Belinda Glennon, an educator, teaches ceramics classes for both adults and children. She also coordinates public school field trips. She is a graduate of the University of Central Florida.
Suze Lindsay studied ceramics at the Penland School of Craft, and returned to work as an artist-in-residence at Penland. In addition to her clay work, she has developed a unique style of figurative sculpture by manipulating forms after they have been thrown.
Maria Dondero, born in Yaounde, Cameroon, took her first pottery class in Guanajuato, Mexico. Her aesthetics draw from the history of ceramics around the world. She studied slipware from Japan.

Matt Repsher, who earned his MFA from Indiana University in 2003, was an instructor at Indiana University and Indiana University-Bloomington. After graduation, he was a resident artist at Pocosin Arts School of Fine Craft in Columbia, North Carolina.

Everyone Is Using Steroids, So Why Not You?

I was happy in my relationship, but waaay overweight.
Working in 4⭐ Hotel/Restaurants.
The girlfriend was a chef too.
Life was too good kinda weight.
Age 36, back then, I dabbled into sarms.
Basic SARMs combo for women.
6 months with Ostarine and Cardarine.
At a minimal dose, coz shit is deer.
Fasting for 24hrs once a week.
I was 135kg for 168cm.
The body was aching. EVERYWHERE.
Working 10 hrs a day/ week was not great either.
Stubborn as an ass, a few beers every day with the staff, an odd doobie and doof party in the bush, every other week.
I was happy but not smart.
As a silver lining, SARMs did help my mum tho, as she was dealing with a botched knee surgery, menopause and Diabetes.
I did have help from Southern Cross University. Shout Out !
She did from our family doctor, back in Cameroon, shout out.
No judgement, safety and long term habits.
It's tools, but you're in charge of your mindset.
4 years now, I'm comfortable with my body.
at 62kg. I hit the bag when work allows.
The odd Sambo class or Muay Thai.
Mother dearest did a walking marathon last year 5k, and took back boxing.
I can't shit on enhancing substances.
It did help. Greatly so.
I still enhance with a space cake or a spliff, every now and then.
NOW, my issue is...

HOUSTON — At POST Houston, a popular food hall, the lines stretch long for ChòpnBlọk, where the Nigerian American owner Ope Amosu offers a familiar customizable template — rice, vegetables, protein — that are deeply influenced by his West African pride, and his London-born, Houston-raised identity.

Take the Golden, a nod to the Gold Coast of West Africa — and to Mr. Amosu’s stint as a prep cook at Chipotle while still working as a corporate sales executive. The hearty meal includes smoky jollof rice with a Creole twist, plantains, roasted cauliflower and brussels sprouts, and comes with a vegan honey bean coconut curry that’s at once sweet and alluringly tangy. To top it all, customers can choose from various proteins marinated in Cameroon pepper.

“We’re not trying to convince people our food is good or worthy — we already know that it is,” Mr. Amosu said. “I am, however, trying to tell our story and welcome people in who may be nervous about going to a place that feels a bit unfamiliar.”
In food halls, strip malls and shopping centers across the United States, fast-casual West African restaurants are proliferating, and the second-generation owners behind them are at once showcasing the range of these cuisines and debunking reductive myths about them.
At the Senegalese chef Pierre Thiam’s restaurant Teranga in New York City, deeply flavored customizable grain bowls help to counter racist Western perceptions that can diminish the value of the region’s cuisine.
“I hope that it helps dispel the lies that make you think of Africa as a continent of scarcity,” Mr. Thiam said. “There’s so much abundance, and there’s so much creativity that’s coming from the continent, and we get to show them that story through our food.”

The fast-casual model allows West African chefs to preserve the region’s classic flavors as well as incorporate elements of their American upbringings in a format that is recognizable to diners less familiar with the cuisine.
“We’re creating a gateway to West African food,” said Olumide Shokunbi, the owner of Spice Kitchen in Brentwood, Md.
Like Mr. Amosu, Mr. Shokunbi attended the school of Chipotle — one of the nation’s best examples of fast-casual success. During college, he began working at a Chipotle franchise on the side as he explored opening his own business.
His Spice Kitchen adopts some central components of the fast-casual model: biodegradable serving bowls, customizable meals and a varied interpretation of storied cuisines. Since it opened last fall, the restaurant has offered salmon and shrimp alongside suya — Nigerian seasoned, skewered and grilled meats — and sides like spinach efo riro, jollof rice and grilled corn.

