[📝ENG Translation]: Souvenir Pop Through the Eyes of Joker Out Members
Original article written by Boštjan Tušek, published 27.11.2024 on 24ur. Photos by Miro Majcen. English translation by @kurooscoffee, review by drumbeat, proofread IG GBoleyn123.
Full translation under the cut 👇
We visited Joker Out in their rehearsal space, where the band members shared their thoughts on their new album and explained all the songs from their third full-length album, Souvenir Pop, in their own words. The album has already been released on digital platforms and CDs, and they are promising a vinyl edition as well.
About the Title SOUVENIR POP:
Bojan: We were sitting here in the rehearsal space, struggling to find a short, universally understandable way to summarise everything that happened to us during this time. After some serious thought, we realised that the music is essentially a collection of memories—“souvenirs”—that we’ve gathered. For the first time in our lives, we traveled so much and spent so much time away from home. Everything was very “pop,” and we lived out all the pop star dreams we used to admire. We shortened this journey into “pop,” making it a souvenir pop journey.
Photo: Joker Out recently unveiled their third album, Souvenir Pop. Together with Bojan, Kris, Jan, Nace, and Jure, we analysed all the songs on the album. PHOTO: Miro Majcen.
On the Cover Photo Taken in Bed:
Jure: The cover photo was born long before the album got its title. It was captured on the morning of the semifinals last May in Liverpool. We kept it under wraps for almost a year and a half. We liked it already back then and immediately thought it could one day work as an album cover. When we started looking for a cover, it still best reflected our feelings.
Bojan: It was taken on an iPhone during the filming of a promotional video, so basically a completely randomly captured moment.
On the “Circus” Surrounding Them Because of the New Album:
Kris: What's particularly noticeable is the mental and emotional fragmentation. The songs are quite diverse and colourful, and at first glance, they didn’t seem to belong on the same album. But as Bojan said, they remind us of fridge magnets, which perhaps reflects that we were “all over the place,” and that we were exploring ourselves on a broader musical, lyrical, and instrumental level than usual.
Nace: You can tell the songs are “hyped up” because we were in that mindset. Different things influence you, and it would have been quite different if we had stayed home for a month before that instead of being on tour.
PHOTO: Miro Majcen.
On Lack of Time:
Kris: We had to intentionally carve out time to write and record songs. We spent two months in London, a month in Hamburg, and last year we took a week in Kočevje to work on 'Everybody’s Waiting'. Carpe Diem took 14 days. We were maybe even under a bit of pressure, knowing we had to produce something.
On Three Languages on the Album:
Bojan: We spent a lot of time with all three languages; speaking, listening, and thinking in them. The stories naturally emerged in all three languages, and we didn’t resist that because it would have been truly foolish.
I see language as just another tool for conveying information, like how a specific guitar effect suits one song but not another.
PHOTO: Miro Majcen.
On Egos:
Bojan: Egos have to clash because they’re an important part of our drive. I wouldn’t say our egos fight; they occasionally disagree, but everything generally moves in the same direction—to create something the five of us like. We have a healthy dose of competitiveness, and we’ve never truly had a fight. We separate the person from the musician, which I think is important.
Kris: There was never much ego, but for this album, we threw out what little was left. On this record especially, we faced moments where someone else did something on your instrument that you should have done. But that opened new possibilities and ideas—a fresh perspective. This happened to all of us except Bojan with vocals.
Kris: Today, a friend sent me a message from Venice; they were playing 'Carpe Diem'. Last year, we made it onto the top 40 charts of a Lithuanian radio station. PHOTO: Miro Majcen.
Comments on the songs from the album SOUVENIR POP:
1. MUZIKA ZA DECU (Serbo-Croatian):
Bojan: When the idea came to me, I was thinking about how much I liked what was coming out of the speakers; quite grown up. Then I had a flash of cynicism and sarcasm: it’s all just for girls, for kids. Hence, “muzika za decu” (music for children). Initially, it was called Zlatna kosica (Golden hair), haha. I wrote the intro, then improvised the rest of the lyrics in Hamburg while we were playing it.
Nace: You might have changed two words.
Kris: The intro I play on guitar was originally done by Bojan on the piano. While recording, I was strumming along, imagining a piano intro. But when we listened to it later, everything felt so wrong that we started liking it. That’s how it stayed. We recorded it all together in one room, in one go.
Bojan: Žare was thrilled that he had to “clean up” the vocals (laughs), which we recorded in the kitchen.
Jure: This is one of the songs which features guest performers; a children’s choir at the end.
Nace: The kids from our crew and their relatives sang. The first group sang too in tune, so we recorded another group that was a bit less perfect. In the end, we combined the two recordings, and it turned out just right. There were about 15 to 20 kids altogether.
Jan: The guitar sound came from my Whammy pedal, which the producer Žare Pak didn’t always like, haha.
Nace: We have to commend Žare for producing in such a way that everything unnecessary is stripped away. He never hides anything like some other producers might.
PHOTO: Miro Majcen.
2. ŠTA BIH JA (Serbo-Croatian):
Kris: This was the first song we created in London. Within a week, we already had the structure, though it initially resembled Bijelo Dugme. Some elements were later removed.
Nace: Yeah, Žare came in and said, “Guys, this is unnecessary” (laughs).
Kris: His reaction was hilarious. When he heard it, he said, “Did I send you to the UK to make yugo music?!” (laughs). It was our first Balkan reaction to being foreigners in a foreign country, and it just poured out of us. Bojan already had the lyrics “šta bih ja u ovoj crnoj noći bez tebe radio” (what would I do in this dark night without you), and we recorded it.
Bojan: I actually prefer hearing my voice in Serbo-Croatian over Slovenian, the position of the voice seems more natural.
Jure: It's interesting how the colour of Bojan's voice changes with different languages, which is actually quite normal.
Kris: Yeah, Bojan, in a 'Balkan language,' your rocker alter ego comes out even more, I think.
PHOTO: Miro Majcen.
3. CARPE DIEM (Slovenian):
Bojan: This is the original souvenir. And pop. It’s hard to believe how one song can change everything for you like that. It’s literally just one of our songs; not necessarily better than the others, maybe not even one of my favourites. But as our Eurovision entry, it perfectly conveyed our message. The whole story and image of the band are captured in those three minutes. It’s an excellent channel for our energy, which got people to believe in us and become interested.
Kris: Today, a friend sent me a message from Venice; they played 'Carpe Diem' there. Last year, we were on the Lithuanian radio top 40 charts.
Bojan: The most bizarre thing I’ve ever seen in my life was when an older Mongolian singer and his band played and sang Carpe Diem live at a reception for our president, Nataša Pirc Musar, in Ulaanbaatar. We also received a recording from Zanzibar, where someone played it on a hotel terrace.
Bojan: I wouldn’t say our egos fight; they occasionally disagree, but everything generally moves in the same direction—to create something we all like. PHOTO: Miro Majcen.
4. STEPHANIE (English):
Bojan: Of course, Stephanie isn’t really Stephanie, but these are real people who exist.
Jure: I didn’t have any part in this one since there are no drums; everything is programmed (laughs).
Nace: Yeah, everything was done by Casio, haha.
Kris: For many songs, we had a sample beat to practice with, and in some cases, it stayed in the final version. 'Stephanie' is one of those songs as well.
5. AKO TOGA VIŠE NEČE BITI (Serbo-Croatian):
Bojan: You believe in Santa Claus until you realise he doesn’t exist. It’s the same with love; until something destroys everything so thoroughly that you simply stop believing in it. This is a song about very raw disappointment with love.
Nace: I’m in a long-term relationship, and when you leave home, it’s a sacrifice both partners make. In the spirit of it being good for both of you and your partner supports it, everything is okay.
Kris: Full respect to your partner for enduring how you went from ‘zero to a hundred’ in six months.
Nace: We have to commend Žare for producing in such a way that everything unnecessary is stripped away. PHOTO: Miro Majcen
6. BLUZA (Serbo-Croatian):
Bojan: I wrote 'Bluza' a long time ago, up to the chorus, about three years ago. For a long time, nothing happened with it until I presented it to the guys on an acoustic guitar. From there, it developed quickly, in a day or two. We even played it on tour before its release. Initially, it was more guitar-driven than it is now. The title, 'Bluza', literally just comes from the lyric “u ritmu tvoga bluza” (in the rhythm of your blues), but I quite like it.
Jan: A lot of our songs are titled after a phrase from the first verse that has no connection to the chorus.
Bojan: Similarly, back in university, my friends kept nagging me about 'Gola' (Naked), why we gave it that title, but nobody thought of the phrase “za naju” (for us), haha.
Kris: It’s probably because, during the creative process, we repeat the first part a lot, and that phrase naturally becomes the title.
Bojan: The story of a song always takes shape in the first verse.
PHOTO: Miro Majcen
7. LIPS (English):
Bojan: We heard there’s a lot of money in music for films, so the song sounds like an apocalyptic ballad (laughs). Initially, it was quite Franz Ferdinand-esque. We even considered a duet with a French singer but didn’t have a clear vision, so we dropped the idea. Later, Žare and I restructured it, and then Nace tied everything together into a cohesive piece.
Jure: The song went through quite a few iterations.
Nace: Originally, it was a completely different song called 'Je t'aime'.
PHOTO: Miro Majcen
8. MESTO DUHOV (Slovenian):
Bojan: Trumpeter Luka Ipavec collaborated on this track, adding trumpet parts to the choruses. We created it in England and named it after the street we were living on; it had quite a dark vibe. Initially, the song was about a girl who cheated on me, leading to my suicide. Then we introduced the “papapapa” part, creating an atmosphere of a funeral, a procession. When we decided the song should be in Slovenian, we tied it to how the current social climate feels incredibly negative overall. People are always ready to quickly react to something negative. It’s no longer pleasant to go outside; everything reflects the weight of what’s happening around us. There’s unfortunately an air of superficiality around us.
Jan: The solo came to life in Hamburg. Later, when we were finishing the songs, I had the idea to rhythmically slice the solo so that it spells out “baby boo” in Morse code.
Jan: A lot of our songs are titled after a phrase from the first verse that has no connection to the chorus. PHOTO: Miro Majcen
9. SONCE (Slovenian):
Jan: I play the keyboards on this one. Bojan had already outlined the song on guitar with chords. The idea was to create something orchestral, like in 'Novi val'. I, however, approached it differently and arranged the piano part. I showed Bojan a melody that, in my view, reflects the essence of the song.
Bojan: This song is a direct reaction to events in Palestine. It’s the story of a deceased son speaking to his mother. It’s undoubtedly the most emotionally heavy song on the album. The structure is also unconventional; no part repeats, and the chorus appears only once. Jan captured perfectly what the vocals are saying with his piano part. It’s like a haiku, a single thought; not a classic pop song. Jan nailed the final take on his first try.
Kris: We could quickly get stuck creatively if everyone only insisted on their own instruments. Many songs only broke through when someone pressed something different. There were many moments where we needed that kind of freshness.
PHOTO: Miro Majcen
10. EVERYBODY’S WAITING (English):
Kris: This was a song we didn’t know what to do with until Žare offered the most basic beat, and Jan started working with the Rhodes electric piano, which set the direction for the album.
Bojan: Jan picked up the Rhodes out of nowhere and according to Žare, he plays better than 90 percent of Slovenian keyboardists (laughs).
