as to what you were doing. you’d never touched kai in such an affectionate way.
“you can say it, kai.” you assured him, your voice loud enough for him to hear. how couldn’t he hear you anyway? his face was a mere 3 inches from yours. you felt slightly uneasy at this proximity but you also kinda really liked it? your emotions buzzing all over the place at this unprecedented tension.
but kai didn’t say anything, he just stood there, looking at you like you were the beautiful waterfall in the forest, taking in all of your natural beauty.
out of no where, you leaned closer, standing on your tip toes and pressed your lips to his cute nose. what a stupid, stupid idea. what the hell am i doing?
but he found it absolutely adorable, face scrunching and high pitched laugh exiting his lips.
“you like my nose?” he asked you quizzically, and you nodded, having to look away with a slight tinge of embarrassment, squeezing your eyes shut.
then grabbing your chin to angle your face back to his, still flustered, he musters up the courage to look you in the eyes, flicking them down to your lips and back up to admire you.
you were simply overtaken by his dark brown eyes; noticing the way his pupils dilated as he focused nearly into your soul, sinking into the dreamy trance that you never knew your best friend was capable of pulling you into in this way.
in a million years, you never thought you'd share a kiss under a freezing cold waterfall in the middle of the forest with kai kamal huening. but here you were, leaning into him, the nearest proximity you ever had since knowing him, not paying any mind to the occasional shivers and goosebumps pelting your body.
he closed the small gap that was left between your lips and you stayed there, slightly squeezing his hand as your heart felt it would beat out of your chest. the kiss was short and sweet and you almost wished it had been a little longer. but kai pulled away slowly, his cheeks the reddest you had ever seen them.
“and i like your lips.” he giggled, eyes nearly shut with how big he was smiling. you never knew kai felt the same way about you until now, dropping small hints along your friendship that you didn’t quite pick up on until now, only now getting his message with a sweet peck to your lips.
by now, your body was frozen and you pulled kai out of the heavy stream with you, not able to withstand it any longer since the adrenaline was wearing off and you could now begin to realize just how cold you were.
you wrapped your arms around your body to withhold as much body heat as you could, violently shivering with how cold you were. kai was cold too, but he made warming you his priority, wrapping his arms around you to hopefully try and help.
“here, stand on my feet,” he requested and you did just that, balancing on the tops of his feet as he walked the two of you over to the exit, helping you over the rocks and getting your shoes and socks for you.
you smiled, the only warmth in your body provided by his kind gestures that would melt anyone’s heart.
“race you back?” you looked down at him as he tied your shoe for you, his eyes flicking up quickly at the sound of those words. and before you knew it you were sprinting after kai in the woods; feet numb but heart warm and racing just as fast as you were after him.
~
“never seen that hoodie on you, is it new?” yeonjun asks as he stirs his hot cocoa, gazing at him from your spot in front of the fire place.
“oh it’s kai’s, actually!” you sip your apple cider, snuggling into the oversized baby blue hoodie that kai lent you a couple days ago once you returned from your freezing cold adventure.
“oh so now you’re wearing his hoodies hmm?” beomgyu nudged you, a mischievous grin on his face as he wiggled his eyebrows at you suggestively, exaggeratedly winking at yeonjun from where he stood in the kitchen.
the boys had began to notice your closeness with hueningkai especially recently on this trip, due to the fact you two would sneak out at random times and leave them without a clue as to where you two were.
of course, they knew you were always close in comparison to everyone else, but recently, they hadn’t even seen you two much because of how much time you were spending together out who knows where.
they made conspiracies that you guys were secretly dating and would go out on little cute dates everyday, that’s why you wouldn’t tell them. yet they secretly cheered kai on because he was so happy lately. and when kai was extra happy, everyone was extra happy.
and to be honest, that conspiracy didn’t sound too completely far from the truth. ever since you and kai had kissed at the waterfall, you had grown even closer; your bond deepening and tangling so much that it was almost confusing. you hadn’t felt this way for anyone before and it confused you that it was your best friend; you didn’t want to ruin what you had.
but you wanted to be with kai every second of every day. and he wanted to be with you.
~
and at sunset, you and kai escaped again. hand in hand running into the woods as it was now your favorite place to go.
each time you ran off into the forest, you found something new about each other that you hadn’t known before. hell, you had even discovered what each other’s lips feel like the very first time you even ran off.
you spent your time climbing trees and sharing snacks amidst a deep talk and of course laughter, then carving both of your initials in whichever tree it was, marking it yours.
when you got too tired of walking, kai would carry you on his back, not minding at all. he enjoyed it actually, always offering to give you piggyback rides no matter how tired he got.
you would occasionally go back to the waterfall, sitting on the rocks or skipping stones across the water to see who’s would go further.
today kai wore a loose, earth-toned wool jacket with nothing under but a dainty silver necklace, zipped up enough to expose a bit of his chest. it drew your eyes like a magnet to his pretty collarbones glowing in the setting sunrays.
“i like this jacket on you,” you gingerly traced your fingers along the woven material, a shy smile on your lips. your compliment made his heart skip.
of course, you two were still bestest of friends, doing goofy things and blabbing about anything and everything. but when you caught his eye or exchanged a small compliment, you both got so shy and quiet and blushy around each other.
you were both aware of another option you had now, completely new and foreign to your relationship; the small kiss from a couple days ago. you held the memory fondly since the moment it happened, warmth spreading across your chest at the thought.
your head rested on his shoulder, watching the waterfall together as you decided to look up at him, eyeing the plush of his lips.
“can we..try it again?” you sort of beat around the bush, hoping kai would pick up on what you were throwing down. you felt too shy to ask your best friend directly if you could kiss him.
“what, race to the cabin?” he furrowed his brows and you laughed, head falling back onto his shoulder.
“i meant-”
“i know y/n, just messing with you,” he nudged you, a sweet smile on his lips.
somehow, it felt natural, like this had been something you had both long wanted to do. like something you were made to do. you kept the comfort of your head on his shoulder and he leaned down to place his lips on yours, slowly melting into the kiss with your eyes fluttered closed.
you could sense everything better now; the warmth of his soft lips, the subtle taste of the watermelon you had snacked on earlier whilst sitting atop a tree, the subtle cool breeze blowing pieces of your hair astray. you enjoyed it even more now, since the first was a bit interrupted by the freezing cold waterfall.
after a few moments, you broke the kiss with an interrupted thought, staring into his eyes and then trailing your gaze to the water where you stared at your reflections. his broad shoulders like a large blob in the water, then yours a smaller blob. it was always like this; next to one another for as long as you could remember. you love kai. and you don't want to ruin what you have.
“this…this won’t ruin our friendship, right?” you were hesitant to look up at him in the eye as you slowly look back up at him, almost worried he would regret it.
but he only smiled, shaking his head.
“never, y/n. you’ll always be riiight here,” he pointed to his chest, at the spot right over his heart. you warmly smiled, finding him the absolute most adorable boy in the world. how could you not have the biggest crush on him?
it all made sense now. kai was everything you wanted and needed in a partner, in a friend, in a lover. but you always pushed away any sort of feeling in fear of losing him. but how could you lose him- how could you lose him if he's always been by your side through it all.
“forever.”
~
the front door creaks as you both sneak back into the cabin, completely pitch black as the boys had gone to sleep, considering it was half past midnight.
you both tip-toe down the dark hallway, finding every room was closed and in use except for the one at the end of the hall; the one you and kai had claimed on the first day.
you could see his pearly smile faintly in the dark, silently cheering that they didn't all steal the room with the comfiest bed. you held onto his arm as you blindly walked down the hallway and into the room, flicking on the dim night light to provide just enough light to see his soft facial features, hair slightly tossed by the breeze seeping through the window.
you two were long past the i'll sleep on the floor so you can have the bed phase of your friendship, so you shared the bed as it was normal for the two of you. and through all these years, never once had it felt uncomfortable even in the slightest. all you ever did was look up at whoever's bedroom ceiling in deep conversation and occasionally kick at each other's feet under the covers.
tonight, a certain tension blanketed the two of you as you lay next to one another, pinkies interlaced under the sheets as you stare up at the high ceiling of the cabin, listening to the subtle whir of wind through the trees.
you felt cozy here, in this little cabin tucked away in the wilderness with your best friend(s). you almost wanted to snuggle into him, but that had yet to be established.