At Suya Suya West African Grill in Philadelphia, the owner Dera Nd-Ezuma, who developed a love for tacos after immigrating from Abuja, Nigeria, to New Jersey in 2007, takes a similar approach. To amplify traditional dishes like steak marinated in Nigerian yaji, Mr. Nd-Ezuma leans into his love of tacos and offers them filled with chicken and steak suya in the requisite brown to-go container.
“There’s a reason why our restaurants are finding success,” he added. “People want to experience this cuisine, and they want to do it in a way that feels comfortable.”
Having gone to many of the city’s more conventional Nigerian restaurants, Mr. Nd-Ezuma said he sometimes found the atmosphere intimidating.
“When I get to go to African restaurants and I try to order, the menu can be a little bit overwhelming, so I can only imagine what it’s like for non-Africans,” Mr. Nd-Ezuma said.

Citing a psychology construct called “openness to experience,” which is a high predictor of whether someone would try different cuisines, Germine Awad, a professor of psychology at the University of Michigan, said that it’s not how something is served that draws patrons in, but rather their natural curiosity levels.
The growing interest in West African food within the restaurant industry aligns with immigration trends. “The more folks that come, the higher the demand for food that’s authentic and a true reflection of that community,” Ms. Awad said.
In 1980, there were about 40,000 West African immigrants living in the United States, according to data from the Pew Research Center. By 2019, that number had grown exponentially, to 890,000. Nigerian immigrants are the largest group from the region, with the most sizable communities living in cities like Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, New York City and Washington, D.C.
The inevitable expansion of fast-casual West African restaurants will continue bringing these foodways to the forefront of American dining — an overdue change, Ms. Awad believes, in the culinary world.
“It’s not just enough to have these restaurants available to people, this cuisine has to be recognized for how complex and amazing it is,” she said. “That’s the true next step for expanding the idea of the average culinary experience in the United States.”
At Teranga in San Francisco (no relation to Mr. Thiam’s restaurant), the Senegalese chef Nafy Flatley-Ba creates dishes like chicken drumsticks marinated in baobab, tamarind and Dijon, a family specialty. Highlighting Senegalese flavors is a top priority for Ms. Flatley-Ba, but equally important is showing that women can and should play a leading role in contemporary West African dining.
“It hasn’t been easy to introduce fast-casual, yet super nutritious and healthy West African food,” Ms. Flatley-Ba said. “But I have been doing it.”

Some conventional West African diners might complain that the foods at these fast-casual restaurants isn’t traditional. But that’s not Mr. Amosu’s primary concern at ChòpnBlọk. The restaurant is a chance to revel in his heritage, by creating dishes that expand on the narratives of the region’s cuisines.
“Our stuff bangs, too, and everybody should know about it,” Mr. Amosu said. “There’s no reason why we should be so insular with the pride that we have for our culture.”
Authenticity and fast-casual service aren’t mutually exclusive, and Hema Agwu and Folusho Adeyemo, the Nigerian American owners of Brooklyn Suya in Crown Heights, Brooklyn, have no interest in compromising West African flavors to please Western appetites.

“It’s all about finding the balance of being both authentic and contemporary, you know, and open for a new audience,” Mr. Agwu said.
The menu reflects multiple cultures, integrating American ingredients like kale and avocado into their suya bowls, which can come with shrimp, chicken, eggplant or tofu marinated in suya spice. But the real common ground, Mr. Agwu said, comes on the side.
“Americans love sauce,” Mr. Agwu said. “We have to give the people what they want.”