Kris: Žare’s modus operandi is to break your conventional thinking and enhance your intuition. He believes intuition is superior to thinking.

(if ur still taking requests) smth abt jude surprising a very stressed out student for their bday! i'm projecting horribly here 😍😍
author: happy (belated (?)) birthday!!!
—
you feel your phones vibration against your desk, gently tickling your skin. it pulls you out of a trance you didn’t even know you were in, your eyes now focused on the device.
a tired smile stretches on your lips, the contact name making you chuckle.
[from; The bestest best boyfriend]: open the door !
sighing, you get up from your chair and move to open the door of your small apartment, the sound of your steps as the only sound inside.
you open the door, immediately being met by a huge bouquet of blood red roses and red balloons, judes happy face the center of your sight. stepping to the side to let him enter, you take the flowers from his hands and move them to your face, the gentle scent of roses meeting your nose.
“hey, baby.” jude leans down to press a kiss on your lips, pelvis moving closer to press against yours.
you greet him back, though you see his eyebrows draw together, forehead creasing.
“you okay, love?” jude pushes your body towards your living room slash working space, placing the sweets tied to the ballon onto the table, taking the flowers from your head to put them on your desk.
you sigh for the nth time today, leaning against his body, slightly relaxing as you feel his warm hands caress your back.
jude speaks up again, voice laced with confusion, “babe?”
“‘m so tired, i don’t even know what to do.” you explain your behavior, though it doesn’t even come near to what you actually feel.
on top of being stressed and tired, you start to feel even worse because you can’t be happy to see your boyfriend. he doesn’t deserve to be greeted by your gloomy self like that, but you also know that he would never be mad at you for your feelings, immediately trying to help wherever he can.
“why aren’t you ready?” he asks, siting down on your couch and pulling you along by your wrist, positioning you on his lap.
“for what?”
you feel his hand move up and down your thigh as you lean against his body, head resting on the crook of his neck as you take in his manly scent, his aftershave tingling your brain in a way that you wouldn’t dare to put into words.
jude gasps, pushing your head up to hold it between his hands, thumbs drawing circles against your cheeks.
“your birthday dinner? you wanted to eat at that restaurant when we visited liverpool?” his words making bells ring in your head.
you loudly gasp as you stand up, “jude, babe, i,” your heart sinks as your eyes skim over his face, “i forgot?”
he tucks you down again, your legs caging his as you come face to face. “did you forget your own birthday?”
though jude smiles at you, thinking that this situation is quite funny, a moment the two of you would remember in your graying days, you can’t help but feel sad, closing your eyes as you put your forehead against his shoulder.
“exams are stupid.” you mumble, finally understanding why so many people have been calling you throughout the day.
you two sit on your couch for a while, small talk being exchanged between you. that is, until jude decides to get up to get your present that he left by the door, your heart’s rate picking up as you watch him sit next to you, a big bag placed on your lap.
“you didn’t have to-“
he puts his finger against your lips, successfully stopping you. “just, i hope you like it.”
you smile at him, thankful to have him in your life before you look down to pull out a rectangle box from the bag. your eyes widen as you are greeted by a white box, the familiar apple logo making tears sting your eyes.
your voice is soft, looking at your boyfriend who shyly looks at you through his lashes, “jude, i, oh my god, thank you so much.”
you move towards him to hug him tight, gratitude expressed through soft kisses spread over his neck.
“you said that your laptop was slow, and how many breakdowns you had because of it, so i thought, well, yeah.” he explains, his hand resting on your cheek once again, warmth radiating from his eyes.
your heart beats against your rips, heat creeping up your neck.
you knew that is an incredible person, someone who cares about his loved ones, giving as much as he can without expecting anything in return. you knew that he pays attention to everything you say, almost hanging on every word spilling from your lips, never making you say anything twice, but right now, fuck.
right now you feel loved in a way you never knew that existed, you feel so warm, so safe and comfortable that you wish to bathe yourself in this feeling for eternity, never once thinking of leaving this feeling. all the negative energy, all the thoughts of failure and the pain of final season wash away as you continue to look at your boyfriend, him returning your gaze of adoration twice as much.
“i love you.” you whisper, afraid of losing the moment.
jude leans forward to kiss your forehead, engulfing you with his scent.
“i love you even more.”
LETS FUCKING GOOOOIOOOOOOOO
(exams make me question my existence.)

Our Little Secret (Part 61)
Pairing: Cillian Murphy x Reader
Warning: Infidelity, Age-Gap, Triggers, Smut
After the initial shock of the night, Mara had recovered quickly and, about ten days after the incident, you found yourself packing some bags to take Mara onto her first trip since you separated from Cillian.
You were going to visit him after all, in Liverpool, for an entire week while he was filming so that he could spend some time with Mara.
The idea was for you to stay in a separate unit with Mara, inside the apartment/hotel building rented out for the cast and crew and seeing that Cillian was an executive producer on the movie, he did not need approval for this.
"Nappies, check," you murmured under your breath as you walked through your house, making sure you had everything you needed for the trip. "Wipes, check," you muttered again, ticking off the items in your head.
"Toys, change of clothes... I think that's everything," you said to no one in particular before making your way back to Mara who was playing quietly on the floor while your best friend Emma roamed through your closet.
"How about this? Or that? Or maybe both?" Emma suggested, holding up a silky black blouse and a pair of distressed jeans.
You couldn't help but laugh at her enthusiasm. "Em, I am not going out to party while I am away. I am going there so that Mara can see her dad and spend some time with him," you said, shaking your head as you turned to face her.
Emma held up her hands in surrender, a sheepish look on her face. "Okay, okay. I got it. No partying. Just quality time with your baby daddy and Mara. Got it," she said, smiling brightly before pulling out some lingerie.
"How about this then?" Emma suggested, holding up a lacy bra and panty set. "I mean, it's still part of quality time with your baby daddy, right?" she winked at you playfully.
"Oh god, no! I am not going down that route again, Em! Cill and I are in a good place right now I think, and I am not planning on rocking the boat just because I want to get laid," you said , turning your nose up at the lingerie.
Emma raised her eyebrows at you, completely taken aback by your response. "Alright then, okay. No funny business while you're away," she said, trying not to laugh while you quickly disappeared into the bathroom to pack your toiletries and escape the conversation.
Just as you were in the bathroom however, Emma grabbed the lingerie and shuffed it into the suitcase, right beneath one of your favorite jumpers, just in case you changed your mind. "Okay, I think that's everything now. Thanks for helping me Emma," you called out, emerging from the bathroom and taking one more look through the room. Mara was still quietly playing on the floor, seemingly unbothered by the chaos around her.
"It's no problem, happy to help. Plus, it's not like I have anything else to do today. I am sick of my folks after moving back in with them. They have been a nightmare to deal with," Emma continued. Her words echoed off the walls of the bedroom, a testament to the pent-up frustration simmering beneath her surface.
"Are they still fighting?" you asked with some concern, seeing how her parents have had a troubled relationship with each other.
" I wish I could say no, but unfortunately, yes. The same old arguments about my dad not being present enough for them or about his drinking sometimes. It's like a broken record. I really wish something would change," Emma admitted, her voice tinged with sadness and frustration.
"I know this might not be of much help long term, but you could stay here if you like, especially while I am away, and even after I come back, if you don't mind some sleepless nights of course," you offered, hoping that this might alleviate some of the stress that Emma was dealing with.
Emma's eyes lit up at the offer, but then they clouded with guilt. "I can't impose on you like that, Y/N. You have Mara to take care of now and having me stay here would only make things more complicated. I don't want to intrude," she said, biting her bottom lip nervously.
"You wouldn't be intruding at all," you assured her, putting a comforting hand on her shoulder.
"I insist. It would be great to have some company, and you wouldn't have to deal with your parents' arguments all the time. Plus, I know how much you love Mara and me of course," you winked and Emma hesitated, looking conflicted for a moment before ultimately giving in to the idea. "Alright, I'll take you up on the offer," she said, finally relenting. "But I'll contribute in any way I can.
I'll help with the groceries, or cook dinner, or even babysit Mara so you can go out and have some time for yourself," Emma offered, a sincere expression on her face and, with that, you found yourself a temporary roommate.
***
The following day, your new roommate even drove you and Mara to the airport
, This was the first time you were flying alone with Mara, even if it was only for a short trip. As the plane took off and you felt the familiar sensation of weightlessness, Mara gripped your hand tightly, a nervous grin on her face. You couldn't help but smile back, feeling a wave of protectiveness and love wash over you.
Cillian was waiting for you at the arrivals gate, a huge grin on his face when you emerged, bundled up against the cold Liverpool air. He had managed to take half the day off, rescheduling some of his scenes to another day, which was something that wasn't easy to do.
"Hey there, munchkin," he said, kneeling down to Mara's level and giving her a gentle hug. Mara giggled and wriggled, calling out 'dada', in her stroller, clearly thrilled to see her dad.
"Hey," you responded, feeling a little shy all of a sudden. You weren't sure why - you and Cillian had been on good terms now. But something about the way he was looking at you, with those intense blue eyes and that little crooked smile, made your heart skip a beat. Or maybe it was the haircut which, to you, looked fabulous on him.
"Hey you," he responded, his voice soft and gentle, before giving you a hug as well. "Thank you for coming. I really appreciate it," he smiled at you, his hand lingering on the small of your back as he guided you towards the carousel to pick up your luggage. The gesture was comforting and familiar, and you couldn't help but feel a sense of relief wash over you as you realized how much you had missed Cillian's presence in your life with all that chaos between you and him having been away filming.
As you navigated through the bustling airport, you couldn't help but notice how many people were staring at Cillian. It wasn't surprising, of course - he was incredibly attractive, with his Tommy haircut and chiseled jawline. Plus, he was rather famous obviously, which made you feel a little more self-conscious than usual.
"So, where to first? The hotel or the park with Mara?" Cillian asked as you made your way towards the baggage claim, Mara babbling happily in her stroller.
"Why don't we head to the hotel first and then go from there? That way Mara can take a little nap," you suggested, giving him a grateful smile.
Cillian nodded in agreement, "That sounds like a good idea, although I don't think the unit will be ready until 3 o'clock," he mentioned before grabbing two of the bags and leading the way out of the airport and towards the taxi stand.
"That's fine, she can have a snooze on your bed. We just need to watch her," you told him as you settled into the taxi, buckling Mara in beside you.
"I suppose that will work," he said before giving Mara a kiss on her forehead. In that moment, you felt a surge of profound emotion, a warm, fuzzy feeling of happiness and contentment mixed with a dash of anxiety and uncertainty. You didn't know how this reunion with Cillian would play out, but you hoped that you could put aside your differences and make the most of the time you had together, again, for Mara's sake.
After the taxi dropped you off at the hotel and apartment building, Cillian led the way to the reception desk, where he enquired about the unit for you and, much to his surprise, the receptionist had some bad news.
"Uhm, I am so sorry Mr Murphy, but I actually left a message for you an hour ago as it appears that we are overbooked due to the change in schedule on BBC's other studio show," she said apologetically.
"What do you mean you're overbooked? I booked this apartment last week and you confirmed the availability," Cillian replied, clearly annoyed at the news, but remaining polite.
"I understand, and I apologize, but it appears that we had an internal mix-up and double-booked the apartment," she explained.
Cillian sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose, looking like he wanted to be anywhere but there. "What are our options?"
