APRIL 3RD, SATURDAY, 9:31 PM. A HIDDEN NOOK IN SOMA SOHO. FT. @milo-pierce. ( 🎵)
Jessica has always been very good at playing nice. Some soft skills weren’t as needed in a time of war, with fists and threats making more of a statement in Famine, but the gangs had instituted peace. Peace of a sort, anyway, for now—fraught with tension, perhaps, but ultimately calm. So Jessica made her rounds today, showing a measured magnanimity despite everything that Pestilence had done to Famine since exactly two months ago—ending the truce, threatening them at Ravi’s party, betraying the arrangement that had done all of them good. Today, she stood in front of a hurting Horseman and a wounded Seraphim and showed—with a fresh face, tousled brown hair falling in waves down her back, and a small smile on her face, replaced by a somber look when needed—that she was at her best. That though they were faltering, she, and Famine, hadn’t missed a night of sleep.
But it wasn’t only the Horseman she noticed at Ricardo’s funeral. When she saw an old friend, familiar from visits to the Hippodrome for Famine, she couldn’t help slowing as she passed him, idly asking as she glanced at her watch, “I think we’re overdue for a catch-up, aren’t we?” The details came later via text, Milo’s name listed simply as Milo P. (not yet blessed with emojis) on Jessica’s phone: an underground cocktail bar owned by a friend of a friend in Soho. Directions, in case he couldn’t find it. And the message, because pest is closed :( x Boo-hoo.
It didn’t take long for Jessica to find a spot she wanted, far enough away from the very small crowd of VIPs, and to settle in with a gooseberry chaat margarita as her security waited, eyeing her from the main bar. Then she heard a sound and glanced up, her smile widening as she saw the newcomer. “Milo Pierce,” she greeted, standing and holding her hand out to shake his. Her Panthère de Cartier bracelet glinted in the light, stark against the black of her Versace dress. “You and Pestilence. I never thought I’d see the day.” She grinned, motioning for him to sit. “It’s nice to see you for the first time in... four months, maybe?” Back when life had been easier, and he’d just been yet another man trying his luck at the blackjack tables. “And congratulations. Seraphim looks good on you.”

Local laws and etiquette.

weak endeavors chapter four: instinct
@soulxmakaweek
Summary: For SoMa Week 2019. Soul’s an underground boxer who’s just trying to make some extra money to start his own life, it’s not his fault that his trainer’s daughter seems to catch his eye, and he can’t seem to stop her from wiggling her way into his life. Mature for adult language and situations.

Archive of Our Own Link: https://archiveofourown.org/works/18549988/chapters/4396711
Sorry this chapter is a day late, I’m a teacher and had a tough day yesterday so I didn’t have a chance to finish proofing it. Here’s the chapter now though! Enjoy!
Trivia night use to be the worst, but with Maka on the team, Soul actually felt proud.
It had been something Blake had started a few months back to bring in customers to the bar, and Soul typically worked on those nights because people seemed to actually enjoy trivia. After Maka had begun to show up and play until the bar closed (and distract Soul), Blake had decided to let Soul have trivia nights off. Currently, their team consisted of Maka, Soul, Kilik, and Kid. The remainder of the group was working, besides Tsubaki, who was trying her best to fight off a cold.
Their group stood around a cocktail table, each of them with a drink in hand and eyes glued onto the T.V. screen in the back of the bar. It was an app game of some sort, where each team put their name in. A question would then pop up on the T.V. and the teams would have to answer within a given time limit. So far, there were only three teams playing, but their team was in the lead by two hundred points.
Maka was tucked against Soul’s side, his arm around her waist as they laughed at a joke Kilik told them. Another month had come and gone, a month since Soul had woken up to a hungover Maka cuddled into his chest. A month of his heartbeat picking up a little more every time she touched him or left one of her casual kisses.
“Oh, I know this one,” Maka gasped as she looked at the app on her phone quickly, tapping rapidly on one of the answers. A green check mark appeared on the screen and the team received two hundred more points.
The next questions flashed on the T.V. screen. What does the term ‘piano’ mean?
“Pick B,” Soul said as he sipped on his drink. Maka blinked at him for a moment before picking the answer, to be played softly. A green check mark flashed on the phone again, and the team got another two hundred points. Maka looked up at him and smiled.
“How did you know that?”
“I play piano.”
“Really,” Maka turned towards him and Soul let his arm drop, already missing her warmth, “how come I never knew that?”
“Never came up,” Soul finished the last of his drink, “I’m gonna grab another drink. Want anything?”
“Nope,” Maka smiled at him again and looked back at the T.V. as Kilik said to press answer C. Soul smiled as he watched her and leaned down to press a kiss to the top of her head before walking to the bar.
“You’re in it, man,” Blake said once he arrived to help Soul.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Sure, keep telling yourself that.”
Soul rolled his eyes and took his drink. When he joined the others, the round for trivia night was over and they had won. Maka looked happy as she talked to the others and Soul slid into the conversation.