“i like you, kai.” your voice suddenly emerges lowly from the still room, the sound of his rustle under the blanket apparent as he tightened his pinky around yours. turning to face you, you did the same, facing one another with cheeks squished to the pillows.
"a lot." you whisper with a growing smile, just inches from his lips as you stare into the chocolate glimmer of his eyes. you could feel your heart pounding in your chest and drumming into your ears.
with a gentle finger, he lightly tucks away a stray piece of hair behind your ear, bringing intense warmth to blanket your cheeks. you couldn't quite see in the dark, but his were dusted with a rosy tinge as well.
“does this mean we can cuddle now?” his voice comes out shyly, smiling and red in the face at his own question.
you giggle, nodding and smiling so big that your eyes are nearly shut, slowly scooching closer to kai. almost unsure as to go about this, considering it's your best friend you're cuddling.
but you just go for it; pressing your chest to his, wrapping your arms around his torso, snuggling your head into him, cheek pressed to his warm neck and filling the space under his chin perfectly.
he wraps his arms around you and pulls you close, silence filling the room again once you both find the spot you are most comfortable in. you can hear his heartbeat as you breathe him in; warm calico fabric like fresh laundry. the closest you've been to this comforting scent that you wanted to be engulfed in eternally.
"i'm glad we agree, but i like you more," he adds. you giggle, burying your face into his warm chest and you can feel his smile grow with the way his voice flows like it always does when he's brimming with happiness, picturing his cute face in your mind and what he looks like right now.
"at the waterfall i did what i've wanted to for so long." his voice vibrates on the crown of your head, feeling his chest sink as he exhales, relaxing into you; relieved to confess what always weighed on him. eyes fluttering shut as he enjoys your warmth and the scent of your hair curling into his nose, tracing light circles into your back.
you pull your head away to the beautiful sight of his face, looking up at him and finding his eyes shut but then flutter open to look down at you, his lips curled into a pretty smile and slightly parted, looking too good not to kiss.
and so you lean up slowly, inviting him to lean down and close the gap for your third kiss, feeling his heart pound against yours. you're infatuated with the way his hand always comes up to cup your cheek, savoring every moment he had with you. in this moment, your love grew for your special boy, falling for him evermore.
~
"kai over here look!" your feet patter against the snow as you run towards familiar rock formations, sprinkled with snow as you point at it, covered in white.
he runs up, giving you a large hug from behind, his large wool jacket engulfing you in its warmth, a kiss to your cheek; now a normal thing.
summer and autumn had passed twice and your souls had intertwined more than you could even fathom; ever since your best friend had become your boyfriend, your life became filled with so much pure happiness that you could easily mistake any day for a fairytale.
with the help of his grasp, kai hoists you up so that you sit on the rock he had brushed the the light dusting of snow off of, threading his arms through yours to hold your waist as he places his chin in the crook of your neck.
it just felt so natural, like this was what the two of you were born to do. always destined to be together and never, ever apart.
the bitter winter breeze wasn't so bad with his warmth seeping into you, cradling you so good and you swear you'd never felt comfort until you fell in love with this boy.
after a few moments of enjoying the view of the frozen waterfall, kai pulls his arms away from you and instead dangles his dainty necklace around your neck, the same one you noticed two years ago in this same place.
the small bead at its end weighed down onto your sweater, drawing your eyes down to the sparkling jewel; noticing it was the shape of a heart. a token of his diamond love for you.
"i wanted to give this to you then," he whispered, a sweet smile on his lips when you turned to face him.
your eyes said it all, holding the words i’ll love you forever in them without having to say a word. he just knew.
“my heart is yours.” he says as he embraces you, hardly able to contain your emotions as you hug him even harder, as hard as you could, for that fact.
his love felt like warm blankets on a cold morning, a crackling fireplace as you sip warm apple cider, cuddles during a midnight storm, the much-needed hug after a long day. he felt like home.
"race you back?" he tilted his head with a sly smile, helping you down before disappearing off into the woods. you chased right behind, sure to beat him this time.

The idea of soft and amnesiac Raphael is living in my head rent-free so here you go. All thanks to certain someone.
“Seems that I may have caused some unintentional heartburn to your friend.”
Your bag hit the floor with a loud thump. Hopefully the potion bottles inside stayed unbroken.
Raphael met your shock with amusement.
He stood up from the burnt-sienna coloured lounge chair and swiped some imaginary dust off his doublet – or maybe it was Scratch’s hair.
“You’re… awake!” you yelped in horror mixed with relief.
“All thanks to your efforts, I’ve been told,” Raphael said, eyeing you with curiosity. His chestnut brown eyes were bright with no traces of sleep.
“Well, what happened to you? Why were you knocked out in the middle of the road?” you asked fervently, but deemed it best to keep some distance between you and him.
However, as he spoke, Raphael started narrowing that distance. You realised no one else was home. Gale had probably taken Scratch with him to Ramazith’s Tower. Damn Astarion for leaving you on the spot like that.
But wait, Astarion would’ve never left you to deal with a devil alone. Something unexpected was going on.
“I thought maybe you could shed some light to what happened to me,” Raphael said slowly and kept walking towards you.
“You don’t remember anything?” you asked and with Raphael faintly shaking his head in denial, you continued: “We found you on the way from Candlekeep to Baldur’s Gate. Visibly, you were unharmed, but you slept for almost three days in a row.”
If Raphael was surprised to learn of this, he didn’t show it. He stopped right in front of you and said in thought: “And you were kind enough to pick me up in your little caravan and bring me to the city.”
You swallowed, waiting for him to blow up into flames or impale you with a clawed hand any second now. “That’s correct.”
Something resembling a smile flashed on Raphael’s lips. He took your hand, bowed and brushed his lips over the back of your hand. You winced in surprise.
“Thank you, my dear. I am in your debt.”
Your head was spinning. Whoever this man was, he was only Raphael in looks, scent, mannerisms and voice.
“U-uhm. Of course, I could never leave you– I mean, anyone on the side of the road like that,” you managed to explain in a shaky voice.
Raphael smirked at your slip up and let go. The back of your hand was almost burning and you had to take a glance to make sure he hadn’t caused a burn mark.

No one should ever go to Kasilof. It is a terrible place with terrible weather and overflowing porta potties and overstuffed dumpsters with child snatching and dogfighting and some crazy guy swinging a sword that got shot by the cops. Awful stuff really. Best avoided. Just not worth the bother.
That was the gist of the news stories leading up to the kasilof sockeye runs this year it was no issue at all to find a camping spot and it wasn't nearly as crowded so I totally agree with the mainstream media on this one. It's a den of vice and iniquity. Stay away. The rent lowering gunshots clipped a reporter.
So this year we went down with a largish caravan of 4 family's worth of people and junk and a limit of 170 fish to catch. We're soo good at planning and logistics that this went off with no hitch and no arguments (lying). Since we also had a very pregnant lady and excited 2 year old who would not be fishing but were still counted towards the limit we planned on being there for a while, at least 3 days if not more. We also had the damn dog.
So at least I was planning on a few days of chill fishing and a long slog. My brother in law left an hour or so early with his girlfriend and had one job, to find us a good spot to descend upon and set up our camp. They did not do this. One job. The fishing was hot so they didn't even really bother to park, we pulled up on his truck kinda packed off to the side of the road and he was down in the water with a pile of fish on the beach because he didn't even have a cooler ready.
So by the time we bitched him out, found a campsite, set up camp and squared everything away, it was approaching midnight. This is normal, you fish the tides as they come and its not like it gets dark so wandering the beach all night long is expected so long as you're considerate of those trying to sleep.
But then.
My Sunshineman brought his boat. I knew he brought his boat, I was in fact the one arguing that he needed to do things like park and set up camp rather than do exactly what his brother did and throw himself into the river as soon as he saw fish coming in, while neglecting those little things like, food and sleep. But since we were done setting up, he wanted to go fishing from his boat. At midnight.