✨The night my mindset about dating options changed✨
I have never been one to hold my tongue yet I am a woman who respects atmospheres. I have to get this off of my chest because to this day this particular situation has been on my mind. And with the changing climate of black women becoming more feminine and realizing we are all we have i want to tell a quick story of what broke the camel’s back on my realization of our reality in the US!
Disclaimer: I will admit I DO NOT have this issue with African men. I tend to have this issue with othe African diaspora who have been misplaced in countries such as American, Jamaica, Canada, etc. Which given the history ... this isn’t a surprise. This is not my driest time experiencing something like what I’m about to write, actually I’ve experienced WORSE, but I’m telling this story in the midst of my level up journey.
So me and my best friend went out to dinner to catch up . This was around February before we were on serious lockdown. Now my best friend is mixed. Her father is Puerto Rican (Portuguese and native ancestry due to colonization) and her mother is black American (Nigerian, Cameroon and European ancestry due to slavery) . She took an ancestry test 😊. She is proud of who she is and I love it. And for me I am beautifully, proudly, and fully a Nigerian queen. I am not dark skinned. My mother is high yellow and my father is dark skinned. My skin colors changes with the weather but typically I am a rich Carmel color with an organice undertone lol (I love my color).
Growing up my best friend did get special treatment due to her being mixed but she also worked hard to get where she is in life. She isn’t tone deaf and she’s fully aware of her position in society but honestly if you looked at her she looks like a regular light skinned black woman due to her tanning very dark and her native ancestry . Anyways, she is very basic. She does wear make up and she likes wearing her hair curly or in braids. The most make up she will wear is mascara and lipstick. She has great skin, “fine girl no pimple”. Me on the other hand... I’m a diva! I will not step out of my house to meet ANYBODY unless I have on makeup, a classy dress, and heels. My nails are always done, toes CHECK, hair CHECK! That’s just me , I’m high level.
We went to a 5 star Japanese restaurant. I noticed many white men who were looking my way and I was okay with it because I’m here to look beautiful and find potential sponsors (anywhere I go). The old me would reject the idea but the mature me is fine with it. When our meal was over we went to valet to wait for our cars. Two Jamaican-American men were also waiting on their cars. The were both very dark skinned. They began to start conversation with my best friend . Literally BOTH of them. It was like they were competing to see who could get her number. They were asking about where she was from because she was so beautiful and that many women in Jamaica look like her. She told them she was mixed with Puerto Rican and they jumped with joy because she was a Caribbean foreigner like them. As they were talking my best friend told them that I was Nigerian and that we are probably closer in relation than herself. They looked me and said “ohh I have a Nigerian friend, cool dude”, then continue to speak to my best friend. She just rolled her eyes not to even mention she has a HUGE engagement ring on!! 😂💍
When she noticed how they wrote me off she stopped speaking to them and sent them on their way. I looked her like “what the fuck IS WRONG WITH THESE NIGGAS” (excuse my language but I was heated but not surprised). The valet walked up to us and shook his head and as he was laughing at the two idiot men who just entered their vehicles. He knew what was up we all did yet, they didn’t.
My best friend wore boots, jeans, and a dark green sweater to a damn 5 star restaurant. Her hair was in a pony tail and her nail were not done. I had on high heeled sandals, a form fitting navy blue dress, and a white and black houndstooth coat. My hair was straight, my nails/toes were done and nails painted red (white toes always).
In that moment I felt so low! This wasn’t a preference, this was a passive interaction with colorist men that left me feeling ugly and unwanted. Not only that but it made me feel as though my whole level up journey was a waste of fine! NEVER EVER allow people to make you feel like something you put your all into is a waste!! I will NEVER let anyone ever make me feel that way again! That is my vibe when surrounded by these type of men , Especially men who don’t own shit in this economy when I have a countries full of men who appreciate me! I should comfortable and appreciated by default not discarded even for small talked because my friend by my side is high hello or mixed!
I wrote all of this to say, black girls and women Go to where you are appreciated. Do not waste your time waiting for black men to notice you or treat you the way you should be treated. It is set in stone that they have their ideal types even when their type does not want them. They are of colonized minds and have no loyalty to you no matter how many times you fight, march, and stand in like superwoman for them . Let it go! Now in my disclaimer before I stated that I only have this issue with displaced African diaspora. I have NEVER had this problem with African men due to how our societal structures are built on our families. I understand I do I truly do. But I have options, I made options because those other options want ME! Even though I do plan to marry a Nigerian man because they typically provide, protect, and profess (when needed lol). Also, my lineage can continue. That’s ideal but like I said I’m open when dating.
Black women! Go to where you are appreciated and not tolerated! You are the prize! You are the gift to these men! You are not an option! You have a choice to make your life luxurious and live care free because you know the man in your life hold you to a high regard! You deserve it! You are not a charity case and don’t make people feel sorry for you! I got my confidence from my lineage and I know it’s not like that for everyone but dig deep and find that love for yourself! Stop wasting your youth struggling to find black love! There are other black men in this world that love you OUTSIDE of the American colonized mindset!