“I didn’t know you were into the arts,” Kilik said as Soul joined, “you know, I’m in the visual arts program as Uni. They have a pretty good music program too.”
“You should apply,” Maka gasped, turning to slap Soul on the chest, “it’s perfect.”
“Whoa, easy there,” Soul looked at the group, “I haven’t played in a while, I just mess around with writing stuff. The only piano I have is some electric keyboard I found on the side of the road a few months ago. Plus, I work at two dead-end jobs. I don’t have money for a University.”
“There’s scholarships,” Kid spoke up, “and I think my father made sure there were enough for at least five admissions per program. He’s good at that kinda stuff, thought I think five is a little high.”
“Yeah, and loans,” Maka chimed in, “I used loans, which suck because you have to pay them back, but I could help you fill out paperwork.”
“I’m good,” Soul took a sip of his drink, “besides, I don’t even think I wanna go back to school.”
“You don’t think,” Maka tapped his head with her finger, “that’s for sure.”
“Hey, watch it blondie.”
Maka stuck her tongue out at Soul before leaving to use the restroom. He watched as she walked away and into the hallway that lead to the restrooms. He turned back to Kilik and Kid who were now debating the pros and cons of college admissions. Soul wondered how he tolerated the two whenever they began to debate.
“Why haven’t you thought about school, Soul?” Kilik asked, trying to get out of the conversation with Kid.
“Dunno,” Soul shrugged, “money and timing mostly.”
“Well, like you said earlier, you’ve got two jobs now,” Kid said, “and you’ve been in this area for, what, a year now? Do you think you’re going to move somewhere else any time soon?”
“I haven’t thought about it, but you never know.”
“I think you should at least tour,” Kilik finished the last of his own beer, “just to check out the place. It’s a history school, so about half the classes revolve around the history or your major and when you graduate, you have a certification in the history of whatever you’re majoring. I’ll have a certification in modern-era sculptures and architecture.”
“Maka told me you did a lot of sculptures. What do you use?”
“Mostly metals. I like to heat them up and see how they react.”
“Pyromaniac,” Kid smirked. Kilik punched the other man in the shoulder and then went to get himself another drink.
“If you want a tour I can set one up,” Kid said, turning towards Soul, “since my father’s out of town right now I have been taking over some of his duties as dean. I can arrange a private tour, have you introduced to some professors as well.”
“Thank Kid, but I don’t really think that’s my kinda crowd.”
“Just think about it.”
“Okay,” Soul’s eyes flicked to the hallway Maka had disappeared down, “I’ll think about it.”
“I grabbed another one for you too Kid,” Kilik joined the guys again, putting down a second beer bottle, “when does the next trivia round start?”
“How long has Maka been gone?” Soul asked, looking for the clock in the bar.
“I don’t know,” Kid replied, looking at his watch, “maybe ten, fifteen minutes? But the women’s restroom is usually a pretty long wait.”
“Yeah, but there’s not too many girls here tonight,” Soul took a sip from his beer before putting it down on the cocktail table, “I’ll be right back.”
“So protective,” Kilik sighed as Soul walked away.
Soul made his way towards the hallway, mumbling excuse me as he pushed past a few people. As he got closer, he heard a familiar, rugged voice echoing from the hallways followed by Maka’s own retorte.
“I said,” Maka snarled as Soul rounded the corner, “no thanks.”
As the scene unfolded, Soul felt the voice inside of his head laugh madly.
Maka was pushed up against the wall, eyes made of fire as Ragnarok leaned forward, trapping her in with one arm pinned against the wall and the other one beginning to creep up her thigh, fingers threatening to push up under her skirt.
“Come on, sweetheart,” Ragnarok smirked, “I’ll be the best you’ve ever been with, I can promise that.”
“Get your fucking hands,” Soul growled, snapping the two’s attention to him, “off my girl.”
Before Ragnarok could retaliate, Soul was down the hallway. He swung and landed a punch on Ragnarok’s cheek, making the man stumble backwards, but ultimately freeing Maka from the intrusion. She hissed his name at him as she reached out and gripped the front of his shirt, tugging for him to follow her and leave the situation.
“You mother fucker,” Ragnarok laughed, rubbing the blood from his mouth as he turned to face Soul, “it’s fine, take your slut and run off.”
“What did you say?”
“You heard me.”
“No, I don’t think I did,” Soul moved towards the man again, ignoring Maka’s plead for him to back off. “Say it again. Say it again and see what happens. I knocked your ass down once, I can do it again.”
“I said,” Ragnarok loomed over him, but Soul’s presence filled the hallway, “take your fucking slut and run off. It’s okay, I’m sure she’s working with her pussy of a father to make some extra money. Nothing wrong with a little side work, sweetheart, and I am willing to pay.”
Soul hadn’t know what it meant when people said they saw red, but in that moment, it finally clicked.
His fist went flying and the two men began to fight. Maka hollered for help behind them, but neither of the men seemed to hear her. As Soul dodged one of Ragnarok’s punches, he heard the voices of Kilik and Kid from down the hall, along with some other guys as they came to break up the fight. Soul was pulled away, and something silver caught the corner of his eye.