I had been up early that morning to do terrible things in the bilge of a different, much larger boat that resulted in fun colored bruises on my ribs and sore shoulders, so I wasn't particularly feeling the vibe on this one. I helped launch the boat and then bowed out to go pass out in a pile of blankies in the sand.
In the time it took two set up camp and launch the boat Adak, the dog, managed to get into a fight and have his face ripped up. He is huge and he is stupid but he doesn't take shit but he was on leash while the other dog was running loose, so the impulse was to pull him back, if he had been left to his own we probably would have gotten away with out anyone getting bit.
He's fine and chicks dig scars but its indicative that I had no idea this happened 25 yards away from me until adak came up to me and smeared his face all over my pants. My pants already had engine grease, bilge slime, grass stains, fish guts, coffee, mud, sand and a few baby boogers on them so what's a little dog blood too?
So yea, not my circus, not my monkeys, in tent, pants off, pjs on, cozy bitch in the blankies, out like a light, nothing better than sleeping on the beach.
Except for the fact that your husband wakes you up at 2 AM asking for help.
I'm convinced he kept it vague on purpose.
I'm up. I'm out of the tent. I'm still in my pj's. I have my drysuit on over top. My waders have a hole in them. It is, I cannot stress this enough, 2 AM.
The boat is a 16 foot mil surplus zodiac with a 40 horse Johnson, if you care about that sort of thing. It gets nice comments from people who do care. We usually run one person to drive, 2 to work the nets, and one optional person to handle fish as they come in. Sunshine went out with our 2 friends who AFAIK crawled off the boat and directly into bed after 2 solid hours of midnight deathmatch fishing, because I watched them stumble out of the boat and didn't see them again until breakfast. The boat was entirely full of fish. THEY CAUGHT 49 FISH IN LESS THAN 2 HOURS. Kasilof reds are usually smaller than Kenai reds but there must have been a secondary run because half were the average 6 or 7 pound fish and the rest were something like 10 lbs each.
At some point sunshine must have woken up his brother because he materialized from somewhere and we got the fish out of the boat into a cooler so we could drag them up to clean them. Then came the thing that we're all still more than a smidge irritated about. Sunshine went back out in the boat, by himself, to go get more fish while BIL and I cleaned the ones he had just brought back. We couldn't even yell at him because a good chunk of the beach was asleep.
So at about 4 am the sky has decided to shift from twilight to morning and I am sitting on a cooler of gutted fish in a superbly uncomfortable drysuit having a moment of perfect communication with the bald eagle sitting on the light pole at the end of the dock. We would both enjoy breakfast, preferably of fish. But it is four fucking am in the morning. And we should both be alseep. Breakfast is not a meal best enjoyed at 4 am. A nap sounds best.
Sunshine comes back with 3 more fish. I honestly do not remember what happened to those fish. Either I gutted them or he gutted them or maybe they got raptured into fishy heaven, (which looks suspiciously like the inside of a cooler) I legitimately do not know, because I think my REM cycle was starting up again.
I get a hand to haul the cooler back to camp. I peel out of the dry suit and was asleep back in my cozy sleeping bag blanket pile before Sunshine even made it to the tent.
At something like, idk, 6am, someone started splitting wood. loudly. I was awake enough to identify that it was near, and probably not a problem and I distinctly remember making the semi conscious decision to sleep through it. At about this point my phone died and for the rest of this trip I had no idea what time it was. I intended to take pictures and document things and whatnot and that just did not happen. The phone stayed dead and my hands stayed busy.
I woke up last, presumably because the demon that compels my mother-in-law to get up at 5 AM every morning had already woken everyone up with the wood splitting. She was toasting breakfast burritos, and it wasn't as if I had slept through the whole morning because I wasn't even the last to get a burrito.
My FIL made a joke that at least one of us got a full 8 hours and BIL earned back all his brownie points by jumping in to defend me unprompted. She was indeed up at ungodly hours playing with knives and dead fish. How dare you impune her honor simply because she looks so dewy fresh after sleeping in the dirt?
I did at least get the chance to put a net in the water from the beach but we were limited out by 1pm. That's enough fish fast enough that we were dumping out food and drinks coolers because we planned on freeing up space as we went. So I had our camp that we had intended to stay in for as long as a week broken down and hundreds of pounds of fish gutted and iced in a few hours. While drinking, because we had several days worth of food and drinks and beers that had been displaced by fish. The solstice vodka lemonade from matanuska brewing is great btw.
We had planned to overlap the end of our trip with the beginning of my mom and sister coming down so we could fish together, so I called mom as were were leaving the beach. From Sunshineman's phone of course, mine being dead at the bottom of a bag somewhere. As the current time was something like 16 hours from when we arrived, she assumed I forgot something or was just calling to tell her about the nice weather, or terrible weather, or confirming the news report's porta potty horror story. She didn't expect us to pull in a years worth of food in a single tide cycle.
So we get home without incident, and get to cleaning and fileting and packing and labeling at, some, late, evening time, maybe? I'm time blind on a good day and if I had a watch it would be covered in fish slime.
So yeah, this year's fish camp was condensed into a single solid slug of dense firey whatthefuckFISHfishFISHcleanpackgutgohome. Niece creature didn't want to change our of pj's so she wore the same outfit for her entire trip which is spectacular from a laundry standpoint because a toddler given free reign to a muddy fishy beach goes about as well as expected. She had a ball and then napped through almost the entire cleaning and packing process when we got home, which is what I wanted to do but instead I fileted triple digits worth of fish.
Mom went down later for the weekend and she got rained on for 3 days and caught 7 fish and a flounder. We caught the hot run and came home with fish but at what cost?

Horse Girl Blues
(full credit for sparking this idea goes to this post. literally this appeared fully formed in my brain when I was trying to sleep last night lol)
A couple days after his traumatic transformation, Wyll is late back to camp for supper. Astarion, anxious to get on with his plan to seduce Wyll, goes looking for him and finds Wyll with… a horse. Horse girl Wyll talks with decidedly not-horse-girl Astarion about horses, among other things. Fluff and cuteness ensue.
Pairing: Astarion/Wyll
Wordcount: 2379
Rating: G
Read on AO3
__
The sun was setting over their camp on the Risen Road, and no one had seen hide nor newly-grown horn of their fearless leader.
Wyll had wandered off after they pitched their tents, muttering something about foraging for supper, and they all had let him go without comment. It had been two days since his peevish patron, that Mizora, had punished him for sparing Karlach, twisting his form into that of a half-devil’s. Frankly, Wyll pulled it off, Astarion thought. Someone who was less ridiculously attractive at the outset might not be able to carry horns, black eyes, claws and a tail, but Wyll did so with aplomb.
Not that Astarion had said it to his face. He was perceptive enough to realize this had cast Wyll into something of a dark night of the soul. Fair enough. Astarion knew intimately how world-shattering it was to have your body mutated against your will.
But it had thrown a wrench in things; that is, specifically things for Astarion. He had a straightforward plan to secure his safety amongst all this madness: move with all speed to seduce the de-facto head of their little band (Wyll) and get him nice and attached. He had already had to slow things down to a crawl when, after some probing, Wyll made it clear that he was an insufferable romantic who wanted all manner of courting before he would so much as hold hands.
Wyll hadn’t said no to Astarion’s flirtatious reconnaissance; he had blushed nicely and teased Astarion back, even. But he was firm, far more sure of himself than one expected from someone in their mid-twenties. But Astarion figured that having a devil on your shoulder for seven years probably changed you like that.
And now Wyll hadn’t so much as looked at Astarion these past couple days. So when the question was asked about who would go fetch Wyll, Astarion immediately volunteered, saying something about having the best nose to find him. Which was actually true.
The group had figured Wyll was not in trouble: they had heard no sounds of a struggle which would echo off the sheer cliff faces around here easily, and there was also the matter of the tadpoles. No one had sensed any distress over the invisible line from Wyll’s.
So Astarion tromped up the dusty path around scrubby growth and the ubiquitous ruins of a downed wagon. That was all that was here. The remains of a widespread slaughter of a caravan and inedible plants. For that reason, they had decided to regroup back at the Grove tomorrow before making further plans.