"Well, we do have a few other apartments available at our other hotels, on Banks Street and Maitland Road, but it's about half an hour from here," the receptionist said, looking uncomfortable at the prospect of disappointing Cillian.
Cillian looked at you, annoyed but also resigned, but you immediately shook your head.
"No, that would mean less time for Mara with you. It's totally impractical," you told him, seeing how his filming schedule was going to be so busy and neither him nor Mara should be thrown out of their schedules in order to travel this distance every day.
"Can't you put an extra bed into his apartment? I am happy to sleep in the living room with Mara," you suggested to the receptionist, but Cillian shook his head.
"Well, let's check it out and see if we can come up with an idea, okay? It will be fine," you told Cillian, trying to reassure him with a soft smile and, sure enough, you came up with a solution after Cillian took you to his floor.
His apartment was small, but the couch was reasonably sized, so your idea was an obvious one.
"Well, Mara can sleep in a cot in the living room with me and I will sleep on the couch. Easy," you told Cillian, trying to make it sound like it wasn't a big deal.
Cillian's jaw clenched for a moment and his eyes narrowed, "You're not sleeping on the couch, Y/N. I can."
You shook your head, "No, you're filming until late every night, you need your sleep. Despite, I don't mind. I have nowhere else to be during the day so I can catch up on any sleep I might be missing out on, and it will be a great week for Mara, seeing you every day," you smiled at him, but he shook his head again.
"No, how about we put a cot on the bedroom, and you sleep in the bed instead. I will take the couch. I insist," Cillian said, leaving no room for argument.
You sighed, knowing that it was futile to argue with him. Cillian could be incredibly stubborn when he wanted to be, and this was one of those times. "Okay, fine. We'll put a cot in the bedroom then," you confirmed, and he quickly made the call to reception.

Miles Kane, What It's Like to Play as a 'One Man Band'
We met Miles Kane as a founding member of important bands such as the Last Shadow Puppets with Alex Turner of the Arctic Monkeys and the Rascals. In the last several years, the Liverpudlian has been on a solitary path, as the name of his recent release suggests. We spoke with him shortly before his long-awaited return to Athens, at "Arch Club", on Friday 5/17.
How has your tour been going so far?
The concerts so far are incredible. I'm excited to play by myself, so I'm very happy. I think people are relating and connecting with the songs on my new record and it's taking me to places I haven't seen in a long time. And Greece is one of those places.
Can you tell us a few words about how you wrote "One Man Band", your most chart-topping album to date?
The album was created in Liverpool. We worked on it with my cousin James Skelly, who used to be a member of The Coral. We went back home and that gave birth to the desire to make a completely straight album. Writing songs is what I do best, not thinking too much, just talking about my feelings, my worries and how I want to be better. I guess life in general is what "One Man Band" is all about, stomping on some rock'n'roll, surf music. We had a clear idea of what the album and its sound should be and we followed it to the end. This is also the reason why it is my favorite work of all that I have released so far. I feel very proud!
You started a great career by participating in various bands, such as Last Shadow Puppets. What motivated you to follow a more solitary path in recent years?
I've been doing solo stuff since I was 22 and I'm 38 now. I learned so much from the bands I was in, the Rascals and the Little Flames. Being on my own and free to work with whoever I want and do whatever I want – even if it sounds selfish – I think suits me best.
And what's the biggest lesson you've learned from playing as a "One Man Band"?
Not playing with a band is completely different for me. It's a huge challenge and not many could pull it off to be honest. It has made me improve my performance as a guitarist, as a singer and as a performer.
What is the most important experience from this journey?
It may sound cliche but I really had a lot of good times in my career. But I feel that who I am today as a person in life and on stage gives me new meaning and life. At all these smaller concerts where I meet new fans, I realize that the younger generation brings a whole different energy to it all. I feel that the phase I am in now is the happiest of my life. I feel more connected and hope to stay on this "path".
Are you excited to be back in Athens ("Arch Club", 5/17)?
Yes! I think I can't remember the last time I visited Greece because it's been so many years. I hope people come because I plan to give you the best night of your life.
What constitutes a successful live?
A great outfit, some "golden" dance moves and an audience! I need to feel like people want to be involved as much as I want to be. This is the only way we can go to the next level.
What are your plans for the future?
I'm trying to write something new and prepare a new album, but I'm having a hard time doing it right now. I don't want to stop the flow of things. I'm quite a simple person and I know what I like in life... Music. Maybe next year I'll be ready for a new release.
Is there another side project in the works?
We're not working on anything with Alex. [Turner], like Last Shadow Puppets. But I have this new little side project going on called The Evils and it's an instrumental surf idea. We'll see how this goes... [s.s. In the time between the interview and its publication, Kane along with Oscar Sholto Robertson and Dave Bardon released the E.P. "Miles Kane & The Evils".]
Miles Kane's albums in his own words
"Colour of the Trap" (2011)
"The beginning of the adventure, when I was still searching for who I am. This album opened the way for me. You can hear all the different sides of me in it."
"Don't Forget Who You Are" (2013)
"Probably one of the best songs I've ever written [inc. the title]. Something keeps me coming back to it. It's like coming home to the roots for me. Sometimes in life you can get sidetracked and forget who you are. This song defined me as an artist and as a person."
"Coup de Grace" (2018)
"An intense rock'n'roll, punk period! Coming out with such an aggressive album is not as easy as you think."
"Change the Show" (2022)
"My chance to show my love for Northern Soul and Motown...Growing up I listened to everything from Diana Ross and the Four Tops to whatever was on the radio."

A Promise Across Time | Bruce Wayne/Batman x Magician!Reader (Part 1/3)
Synopsis: Bruce remembers the first date he had with Vivian and the time he truly felt alive again.
Bruce messed up. While it wasn't entirely his fault, he felt guilty to have seen Vivian all dressed up that night and ready to meet him inside the restaurant only for him to apologize and take a raincheck on their date. Their first date. She tried to be understanding by giving a smile and reassuring him that “these things happen” but he could see that she was looking forward to their dinner. He was too.
After their brief partnership in taking down Deacon Blackfire, Bruce wanted to get to know the Symbologist and Witch-out-of-practice a little more. She was intriguing, insightful, and sincere. Vivian did tell him that she didn't like politics, hence her preference to work in academia to get away from corporate politics. Despite her work dealing with symbols and icons, and many layers of research in sociology, history, geology, and philosophy, she prefered that people talked without the double meaning. That they stay true to their word. To be kind to one another. To tell it to her face than have someone stab her in the back.
But it can't be helped. People are people. So she just went to a place that has that kind of decency. Or at least have a bit more decency than in a corporate office.
It took him a while to find time to reach out to her again. He did try to call her hotel after that night but it was her father who answered and dropped the phone on him. Bruce was a bit surprised. No one really drops the phone on Bruce Wayne. Batman, sure. But Bruce Wayne? It was rare.
With everything going on with his day job and night job, Bruce decided to just approach her again once he's finished the Firefly case with Batman and some meetings with the board in Wayne Enterprise as Bruce Wayne. For Vivian, he waited until her family had gone back to Liverpool. He had a feeling that her father would slam the door at his face if he came to their hotel.
So, here he was now, entering Gotham University years after graduating. Walking down its familiar halls, Bruce recalled his undergraduate years there before continuing his studies at Yale where he got his degree in law. He was mostly familiar with the campus grounds of the Criminology, Information Technology, and Engineering campuses as he took those understudies when he was twenty-one. He remembered running through these halls with Harvey Dent, both young and full of themselves.
There were still happy times, he thought as he remembered his best friend. But it was mostly overshadowed by the bad memories. The struggle he went through.
Bruce rarely entered the Classics Campus where the literature and history majors were. Sure he would visit the library there and go to some classes in that building, but he can't say he knew the layout like the palm of his hand. So, as he entered the large and classical looking building with its pillars and statues, he had to ask his way around. Specifically to where Professor Vivian Pryor was at his hour.
Maybe surprising her at her place of work wasn't such a good idea. He forgot, Vivian was a professor, she'll be moving around than staying in one place.
A couple of students he asked were in shock that he was there and stammered in giving directions,” Bruce – Mr. Wayne – Mr. Billionaire Bruce Wayne,” the student said when he approached them, “Professor Pryor's — uh — it's around 2PM now, and it's a Friday… I think she'll be at 304, the Symposium.”
“Symposium?” Bruce said.
“Right, sorry, just a campus joke – Elliot's Hall.”
“Thanks.”
He found classroom 304 easily as it was the first room he saw upon taking the final step at the stairs, and just in time the students were exiting the classroom. Some paused as they saw him and then moved along when Bruce greeted them and asked if Vivian Pryor was still inside. They said yes and he went.
The amphitheater-styled room was empty, save for the red-haired woman packing her things at the center stage. Her hair was styled to a bun this time, a bit out of place now since it was the afternoon, her clothes were similar to the one she wore in her first book launch – the tweed high-waisted pants, a white button-shirt, boots, and a coat which she was just about to wear until she saw him approaching her.
“Bruce Wayne,” she said, quite surprised to see him there.
“Professor Pryor,” Bruce smiled and held out the small bouquet he brought. “I hope you're not busy.”
Vivian thanked him for the flowers. “Why?”
“I was wondering if we can talk? We didn't really get the chance to since I canceled our date at the last minute.”
“It was an emergency. Things happen,” Vivian shrugged. “Don't tell me that's been bothering you all this time.”
“It has.”
Vivian hid her blush in the flowers. “That must have been awful for you. You could have called or dropped by if it bothered you so much. I wouldn't mind… but I understand you're busy so I just thought it'd be best not to bother you too much.”
“I did, actually called and dropped by the hotel you and your family were staying at… but your father wasn't too happy about it.”
“What?” Vivian raised a brow at him.
“He never told you, didn't he?”Oops.
“That son of a – sorry, grandma but your son is such a…” Vivian got her phone and typed furiously fast and hit sent. “He will not be doing that again. I am so sorry about that, Bruce. I hope this doesn't give you a bad impression on my family my dad is just –”
BING!
Vivian opened the chat – it was their family group chat – and typed a quick reply and turned the chat in silent mode, knowing it was going to be flooded with messages from her stepfather.
Turning to Bruce, who had an amused smile on his face, Vivian said, “Again, I am so sorry about that – just so we're clear, that wasn't me telling my dad to slam the door or drop the phone, he did it. If you called, I would have answered the phone.”
“It's fine. I’m glad you're not mad at me for that night.”
“Bruce, shit happens,” she sighed, he was surprised with her language, “While it was a little shitty that I got dressed up only to spend my night drinking beer in the nearest bar that night, you had an emergency. It happens, and I'm sure it will happen again along the road. You can't beat yourself over a date that didn't go as planned.”
“Well, I promise that this time it won't. Maybe we can have another try? This Friday, afterwork. I'll pick you up at your hotel.”
“And where will we go?”
Bruce sighed. “You know, I've been asking the same thing myself. I was thinking of the museum tour but then I'm sure you’ve memorized Gotham Museum by now.”
“I work there, Bruce. Part-time,” she grinned.
“So, I was thinking something different for the both of us. So we'd be at par with the experience.”
“And what do you think that would be?”
“There's a nice restaurant not far, it's new, and it's got music. Not too loud that we won't hear each other. And room to dance.”
“I didn't know Bruce Wayne could dance.”
“I don't. Do you?”
“Not particularly… alright, Friday. My last class is at four. You can pick me up at five – to give the lady a little time to prepare?”