Maka stood in front of him, raising her hands to touch his face, eyes inspecting a bruise forming on his cheekbone, but behind her Ragnarok had pulled out a switchblade, and swung it open. His arm arched and he brought it down, and suddenly everything was in slow motion. Soul yelled for Maka and she began to turn around, eyes wide. Then, he broke free of the grip Kilik and a stranger had on him, shoving Maka to the side and watched as the blade narrowly missed her, but landed on the new target -- him.
There was a scream, some yelling, and Soul watched as blood began to soak the front of his shirt. But, a fist connected with the side of his head and then all he saw was black.
---
Soul woke up to the smell of antiseptics and the warmth of a hand in his.
He didn’t open his eyes because he could already feel the brightness of the room behind his eyelids, but he listened because there was another person in the room that he could feel. And there were words, words he couldn’t quite make out, but if he listened closely enough …
“Baby, I just … I’m worried. I don’t wanna see you go down the path your mom and I went down,” Spirit’s voice sounded far away but Soul knew he was in the room.
“I understand Papa,” it was Maka who was holding his hand because as she spoke, he felt her grip tighten, “but this isn’t you and Mama. Soul and I, what we have going on, it’s … different. We’re friends.”
Spirit added something else, but there was a pull inside of Soul towards sleep and the next thing he knew he was waking back up, this time blinking his eyes open.
“Well shit,” Blake was sitting next to his bed, hair a bit disheveled but a loopy grin plastered to his face, “there’s the ugly bastard.”
“What are you doing here,” Soul groaned, closing his eyes again, “and why do I ache so much.”
“Well, you got pretty beat up,” Blake sighed, leaning back in his chair, “from what I heard, you and Ragnarok got in a fight, he pulled a knife, and you got in the way. You had to get a few stitches there, dude.”
“Fuck,” he groaned again, touching his chest and feeling the rough pattern of stitches underneath the medical gown. He flinched, forgetting how sensitive the wound would be. “Where’s Maka? Is she okay?”
“She’s fine. She’s a little shook up but that girl is made of steel. She went to get some coffee.”
“Jesus,” Soul moved and sat up a little more, wincing at the soreness of the wound.
“Oh my God,” a voice came from the door of the room and the boys turned to see Maka standing there with two cups of coffee in hand, “Oh my God, you’re awake!”
She almost dropped the coffees as she rushed to the bedside, thrusted the cups at Blake, and then threw her arms around Soul’s neck. He wanted to tell her that she was hurting his chest, but the warmth and smell of her pushed the pain away. Soul lifted his arms, wrapping then gingerly around Maka. She pulled away after a moment, her hands moving from his shoulders to his face as she ran a thumb over his cheek.
“This is my cue to leave,” Blake said as he stood up, grabbing his cup of coffee, “I’ll let the other’s know you’re up and good.”
“I should get the doctor,” Maka said as she pulled back. Soul grabbed her wrist as she stood, Blake already out of the room.
“Stay a little long,” Soul pulled her back and Maka slid onto the cot, sitting next to him, “I don’t wanna worry about me, I wanna check on you.”
“Soul, you’re the one who got basically stabbed,” Maka rolled her eyes and moved her hand to be holding his, “I mean, seriously? What even made you think that was a smart idea.”
“Instinct?” He offered with a raised eyebrow. Maka smirked and shook her head at him. “I’d rather it be me than you in this situation.”
“You’re ridiculous,” Maka reached out again, pressing her free hand to his cheek, “I’m glad you’re safe.”
“I’m glad you’re safe,” Soul placed his hand over hers and he turned to kiss her palm, mirroring the time he did it so long ago. (Was it really only two months?) “If he hurt you … I don’t know what I would have done.”
“But he didn’t,” Maka leaned forward, pressing her forehead to his, “and that’s what matters.”
“Yeah, you’re right,” he replied.

Actually, it's even more fun for the little ones now with the advent of bumper bowling and ball ramps. Remember those fun times you had bowling when you were a kid? Guess what-it hasn't changed all that much, although it seems that there are fewer spots where you can bowl these days.

soma cocktail bar, ttdi.
was with some friends and colleagues at this bar some weeks back.. and this place is simply amazing. located on the second floor, the bar is pretty cozy, nicely decorated, not too loud or crowded, the ambiance is actually pretty comfy speakeasy bar.
we ordered two of their signature alcoholic dessert to share - the soy beancurd and the glutinous balls, both of these chinese traditional dessert is innovated like a cocktail, which is kinda fun. the soy beancurd was really really good, the best soy beancurd i have ever taste, with rum, the flavors just mix so perfectly together, it’s a must try. the  glutinous balls were disappointing though, as the alcohol could not mix well with the dessert itself, so the flavor is pretty weird and yucky.
then three of us shared a set of random cocktails, which the bartender creates based on his mood.. and all three are surprisingly nice.. of course, some is better than others, but it all comes down to personal liking. it is worth being adventurous though. the peanut butter cocktail was everyone’s favorite, the alcohol and fragrance of peanut just goes well and it’s yummy. gin cocktail was pretty standard but looks prettiest due to the rose and lychee.
i really liked this cocktail bar a lot, the ambiance, the drinks, and just the overall vibe is relaxing and a great place to chill and hang out with friends and talk about anything. and the price wasn’t too crazy as well.