Astarion had caught Wyll’s scent quick enough. It had gotten filed away in his brain ever since the night where, miraculously, the monster hunter had let the monster Astarion drink of his blood. So the scent of that, of Wyll generally, was something Astarion would not soon forget. If ever.
The road leveled off, and Astarion came upon a stand of actual trees. Wyll was in there, his nose told him, though he couldn’t see him for all the undergrowth. He began to push through the shrubbery and saw Wyll in the next moment, standing in the clearing on the other side and… alright. He was just standing, apparently.
Astarion opened his mouth to say something, maybe a gentle berating so he didn’t have to get too close to sincerity—
And that’s when he saw it. Well, he heard the thing’s snort first as it clearly saw his own movement and caught his dangerous scent on the breeze. It was a horse. An actual live one. They had seen plenty of mangles carcasses around here, but this one seemed miraculously unhurt, and bare of any harness.
Wyll’s head tilted slightly toward the disturbance. “Astarion,” he said softly.
“Sorry—are you trying to catch this thing?” asked Astarion, still half in the bushes and eyeing the very unhappy horse. For whatever reason, it hadn’t bolted. It remained several paces in front of Wyll but was clearly staring at Astarion, its ears pinned right back as it tossed its head, stamping at the dirt like it couldn’t quite make up its mind whether to stand its ground or flee.
“Easy, girl,” Wyll murmured. He didn’t raise a hand, didn’t even look straight at it, standing passively at an angle. Nonthreatening.
“I should probably leave, do you think?” Astarion called, voice pitched up with anxiety. “The beast probably thinks I’m here to eat it.”
“No, stay,” said Wyll, still not turning. “She should get used to you. I’m hoping I can get her to follow us. Maybe make a halter if I can find some rope to tie one.”
Astarion froze obediently, still feeling rather out of place. The horse had stopped stamping, but it still ranged back and forth with its head, almost snakelike. She, Wyll had said. A mare, then. Not that Astarion knew much of anything about horses. It seemed rather… average, he supposed? Its coat was almost a copper color, which he conceded was nice. “Well, it would be handy having it to carry our mounting pile of things,” Astarion said at last.
“No, no. I just want to get her back to the Grove,” Wyll murmured. “I can’t think of where else around here she’d be safe. Old girl survived this bloodbath. Figure she’s set for some kind of retirement.”
“Old?”
“Yeah. I think so. She’s a bit swaybacked. A bit sunken over her eyes. If I could get a look at her teeth, I may be able to tell better.”
“Well, she’d probably show you her teeth just fine if you walk up to her,” Astarion said.
Wyll huffed a laugh but stayed quiet. His focus was completely on the animal.
“So, you’re a horseman?” Astarion ventured, to fill the silence if nothing else. “Did you leave some trusty steed behind when you got snatched up by the Mindflayers?”
Wyll shook his head slowly. The mare by now had unpinned her ears, but they were turned straight to the two men. She still seemed stiffly on alert. “No. I never had my own. I might borrow one to travel a distance, but I’d never take one hunting. Would be like delivering a monster’s dinner right to it.” Wyll paused. “I didn’t grow up with them, really. I was born and bred in the Gate, after all, where they’re banned. I take it you never had much exposure, either?”
Astarion shook his head, finding himself mirroring Wyll, doing it slow. Softening his own rigid stance. It felt silly. But he was a bit curious what the beast might do. And it would serve to get further into Wyll’s good graces.
“I didn’t even get on one until I was thirteen,” Wyll continued, his gaze gone far away. “Father became Marshal then, and he thought it was right that I learn more gentlemanly skills. So he sent me for lessons at the Fists’ stable outside the walls.”
“I bet you were a natural, weren’t you?”
Wyll shook his head, smiling. “Oh no. I was just persistent. I got very good at sticking like a burr to the saddle. That, and the horse I ended up liking the most—well. Our friend here reminds me of her. Mares, you know, have a bit of a reputation. They tend to have… strong personalities.” Wyll’s glance slid back to Astarion, his good eye sparkling mischievously. Astarion found himself smiling slightly back, though he had no idea why. Wyll continued. “And chestnuts—the folk wisdom is chestnut mares are on another level of ornery entirely.”
Oh. Wyll was definitely looking pointedly at Astarion now.
“Whatever are you looking at me for, darling?” Astarion asked silkily.
Wyll just smiled. “It’s probably a load of bull. But Stella, that mare I liked, she bore it out. Mean as anything. Very opinionated. But when you earned her trust, when she decided to do work for you, she rode like a dream. And in turn you could trust her with your life. I spent every waking hour with her, for weeks. And she came around for me. I was so proud of myself. But Father was very annoyed I was investing so much in one horse when any of the others would do just as well.”
“But you knew what you wanted,” Astarion heard himself say. “I can see it. You’re very stubborn when you want to be.”
Wyll smiled at him, and the corners of Astarion's mouth twitched up automatically. But the silence continued to stretch. Astarion saw the slight strain in Wyll’s expression. Guarded.
“Why did you really approach it, Wyll?” he said finally. “I think there’s a bit more here than trying to miraculously make it follow you miles to safety. You might have come gotten Gale. He could make you a potion to talk to the thing.”
Wyll glanced down. “You’re not wrong. That would be easiest. But…” he sighed. “I wanted to see. See if a horse might still see me as safe, as not a—you know.”
“A monster,” Astarion finished.
Wyll nodded. Looked away.
“I could have told you, Wyll,” Astarion said quietly. “I’m an expert, you know. Being a monster myself. Your looks have changed, but no more than that. I promise.”
“Thanks,” said Wyll. But it was completely hollow. And he still didn’t budge.
Astarion frowned. “What? You still—you trust an animal more than me to give you the not-monster seal of approval?”
The look Wyll gave him then was so soft and sad that Astarion felt his dead heart squeeze.
“I think you’re sweet, deep down,” Wyll said quietly. “And that’s the problem. I think you’d tell a little lie just to make me feel better. And I need the hard truth, else I won’t be able to move forward.”
Astarion glared at Wyll, shoving down all the tangled emotions at Wyll’s description of him as sweet. “You want honest? Here it is,” he blurted. “You are a stubborn, intractable fool. A bleeding-heart do-gooder down to your bones. If a devil in your ear since childhood hasn’t changed that, some damn horns surely won’t. And that’s the truth.”
Wyll brought a hand up. Rubbed at his good eye, and then exhaled shakily. “And you, Astarion,” he said suddenly. “You’re too ornery and opinionated to let your own curse define you. You're not a monster at heart. Whatever your master tried to make you, you are still you, down to your own bones.”
Astarion blinked. Looked away at the sudden barrage of sincerity in his direction. “Ornery? Opinionated?” he said, voice cracking slightly. “Are you back to comparing me to a horse?”
Wyll’s smile quivered. But it was there. “Take the comparison as close or as far as you wish.”
The mood had shifted. Astarion had managed to dredge Wyll up out of his pit of despair, for now. He wanted to capitalize on it. Reel him in a bit more. And oh, darling Wyll had left so many openings with these horse comparisons. Hm, yes, Astarion might very well like to be ridden, to be broken by Wyll’s own strong hands and—
The onslaught of horny thought ceased as, out of nowhere, Astarion watched a breakthrough happen in front of him.
The mare, ears flicking around casually, began to pick her way forward, easy as you please. Astarion could see Wyll was holding his breath. Her graceful head swung toward him, and Wyll lifted his other hand to reveal—
“An apple?” Astarion laughed. “That’s the reason she stuck around?”
The mare picked the shriveled fruit up with her lips and crunched away. Wyll grinned.
“Horses are not altruistic, you know.”
“Well, then. We really do have something in common,” Astarion replied, still waiting for an angle to take this all to flirting, but he was stopped again as Wyll let the mare sniff his hand. She blew out her nose, seemingly in approval, and Wyll moved to scratch her neck in slow circles. She nosed at him playfully. He continued to fuss over her, and he—he was crooning at her.
Something in the tone of his rich voice vibrated deliciously through Astarion, tickled at his brain in way that was so lovely he wanted to both crawl out of his skin and rub up against Wyll needily. All he could think was, yes, something soft like that, that would also be nice, maybe—
“Astarion, come here.”