“Your hotel then?”
“Here is fine. My students are making signs over your shoulder that they'd be the one to help me prepare,” Vivian waved at the group who entered the room and had a large message on their pad saying: Makeover. Room 203.
Bruce chuckled at the sight of the girls, and turned to Vivian to say, “Here there. Tomorrow at five.”
“Something fancy or casual?”
“A little bit of both if you like. I guess I should get going, your class is here.”
“Yes, go. Before they take this as a sign it's free period… and Mr. Wayne.”
“Yes?”
Vivian held the flowers. “I appreciate the flowers, but it breaks my heart to see them wither at the end of the day.”
“No flowers then. Chocolates?”
“A girl's best friend.”
“Coffee?”
“Now you're speaking my language.”
“I'll take note. See you tomorrow, Vivian.”
“You too.”
As Bruce climbed the steps, he passed by the giggling students and said out loud for Vivian to hear, teasingly, “I'll leave her in your hands. Make sure she's free tomorrow and ready.”
“You got it, Mr. Wayne,” one of them giggled.
As soon as Bruce closed the door behind him, he heard teasing and squeals from the students and Vivian telling them, “At least have the decency to wait for him to leave the freaking door before doing that. Jesus. Come on, I taught you better, didn't I?”
Bruce smiled as he heard the laughter in the room.
On the day of their date, Bruce made sure to finish all his work in Wayne Enterprise before 3 PM, and went to make sure Gotham wasn't on fire before making a quick change in the office bathroom, which caught the attention of Lucius Fox and asked, “Off to a date, Mr. Wayne?”
“I am,” he said as he tried to fix his tie. Today it just wasn't working with him.
Seeing his struggle, Lucius Fox chuckled and offered to fix it for him, and he let the man. “And who is this lovely lady you're getting all dressed up for today, Mr. Wayne? If it's alright to ask.”
Bruce smiled. “Professor Vivian Pryor.”
“Ah, the author. She's a lovely woman. Going dancing, I see?”
“What made you think so?”
“Your shoes.”
“Alfred picked them for me today. I told him that I was heading to the Black Bird tonight with Vivian.”
“Leave it to Alfred to give you a good suit and shoes for a night of dancing,” Lucius laughed and finished his work and pressed down Bruce's suit. “I think that would be enough to sweep her off her feet.”
Bruce laughed. “Thanks, Lucius.”
“Have fun, Mr. Wayne!”
Driving to Gotham University, Bruce waited for Vivian at the Classics Campus in his pressed suit, heavy coat, and a box of chocolates he thought he'd like. He was a bit early – ten minutes early – but he didn't wait too long because Vivian came out with some of her colleagues who kept gushing over her dress.
And they had more than one reason to.
As Vivian went down, Bruce paused as he took in the sight of her. Her red locks placed in a coiffer with a pearl accessory to keep it up, she wore a bit of makeup that stands out for the evening, and an emerald dress with a square neckline that gives enough skin for anyone to want more, the bodice hugged her body perfectly with a good emphasis on her chest while still being modest, and a skirt made off soft and flowing material that made it look like she was walking underwater.
“Bruce!” Vivian smiled as soon as she saw him and ran towards his direction to get away from her teasing colleagues “Don't you look handsome. Are those dance shoes? And you said you don't dance.”
“Alfred picked them out for the day,” Bruce shrugged. “I didn't even know I had them. You look stunning, Vivian.”
A blush crept up her cheeks and Vivian looked away to hide it but he saw. It was adorable.
“You said dancing, so I picked something that looks like it's for dancing… actually, it was my neighbor in the hotel that picked it. He's this fashion designer in Gotham for an event and he gave me this for the night.”
“Well, I guess we're definitely dancing tonight. Also,” Bruce held the chocolates out. “Chocolates as promised, but Alfred said it's important to give a lady flowers on a date, so,” he opened the box and showed the flower-shaped chocolates.
Vivian chuckled and said, “smart. You found a loophole with my no-flowers rule.”
“Shall we?” He offered his arm to her.
“Yes, we shall,” Vivian turned to her friends and called for her colleagues and students, who stayed longer to see her be picked up by her – in their words – “knight in shining armor”, to get her things that they kept hostage so she could show off her dress. “This doesn't exempt you from tomorrow's test. Got it?” Vivian told the students as she joined Bruce.
“Boo!” Her students teased.
“Don't worry, I'll try to get her forget about the test tomorrow,” Bruce joked.
“You do that, Mr. Wayne. You'll be saving our asses from another essay!”
“Thanks for taking care of her for me!”
“Have fun, Vivian!” Her colleagues called out.
Heading to the parking lot, Vivian was in shock to find the expensive looking car parked between two economy-sedans, one of which was owned by her colleague, Justin Kirk, who was about to leave for home and only waved at her goodnight without his usual smile. As she entered the car, Vivian took a breath.
“A manual,” Vivian commended him.
“If you're going to drive a really fast car, you should drive it right,” he smirked.
She smirked. “If you're going to drive a really fast car, you shouldn't drive it in Gotham, Mr. Wayne. Else you'll find yourself getting troubles. This beast is made for speed not everyday traffic.”
“Good thing we'll be driving on a road that lets me drive fast then,” Bruce left the parking space.
“I thought we were going dancing in Black Bird?” Vivian asked.
“We are. Just not in Gotham City. The Black Bird at the outskirts has a good view.”
Long Island. He was taking her to Long Island.
“I can't believe you're actually taking me outside of Gotham City for our first date,” Vivian chuckled.
“I gotta make it up to you for cancelling. Besides, you'll see why the original Black Bird is way better than the branch in Gotham. I love Gotham but I think you'll like this place more than the one in Founder's Island.”
“And I thought we're both trying something new tonight.”
“We are. I don't usually dance. But with you, I'll give it a shot.”
The drive to Long Island was quick and fast. Bruce made sure to show her that the car wasn't just for show, that he can really drive it, and the entire time he would see at the corner of his eye the smile on her face. She also liked when he drifted the car. Not a flinch, just her smile reaching her ears. He could only imagine the look on her face if she rode the Batmobile during a chase. She'd love that he bet.
Minus the guns being fired at them or the RPG, which he encountered last week with Penguin's men trying to shake Batman off their tail.
The Black Bird at Long Island was at the outskirts, atop a cliff that connects down to the white beach. From where they sat at the covered balcony, Vivian could still see the lights coming from Gotham City, and a bit of smog that covered its skies.
“You're right, this does have a better view,” she told Bruce. “And has good music too.”
“Glad you like it.”
Their food came not long after they finished their wine. It was good food, probably the best she tasted from a restaurant. She shouldn't be surprised since the Black Bird had a michelin star. She ordered an Alfredo, and for a moment she remembered her time eating at one of the restaurants in Rome when she had her semester there.
They talked about a lot of things as they ate. About their work, and then their studies, which they were invested in learning about from one another. She was surprised when he mentioned he had degrees in Criminal Science, Forensic Sciences, Computer Sciences, Chemistry and Engineering by the time he was twenty-one. But she remembered his little secret, and her little secret, and thought that it made sense for Batman to have those under his belt. Still, considering he still didn't know that she knew he was Batman, the fact he had five degrees under his belt by twenty-one, along with a degree in law from Yale was impressive.
At twenty-one she was still in uni, going though classes, writing papers, doing her reading for tomorrow's lecture during her part-time jobs. Once, during a slow night, she gave a lecture on Dante's Divine Comedy to a homeless man who asked for a cup of coffee. It was the most philosophical conversation she had since then. She wondered where the old man was now.
When their desserts came, Vivian ordered an Affogato, the band started to play more upbeat music, encouraging people to come up and dance. From their place, Vivian and Bruce watched as some of the guests got up and danced to the upbeat, dance music from the sixties.
“So, are we going to just sit here and watch them or are you going to use those dance shoes that your butler prepared for tonight?” Vivian said.
Bruce got up from his seat and held out his hand to her. “Don't hit me if I step on your foot.”
“Don't worry, Mr. Wayne, we'll take things slow,” Vivian took his hand and led him to where the others were.
When Bruce was about to put his hand on her waist to do some ballroom dance he's done in galas, Vivian removed his hand and told him, “This is jazz and blues, Bruce.”
“I told you, I'm not much of a dancer.”
“Just follow my lead,” Vivian grinned and circled him with his hand still holding hers, when she pulled out, Bruce instinctively pulled her back in and kept the rhythm.
“And you said you don't dance,” he whispered to her ear.
“I might have gone to clubs like this back in Liverpool and learned a thing or two,” she got out of his chest and led them through the dance. Her dress danced the entire time, giving an illusion of the music flowing through them in each twirl and step. Bruce held her hand the entire time and his smile never faltered, and to surprise her he even dipped her back a little and pulled down her hair to add more flare to her get up as she danced.
By the end of the second song, the two left the Black Bird, with Bruce paying for their dinner, but instead of head home, they went down to the white beach. Wearing her coat and holding her shoes, Vivian relished the feeling of sand burying her feet as they walked and the smell of the ocean.
“You lied,” said Bruce.
“About that?”
“About dancing. We weren't par in this date.”
“I really don't dance, you know.”
“Those moves says differently.”
“I'm telling you, that was just me fooling around,” Vivian laughed. “You weren't bad yourself. I'm sure if you brought me to those fancy places that has ballroom dances I'd be the one following your lead.”
“Naturally, I was raised by a butler,” it was supposed to be a joke but Vivian looked at him with a sad gaze, but she smiled nonetheless.
“Alfred raised a gentleman,” Vivian squeezed his hand. “He raised a good man.”
“He was always generous and said it was my parents who raised me. They did for a time until they were no longer there. He was the one who taught me all of this – how to talk, how to act, how to dress up, manners, how to dance, and how to woo a woman.”
“Well, he did a good job.”
“What about you? Who taught you how to dance?” He had a guess it was her stepfather.
“It was my mom who would bring me to those jazz clubs,” Vivian began. “I know, I was too young to be in those places but she just had to. You see, there was a father-daughter dance in my old school. I didn't go because I didn't really have a dad, and I actually hid the poster from my school diary then so she wouldn't find out. She's been working more shifts that time and I knew she was tired. But some nosy neighbor asked if I was sick since I wasn't in the dance last night.”
“She found out.”
“Yup. What she did was, she got me to wear this old sixties dress she found in the thrift shop. The both of us did. It was a matching set, and we took a bus to some jazz club. She was friends with the security there and she knew the band playing. She told them: “my daughter missed her father-daughter dance, and I want to take her to one”. They played this jazz and blues song and we danced. Then, Adam came and he danced with me too. In fact, all of the ladies and gentlemen there danced with me.”
“I'm glad you have that memory of her. That you still remember the happy times and not just…”
He had slipped. Vivian Pryor hasn't told Bruce Wayne about her mother. She told Batman that time they were in the crypts. But she brushed it off so easily and said, “I try to remember more of the happy things that happened now. For a time all of those happy things were gone and what I remember of my mother was finding her on that pavement, dead. But I learned that there are also happy memories that I can look back to. It was a tragedy what happened but my mom's life wasn't one. She made sure to remind us that she lived happily.
“One moment does not define a person's life. It's the journey they made, the memories they leave with those who mourn their passing. And to have someone to mourn you means you have lived life as it is meant to be.”
Bruce stopped in his tracks, pulling her to a halt as well. “Where did you read that from?”