13 gins, four East Imperial tonic waters, 26 bars with signature gin and tonics vying for the title of Kuala Lumpur’s Best Gin And Tonic.
This year’s East Imperial Gin Jubilee 2019 is back and bigger than ever, and gin lovers are certainly spoilt for choice.
The four-day event kicks off today an opening party at W Hotel’s Wet Deck on Oct 8. It will be followed by four days of gin and tonic workshops, guest shifts and masterclasses in various venues, before ending with the Gin Lane party at KL’s Sentul Depot on Oct 12. (For more information, visit the Facebook event page)
This year, the focus is very much on how East Imperial’s tonic waters pair with the 13 different gins.
“For this year’s Gin Jubilee, we wanted the drinks to highlight the importance of a good quality tonic water in a gin and tonic, and we’re proud to say that each and every one of the 26 drinks have accomplished that goal,” said Shawn Samuel, managing director of Wholly Spirits, the organisers of the Gin Jubilee in KL.
Indeed, the gin and tonic may seem like an easy cocktail to make, but there are certain elements of the drink that you need to be aware of.
First of all, the ratio of gin to tonic. Depending on how strong you like your drinks, you can choose between one to three parts of gin to go with three parts of tonic.
However, much depends on the gin and tonic water you are using. There is no point buying an expensive premium gin if you are only going to mix it with a mainstream tonic water bought off the shelf at the supermarket. Many of these tonic waters contain a high amount of citric acid that gives it that highly bitter, citrus-y note that most people associate with tonic water.
East Imperial’s core range of tonic waters include (from left) Yuzu Tonic, Old World Tonic, Tonic Water, and Grapefruit Tonic.
But real tonic water isn’t like that, according to East Imperial co-founder Kevin Law-Smith when I spoke to him at last year’s Gin Jubilee.
“Most of the common tonic waters in the market are not actually based on what a tonic water really is. What we had then was a soft drink – with artificial ingredients, lots of sugar and a high citric acid content – that you can’t consider as a tonic,” he said.
Law-Smith’s inspiration for his first tonic water, the East Imperial Old World Tonic, was his great-grandfather, or specifically, what was in his great-grandfather’s tumbler when he was travelling to East Africa and East Asia around 1903.
“Back then, tonic water was still being used as an antidote for malaria. That’s the real tradition of tonic waters, and I wanted to create something that resembled that,” he said, adding that he then tracked down the source of the original hand-picked ingredients that were used to make it.
The result was Old World Tonic, which Law-Smith said has half the sugar content compared to other tonics, and just a pinch of citric acid. “The Old World Tonic is a product that really lets the gin shine,” he said.
East Imperial has four tonic waters in total in their portfolio, comprising the flagship East Imperial Tonic Water, Yuzu Tonic, Grapefruit Tonic, and the aforementioned Old World Tonic. There’s also a recently launched Royal Botanic Tonic (which is not currently available in Malaysia), as well as other beverages such as the Soda Water, Grapefruit Soda, Ginger Ale and Ginger Beer
East Imperial Old World Tonic
East Imperial’s official website calls this “the champagne of tonic waters”, a “true tonic water” with only “a trace of natural citric acid” and less than half the sugar content of mainstream brands.
On its own, the tonic water is certainly a lot less bitter than most tonic waters. That distinct citric acid flavour that is so prominent in commercial brands is reduced to a mere whiff and tinge in the Old World, complemented with soft floral notes, all of which help bring out the softer and more subtle flavours in a gin better.
The Gin Jubilee bars that will be using the Old World tonic in their drinks are: 61 Monarchy (Drumshanbo Gunpowder Irish Gin), Bar Shake (Monkey 47), Bar Trigona (Rock Rose Gin), BotakLiquor (G’Vine Floraison Gin), Elements (Caorunn Gin), HYDE at 53 M (Gin Agricolo Blagheur), The Pawn Room (Scapegrace Gin).
East Imperial Tonic Water
Like it or not, most consumers and bartenders are still very much used to the flavours of modern tonic waters. Hence, East Imperial’s flagship tonic water is closer to that contemporary style than the Old World, with added citric acid, higher sugar level, and the highest quinine levels available in the market.
Recommended to go with the more classic London dry style gins, the tonic also includes top notes of Thai lemongrass and manao lime, making for a fresh, slightly citrusy sensation on the palate.
The Gin Jubilee bars that will be using the East Imperial Tonic Water in their drinks are: Beta KL (The Botanist), Flying Monkeys (Four Pillars Rare Dry Gin), Knowhere (St George Terroir Gin), Marigin (The West Winds Cutlass), Mezze (Scapegrace Gin), Pacific Standard Bar (The Botanist), The Sticky Wicket (St George Terroir Gin), Three X Co (Gin Agricolo Blagheur) and WOOBAR at W Hotel KL (Drumshanbo Gunpowder Gin).