Astarion snapped out of wherever his mind had sunk in the murk of his desire. His face was hot. How was his face hot.
Wyll gestured again. Astarion took a step forward. But he stopped.
“She’ll be fine,” Wyll said.
“I know she’ll be—that’s not it,” Astarion muttered. “I may have had a bad experience. A bite or two, the few times Cazador hired a carriage.”
Wyll grinned. “A taste of your own medicine?”
Astarion huffed. “Look, when I bite, it’s a nice clean puncture. But those teeth—I was masticated. Blunt force trauma!”
Wyll giggled. Gestured again for Astarion to step up next to him, which Astarion finally did with a resigned sigh.
Wyll plucked another shriveled apple from his pocket and placed it in Astarion’s palm. The mare began to sniff for it immediately.
“Just keep your hand flat, that’s right,” Wyll murmured, right by Astarion’s ear. As the mare dipped for Astarion’s palm, Wyll slipped his own hand underneath, and Astarion nearly startled at the sudden warmth on his skin.
The mare’s lips reached for the apple, so weirdly mobile. They plucked it up delicately, and—huh, Astarion hadn’t expected them to be so velvety. She crunched down on the treat, swinging her head around to eye Astarion in something like a truce.
“Don’t worry, mangy thing. Wyll won’t want me eating you,” he murmured. Wyll chuckled softly, breath gusting across Astarion’s cheek.
They were perfectly positioned, and all at Wyll’s direction. Astarion should—he should turn or maneuver or something, Wyll was right there—
“So, how are we leading her back to camp? Do you have a sack of apples somewhere?” Astarion heard himself say instead. Wyll gave him a grateful smile, which made Astarion’s racing mind, all his grand plans, stop in their tracks, for now.

Frankie is tired. Arms aching, legs screaming, ready to collapse, tired.
His mind is clouded, exhaustion taking hold as Benny hands him another backpack full of money. The wind whips across his face, the thin air making him gasp a bit louder than he intended. Benny looks at him with a worried expression, shaking his head when Frankie shrugs off the look he gives him. “Almost done, man.”
“Yeah.” Frankie calls, tossing the bag up with a grunt. He glances over to Santiago, his face caved in with dark outlines and circles around his eyes.
He knows they are all pissed at him.
Crashing the helicopter was all he had left to do, and even though Redfly said it was fine, said he picked the best option there was, there’s this sinking feeling in Frankie’s stomach. More is about to go wrong, and it’s all Frankie’s fault for not putting his foot down when they overloaded the helicopter.
How could he deny Tom’s instruction? It was a losing battle, and even though they needed him to fly, he’s sure that he would have been cast aside if he had refused another time. And the looks exchanged between them when Refly shot at the group that surrounded them once they were all out of the crash…
All Frankie could think about was your face as he crashed the helicopter into the ground, and now your face as he throws another bag to Benny. You would have been disappointed too, he thinks.
This is going to be long and torturous.
Javier watches your legs jump in the passenger seat, the tac-vest feeling tight across his chest. He reaches out, only having a little while longer of being alone with you before he has to pretend you’re just another agent-his employee. “It will be okay, hermosa.”
You nod, giving a brief, closed lip smile, wrapping your fingers around his. “I know.”
He squeezes your thigh once more, letting it rest there until they turn on to a dirt road. You tense, retracting your hand and breathing heavily through your nose. Closer and closer, you become rigid in your seat, watching the mirror to make sure the caravan of agents is still following.
“How far we going? Over.” Jason speaks through the radio, you jumping in your seat at the sound. Javier chooses to not answer, knowing that they are close and not wanting to call any further attention to themselves for those that may be listening in. He refuses to let this be another fuck up.
As his car continues down the road the trees become dense, the dirt turning to mud, and the radio picks up chatter that is new to him. Tilting his head to listen, his fingers subconsciously squeeze tighter around your leg. You grunt, grabbing at his wrist to indicate as such, but he holds on as the words through the radio become clearer.
“Someone is coming.”
“Get the boy somewhere safe.”
You frown, biting at your bottom lip and looking over to him. “The boy must be his son.”
Javier grunts, pulling his gun from his holster with one hand while keeping the steering wheel steady. You do the same with your own, holding on to the dash as Javier speeds up. If they already know that they are on their way, this likely will be a gunfight. “How old is he?”
“Less than 10. But his mother and his sister…” You trail off in confusion, looking ahead and contemplating internally. You come to a realization, shaking your head profusely before speaking. “I don’t know what those guys did, but if they are protecting the son exclusively–”
“Then Lorea may be dead.” Javier finishes your sentence, pulling the car off to the side of the road roughly. The other vehicles follow suit, everyone stepping out with weapons drawn and ready. “On foot, be ready. Supposed to be 20 guards.” He calls to the others, crouching low and leading you toward the house.
He’s relying on you, on your information that you’ve gathered so far. It should be good intel, and you don’t show signs that you think otherwise. Your hand is resting on his shoulder as you both team up, stepping through the greenery and mud methodically on the way to each building ahead.
You tap his shoulder and point, sliding your arm up so that he doesn’t have to look behind him. “Back security house, there should be 5 in there.”
He nods, glancing around quickly before bringing you toward the security building. You’re both crouched under each window, guarded and ready to take action. It’s silent, no movement to be heard beyond the wooden walls and he watches as you frown, trying to listen. You both step to the door, a silent countdown until he lifts his leg and kicks just below the handle, breaking down the door in one swift motion. He holds his gun ready, searching with it, leading and finding nothing.
No one.
You gasp behind him, his attention drawn to where you’re looking to find a poorly stacked amount of bodies and blood in the corner. It stinks, the smell permeating around him as he looks around and goes for the bathroom door. It’s unlocked, no one behind it.
You both stand there in awe, listening for anyone else to say something into your separate ear pieces, or for gunshots to be heard. Nothing comes and you’re back to shaking your head. He can see your inhale sharply, wincing as the smell circles around you. “This is…weird.” You admit, holstering your gun and looking to the pile of men again.
“I thought you said they were just here for the money.” Javi grunts, stepping out of the security house and poking his head around the corner. No one else is in sight, and no noise of their agents are around either.
“Maybe they…got caught?” You guess about Santiago and his crew, shaking your head. “I don’t know.”
“Let’s go to the main house.” Javi decides, stepping in front of you and holstering his own gun. If this is how one security house is, then so will the others, and he is less worried about being swarmed. He takes less careful steps toward the main house where the rest of his team went.
Redfly is dead, Frankie is freezing his ass off, and all he can think about is your god damned face. He knows Will and Benny are looking at him, wondering why Frankie isn’t as quick to answer them, why he’s being closed off, but he just can’t help it.
Santiago is too stuck in his own head to notice.
Redfly’s body is sitting just a few yards away, wrapped with a tarp and covered, but Frankie swears he can still see his open eyes after he was shot. The boy that shot him is long forgotten, down the mountain a ways and he feels guilty that he doesn’t care as much as he thought he would. Frankie is too focused on the fact that when he closes his eyes, it’s either you, or Tom’s dead eyes. There’s only a few more bags of money, and he’s having a hard time believing this was worth it.
“Tell me about your girl, Fish.” Benny calls, shoving his hands into his armpits to generate some heat. His hood ruffles in the wind, the fire from the money they were willing to burn flickering between them.
Frankie shakes his head, sniffling and looking down at his knees. They’re covered in dirt, cold and aching. “Don’t have a girl.” He knows it’s pointless, to even deny. But there’s a part of him that wants to keep you to himself, still. Maybe if he blows Benny off, then he won’t ask again.
He’s wrong, of course. Benny scoffs, shaking his head and looking at Will. “He had that girl Yovanna set up for the jungle in his motel room a few times.” The smile grows on Ben’s face, white teeth stark against the dark surrounding him.
“Not supposed to be mixing like that, Fish.” Will chastises, smiling anyway. The brothers and their matching smiles staring back at Frankie, taunting him.
Frankie keeps his mouth shut, cracking his neck and adjusting his feet. He takes a look over to Santiago and sees his eyes are on him too, curious as the others, and he sighs. They aren’t going to let it go, it seems. “Probably won’t see her again.” Frankie mumbles, his chin jutting closer to his chest to let some of his breath warm the inside of his jacket.