“I didn't,” she grinned. “I thought it myself. Right now.”
“No. You can't just say something so deep just out of the blue,” he laughed.
“I swear! I didn't read it from somewhere.”
“I guess you really are an author.”
“An academic author.”
Looking into the darkness of the sea, Bruce sighed. “To have someone to mourn your passing… a haunting thought if you ask me.”
“You think no one will mourn you?”
“When my parents died Gotham mourned them, but there was only a handful of us who truly grieved. A handful of us who Thomas and Martha Wayne meant to. A friend, family, a son… most of those people are gone now.”
“I would grieve,” Vivian said.
“We barely know it each other.”
“I know but… don't take this the wrong way but I'm more sensitive to life around me than most people,” Vivian chose her words carefully. “It's like… it's like let's say the sea. Whenever it comes to the beach it leaves a mark on the sand. Give it a couple of decades or centuries and it can form something with it. I'm the surface of this sand or that cliff, and each person is an ocean who makes their mark and I feel everything them and everything about them…
“So, when the ocean suddenly disappears or dries up, I would know and it would hurt me more sometimes than it should.”
Because she was a witch. Because her magic makes her sensitive to life around her.
“It's one of the reasons when my pet bunny died I cried for weeks,” Vivian attempted to joke but when she saw Bruce's gaze on her she fell silent because he was loss for words. “We might have just met now, but you've helped me so much for the past few weeks.” As Bruce Wayne and Batman. “And after this night, I will grieve your loss. And I would mourn Gotham for the person they lost. The man who has a vision and has been fighting to save it.”
It was only then she realized how close they were. That he held her waist while still holding her hand, that he leaned down close and that she was whispering the last few sentences as he looked at her closely.
“Do you have rules against kissing on first dates?” Bruce teased.
Vivian shook her head, “Not tonight,” she pulled him down and kissed him.
Bruce wrapped his arms around her to pull her up. Her lips were soft and had the taste of the Affogato from earlier, and the way she pressed her tongue against his had him hold her tighter and wanting more. That's when he had her wrap her legs around him so he could kiss her properly, and to hold her entirely. At some point, they fell on the sand with Vivian straddling him and their lips still moving with one another.
Before it could escalate, Vivian pulled away. “But I do have one on sleeping with anyone on the first date.”
Bruce chuckled. “Understandable… you have a way with words, Professor.”
“Thank the dozens of philosophers whose works I've read for years now.”
Bruce reached up and brushed back a lock of red hair behind her ear and caressed her cheek. “Thank you for tonight.”
“I should be thanking you, Bruce. You know how to sweep a girl off her feet.”
He shook his head and cupped her cheek, and she leaned into his touch, nuzzling into his palm. “Thank you… I haven't had this kind of conversation for a long time now. Where I'm not guarded… where I can relax and talk to someone who actually listens… and who is not my butler.”
Vivian smiled and leaned down to kiss his lips again. “Anytime.”
“So, are you free again this Friday?”
Vivian laughed, “we haven't even finished this date.”
“Well, I want to see you again.”
“You know where I'm temporarily staying until my real estate agent finalizes the papers for my new condo. And if you ever need a listening friend, you can always call, and I'll always answer. Unless I have class.”
“As much as I want to get you access to Wayne Tower, I want this to be something between us for a while. Something they won't publicize in Gotham.”
“Understandable. I'll tell everyone it was just one date then.”
“But I hope you're free next Friday or maybe tomorrow.”
“I'm needed at the museum tomorrow. Next Friday. I'll make sure to clear my schedule for that.”
“And Vivian?”
“Yes, Bruce?”
“I will also grieve if you were to disappear.”
Vivian smiled. “Then I promise that I won't disappear… as long as you promise too.”
He knew it was foolish to make such a promise but Bruce said, “I will.”
~*~
Standing before Superman and Wonder Woman, Vivian felt her whole world crumbling after hearing what they said. Everything just felt numb after hearing them say to her, “Batman's gone, Vivian. We're so sorry.” And all they could give her was his cape and how it happened. All she heard was Bruce was gone and it was because of Darkseid.
“No,” Vivian spoke for the first time since Superman and Wonder Woman gave the news. “No, no, no, no!” Vivian cried and broke down. Alfred was quick to catch her and Damian ran to her side as she cried. “No, no, no! He can't,” Vivian clutched his cape and cowl trying to use as an anchor point to find him. Her magic flowed around her along with the Phoenix's magical energy.
“Viv,” Tim tried to console her but Vivian sobbed, her magic no longer glowing around her and a painful cry came from the woman.
“I can't feel him… I can't –” she cried. “I can't feel you…”
Seeing her inconsolable state, Damian faced Superman and Wonder Woman, and told them, “You've done enough.”
“Damian,” Dick chastised him. “It's not their –”
“A Kryptonian and an Amazon, Grayson,” Damian glared at him. “Father was a man… look at her, Dick.”
Dick did and saw Vivian crying on Alfred’s shoulder, still clutching on Bruce's cape and cowl, then to Damian and saw the tears building in his eyes. “Yeah, I think it's best you give us time,” he told the two heroes.
After Dick walked out the two heroes, he returned to the living room where Vivian still held onto the cape as she cried and grieved for the loss of her husband, and tried over and over to look for him. To feel his presence again but to avail.
“I can't feel him, Alfred,” she cried. “I can't feel Bruce.”
~*~
Pulled through the time stream and thrown to different times, Bruce woke in a convent bed with the sound of a voice calling his name, “Bruce!” Getting up, he reached for the candle on his bedside and lit a fire to bring light to his dark home.
“Quoth who?”
Silence.
Sighing, he placed back the candle on the best beside him where he saw the picture he drew of the red haired woman he kept seeing in his dreams. Her red hair, he painted it using red clay he found in the ground, and he kept an ample supply of the red clay in his current place of refuge to continue to paint the woman's portraits that slowly became clearer as days passed. It started from glimpses of her hair, then her brown eyes, her face was blurry at first but then her face would start to form.
The wind blew into his home and with it the scent of the ocean and the voice, “Bruce!”
“Vivian,” He spoke the name.
“Who is Vivian?” A nun came to his chambers. He was given his own quarters to keep him from those with fever and other ailments. “Finally recovering your memories, stranger?” Her Irish accent was strong.
“I cannot say for certain,” Bruce muttered.
“And this Vivian, whose name you speak of? Might she be the woman you have been painting day and night?”
“I do not know, Sister.”
The nun looked at him for a moment and said, “Pray, stranger. Pray that you remember so you may return to her whole.”
Bruce looked at the cross that hung on the wall across his bed then again to the portrait of the woman he drew. He chose to take her portrait and pray to her instead. Pray that he may remember and learn who it was that calls for his name “Bruce.”
Yes. His name. He remembers his name.
“My name, Sister,” he spoke before the nun left. “I remember the name given to me but not the name of thy kin.”
“And what is it?”
“Bruce.”
The nun smiled. “Well, good night, Mr. Bruce.”
The nun left the room and Bruce continued to look at the woman with red hair along with the image of the bat below. In a whisper, he repeated her name again and again. He came to this town with no name and no memory but an image of a woman with red hair.
“Do not… grieve, my Vivian,” he spoke in a whisper, the words coming from his heart. “I shall find you.”

@jegulus-microfic / march 14: choice / word count: 558
Stab it, strangle it, scoop out its gut, throw it off a cliff... it repeats over and over in his mind.
Four chains, three double crochet, three chains, repeat four times...
The first few times Pandora tried to teach him how to crochet were a total failure. The wool got tangled, the stitches were either too loose or too tight and picking up the crochet hook was a problem on its own. But since he learned to crochet, Regulus takes his knitting wherever he goes.
Today in particular, he has taken it upon himself to bring extra balls of wool, as he intends to be productive in the nearly three hours it will take him to travel by train from Liverpool to London to visit his estranged brother after nearly five years. And no, of course Regulus isn't nervous. That he's gripping his crochet needle tighter than necessary and knitting furiously has nothing to do with it. He doesn't even notice when the seat next to him is taken.
One, two, three... nine double crochets, his hands move skilfully creating new rows.
He has been trying to finish this tote bag for an eternity and... What the hell is that?
There are no mistakes in knitting, only design variations, the voice of his best friend echoes in his head.
Well, clearly Regulus made a mistake several rows back that's making his granny square look more like a rectangle, and there is no way to make it look intentional. With a huff, he has no choice but to start pulling the wool to undo his failed progress.
"No!" an urgent voice protests from his right side, leaving him confused.
Regulus turns his head slowly, scowling and ready for a confrontation, which is quickly forgotten when a pair of warm, honey-brown eyes open wide and stare back at him. Regulus frowns even more deeply.
"I'm sorry! I swear I didn't mean to intrude, but it's just that you were doing something beautiful and you took it apart so fast I couldn't help myself and-" the man continues speaking hurriedly but Regulus is more focused on the way a lone curl of brown hair covers part of his forehead, and his hands itch eagerly to touch it to find out if it's as soft as it looks.
"Yeah, never mind," is all the answer he gives before resuming his knitting slightly flushed.
Three chains, three double crochets-
"Where did you learn how to do that? I mean, crocheting. It's really cool, you got me hooked, you know what I mean?"
Regulus stares at him for a long moment refusing to let the ridiculous phrase have any effect on him.
The right corner of his lips betrays him and rises against his will.
"My name is James. Oh, and I need your surname to know-" Regulus merely covers James' mouth with one hand and his own face with the other.
"We'll see about the last name. I'm Regulus, and please stop saying all those embarrassing things."
It's safe to say that Regulus invested his nearly three hour journey very well getting to know this now not-longer-stranger... but once again he didn't finish the bag.
And well, big is their surprise when they find out that they are going to the same place to see the same person, but that's a different story.
In case you are wondering about the crocheting chant

——————————————————————
It was a nice summer day in Liverpool and your class and other people from your grade were getting settled in a school bus as you were about to go on a 4 week field trip , because of a shortage of teachers , so your school has to make time to find new ones . And even though it was a bit full when you and your friends were boarding the coach you still found three free rows and you got one to yourself right next to a window without any things to block it . Now you were chatting with your friend a row ahead when a boy from your class slid into the last empty seat next to you. He flashed a casual grin and said, “Seems like I’ve nabbed the final seat. Hope you don’t mind the company—uhm what is your name again ? “ you look at the boy a bit weirded out , because who Tf speaks to someone they don’t really know , right ? But to be polite you have him a light smile and stretched out your hand to and introduced yourself to him . " y/n – l/n y/n pleasure to meet you ! " the boy just smiles at you and shakes your hand and after a while you start to pull away and ask him for his name wich he finally shares with you … he was called Paul McCartney and then it clicked , he was the music obsessed boy you sat behind of in math class .
(Ugh you know what imma switch to first person perspective)
We both had made small talk from time to time in between school hours or had greeted each other in the school hallway but there was nothing more of any interaction than those . So as one figured after a bit of small talk, the conversation naturally fizzled out. You exchanged names and brief introductions, but now there was an awkward silence. You glanced out the window, watching the few teachers coming with you loading the bus with the bus driver , while he fiddled with his bags straps .
After some time the silence became insufferable and you had to start talking again .
“So, are you excited about the trip ? “ Paul looks up at you and replies with a relieved sigh
“Yeah, sounds interesting enough. I’m just hoping it’s not another one of those places where you’re not allowed to do anything but for things that have educational purposes .”