East Imperial Yuzu Tonic
Yuzu is an aromatic sweet citrus fruit commonly found in Japan, with distinct zesty flavour, and that bright, citrusy note really shines through in the Yuzu Tonic, which has a very fruity, floral nose and palate that goes well with London dry gins and citrus-forward spirits.
The Gin Jubilee bars that will be using the Yuzu Tonic in their drinks are: Coley (Caorunn Gin), Mrs Jones’ Parlour (G’Vine Floraison Gin), Pahit (Monkey 47 Dry Gin), PS150 (Four Pillars Rare Dry Gin), The Locker & Loft (The West Winds Cutlass) and The Vault (Hendrick’s Gin).
East Imperial Grapefruit Tonic
This tonic is flavoured with something we Malaysians are pretty familiar with – pomelo. This particular tonic takes the pomelo and blends it with ruby red grapefruit, for the most zesty amd citrus-forward tonic in the range. Like the yuzu, this is also great for pairing with traditional London dry gins and citrus-forward spirits.
The Gin Jubilee bars that will be using the Yuzu Tonic in their drinks are: JungleBird (Rock Rose Gin), Pinchos Tapas Bar (Napue Gin by Kyrö Distillery Company), Soma (Hendrick’s Gin) and Tickets (Napue Gin).
Michael Cheang thinks the best tonic always has a large gin in it. Contact him at the Tipsy-Turvy Facebook page (fb.com/MyTipsyTurvy) or follow him on Instagram (@MyTipsyTurvy) or Twitter (@MichaelCheang).

In San Francisco, the Revival of the Hotel Bar
San Francisco has long had an excellent bar scene, but, until a few years ago, many of the city’s hotel bars left something to be desired. Overpriced and outdated, they also had a noticeable lack of locals.
Lately, though, San Francisco hotel bars are having a revival, with a wave of cocktail-centric spots featuring creative, accessible drinks and the city’s top bar talent. These high-profile destination cocktail bars have become places that locals and visitors alike are seeking out.
The growing presence of hotel bars with buzz has the attention of industry insiders. “Often, the arrangement is a good financial one for potential bar owners,” said Maggie Hoffman, drinks writer for The San Francisco Chronicle and author of the cocktail book, Batch Cocktails. “These spots are convenient for visitors and give tourists an opportunity to see what San Francisco is capable of, cocktail-wise. But locals definitely go to these places, too.”
One of the first signs of this turnaround was Benjamin Cooper, a speakeasy-style spot that opened at Union Square’s Hotel G in March 2015.
“I have a hard time calling that a hotel bar, and that’s a huge compliment to them,” said Morgan Schick, creative director of BVHospitality, a company that has opened a number of local bars and designed their bar programs. Best known for the award-winning cocktail bar, Trick Dog (still one of the city’s hippest spots), Mr. Schick and his partner, Josh Harris, are behind the bar programs for Charmaine’s and Villon at Proper Hotel, a trendy boutique property that opened on Market Street in the summer of 2017.
Charmaine’s opened in the hotel that November, and immediately attracted attention from local savants thanks to the duo’s stellar reputation, and for the bar’s rooftop location with views of downtown San Francisco and the bustling, warehouse-filled South of Market district. With its plush seating, fire pits and well-heeled clientele, Charmaine’s caused lines to form down McAllister Street.
The al fresco setting influenced Charmaine’s cocktail menu. “Let Me Touch Your Mind,” a coconut-rich Piña Colada layered with a Negroni when served, best sums up the menu for Mr. Schick.
“You think, ‘I’m in a classy-looking place so I’m going to drink a Negroni. But I’m also on vacation with this tremendous view, so I want to drink a Piña Colada, too,’” he said.
A more recent addition to San Francisco’s rooftop bar scene is Everdene, a standout which opened this April atop the new Virgin Hotels San Francisco. Besides taking its name from the heroine of Thomas Hardy’s “Far from the Madding Crowd,” Everdene has a lush, garden party vibe that feels far removed from the crowds below in SoMa. The drinks program consists of brightly colored, flora-heavy sippers (tequila-based “Her Majesty’s Pleasure,” with cucumbers and sugar snap peas, is an early favorite), courtesy of the lead bartender Tommy Quimby, another Trick Dog alum. Mr. Quimby also designed the drinks program for the downstairs hotel bar and restaurant Commons Club, which features spirit-steeped drinks named for original Virgin Records artists.
Over by Union Square, the cocktails at Gibson, which opened in October 2017 in the Hotel Bijou, are familiar flavors done in unfamiliar ways, said the beverage director Adam Chapman. But while you’ll find genre-bending, flavor-packed wonders like the “Clear Bloody Mary” (off menu, but available by request), made with clarified tomatoes, three types of soy sauce, and fermented ponzu, Mr. Chapman does simplify the drink menu’s language.