Summary: What did Chia do when the gang was away
Notes: I had this idea while listening to old timey music of Chia waiting for the gang to come back but accepting their faith. This is technically the first time she admits her feelings for Bruno.  In all honestly this is a brain dump. Aslo sorry for all the mistakes and blah I wrote this in one take ;;

"If you understand how dangerous this is going to be for my gang and I. I would appreciate it if you didn't come to Italy at all."
That had been the last thing he said to her over the phone before hanging up. At first she had been upset he would hang up on her without hearing her protest. But now she understood he didn't want to hear the pain he left in her heart. He hung up so that the last memories of her voice were happy ones. Just as she couldn't bear the white noise of the line ending, he couldn't handle the sound of silent tears falling down her face onto the phone. Chia knew she couldn't make promises out of the impossible so asking him to be safe was fruitless. Telling him to come back to her in one piece was teasing false hope of the faith chosen for him. 
Chia knew there was no point in trying to call him back. He would have already destroyed the phone and threw it away. If there were ways to do so, Bruno would completely ease himself from her memory if he meant sparing her for what was meant to come. In a way, he was grateful he couldn't. If he were to die, many would mourn him, but it would her, besides his gang, from the heavens he would watch over and send wind blowing kisses to. Every day when the wind blew past her face and a cold breeze touched her cheek, it would be him telling her he was free and finally home. But he wasn't dead yet and she wasn't mourning.
Chia knew it was best to stay away from Italy while issues started to rise from the underground. Word had made it all the way back to her father's empire that Passione was currently under fire. Like Pompeii, Passione's volcano had finally erupted and unknown to the innocent lives of Italy danger was shifting. But Chia didn't care and within two days of the phone call with Bruno she was on a plane to Naples from Cameroon. Naive to blind hopelessness when she stepped off the plane she made her way straight to Le Libeccio. She knew Bruno wouldn't be there waiting in the back with a glass in hand listening to the record player. Nor would be  Abbacchio sitting at the table with his headphones on blocking out a petty argument between Narancia and Fugo. Chia didn't even have hope that when she hung up her coat at the door and waved to the host that the latest member Mista would catch sight of her. Bruno had promised he would finally introduce her to Mista the next time she visited.
As she took her seat at the gang's table in the back, she made sure to sit in the extra chair. She knew from memory how the gang preferred to sit. Bruno always left of Abbacchio and right of Fugo. Narancia sat to Abbacchio’s right, which left an empty chair. Chia could guess that empty chair was now Mista's. But it didn't make sense why there was another chair. Chia knew it couldn't be true that Bruno always had an extra chair at the table just in case. Nor would it be true that an extra chair was there for her. But in the moment of wishful thinking Chia pretended he did do it for her. In the quiet back room of the restaurant, Chia saw the imprint of the gang enjoying another day with each other. Bruno would finally make it back to the table with information about the day. Abbacchio would only listen long enough to understand it was a free day. Narancia would cheer, but Fugo would remind him he was still behind on his homework, instantly killing Narancia's spirit. A figure in a weird hat would take the seat next to Chia, but before the figure could introduce himself, someone was calling for her attention.
"Ma'am?" The waiter said, a few steps further than usual. He had a look of worry on his face as he waited for Chia to respond.
"Uh?" Chia turned her head blinking a few times to bring herself back to reality.
"Are you ready to order?" The waiter asked gently, he could sense that air of sadness and worry coming off of the girl. He too was worried about Bruno and his gang, the whole town was when it became clear they were missing for a few days. 
"Y-Yes," Chia responded.