With slight intrigues I reply to him “Oh, I know what you mean. I find it super annoying . What’s the most trouble you’ve ever gotten into on a trip?”
Paul thinks for a Minute and then replies a few seconds later with a smile playing on his lips “Well, there was that time I tried to ‘borrow’ a statue’s hat at the last museum visit. Turns out, it wasn’t a prop. How about you?”
“I once got stuck in a gift shop because I was trying to sneak a peek at the secret stockroom. Got caught by the shopkeeper. Classic.”
“Sounds like we’re both experts in getting into mischief. Maybe we should stick together today. We could be a team of troublemakers.”
“Deal. Just promise you won’t get us thrown out.”
“No promises. But I’ll try my best. So, what’s your favorite part of these trips?”
“Probably the bus rides. It’s the only time we get to just talk and hang out without worrying about homework.”
“I’m with you there. The bus ride’s the best part. And who knows, maybe we’ll come up with a new adventure story by the end of the day.”
I nodded, trying to ignore the butterflies that were suddenly making themselves at home in my stomach. There was something about the way Paul spoke, so effortlessly casual yet with a glint of mischief behind every word. I hadn’t thought much about him before, but sitting next to him now, I couldn’t help but be intrigued.
“So, do you play any instruments?” I asked, half expecting a standard reply. It was a question that usually led to a predictable conversation, which, given the awkwardness earlier, felt like a safe bet.
He raised an eyebrow, a small smirk playing on his lips. “Funny you ask. I’ve been known to mess around with a bass now and then. You?”
“Mess around?” I echoed, laughing lightly. “That’s not very convincing. And no, I’m more of a listener, to be honest. Though I do own a dusty piano .”
“Ah, a listener. Even better. Musicians need an audience, after all,” he teased, tapping his fingers on the armrest as if playing an invisible rhythm.
I rolled my eyes playfully. “Are you trying to recruit me as your personal fan?”
“Well, it wouldn’t hurt to have someone in the crowd rooting for me,” he joked, but there was a flicker of something sincere in his eyes.
“Are you any good?” I asked, feeling the conversation loosening up as we both settled into the bus seats. The awkwardness from before had faded, replaced by a lightness that I hadn’t expected.
Paul shrugged modestly. “I suppose you’ll have to find out one day, won’t you?”
“Maybe I will,” I replied, half-smiling. There was a pause as I glanced out the window again. The teachers had finished loading the bags, and the bus was finally starting to pull away from the school. The familiar streets of Liverpool blurred past, but I could already feel the sense of freedom that came with leaving it all behind for a while.
Paul leaned back in his seat, stretching his legs out in front of him as much as the cramped bus would allow. “Four weeks, huh? Hard to believe we’re getting out of school for that long.”
“Yeah,” I agreed. “It’s weird, but kind of exciting. No classes, no homework... just us and a bunch of museums and... whatever else they’ve got planned.”
“Sounds like trouble waiting to happen,” he mused with a grin, then turned to me with a curious look. “So, what do you reckon we’ll do with all that free time?”
I shrugged, thinking it over. “Well, I guess we’ll just have to see where the trip takes us. Maybe we’ll be well-behaved and stick to the itinerary, or maybe we’ll end up sneaking off and finding our own adventures.”
“Now you’re talking,” he said, his grin widening. “I like the sound of that. Let’s make a pact, yeah? No matter what, we find a way to have some fun on this trip. Deal?”
I couldn’t help but smile. “Deal.”
We shook on it, and for the first time since he sat down next to me, the silence that followed felt comfortable. The kind of silence that didn’t need to be filled with words. I leaned back in my seat, feeling a little more at ease, and glanced over at him. He was staring out the window now, lost in thought, his fingers
The hours passed as the bus hummed along the winding roads out of Liverpool, and the initial excitement of the trip settled into a comfortable lull. Most of our classmates were either dozing off, flipping through magazines, or talking quietly among themselves. Paul had gone quiet beside me, staring out the window again with that distant look on his face. I wondered if he was thinking about his band or maybe even some new lyrics.
Eventually, he broke the silence. “You ever been away from home this long?”
I shook my head. “Not really. I mean, I’ve gone on a few trips with my family, but never for four weeks. Feels a bit strange, doesn’t it?”
“Yeah,” he agreed, stretching his legs out as far as they could go in the cramped space. “Not that I’m complaining, though. Gets me out of school for a bit. Gives me time to work on some songs without all the usual distractions.”
I turned toward him, curious. “What kind of songs are you working on?”
He smiled, but there was something almost shy about it this time. “Just, you know, stuff about life, love, that sort of thing. Trying to find a sound that feels right.”
“Sounds deep,” I teased lightly, though I was genuinely interested. “Think you’ll play any of them on this trip?”
Paul chuckled. “Not sure how well that’d go over with the teachers. But maybe if I can sneak my guitar along, we’ll see.”
“Hey, you’ve got four weeks to work your magic. You could start a bus sing-along or something,” I joked, imagining how chaotic that would get.
“Now that would be a sight,” he laughed. “Though I’m not sure everyone here’s ready for that. You might be the only one who appreciates my questionable taste in music.”
I smirked. “Questionable, huh? Now I’m curious what kind of tunes you’re into.”
He thought for a moment, tapping his fingers on the seat again, before grinning. “Tell you what, I’ll give you a taste later. But you’ve got to promise to be brutally honest—none of that polite nodding if you think it’s rubbish.”
“Deal,” I said, feeling a bit of excitement bubbling up. It wasn’t every day you got the chance to hear original music from a classmate who just might be the next big thing.
The bus hit another bump, jolting us both slightly, and Paul shifted in his seat, his expression turning a bit more mischievous . “You know, this trip could be a real chance to get away from all that usual school stuff—figure out what we’re actually good at, you know?”
I nodded, understanding what he meant. “Yeah, it’s nice to get a break from the usual routine. It feels like everything’s always about exams and homework, and you never really get time to think about what you actually want to do.”
He looked at me, his gaze steady. “Exactly. Feels like we’re just going through the motions most of the time. Maybe this trip’s the chance to shake things up a bit.”
We shared a moment of quiet understanding. It was strange to think that this boy I’d barely talked to before today was someone who seemed to get it—the feeling of wanting more than just the typical school routine, of wanting to do something that mattered.
After a moment, Paul’s easy grin returned, and he tilted his head toward the front of the bus. “Think we’ll make it through this trip without any major disasters?”
I laughed. “Not a chance. But hey, at least we’ll have some good stories to tell when we get back.”
He chuckled, leaning back in his seat again. “That’s the spirit. Let’s make sure they’re worth telling.”
With that, the conversation fell into a more comfortable silence. The miles stretched out ahead of us, and I found myself looking forward to whatever came next. Maybe this trip would be more than just a break from school. Maybe it would be the start of something… interesting.
As I glanced over at Paul, who was now lost in his thoughts again, I couldn’t help but feel that this was just the beginning of whatever adventure we were about to stumble into.
The bus continued to hum along the road, and after what felt like an eternity of winding through the countryside, I noticed Paul had gone quiet again. He was still beside me, lost in thought, staring out the window at the rolling hills. The earlier ease between us had settled into something quieter, something a little more comfortable but still new.
I shifted in my seat, feeling the stiffness in my legs from sitting for so long. Paul must have noticed because he turned to me with a small smile. “Long ride, huh?”
“Yeah,” I agreed. “My legs are starting to feel like they’re turning into jelly.”
He chuckled softly. “Maybe we should’ve brought a guitar or something. Could’ve passed the time with a sing-along.”
I smiled at that. “And what would you have played? Something we all know, or one of your originals?”
Paul shrugged, that same casual smirk playing on his lips. “Depends. I might’ve tested out a new tune if I felt like the crowd was up for it.”
I raised an eyebrow. “New tune? So, you’ve got some secret songs you’re hiding from us?”
“Not exactly,” he said, leaning back in his seat. “Just a few ideas, you know? Scribbles in a notebook, half-finished lyrics… nothing special.”
I laughed softly. “I doubt that. You seem like the kind of person who’s always working on something creative.”
Paul looked at me, a little surprised by the compliment. “Maybe. It’s just… you never know when something’s going to stick. Sometimes, you’re just playing around, and then all of a sudden, it turns into something real.”
I nodded, feeling a bit of admiration for him that I hadn’t expected. “I guess that’s the exciting part, right? Not knowing what’s going to come out of it?”
“Exactly,” he said, his eyes lighting up a bit. “That’s what keeps it interesting.”
We fell into another comfortable silence, and this time it didn’t feel awkward at all. Instead, it felt like we were both content to let the conversation come and go as it pleased. Maybe this trip wouldn’t be so bad after all.
I glanced over at Paul, feeling the conversation drifting into silence again, and decided to ask something that had been on my mind. “So… do you play in a band or anything? You mentioned the bass earlier.”
He looked a little surprised at the question, then smiled, a hint of something more serious in his expression. “Yeah, actually. A few of us have been messing around with the idea. It’s nothing big yet, just playing a few tunes in garages or wherever we can.”
I tilted my head, intrigued. “That sounds pretty cool. How’d you get into it?”
Paul shrugged, a bit more relaxed now. “I’ve always loved music, ever since I was a kid. My dad plays piano, and I just sort of… picked things up. Then, once I got my hands on a guitar, there was no going back.”
“That’s impressive,” I said, genuinely meaning it. “I always thought about learning an instrument, but I never really got past a few half-hearted piano lessons.”
He chuckled. “Piano’s not a bad place to start. But you know, it’s never too late to try something new. Could always join us for a jam session.”
“Me?” I laughed, shaking my head. “I wouldn’t even know where to begin.”
“Hey, everyone’s got to start somewhere,” Paul said with a grin. “Besides, it’s more about having fun than being perfect.”
I smiled at that, appreciating his easygoing attitude. “I’ll keep that in mind. Maybe I’ll surprise you one day and show up with a tambourine or something.”
He laughed, the sound light and easy. “Now that would be something. We could always use more percussion.”
Paul’s laughter lingered for a moment, and I couldn’t help but smile, feeling a bit more comfortable now. The awkwardness had melted away, replaced by a casual warmth between us.
“So,” I said, glancing out the window at the countryside rolling by, “what kind of music do you guys play? Is it, like, rock and roll?”
He nodded, his eyes lighting up with excitement. “Yeah, that’s the idea. Rock and roll, a bit of skiffle—stuff that makes you want to move, you know? We’re still figuring it out, but we’ve been covering a lot of Chuck Berry, Little Richard… those kinds of tunes.”
“Chuck Berry, huh?” I raised an eyebrow. “That’s some serious stuff. You must be pretty good.”
Paul shrugged modestly, though there was a hint of pride in his voice. “We’re getting there. It’s all about practice. But it’s not just about being good—it’s about having fun with it, and seeing where it takes us.”
I nodded, impressed. “That sounds amazing. I don’t know many people who actually follow through on something like that.”
“Well,” he said with a grin, “we’ll see if we can make something of it. For now, it’s just nice to have an excuse to hang out with the lads and make some noise.”
“Do you have a name for the band yet?” I asked, leaning into the conversation now, genuinely curious.
Paul laughed, shaking his head. “Not yet. We’ve been throwing around ideas, but nothing’s stuck so far. Naming a band’s harder than you’d think. It’s got to feel right, you know?”
I smiled at that. “Yeah, I can imagine. It’s like naming a baby or something—it’s got to fit.”