“Instead of saying ‘sous vide this, centrifuge that,’ we may just say, ‘Huckleberry,’” Mr. Chapman said, adding that if guests are interested in learning more, he’s happy to go deep.
Gibson’s elegant, Art Deco environs with lots of gold detailing, mirrors and high ceilings set it apart from the more understated hotel. Mr. Chapman said outside guests, many of them locals, make up the vast majority of Gibson’s clientele.
Laureate Bar & Lounge, at The Laurel Inn, a cozy, low-key property in Pacific Heights, feels even more like its own entity. A recent Monday night saw a solid crowd of regulars sipping wine and martinis around the minimalist Mid-Century Modern fireplace cut directly into the terrazzo tile.
“We’re a neighborhood bar,” said Sam McGinnis, Laureate’s bar supervisor. “We want you to feel like you’re walking into your best friend’s living room.”
Mr. McGinnis cited the bar’s relatively affordable prices — all cocktails are $12 — and their use of at least one local ingredient in every drink, as part of this effort. Their menu is made of a seasonally rotating selection of drinks (the rainbow-hued Pride Month menu includes “What’s Up, Doc?,” a carrot, ginger and tequila number), but guests can expect surefire hits on their permanent selection of classic cocktails. A pitch-perfect rye Old Fashioned, made with local bitters and served on a large ice cube, would be at home at any top bar in the city.
Tucked in a stunning remodel of a classic Japantown hotel, The Bar at the Hotel Kabuki in Japantown, located between Pacific Heights and Fillmore, has also made price point a means of reaching a local clientele — it offers a daily happy hour with $7 Highballs, alongside spiked tea-centered cocktails for two, and a large selection of Japanese whisky. The Bar is accessed directly from the hotel’s modern, light-filled lobby, but has a cooler, upbeat vibe than a typical hotel bar, complete with curated stacks of books and records.
The main cocktail menu, designed by Stephanie Wheeler (formerly of Three Dots and a Dash in Chicago), centers on Japanese Hanakotoba, the language of flowers. The Chrysanthemum is a popular choice, and a worthy order — the herbaceous, Negroni-like gin drink features local St. George gin infused with goji berry.
The bartenders are knowledgeable, and agile, too; when a menu item was unavailable, the bartender asked a few questions about my spirit and flavor profile preferences, whipping up a nicely balanced, mezcal-based version of a classic Penicillin, typically made with Scotch.
Those looking for a one-two punch of topnotch hotel drinking would do well to head back to Union Square, to the Hotel G, home of the lauded Benjamin Cooper and now, Ayala, an airy seafood restaurant and bar that opened in December — the executive chef Melissa Perfit was previously at San Francisco’s Bar Crudo.
The cocktails are courtesy of the James Beard-nominated bar director, Julian Cox, who most recently was at San Francisco’s Tartine Manufactory. He’s created a menu in close conjunction with the kitchen that’s proving to be a hit with hotel guests, locals, and, significantly, the restaurant industry crowd.
“Every night, it’s like a who’s who of chefs and bartenders coming in,” Mr. Cox said.
With these hotel bars, bartenders are finding there’s a balancing act to appeal to both hotel guests as well as locals. While Mr. Cox prioritizes light, bright drinks that pair well with seafood, along with recognizable classics to appeal to hotel guests, the drinks also have a creative bent. Popular orders include the Castrevelano “Washed” Martini, a surprise hit from the martini section of the menu, and A Diving Bell, a mezcal-centric refresher laced with gin, yuzu and cayenne. The obscure, vermouth-based Ayala Julep has been a favorite.
Mr. Cox sees it as only fitting the direction that the city’s hotel bars are taking.
“Hotels are really where the history of cocktails begins!” he said. “In the golden age of bartending, the hotels were where you wanted to go and drink.”

The Best Hotels In San Francisco
With new ownership and recent renovations, a number of San Francisco’s most iconic hotels remain the best places to stay
While San Francisco may becoming to expensive to live in, it is still relatively affordable to visit. And unlike New York City’s hotel scene which seems to grow and grow, with trendy newcomers stealing the show, many of San Francisco’s top places to stay are the same properties they have always been—despite minor name changes.
The following list is not ranked in any particular order nor does it represent the most expensive hotels—though most are on the pricer side. Our criteria included price, neighborhood, proximity to quality restaurants and attractions and overall allure.
The St. Regis
A relative newcomer (opened in 2005), The St. Regis San Francisco is located in the vibrant SoMA district affording guests magnificent views of the San Francisco cityscape. Rooms feature stylish contemporary decor in creams and dark woods, with standard features such as flat-screen TVs, crisp Pratesi linens and deep bathtubs. The hotel is home to Remède Spa San Francisco, a Forbes Travel Guide ranked four-star spa in San Francisco. The hotel is also home to the Japanese inspired Ame restaurant which features a sophisticated offering of limited edition sakes and a 300-bottle list of handcrafted wines from around the world.