Every day since her arrival, Chia would walk from her hotel to the restaurant for lunch and dinner. The host would greet her promptly and walk her to her seat asking about her day. At first Chia thought it was odd but then it became clear that he only wished to soften the misery she was feeling.
"Your meal will be out soon, ma'am. Your worries will be over soon as well." Chia wanted to ask the man how he would know that. Why would he say it if he had no proof that Bruno was alive? When the questions in her mind became too loud she quickly reached for the wine glass to silence them. The taste was awful and she hated every second of it rolling down her throat. She wasn't sure how Bruno and Abbacchio would ever sit and drink this so casually. When the food came she thanked the host and tried to enjoy it but the joy of Italian food didn't fill her. 
"Chia?" The voice that called to her wasn't foreign but it wasn't the voice she wanted to hear. Slowly Chia turned around and saw Fugo standing in the arch that separated the main sitting area from the back. She stood from her seat ready to greet Fugo, but her legs grew heavy, and she fell back into her seat. Fugo hurried to her side to catch her, once Chia was in her seat correctly he could see the tears bubbling in the corners of her eyes. 
"You left them?" Chia said not above a whisper.
Fugo's breath hitched and he became hesitant to answer.
"I had to." Fugo's guilt started to crawl up his back as Chia looked him in the eyes. He didn't see anger, just like Bruno, there was no disappointment. Fugo wanted to explain himself. To ensure her that he was just as loyal to Bruno as he had been before everything. But the worlds were stuck. His mind was racing trying to find the words to tell her it hurt him so much to walk away. "I couldn't-"
Chia saw the tears forming in his eyes and she pulled him in for a hug, "I know Fugo, I understand." She held him like a mother happy to have her child back. They shared the space to cry together. Fugo felt heavy in her arms and she knew she felt the same to him. Chia was happy to see Fugo, he was her last ounce of hope.

"I have to go." Fugo stood at the arch of the back room with his head hanging.
"I know," Chia said, sipping her tea heartbroken by his news.
" If I could I-"
"Fugo." Chia sat her cup down and shook her head to dismiss him. Fugo felt shame but he had to do as he was ordered. Chia meant nothing to him personally, which made it easy for him to walk away from her. But he knew that to someone else she was a part of a bigger world and he had to show his respect. If he was being repositioned, that meant Bruno and his friends were still alive. 
"I'm sorry."
"I know."
"I'll come by when I can." With that, Fugo walked away with nothing more than another hole in his heart. He didn't have to see Chia's red eyes and running makeup. He didn't have to hear her cry or allow her tears to rip him apart. Chia was safe where she was, and so was he, his survival meant more than the tears of someone's lover.

"Fugo, why is Rome on fire?" Chia rose her drink to her lips as she watched the news. He wasn't meant to actually know the answer. He was r meant to give her hope that it had something to do with Bruno.
"I don't know." He responded, refusing to look at the tv. Chia continued to watch the tv as the news anchor tried to put together what was going on in the background. Right as the news anchor stepped out of the way of the camera Chia was sure she saw someone in a white suit stumbling across the intersection. Her eyes widen and she shakenly sat her cup down on the table. Unknow to her Fugo had seen it too and held his breath.
"Fugo-"
"I don't know."