“Exactly!” He pointed at me, nodding. “We don’t want to pick something we’ll regret later on.”
“Well, if you need any suggestions, I’m here to help,” I said playfully.
Paul chuckled. “I might just take you up on that.”
We fell into a more comfortable silence after that, but this time it didn’t feel awkward. Instead, it felt like the start of something new, like this conversation was the first step toward an unexpected friendship. The bus continued to rumble along the road, and I leaned back in my seat, feeling lighter than I had at the beginning of the trip.
As the scenery blurred by outside, Paul tapped his fingers on his knee, lost in thought. “You know,” he said after a moment, “I think this trip could be a good time to work on some new songs. Get some fresh ideas.”
“Yeah?” I asked, intrigued. “What inspires you when you write?”
He tilted his head, considering. “Anything, really. A bit of life, love, people I meet… sometimes it’s just a feeling that comes out of nowhere. You never know when inspiration will hit, so you’ve got to be ready.”
“That’s pretty deep,” I said, half-teasing but also impressed. “I guess I never really thought about songwriting like that.”
Paul smiled at me, his eyes softening. “It’s not as complicated as it sounds. You just… write what you feel, you know? Maybe one day you’ll give it a try.”
“Maybe,” I said, though I wasn’t sure if I had that kind of talent. Still, the idea of trying something new, of exploring creativity, sounded appealing.
The bus hit a small bump, jostling us both in our seats, and we shared a brief laugh at the unexpected jolt. The conversation started to drift again, but this time, it felt natural. We didn’t need to fill the silence with forced words. The bus continued on, carrying us toward whatever adventures lay ahead.
I couldn’t help but wonder what the next few weeks would bring, and whether this unexpected connection with Paul would turn into something more than just a fleeting conversation on a school bus.
After we all gathered our bags, the teachers started dividing us into our assigned rooms. The sun was nearly set by now, casting a soft orange glow through the windows of the old estate. The long day of travel had caught up with everyone, and the buzz of excitement had faded into tired chatter.
"Y/N, Room 12," one of the teachers called, ticking off names on a clipboard. I nodded, tightening my grip on my bag and heading inside the building. Paul was still beside me, waiting to hear his own room assignment.
"McCartney, Room 9," another teacher announced, and Paul raised his hand with a small grin.
“Looks like we’re not too far from each other,” he said, adjusting his bag over his shoulder. “Not bad.”
I smiled back. “Yeah, close enough to find each other if we need to plot any late-night escapes.”
Paul laughed lightly. “You never know. But for tonight, I think I’m just going to crash. Too knackered for any adventures.”
"Same here," I agreed, stifling a yawn. The thought of a bed sounded incredibly appealing after a long day cooped up on the bus.
We both followed the hallway until it split off into different sections. My room was down one corridor, and his was down another. Paul turned to face me as we reached the split, flashing a tired but sincere smile.
“Well, goodnight then,” he said softly. “See you tomorrow?”
“Definitely,” I replied. “Goodnight, Paul. Sleep well.”
“You too,” he said with a small wave before turning and walking off toward his room.
I headed to my own room, pushing open the door to find it was already half-occupied by another girl from my grade. She looked just as exhausted as I felt, already halfway through unpacking her things onto her bed. We exchanged tired smiles and quick introductions before both agreeing to call it a night and save any further conversation for tomorrow.
After a quick change into my pajamas, I climbed into bed, the weight of the day finally settling over me. I could hear faint murmurs of conversation through the thin walls, including what might have been Paul's voice from down the hall. But soon, even that faded as the building grew quiet, and sleep started to pull me under. The last thought I had before drifting off was that this trip was just beginning, and I had a feeling there was much more to come—especially when it came to Paul.
-Paul’s POV -
Paul flopped onto his bed with a contented sigh, letting his tired limbs sink into the surprisingly soft mattress. The room was modest but comfortable, with a pair of neatly made beds, a small dresser, and a window that let in a sliver of the moonlight.
George, who was sprawled on his own bed across the room, looked up from fiddling with his guitar case. “So, how’s your day been, mate?” he asked, his voice carrying a mix of curiosity and exhaustion.
Paul grinned, propping himself up on one elbow. “Not too bad. Got to know someone from our class a bit better. You know, Y/N? They ended up sitting next to me on the bus.”
George raised an eyebrow, his interest piqued. “Oh, really? And how’d that go?”
“Pretty well, actually,” Paul said, shrugging. “We talked about the trip, a bit about music. Seems like a decent sort. We’re both in for some fun, I reckon.”
George smirked. “And here I thought you’d be too busy plotting your next great escape to talk to anyone.”
Paul chuckled. “Hey, a little adventure is always better with company, right? Besides, I didn’t exactly get any time to plot today. The bus ride was more about trying not to fall asleep and making sure I didn’t annoy everyone around me.”
George laughed, the sound echoing slightly in the small room. “Fair enough. And what did you think of the place so far? Not too shabby, huh?”
“Yeah, it’s got its charm,” Paul said, glancing around the room. “Bit different from the usual. Feels like we’re really on a proper adventure now. I mean, four weeks in this old place? It’s bound to be interesting.”
George nodded, strumming a few chords on his guitar absentmindedly. “Sounds like it’ll be a good time. And you know what they say—new experiences are always worth a shot.”
“Exactly,” Paul agreed, sitting up and stretching. “It’ll be nice to get away from the usual grind. Plus, we’ll have plenty of time to mess about, come up with new tunes, and maybe even make some new friends.”
George glanced over, his expression thoughtful. “You’ve got that right. And with this lot, who knows what kind of trouble we’ll get up to.”
Paul grinned, feeling a surge of excitement. “Trouble, new friends, and maybe even some inspiration for new songs. Sounds like a good plan to me.”
As the conversation continued, the two friends talked about their plans for the upcoming weeks, sharing their hopes and expectations. The room was filled with a relaxed, easy camaraderie that only grew stronger with the passing minutes. It was a quiet, comfortable end to a long day, and as Paul finally settled into his bed, he couldn’t shake the feeling that this trip might just be the beginning of something extraordinary.
“Well, time for some shut-eye,” Paul said, stifling a yawn. “Big day ahead tomorrow.”
George nodded in agreement, his guitar case now closed and resting by his bed. “Goodnight, Paul. See you in the morning.”
“Goodnight, George,” Paul replied, turning off the bedside lamp and letting the darkness envelop the room. As he drifted off to sleep, his thoughts wandered back to Y/N and the promise of the adventures that lay ahead.
As George’s breathing settled into a rhythmic, steady pattern, Paul lay awake in the darkness, staring up at the ceiling. His mind was a whirl of thoughts and images from the day.
He couldn’t help but replay the moments he’d shared with Y/N. Her easy smile and quick wit had made a strong impression on him. He found himself wondering what it would be like to spend more time with her, to see where their conversations could lead. There was something undeniably engaging about her—a spark of curiosity and a willingness to engage in lighthearted banter that had struck a chord with him.
Paul thought about the little details of their interaction: how she had seemed genuinely interested when he mentioned his band and how she had laughed at his jokes. The thought of her intrigued him more than he expected. He recalled the way she looked when she mentioned her dusty piano, her eyes lighting up just a bit. He wondered if she might be someone who could appreciate the kind of music he was passionate about, someone who might even share some of his own interests.
He shifted slightly in his bed, trying to get comfortable as he continued to muse over the potential for new friendships and adventures. The trip was supposed to be a break from the usual grind, but Paul was beginning to see it as a chance to explore not just new places, but new relationships and possibilities.
As the minutes ticked by, Paul’s thoughts wandered to what the next few weeks might hold. Would he and Y/N find themselves paired up for group activities, or would they stumble upon shared interests that brought them closer? He imagined showing her his guitar, maybe even playing a few of his songs, and wondered if she would be interested in hearing them.
There was a small thrill in the uncertainty of it all—the sense of adventure that came with not knowing exactly what was around the corner. Paul felt a mix of excitement and nervous anticipation. The future was full of potential, and he was eager to see where it would lead.
-Time skip to the next morning -
(Still Paul’s pov)
Eventually, the gentle hum of the night and the comfortable rhythm of his own thoughts began to lull him into sleep. Paul’s mind settled on the possibilities that lay ahead, the idea of new friendships, and the hope that this trip would bring some unexpected but welcome surprises.
Paul settled at the breakfast table with his friends and bandmates, John, George, and Ringo. The morning sun filtered through the dining room windows, casting a warm glow on the old wooden tables. The room buzzed with the chatter of students excitedly discussing the day’s activities. Paul, however, found himself somewhat distracted.
As his friends debated over the itinerary for the day, Paul’s gaze kept drifting toward Y/N’s table. She was laughing at something her friends had said, her laughter a pleasant melody that seemed to stand out against the background noise. Paul tried to focus on the conversation at his table, but he couldn’t help but glance over every so often.
John, ever perceptive, noticed Paul’s wandering attention. With a smirk playing on his lips, he leaned closer to Paul and nudged him with an elbow. “Oi, Paul, what’s caught your eye?”
Paul snapped out of his daydream, his face warming as he realized he had been caught. He looked at John with a sheepish grin. “Oh, nothing much. Just... taking in the morning.”
John raised an eyebrow, clearly not convinced. “Right. It seems like you’ve got a special interest in Y/N this morning. Didn’t know you were so keen on the company.”
Paul tried to brush it off, though he could feel himself blushing. “I was just thinking about how the trip might turn out. It’s nice to have some company, that’s all.”
John’s grin widened, clearly enjoying the teasing. “Well, if you’re thinking of making a move, you might want to be subtle about it. Can’t have you making a fool of yourself right out of the gate.”
Ringo, who had been listening with amusement, chimed in. “Looks like Paul’s got himself a bit of a crush. We’ll have to keep an eye on him.”
Paul chuckled nervously, trying to regain his composure. “It’s not like that. Just trying to figure out how we might end up interacting more. Could be interesting, you know?”
George, sensing Paul’s discomfort, gave him a supportive nudge. “Don’t worry about it too much. We’re all here to have a good time. If you end up talking to Y/N more, that’s just part of the adventure.”
As breakfast wound down, the group’s attention shifted to the plans for the day. Paul couldn’t shake the feeling of excitement mingled with nerves. He stole one last glance at Y/N, who was now chatting animatedly with her friends. Despite the teasing from his bandmates, Paul felt a genuine eagerness to get to know her better.
The transition from breakfast to the first activity of the day was quick. The group gathered their things and made their way to the bus, ready for the day’s adventures. Paul joined his friends, the teasing continuing in good spirits, but his mind kept drifting back to the promise of new experiences and the possibility of spending more time with Y/N.
As the bus pulled away from the accommodation, the landscape of the small town began to unfold before them. The anticipation of the day ahead mingled with Paul’s curiosity about Y/N, making the journey feel both exciting and full of potential.
The bus pulled up to the Natural History Museum, and the students began to disembark with excited chatter. The grand facade of the museum loomed ahead, its imposing columns and intricate stonework hinting at the treasures inside. As the group gathered in front of the entrance, the teachers began organizing everyone into pairs for the day’s exploration.
Paul and Y/N had been mingling with their friends, chatting about the exhibits they hoped to see, when one of the teachers called out. “Alright, everyone, we’re going to pair up for the museum tour. Make sure you’re with someone you can work well with!”