Benny laughs at him, pointing a finger in his direction. “Sure you will, Fish. Keep your head on straight and you can come back down here, free as a bird, and see her again if you wanted.”
It’s silent while Frankie thinks, finally coming to the conclusion to tell them what he found out about you. “She…she was more than just what Yovanna hired.”
Yovanna was long gone, already on her way to Australia as far as they were all concerned. Benny quirks his eyebrow up at Frankie, glancing at Will and then giving a small shove with his shoulder against his, silently asking him to continue.
A sigh falls from Frankie’s lips, shaking his head before letting it fall out of his mouth. “She’s the Siren, from Miami.”
When he looks up at them their eyes are wide and stupefied. All watching him closely, confusion clear before a laugh bubbles out of Will. “No fucking way.”
Frankie nods, a small chuckle escaping. “Yovanna hired the DEA as her whore.”
Everyone is quiet for another moment, all eyes going to Santiago. Pope’s eyes widened, looking between them all and then a burst of laughter fell from his mouth.
Benny and Will join, all of them beginning to laugh around the blazing fire until one begins to wheeze. As it quiets down, Frankie realizes that all eyes are still on him waiting for further explanation. He looks at the three of them and sighs. “The only reason I found out was because her boss called her cellphone while she was in the bathroom.”
“What a shame.” Will said, shaking his head. “Could have gotten her killed if it wasn’t you.”
Frankie winces, remembering the knife pressed to your chest that he clutched in his hands. The fear in your eyes as blood pooled and dripped down doesn’t quite leave him as he says, “I mean, I almost did.”
“Well, it’s good that you didn’t.” Benny exclaims, slapping a hand over his back. “Would have to be running from the DEA rather than a bunch of drug lords.”
Frankie gives a half hearted laugh, looking out beyond the mountain and frowning. He wonders where you are, and if Javier Pena is keeping you safe. He glances over to Redfly, his body covered and supporting the weight of a single bag of money. He doesn’t think this was worth it after all.
Panic is coursing through you at the sight; men dead both DEA and Lorea’s, mop buckets dumped and water stained with blood. Drywall is ripped from most of the walls with stacks of money hanging haphazardly from the crumbling panels.
Javier’s mouth is open in shock, and the way you reach for him to hold yourself upright shocks you, the dizziness overwhelming. “What is….what?”
He’s shaken out of his thoughts with your touch, closing his mouth and holding your arm just above your elbow to keep you upright. He turns just as Jason steps past him. “What the fuck happened?”
Jason winces at his tone, cracking his neck. “Remaining security guards were ready for us, but most of these guys were already dead. Looks like they were cleaning up.”
“Lorea?” Javier presses, stepping toward Jason as if to pounce.
Jason doesn’t react, giving a half-hearted shrug. “Dead.” He points, moving toward the staircase. “Upstairs, if you want to see for yourself.” His eyes flash to yours sympathetically, then turning to go up the stairs.
Javier looks to you, squeezing your arm gently before letting go and leading the way to the master bedroom. You attempt to follow him, slowly climbing the stairs until Javier is out of sight ahead of you.
You’re sweating, clutching onto the stair rail and to the walls that are still standing as images of being in here only a few days ago go through your mind. It feels hard to breathe, seeing the blood smeared on the walls and the bodies piled in a corner or being moved by DEA men.
You weren’t used to this-only ever dealing with people that were alive and putting them behind bars. Never a raid like this-you weren’t ready for it.
You gasp, shocked as you step into the master bedroom where the dresser has been pushed to the side, the wall covered in holes and Lorea on the ground.
Behind his dead body is a dark room with still working security cameras, and a pile of money that has been combed through. The walls in the main bedroom have been torn from the studs, drywall and wood scattered around with torn and crumpled bills. It’s almost unbelievable, how things have been left. Did Frankie do this?
You begin shaking your head, whispering mostly to yourself, “I don’t understand.”
Javier comes up behind you, the stress and anger roiling off of his body before he gently grasps your arm. “Your friends got what they wanted out of this it looks like.” He gruffs out, pouting in a way that typically annoys you. Currently, you’re unsure if he’s angry and that alone stresses you out.
You turn to him, frowning. “This isn’t what I thought it would be Javi–”
“Don’t.” He stops you, turning to look at Jason and the others in the room who are still occupied. He closes his eyes, breathing heavily through his nose. When he turns back to you, you are now sure that he is angry, no question. “You need to go downstairs, go sit in the car. I have to do damage control with Stechner.”
You go to protest him, shaking your head defiantly. “Well, let me help–”
“No.” He huffs, adjusting his stance to stand farther away from you. “You’ve done enough.”
You step back blindly, looking over to Jason who is eyeing you curiously, David who is pretending to not notice and taking photos of Lorea. Tears begin to well in your eyes as you walk down the steps to the front corridor, stopping in your tracks at the opening.
You breath starts to come heavily, difficult to push past your mouth. You lean forward, hands on your knees and let some tears fall. This is not how this was supposed to go. Frankie was supposed to get in and out. They weren’t supposed to kill this many people.
You feel guilt roiling in your stomach, looking around briefly to see if anyone is watching you while uncontrollable tears are rolling down your face. You aren’t able to comprehend how this happened-you thought you did everything right. You did what you were told, as much as you were told with only a few hiccups along the way.
Frankie was a hiccup.
The idea that Javi had been right flashes through your mind, shaking your head at yourself almost immediately. No, that can’t be right. But how did you seriously believe that Frankie and all of them would just sneak in for money and leave without hurting someone?
Your heartbeat slows down as you lean against the door frame and look out into the jungle, watching the leaves sway in what little wind there was. You glanced toward the direction of Javier’s vehicle, not seeing a soul in the yard. Turning to look into the room you’re at the threshold of, you also didn’t see anyone.
Frankie had said they were here for a payday.
Your eyes lock on a hole in the wall, the plaster thrown about and piles of money stacked haphazardly in between the studs. You wonder why they didn’t take all the money, looking to a duffle bag that is currently empty, labeled “DEA” on the outside.
Your mind sparks with interest, looking over the duffle and finding yourself suddenly in front of the hole in the wall, duffle in hand. You give a final glance around, still alone, and begin blindly reaching into the wall and shoving the duffle full of money.
To be honest, you don’t really know what you’re doing. You keep hearing voices from above you, the movement of Javier, Jason and David, but it doesn’t stop you from almost filling the bag full.
You step out into the yard, trudging in the direction of Javier’s car and throwing the duffle into the floorboard of the passenger seat. Maybe this did go all to shit, and maybe you were going to lose your job, but you weren’t going to go empty handed.
Javier is trying desperately to keep his cool. He couldn’t help the coldness toward you when he asked you to go down to the car. He needed to start planning how he was going to handle Stechner.
That son of a bitch was going to fire him.
You were silent as you left, too dumb founded and concerned to really have anything else to say. He knew you weren’t prepared to see this; you had trusted what you were told more than you let on, it seems.
“Boss.” Jason tilts his head for him to come closer, looking back to the security cameras. “Looks like they haven’t deleted any files for the past week. We can likely see who did this–”
“I know who did this.” Javier huffs, crossing his arms and looking over his shoulder to see who is listening. “Get rid of them.”
Jason’s eyes widen, shaking his head briefly. “What? But we could–”
“If it is a week’s worth then she’ll be on it.” He bites out as quietly as he can manage. “And if we only get rid of her, it will look too suspicious to only have some of it. We have to get rid of it.”
“We could say it got damaged with gunfire, or that he was in the middle of reviewing and deleting–”
“No.” Javier finishes, feeling a throbbing in his head suddenly. Clean up was always the worst part with these raids, and now there were children involved. “All of it, gone. You have at max 30 minutes before Stechner starts rubbing our noses in it, so get it out of sight.”
Jason nods, agreeing that the wrath of Stechner’s connections was not worth throwing a rogue military special unit under the bus.
No matter how badly Javier wanted Frankie to suffer.
The pricklings of jealousy are roiling through him as he takes the stairs down, half expecting you to be standing there waiting for him in defiance. When he doesn’t find you, he takes a deep breath and leans against an open hole in the wall.