It was Sunday morning, Fugo was gone again and told her he wouldn't be back anytime soon. He had expected her to say farewell or something in those sorts. However, Chia did no such thing and told him to come when he could as if she would be staying in Italy. She wouldn't for today was her last day before packing up and going back to the states. That morning was peaceful and the air outside seemed to have life in it after the events of two days before. The people of Italy seemed to magically breathe life into her. In her days of staying in Italy she had gone through the seven stages of mourning. She had accepted that if the gang were to come back, Bruno wouldn't be among them. She had accepted that her love confession would be to a headstone when they lower him six feet under. She had already imagined that it would be Abbacchio that hears her and turns the others away as she said her final goodbyes. Or maybe none of them would come back and it would be just her and Fugo. Fugo may have had his own life outside of hers, but in silence, they shared their grief. He wouldn't walk away from her even if he genuinely wanted to. 
Chia could feel the rays of the sun shining on the back of her neck against her emerald. She ran a hand over the gem and sighed. She had to get going to start packing for the long trip back home. She finished what was left of her breakfast and stood to put on her coat. She paid her tab and waved goodbye to the host and waiter. As she made it to the door she pulled on the handle right as someone pushed. She stumbled back a bit and the person on the other side caught.
"My apologies ma'am." The stranger helped her to her feet. Chia looked up to the man holding her and blushed in embarrassment. 
"No I'm sorry, I didn't see you on the other side." Chia smiled nervously and tried to sidestep the man with a nod. But when she made it around him she right into another person. She pulled away quickly and covered her face.
"I'm so sorry!" She said.
"No no it's my fault! I should have seen you. A pretty like you is hard to miss." The new stranger winked at her and Chia nearly tripped over her feet to getaway.
"Giorno move your ass out the way, my chest hurts and you standing there makes it hurt more." Chia snapped her head around when she heard Abbacchio's rough and grumpy voice. He was wincing a bit as he pushed past the two strangers in the door. Chia wanted to reach out and stop him but she didn't get the chance when she was quickly yanked from here she stood into a tight embrace.
"Chia!" Narancia yelled and pulled her off her feet and spun her around. Chia was too shocked to react so she stayed still. "You must have heard what was going on, it was crazy, first we got a new guy, that him Giorno, then Bruno become a capo, then we had to protect Trish, you'll like Trish, she's a bit mean but she's nice!" Chia couldn't even hang on to any of his words as Narancia tried his best to recall everything. While he was in the middle of something or the other about Abbacchio getting hurt Chia pulled him into a hug. She buried her face in his shoulder and he patted her back.
"You're safe Nara, you've made it." Chia could feel the tears starting to fall before she could try and hold them back.
"I'm always safe. I told you I would stay safe." Narancia gave her a hug back then pulled away when he saw Mista coming up the side of him.
"Oi! Narancia this is your girl?" Mista looked Chia up and down spectacle. Narancia nearly choked on air as he threw his hands up to protest.
"No!"
"Then who is she?" Mista smirked and narrowed his eyes at Narancia trying to get the truth of out him. He poked Narancia a few times trying to egg him on to spill the beans.
"Narancia, Mista, stop harassing people." Mista stopped his teasing when he heard his capo behind him. Narancia smiled and whispered a quick 'see ya' to Chia before pushing Mista into the restaurant against his will. When the boys moved out the way of Chia she felt her heart skip a beat. The last few days seemed like years and Chia was already accepting the faiths. She had cried too much already and prayed to nothing. She was sure that her wishes were left unheard and the days would continue on. 
But before her stood Bruno is his amazing mafia glory. Glowing with the sun as his halo. He was wrapped in bandages and nursing an arm in a slash under his jacket. He looked tired and in need of a proper rest but underneath it all he was relieved to still be alive. When Bruno saw Chia he felt the world stop, much different than before. His heart started to race a mile a minute but he had to keep his calm and collected composure. On his good arm hung a young girl with soft pink hair. She looked towards Bruno then towards Chia before letting him go and nodding with a smile towards Chia.
"You hung up on me, Bucciarati." Chia was the first to speak up.
"I'm sorry," Bruno responded.
"You worried me, Bucciarati."
"I know."
"I thought for sure that would be the last time I heard your voice."
"It should have been," Bruno moves closer to Chia and hesitantly takes her hand. Chia looked him in the eyes to see if there was anything that followed those words. Bruno was never one to say what was entirely on his heart. You had to look in his eyes to see his hidden emotions. "But it wasn't." 
"I love you, Bruno."
"I know." Bruno leaned in and took Chia's lips into his and for the first time in a very long time Bruno allowed the world and worries around him to melt away. The heavens would have to wait or him once again. For now, he had to live on for one more person. 
Mista and Narancia smiled and giggled in the store windows as they watched what happened outside. Giorno wanted to ask what was happening, but when he saw Abbacchio come back and hit the boys upside the head, he knew better than to ask. When the others did move from the window he caught a glimpse of outside and smiled.

Mallick has personally delivered thousands of meals cooked and packed by his staff—among them, chickpea curry and tandoori chicken with roasted cottage cheese, sweet corn, peas and rice. Volunteers from neighborhood organizations then take them to children, retirees and the multitudes who’ve been laid off or sick during the pandemic. “We all need to help each other,” Mallick says. “That’s the best way to get through a crisis.”
American tourists are banned from the Bahamas as coronavirus cases spike (Washington Post) One of the few countries to welcome U.S. tourists has changed its mind, citing soaring infection numbers. The Bahamas will close its borders to most visitors from the United States starting Wednesday, Prime Minister Hubert Minnis said Sunday. While commercial flights from Canada, Britain and the European Union will still be allowed to land, all visitors must show proof that they tested negative for the coronavirus at an accredited lab in the past 10 days. Other international flights will be banned.