The Fairmont
An institution atop Nob Hill, this luxury San Francisco hotel has been host to some of the most influential meetings and events, breathtaking weddings and personalized special occasions of the century. Each of the hotel’s spacious guest rooms and suites have been elegantly updated including flat screen TVs, luxury linen ensembles and pillow top beds. In addition to its 591 guest rooms and suites the hotel offers several dining choices including the Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar offering exotic Asian cuisine, along with the city’s best Mai Tai. The hotel offers panoramic views of the City and the Bay from high atop Nob Hill and it’s central location is a short cable car trip from the bustling Downtown, Financial District, Union Square and Fisherman’s Wharf.
The Scarlet Huntington (formerly The Huntington Hotel)
Also perched atop Nob Hill (across the street from the Fairmont) lies the Scarlet Huntington, which opened in 1924. While some of the old school charm has been compromised by the new ownership and mixture of Asian influence, traditionalists will be pleased to see the hotel’s signature red brick façade, illuminated sign, and period character have been preserved, not to mention it’s other assets—The Big 4 Restaurant and The Nob Hill Spa. Staying at the Huntington (excuse me…The Scarlet Huntington) feels like you’re in the San Francisco of old but with modern amenities and a little more flare.
The Loews Regency (formerly the Mandarin Oriental)
Positioned on the top 11 floors of a 48-story tower, The Regency in San Francisco offers breathtaking views over San Francisco Bay—along with a timeless design and modern amenities. The hotel’s central location in the Financial District places you at the heart of San Francisco, with the city’s major attractions, including Fisherman’s Wharf, Union Square and the Ferry Building, all within easy reach. Brasserie S&P, their on-site restaurant, serves fresh California fare, along with fine wine and carefully crafted cocktails. Amenities include a 24-hour fitness center and a spa with three treatment rooms, one couples’ suite, and a relaxation lounge.
Taj Campton Place (formerly Campton Place)
The quintessential landmark San Francisco boutique hotel on Union Square, Campton Place is now a part of the Taj family of hotels. For over 100 years Campton Place has been a sanctuary for discerning travelers from around the world earning “Best Hotel in the United States” in 2010 by the Global Traveler GT Tested Awards and a Michelin Star for Campton Place Restaurant.
The Ritz San Francisco
This downtown (Nob Hill) San Francisco hotel attracts guests with a sophisticated urban retreat presenting 336 recently reimagined guest rooms and suites featuring an alluring color palette of steely blue, grey and silver. According to HBA principal designer Kathleen Dauber, the new guestroom design was inspired by San Francisco’s Wilkes Bashford — one of the city’s iconic luxury department stores – and the legacy of former Mayor Willie Brown, known for his suits. The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco also features contemporary Californian dining in Parallel 37, as well as a cable car stop just outside that is ready to whisk visitors to the city’s most treasured sites. Guests will experience distinguished luxury at this timelessly elegant Nob Hill hotel, which was just awarded the 2015 AAA Five Diamond award for the 21st consecutive year.
The Omni
What the hotels that sit atop Nob Hill (Fairmont, Scarlet Huntington and Ritz) have in great views, the Omni has in location. Situated in the heart of the financial district, guests have only a short walk to Union Square, Jackson Square, The Ferry Building on the Embarcadero and many of the best restaurants in San Francisco. Guests will appreciate modern amenities in a boutique ambiance due to its Florentine Renaissance architecture. Built as a bank in 1926, the lobby is adorned with Italian marble, rich fabrics and Austrian crystal chandeliers. And Bob’s Steak & Chop House, located off the lobby on the ground floor, has carved out a reputation as one of the best steak houses in town.

When you’re a college student with a thirst for fine wine and upscale eats you face major enemy… budget constraints. Still, my friends and I managed to squeeze in a spectacular week in California for Spring Break and scratch this trip off our bucket lists with careful planning, research, and dedication.
This post is dedicated to all my fellow foodies and travelers that want to travel to the Bay Area and Wine Country and enjoy every single luxury without worrying about overstepping your budget. I’ve narrowed my top recommendations, favorite places, and insider tips.
San Francisco
Where to Stay
As a group of five college girls on a budget, hotel rooms were definitely out of the question. We did a ton of research and found great options in Airbnb, the best areas for affordable apartments in cool places for going out and getting to know San Francisco are SoMA, Chinatown, and the Financial District. We found a gorgeous apartment in the Financial District that had all the amenities you could ever dream of (lobby, gym, pool, jacuzzi, rooftop, barbecues, yoga room, etc.) and it was walking distance to Union Square, Embarcadero, and Chinatown. I definitely recommend traveling in groups of 3 or more, places are not huge, we had to share a one bedroom, one bathroom apartment  but considering the location and the apartment this wasn’t a problem at all.
What to Do
We spent four amazing days in SF and I believe we did all the “musts”, so here’s our specific itinerary for our time in the city:
Day 1: getting to know the area and grocery shopping. (Rule #1 for traveling on a budget). We went out that night, in San Francisco I would definitely recommend the bars and the laid-back places rather than the nightclub scene.