His eyes catch on the stacks of money, biting at the inside of his cheek at the temptation. Who would miss this, exactly?
There’s no opportunity, David coming down the stairs with paperwork and Jason following shortly behind him, confirming that everything had been deleted. Javier can feel his phone ringing in his pocket as he starts his trek to his car, the top of your head coming into view.
He looks down, seeing Stechner’s caller-id and silencing his phone automatically. His stride speeds up, launching his door open to see you leaning forward with your elbows on your knees, crying into your hands.
An ache in his chest takes over the frustration as he climbs into the driver’s seat placing a gentle hand on the back of your neck. You jump at the contact, lifting your head to look at him briefly before you try to suppress your tears.
“It’s okay, hermosa.” He coos, pulling your face toward his and pressing his lips to the crown of your head.
You try to suck in air harshly, wiping at your face and shrinking away from him. “This is all my fault.”
Javier isn’t as quick as he would like to say no, debating internally of whether or not to point out things he finds to be true. If you hadn’t stayed an extra day, not answering his phone call and spending it with Frankie, then maybe they would have captured Lorea, maybe they all would be keeping their jobs.
Instead he is silent, rubbing his thumb back and forth over the curve of the back of your neck, sighing. “Let’s go back to the office before we get in any more trouble.”
You’re sitting on Javier’s couch again, dumbstruck and numb.
You were fired, of course.
Being shipped back to Miami by the end of the week is what the ambassador had said. “You’re still welcome to work for the DEA there, but we have no further assignments for you here.”
Javier was the last to enter Noonan’s office, watching each of you get canned in different ways. David was being moved to another division, Jason was being shipped off to California, you were being sent home, and Javier…
You dreaded to think about what would be happening with his position.
He asked you to go to his place, slipping his key to you and brushing past your shoulder without another glance before he was called into Noonan’s office. You weren’t completely sure what Javier would want to say to you in the privacy of your home, and you hoped he understood.
You felt like a fuck up.
His door was pushed open before you had much more time to spiral, his suit jacket off and over his shoulder, his eyes finding yours. “Sorry, it took longer than I thought.”
“What did he say?” You ask quietly, beginning to pick at the skin around your thumbnail.
Javier clocks it, throwing his jacket on the back of a chair and slipping off his shoes at the table. He strides over, giving a soft smile before settling next to you and grabbing for your hands. “He asked what I was thinking, asked if I thought stepping away from the cartels was worth what Lorea potentially had.”
“And?” You were impatient, clasping your hands tighter and worrying your bottom lip.
He shrugs. “I told him I had good intel, said it was worth the risk.” Your eyes can’t help but look over to the duffle bag you dropped by your other bag of belongings. He brings your attention back to him by saying, “Let me come home with you.”
You’re shocked, furrowing your brow and pulling your hands away from his. “What?”
“I quit, and I don’t want to go back to Texas just yet.” He shrugs, almost nonchalantly except you know better-his eyes are telling a different story. The apprehension behind them, the way they watch your facial expressions.
“I-I don’t know if I’m going to go back to Miami or not yet, Javi.” You sigh, looking to the floor. Part of you thinks you need to return to Utica, to hide away for as long as possible and forget about all of this. About the jungle, about Javier, about Frankie.
Javi’s hand brushes against your cheek, subconsciously leaning toward him. “I wouldn’t mind seeing the snow.” He says quietly, smirking before correcting himself. “If you’ll have me.”
Your heart beats faster, tilting into him and smiling. “You wouldn’t even stop in Texas first?”
He shrugs. “Maybe for a week, to let my dad know what is going on but…I would meet you wherever you wanted me to.”
“Why?” The question falls out of your mouth, unable to be stopped. You and Javier had been back and forth, and you weren’t necessarily opposed to this–whatever this was.
It was mostly just complicated.
Javier smiles almost shyly at you, scratching his fingers at the base of your skull. “I care about you.” He says simply, leaning forward and brushing his lips against yours but pulling back before fully committing to the act. His eyes searched yours, asking for permission.
You met him the rest of the way, leaning in to press your lips to his and shutting your eyes tightly. Javier groaned into your mouth, bringing his other hand up to the other side of your face and holding you to him.
He pulls away for a moment, face flushed and his eyes closed. “I don’t just care about you. I just…do you need me like I need you?” He questions, opening his eyes to look into yours.
They’re wide, a dark chocolate brown that you wish you could swim in to forget all your worries, but his question has you unsure. “I don’t know what you mean, Javi.”
He pulls away, clasping your hands in his again and running the pad of his thumb over your knuckles. “I mean that…if you and I aren’t in the same room, then I’m thinking about you.” You pauses, pressing his lips to one hand and then the other. “If you’re in trouble, then I want to get to you.”
Javier leans back forward, pressing his mouth to yours and letting his tongue swipe briefly around before mumbling against your lips. “And if you’re not the one on top of me then–”
“I get it.” You mumble back, pressing your lips back to his and bringing your fingers up to mess up his curls.
He groans again, his question forgotten as you straddle his thighs and slide a hand under his shirt and up to his chest.
You laugh as he pushes your shirt up, helping you undo your bra and remove everything from the waist up. His lips sear into the skin of your chest, burning into you like a brand.
It’s quick, faster than normal how you both become completely naked and his hands are squeezing at your hips to get you sinking on to his cock. His eyes are rolling back into his head as your nails dig into the meat of his shoulders, riding him slowly and carefully.
He squeezes your hips harder until you yelp, almost in pain, just so that he can hold you up and thrust himself into you instead of having you do the work.
The sweat covering you starts to cool with his breath fanning over you, both of you silent beyond grunts and moans. He’s focused on your center, his thumb snaking to your front to press gently into your clit, his eyes snapping up to watch you orgasm around him.
He follows you over that cliff, letting you collapse into him and his arms wrapping around your back, stroking up and down your spine.
It’s a moment or two before you lean upright, smiling down at him and brushing the fringe off of his forehead. “I think that I need you too.” You whisper, watching the smile spread across his face.
“Yeah?” He asks lightly, pressing a kiss in between your breasts before playfully biting at one nipple.
You laugh again, nodding along with him. “I think I’ll go to Miami to start, though. And you should go to Texas.”
He grumbles, half-heartedly agreeing before mumbling. “Yeah, okay.”
Two weeks later
You’re sitting cross legged in an almost empty apartment in Bogatá, packing up the final bag of your belongings. Another stack of money is being wrapped in a shirt, folded neatly with a pair of jeans as if nothing is wrong with it before being placed carefully into the suitcase.
You had put as much as you could into your bank account without raising suspicions, but the whole thing was nerve wracking to begin with. You phone is ringing incessantly somewhere, and you blindly reach for the last place you left it.
Pressing it to your ear, you answer. “Hello?”
“Hermosa.” Javier says through the speaker, a clear smile in his voice. “You lose your phone again? You need a new one?”
“No, no…” You trail off, looking to the turned off burner phone you had left on your kitchen table. You pick it up, fiddling with it as you pace. “How’s Texas?”
“Oh fine.” He grumbles, shuffling around something before the click of a door reaches your ears. “Wanted to make sure you were on your way to the airport.”
“Just about, the car is on it’s way.” The burner phone comes to life in your hands, the screen a bright blue before it settles and tells an incorrect time. “Everything is basically packed though.”
“Good.” Javier pauses and you can sense his nervousness.
“What is it Javi?” You ask with a small chuckle, crossing your arms.
“Just wanted to make sure it was still okay to fly to Miami in a week?” He asks. You can picture that he is running his hand through his hair right now. “You’ll only have been back a week, and I don’t want to impose–”
“You’re not!” You exclaim. “I’m looking forward to seeing you. Don’t back out on me.”
“Alright, alright.” He laughs, then launching into something his father did the night before and complaining that he is getting called by the Sheriff’s office to become a deputy. “They want me? A retired DEA agent?”
“Well your ass would look great in their uniforms.” You coo, zipping up the suitcase and setting it by the door.
He grumbles, complaining a bit more before finally asking for you to have a good flight, and to let him know when you have landed, even with the time difference.
You make the promise, hearing someone honk at the front door and hanging up quickly before exiting the apartment and tossing the key under the mat.