In France, face coverings will be required in all public enclosed spaces as of Monday. EU agrees on $2.1 trillion deal after marathon summit (AP) After four days and nights of wrangling, exhausted European Union leaders finally clinched a deal on an unprecedented 1.8 trillion-euro ($2.1 trillion) budget and coronavirus recovery fund early Tuesday, after one of their longest summits ever. The 27 leaders grudgingly committed to a costly, massive aid package for those hit hardest by COVID-19, which has already killed 135,000 people within the bloc alone. “Extraordinary events, and this is the pandemic that has reached us all, also require extraordinary new methods,” German Chancellor Angela Merkel said. To confront the biggest recession in its history, the EU will establish a 750 billion-euro coronavirus fund, partly based on common borrowing, to be sent as loans and grants to the hardest-hit countries. That is in addition to the agreement on the seven-year, 1 trillion-euro EU budget that leaders had been haggling over for months even before the pandemic. “The consequences will be historic,” French President Emmanuel Macron said. “We have created a possibility of taking up loans together, of setting up a recovery fund in the spirit of solidarity,” a sense of sharing debt that would have been unthinkable not so long ago.
Breached levees trap thousands as flooding in China worsens (AP) Breached levees have trapped more than 10,000 people in an eastern Chinese town as flooding worsens across much of the country, local authorities said Tuesday. High waters overcame flood defenses protecting Guzhen, a town in Anhui province, on Sunday, the provincial government said on its official microblog. Flood waters rose as high as 3 meters (10 feet), the official Xinhua News Agency quoted Wang Qingjun, Guzhen’s Communist Party secretary, as saying. About 1,500 firefighters were rushed to carry out rescues in the province, where weeks of heavy rains have disrupted the lives of more than 3 million people, Xinhua said.
Britain suspends extradition treaty with Hong Kong (NYT) Britain on Monday suspended its extradition treaty with Hong Kong amid worries about a new national security law that Beijing imposed on the former British colony. The suspension comes as London and Beijing find themselves at increasing odds over a variety of issues, including Britain’s move to bar Chinese tech giant Huawei from its 5G wireless networks and growing public anger in Britain over the treatment of the Uighur minority in Xinjiang, an autonomous territory in China.
Japan helps 87 companies to ‘exit China’ after pandemic exposed overreliance (Washington Post) Japan is paying 87 companies to shift production back home or into Southeast Asia after the novel coronavirus pandemic disrupted supply chains and exposed an overreliance on Chinese manufacturing. Alarm bells started ringing in Japanese boardrooms as soon as the virus emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan, a major hub of the auto parts industry. Japanese automaker Nissan was forced to temporarily halt production at a plant in Japan in February over shortages of parts from China, while a Japanese consumer goods company, Iris Ohyama, found itself unable to meet surging local demand for masks after supplies to its factory in China were disrupted and export controls out of China were tightened. In March, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said the government wanted to bring production back home and diversify into Southeast Asia. Jordan to reopen airports to tourists in August (AP) The Jordanian government says it will begin reopening airports to international travelers in August after sealing its borders in March to help halt the spread of the coronavirus. Travelers from a list of approved, low-risk countries must pass a coronavirus test at least 72 hours before departure and will get a second test upon arrival in Jordan, Transportation Minister Khaled Saif says. Uganda’s Museveni seeks re-election to extend rule to four decades (Reuters) Uganda’s long-serving President Yoweri Museveni has collected papers to seek nomination as the ruling party’s candidate in next year’s presidential election, the party said on Tuesday. Securing a new term would potentially extend the 75-year-old former rebel fighter’s rule to four decades. Though no date has yet been fixed for the 2021 vote, it is typically held in February. The strongest opposition presidential aspirant is pop star and lawmaker Bobi Wine, 38, whose music endears him to the young. In power since 1986, Museveni’s tenure is only surpassed in Africa by Equatorial Guinea’s Teodoro Obiang, who has ruled since 1979 and Cameroon’s Paul Biya, who has ruled since 1982.