Day 2: We walked around Chinatown and Union Square, we tried to go to Mr. Holmes Bakehouse to try their so-very-famous cruffins and doughnuts but they were all sold out by the time we got there. Instead, we took an Uber to Tartine Bakery for a coffee break, and ended our day with the gorgeous view from the Twin Peaks.
Day 3: After a delicious brunch, we went to the Golden Gate Park, where we were supposed to rent bikes and ride all the way up to Sausalito, sadly the weather didn’t allow us to do this, so we ended up taking an Uber to Sausalito, with a pit stop for pictures with the Golden Gate. We spent our afternoon at Sausalito, had amazing seafood, and headed back around 7 pm.
Day 4: On our last day in SF we went to the Embarcadero Waterfront, Pier 39, and Lombard Street. We then headed for lunch near Hyde Park, did a little shopping around the boutiques in the area, and ended our day with a goodbye barbecue at our SF home.
Where to Eat
Now here’s the part you were all waiting for, and believe me it’s my favorite part too. We all know my definition of tourism is eating and trying local food, so here’s the rundown for my favorite eats in the Bay Area.
Chambers: if you want good food, great ambiance, and even better drinks, this is the place to go. My friends and I fell in love with their Crispy Pork Belly with fig chutney that basically melts in your mouth, and the Yellow Fin Tuna Tartare is also a must.
Tartine Bakery: no questions asked, this is definitely the best bakery in San Francisco. Yes we had to wait in line about 30 min to try this place, but the quiche, the croque-monsieur, the tres leches cake, and the morning bun make it all worth it.
Zazie: open 7 days a week for brunch, Zazie was our life saver when we wanted a boozy brunch on a Monday. This petite French bistro serves Eggs Benedict in every single way possible and has the best mimosas in town.
Scoma’s Sausalito: when in Sausalito, seafood is definitely a must. We originally wanted to try Fish, a local favorite, but it wasn’t as close to downtown as we thought. Nevertheless, Scoma’s did not disappoint at all, their Lobster Risotto was to die for, and the fish was so fresh you could almost taste the ocean.
Souvla: I’m seriously considering contacting the owner of this place and begging her to open a location in the East Coast. The gyros and salads in this place are some of the best I’ve ever had, and like that’s not enough they have frozen greek yogurt with Baklava crumbles for dessert and wine by the glass. This place is very affordable and a necessary stop if you love Greek food and are ever in the area.

Napa Valley
Where to Stay
Airbnb was our go to option here as well. In the Wine Country area, Napa  is definitely the last place you should stay in if you’re watching your budget, instead look for places in Fairfield or Sonoma that are only 15 min away from Napa Downtown, or Calistoga that is a little farther up but very close to the best vineyards. We stayed in a gorgeous loft in Fairfield that accommodated us perfectly and was very affordable.
What to Do and Where to Eat
Well obviously there’s only one thing to do in Napa: wine, wine, and more wine. Of course you can also rent bikes and ride through the vineyards, and walk around Napa Downtown, but at the end everything revolves around wine.
Day 1: we decided to try one of the local wineries in Fairfield, since we heard great things about them and the prices were much more reasonable than the ones in Yountville and St. Helena wineries. Our experience in GV Cellars was incredible, the wines were top notch and we fell in love with every single one of them in the tasting, the staff was extremely kind, and the view was amazing. We obviously ended our day devouring burgers in In-N-Out, because we couldn’t leave the West Coast without trying them.
Day 2: By 11 am we were ready to start our tasting at V. Sattui Winery in St. Helena, we tasted 5 of their amazing wines that are sold there exclusively, we also got to taste some of their dessert wines like the Angelica that is a fortified wine that is like nothing we had ever tasted before. The staff was extremely knowledgeable and friendly and made the experience a whole lot better. We then headed to their Artisan Deli that offers gourmet paninis, pastas, and more than 200 types of cheese. After picking our favorite bottle, and something to eat we sat down in the gorgeous picnic area to enjoy a nice day out with good wine and even better food.
After relaxing in the picnic we headed to our Cocktails 101 class at Domaine Chandon in Yountville. Here we were taught how to make 3 different types of sparkling cocktails, while we learned about the history of Sparkling Wine.
Day 3: in our last day we had lunch at the Oxbow Market, every single thing looked and amazing and it was impossible to settle for only one option. We then strolled around Napa Downtown where we mostly admired the menus of all the delicious restaurants and the sculptures of the Napa Art Walk. For our last dinner before heading home we went to Ca’ Momi, an authentic Italian Osteria that didn’t disappoint us at all. My favorite plates were the beef tartare,  the gnocchi with ricotta and fresh black truffle, and the seafood ravioli. The Angioletti which are basically fried pizza dough “churros” with organic chocolate-hazelnut cream (Californian for Nutella) were the favorite dessert on the table.

In my opinion, this trip is a must for anyone over 21. You’re probably not that used to see me writing about something besides food, but I hope you find my SF and Napa guide useful for future trips. Don’t forget to check out my Instagram (@ilpiattone) for more food pics of the trip.
Buon Appetito,
Oriana.