After loading up your bag and getting comfortable in the back seat, your phone begins to ring again. You groan out loud, looking down to your hand where you are still holding the burner phone and your daily phone, and see that it is not the one you had expected. The number is not one you know, and obviously not saved in the contacts, but your heart begins to beat faster.
The burner rings for a third time before you snap out of wondering who it could be, flipping it open and bringing it to your ear. You listen for a moment, frowning when there is no clear indication of who it could be. “Hello?”
A sigh you’ve heard. “‘You alright?” Frankie gruffs through the speaker, quiet but calm.
“How the hell did you get this number?” You ask just as quietly.
“Remembered a few digits. Sue me.” He bites back, and you feel yourself heating at the thought. Frankie as he looked through your phone to see Javi calling you over and over, also going to the settings to find what the number to the phone was. You’re not sure if the heat is anger or want.
“What the fuck happened?” You launch into questioning him, asking why they had done what they did, trying to not frighten the driver that was pretending to not listen.
“It got all screwed up, and I ended up more broke than before.” He sighs after listening to your rant, your questions drilling into him. You think that maybe he is actually relaxed somewhere, resigned.
You glance down to your purse between your feet, some of the money you had taken in your own wallet. “You didn’t even get any of it?”
“Oh, we got some. Lots, even.” He laughs ruefully. “But it was too much for the helicopter, and Redfly died and–we got enough to get us out of there.”
You hum, slightly disappointed for him. You think briefly that you should tell him you were able to get some of the cash, but then quickly decide against it.
The driver pulls up into the airport temporary parking, popping the trunk and pulling out your bags for you.
“Frankie, I have to go.” You sigh.
“Where?” He scoffs, not believing you.
You roll your eyes, looking around and seeing that driver has already left, and you’re about to be late for security. “I have to get on this flight. Go home.”
“Miami?” He asks, suddenly excited.
“Well, yeah I–”
“Let me pick you up.” He interrupts.
You pause, standing on the sidewalk with the burner pressed to your ear, your other phone in your hand. Finally, after a long moment of silence with Frankie patiently waiting on the other end, you’ve decided.
“My flight lands at 4.” You confirm.
You almost hear him smiling. “I’ll be there.” He says quietly, a silent promise following his words.
You click the phone shut, looking around you briefly before tossing the burner into the nearby trash, stepping toward the entrance to get your bags checked. Frankie could memorize your new number later.

Gambit of Crystal Peak (she/they, aromantic, possibly ace as well but who knows)
Species: Cricket
Design based of: House Cricket
As a toddler, Gambit was part of a large and poor family. When she grew a little older, she was your typical troublemaker, ending up in places she shouldn't be because her family was busy working to keep everyone fed. She would often get lost, hurt or dirty from playing outside constantly. Kind of a wild child.
Then, at some point, a load of caravans with merchants was passing by. They are usually a family of their own, with rows and rows of homes and shops on wheels, passing by the roads like a train. Gambit got invested and during their stay near home, she got around helping the merchants and traders, earning her first dime.
As the merchants were to leave, Gambit insisted to come along. It wouldn't be the first time the folks of the caravan would take bugs with them as long as they would help with work. Gambit was stocked for it and her family agreed that she'd be better off with them, seeing the world but still having someone to keep a watchful eye on her.
Gambit traveled with them for years, seeing various places and kingdoms, both through hardships of the weather and people, thieves and welcoming bugs with shelter. The caravan folks helped her grow some communication skills and thought her many songs and stories she would often whistle through work.
At some point, they arrived and stopped at Hallownest. Intrigued by the mines, she went to explore the place. Well attuned to the sounds, she could hear the crystals "sing", soon learning from the miners that those are charged with energy used to power devices. She was practically a natural at hearing them, surprising miners to the point of asking her to stay and work for them and at first, she denied, having her current "family" with the merchants.
However, as the caravans lingered within Hallownest due to good business, Gambit got to visit the mines as well as the miners working there. They acted like a big family, just like her merchant folks. She got close with few of them, got introduced to the director of the mines, Cineraria (AKA Dusty), Galo the supervisor, the musicians... her core felt "at home" so she started to doubt her decision from earlier.
What completely sold her on it is when she was introduced to the dynamite! Blowing rocks and crystals up brought back the rush she had as a kid when she scaled dangerous cliff sides on her own or running for her life from an enraged wild critter! She decided to focus on becoming a demolition expert of Crystal Peak! The merchants understood, as once again, it wasn't the first time someone leaves the caravan crew in pursuit for something greater. They bid the teen Gambit goodbye with hopes to see her again some day. Gambit never cried so much in her life, both from joy and sadness.
:
Time has passed, many issues arose at the kingdom of Hallownest. Nobles demanded greater distribution and shipment of powered crystals, life got quite busy at the mines. Still, the miners persisted, sticking together as a family, looking after each other, sharing burdens and grief of lost miners, sharing food and shelter... Through sacrifices of Dreamers, the Vessel, the disappearance of the King, the silence of the Queen, the mystery of the Great Knights... they persisted as long as they could...
This made Gambit grow a calmer poise. She learned to be serious and not mess around. She wasn't the smartest but she knew about living a life more than some miners every did. She persisted and so did her family.
Then, one day, when traveling back to the mines from the Crossroads, she heard a faint cry....
THE COMIC STARTS
FURTHER STORY, FUTURE COMIC SPOILERS BELLOW! (if I ever continue it that is!)
:
Gambit took the grub as her own and did her best to raise it. Once it pupated, she learned that the mystery child was some kind of butterfly. It quickly became adored by the miners as there weren't a lot of kids left at the mines' community.
A lot of folks fled due to the slow and steady decline of the kingdom's state. Those who could flee did and those who didn't have anywhere else to go stayed with hopes that them sticking together will be enough to keep everyone safe.
Given the name Silva by Dusty, the little butterfly was a little troublemaker of her own. It was uncanny how much she resembled Gambit as a child, wondering off on her own, getting lost within the mines, almost getting gravely injured... Gambit finally got the taste of her own medicine. She cursed her younger self for not realizing the dangers but in the same time was proud how much Silva was also learning and gaining experience this way.
As she grew, the mines got worse. The reappearance of the infection was a disaster. Lockdowns around the kingdom begun to take place, mines included. Few miners got infected as well. They were losing their friends and families to it...
Silva just hit her teen years when this happened. They struggled to survive and hide from the miners who lost themselves to dreams. Gambit, unfortunately, was losing herself in this too.
Seeing her family members no longer being themselves, she focused on protecting Silva, keeping her safe. Unfortunately, the pressure allowed her own mind to slip away... she was no longer strong enough.
Her mind was running after Silva to keep her close and safe but in reality she was almost hurting her. Silva fled to the Hallownest Crown, no longer having space to hide and run from Gambit, she hid behind the large statue. Gambit, in her foggy infected mind, went after and slipped off the cliff to her death... Silva was alone.

You know, having just got into Castlevania (and watched all of it plus Nocturne in like. A week flat), I am now, naturally, in the "reading all the fanfics" stage. I've noticed that theres some disagreement about who would be the best cook among Trevor, Sypha, and Adrian. Some people say "oh Adrian has the fancy upbringing! He'd cook!" Some people say "Trevor would be the cook! He'd appreciate the nice things when he actually has time for them!"
Guys. Please.
Trevor was buying easy food off whoever he could since he was twelve. He can probably make the most with the least, but nothing fancy. He'd have extremely limited experience cooking in a real kitchen.
Adrian is canonically shown to be able to cook at least reasonably well, though simple dishes (baked fish, etc).
Sypha probably knows the most sheer variety of food, having grown up in a nomadic caravan. She's probably memorized a ton of recipes and has been exposed to a bunch of exotic spices, just for having been all over the place and being part of a people that values memorizing knowledge. But again, most of her cooking experience is probably around a campfire.
So when theyre on the road, Sypha probably gets ingredients (bc Trevor will just get whatever's cheapest), and Trevor makes it into proper food. When they're at home, Trevor is banished to sous chef tasks (stir this, chop that), while Sypha dictates recipes and Adrian does most of the actual cooking (since he knows how to use an actual kitchen).