Paul glanced over at Y/N, who was also scanning the crowd, likely looking for a familiar face. Just as he was about to suggest they stick together, the teacher’s voice rang out again. “Paul McCartney and Y/N L/N, you’re a pair for the day. Find a partner and get started on the tour!”
Paul’s heart skipped a beat as he turned to Y/N, who looked pleasantly surprised. “Looks like we’re teamed up,” he said with a grin.
Y/N returned the smile. “Guess we’re spending the day together. Ready for some museum exploration?”
Paul nodded enthusiastically. “Definitely. Let’s make the most of it.”
As they entered the museum, the grandeur of the exhibits immediately captured their attention. Fossils, minerals, and ancient artifacts filled the expansive halls, each display more intriguing than the last. The museum guide provided a brief overview of the day’s activities and handed out maps, urging everyone to start exploring.
Paul and Y/N made their way through the exhibits, their conversation flowing easily as they navigated the museum’s vast interior. The initial awkwardness from the bus seemed to have dissipated, replaced by a shared curiosity and enthusiasm for the exhibits. They wandered through the dinosaur gallery, marveled at the minerals on display, and even took turns trying to identify the various fossils.
At one point, they found themselves in front of a particularly impressive diorama featuring prehistoric mammals. Paul leaned closer, examining the display. “These creatures are incredible. Imagine what it must have been like when they roamed the Earth.”
Y/N nodded, her eyes wide with fascination. “It’s amazing to think about how different the world was back then. I’ve always found stuff like this so fascinating.”
Paul glanced at her, noting the genuine excitement in her expression. “You know, I’ve got a bit of a fascination with history myself. Not just the music stuff. There’s something about learning how the world used to be that’s really intriguing.”
Y/N smiled, clearly enjoying the conversation. “I can relate. It’s like stepping back in time and seeing things from a different perspective. Makes you appreciate how much things have changed.”
As they continued their tour, Paul found himself more and more comfortable around Y/N. Their conversation flowed effortlessly, punctuated by shared discoveries and laughter. It was clear that their time together was turning into something enjoyable and meaningful.
With each exhibit they explored, the day seemed to get better. The initial excitement of the field trip had settled into a genuine connection between the two of them. By the time they took a break in the museum’s café, Paul and Y/N were laughing and chatting like old friends.
“So,” Paul said, taking a sip of his drink, “how are you finding the museum so far?”
“It’s been fantastic,” Y/N replied, her eyes sparkling. “I didn’t expect to enjoy it this much, but having a good tour guide and a great partner definitely makes a difference.”
Paul grinned. “I’d say we make a pretty good team. Here’s to more adventures.”
Y/N raised her cup in a mock toast. “Cheers to that.”
As they finished their break and headed back to explore the remaining exhibits, Paul couldn’t help but feel that the day was turning out better than he’d imagined. Spending time with Y/N had been unexpectedly enjoyable, and he was looking forward to what the rest of the field trip would bring.
-Y/Ns POV -
As Paul and I finished our break in the café, we headed toward the museum’s next big attraction: the Butterfly House. The sun streamed through the glass ceiling, creating a warm, almost magical atmosphere. The Butterfly House was a lush, green paradise filled with colorful flowers and fluttering butterflies of every shade imaginable.
“Wow, this place is incredible,” I said, looking around at the vibrant display of nature.
Paul grinned, clearly just as taken with the exhibit. “It’s like stepping into a different world, isn’t it? All these butterflies—such a riot of colors.”
We walked along the winding path through the Butterfly House, surrounded by the gentle hum of butterflies flitting about. The air was filled with the sweet scent of blooming flowers, and the soft rustle of the leaves added to the serene ambiance.
I watched as a particularly large butterfly landed on a nearby flower. “Look at that one—it’s huge! I’ve never seen one like it before.”
Paul leaned closer, squinting at the butterfly. “That’s a Swallowtail, I think. They’re pretty common, but they’re always impressive to see up close.”
We continued down the path, pausing occasionally to admire the butterflies landing on the flowers and even a few that landed on our shoulders or arms. It felt like a gentle, almost playful interaction with nature.
“So,” Paul said, breaking the pleasant silence, “what do you think of all this? It’s pretty amazing, right?”
“I love it,” I replied, smiling at the sight of a butterfly landing gently on my hand. “It’s so peaceful and beautiful. I never expected to enjoy it this much.”
Paul chuckled, clearly enjoying the moment. “I’m glad we’re having a good time. It’s nice to just take a break from the usual routine and soak in something like this.”
We continued walking, enjoying the beauty around us. Paul’s easy demeanor and the relaxed environment made for a perfect combination, and I found myself feeling more at ease with each passing moment.
After spending some time in the Butterfly House, we decided to explore the museum’s main exhibition hall. The hall was grand and filled with a diverse range of exhibits, from ancient artifacts to natural history displays.
As we moved through the various exhibits, Paul pointed out interesting facts and shared his own observations, making the experience more engaging. We found ourselves getting lost in conversations about everything from historical events to the mysteries of the natural world.
“This place is a treasure trove of information,” I said, looking around at the impressive displays. “There’s so much to take in.”
Paul nodded, his enthusiasm evident. “It really is. I could spend all day here just exploring and learning new things.”
We spent hours wandering through the exhibits, and as the day went on, I felt a growing sense of camaraderie with Paul. Our shared curiosity and enthusiasm made for great company, and I was genuinely enjoying our time together.
As we made our way back to the entrance, Paul looked over at me with a smile. “So, how do you feel about the day so far?”
“It’s been fantastic,” I said, returning his smile. “I didn’t expect to have such a great time. Thanks for making it so enjoyable.”
Paul’s eyes sparkled with a mix of gratitude and amusement. “Glad to hear that. It’s been a pleasure exploring with you.”
We walked out of the museum together, the sun beginning to set and casting a warm glow over the city. The day had been filled with discovery and laughter, and I found myself looking forward to more moments like this as the field trip continued.
As Paul and I made our way back to the bus after a full day at the museum, we decided to take one last stroll around the museum grounds. We came across a small garden area that had been carefully maintained and was home to a variety of plants and, of course, more butterflies.
I stopped to admire a particularly vibrant flower bed, and Paul followed my gaze. “Look at that—more butterflies. They really seem to love this place.”
I chuckled and pointed to a patch of bugs crawling on the leaves. “You know, seeing all these bugs makes me think of something ridiculous.”
Paul raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “Oh? What’s that?”
“Well,” I began with a grin, “I couldn’t help but notice that some of these little guys look like they’re having a bit of a band meeting. If I had to name a band after these bugs, I’d call them ‘The Beetles.’”
Paul blinked, then burst into laughter. “The Beetles? That’s brilliant! They’d definitely have a unique sound—imagine their hit single, ‘I Want to Hold Your Beetle.’”
I laughed along with him, enjoying the playful banter. “Exactly! And their debut album could be ‘With a Little Help from My Bugs.’”
Paul wiped a tear from his eye, still chuckling. “You’ve got a real knack for coming up with names. I’m impressed.”
“Well,” I said, “if you ever need a band name or a joke for your future concerts, you know where to find me.”
We continued our walk, still laughing about the joke. The sun was setting, casting a warm golden hue over the museum grounds. As we approached the bus, Paul looked at me with a thoughtful expression.
“You know,” he said, “that’s actually not a bad idea. I think ‘The Beetles’ could work—if only there were enough bugs to fill out the band.”
“Hey, you never know,” I said with a wink. “Maybe we’ll discover a whole new world of insect rock stars.”
We boarded the bus, the laughter from our earlier joke still lingering in the air. As we found our seats, Paul and I exchanged smiles, feeling a new level of camaraderie. It had been a day full of discoveries and laughter, and I couldn’t wait to see what other adventures awaited us on this field trip.
As we settled back into our seats on the bus, the remnants of our laughter still lingering, I couldn’t help but continue with the playful theme. “You know,” I said with a mischievous grin, “if you’re serious about naming a band after these bugs, maybe you should tweak the name a bit.”
Paul raised an eyebrow, clearly intrigued. “Oh? What do you have in mind?”
“Well,” I began, “instead of ‘The Beetles,’ why not change it to ‘The Beatles’? It sounds a bit more... musical, don’t you think?”
Paul’s eyes widened in surprise as he processed the suggestion. “The Beatles? That’s actually quite clever. It’s got a nice ring to it, doesn’t it?”
“Exactly,” I said, pleased with his reaction. “And it’s got that whole play on words thing going on—‘beat’ as in rhythm and ‘beatle’ as in the bug. It’s perfect for a band.”
Paul chuckled, shaking his head in amazement. “You know, you might be onto something there. If I ever start a band, I might just have to use that name.”
I laughed. “Well, if that ever happens, I expect a backstage pass.”
Paul grinned. “Deal. And I’ll make sure to credit you for the name idea.”
As the bus began to pull away, taking us to our accommodations for the night, Paul and I continued chatting about music and our favorite bands. The playful banter had turned into a more engaging conversation, and I was enjoying every moment of it.
The name ‘The Beatles’ had become an inside joke between us, a reminder of a day filled with unexpected fun and connection. As we arrived at our lodgings and prepared for the evening, I couldn’t help but feel that this field trip was turning out to be far more interesting than I’d originally anticipated.
As the days rolled by on our field trip, what started as a casual acquaintance had evolved into something much more meaningful. By the time the final week arrived, Paul and I had settled into a comfortable rhythm, our conversations flowing effortlessly and our shared laughter becoming a staple of our daily interactions.
Our time exploring museums, historical sites, and even the occasional impromptu adventure had drawn us closer. We had spent countless hours together, whether it was discussing our favorite bands, trying to solve random trivia questions, or simply enjoying the quiet moments on the bus rides between destinations.
The final week of the trip arrived with a sense of bittersweet anticipation. On one hand, we were looking forward to returning home and sharing our experiences with friends and family. On the other, it was hard to imagine not seeing Paul every day, not sharing those spontaneous jokes or planning our next playful escapade.
One evening, as we sat on a bench overlooking a scenic park near our lodgings, I turned to Paul, who was idly strumming on his guitar. The soft strains of his music blended with the tranquil surroundings, creating a serene atmosphere that seemed to echo the sentiment of our time together.
“Can you believe it’s almost over?” I asked, watching as the last rays of sunlight painted the sky in hues of orange and pink.
Paul glanced up, his expression thoughtful. “It’s gone by so quickly. Feels like just yesterday we were trying to come up with band names for a bunch of bugs.”
I laughed softly, the memory bringing a warm feeling. “Yeah, and who would have thought that joke would turn into one of our favorite inside jokes?”
Paul smiled, setting his guitar aside and turning to face me. “It’s been an amazing trip. I didn’t expect to make such a good friend, let alone someone I’d look forward to seeing every day.”
I met his gaze, feeling a flutter of emotion. “I know what you mean. This trip has been a lot more memorable because of you.”
We shared a comfortable silence, the evening air cool against our skin. The park was quiet except for the distant sounds of other tourists and the occasional rustle of leaves. It was a peaceful moment, one that seemed to encapsulate everything we had experienced together over the past few weeks.
As the sun set and the stars began to twinkle in the sky, I felt a sense of gratitude for the connection we had built. The upcoming departure felt like a poignant end to a chapter that had brought unexpected joy and companionship.
Paul’s voice broke the silence gently. “You know, even when this trip ends, I hope we stay in touch. It’s been really great getting to know you.”
I nodded, smiling warmly. “I’d like that too. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m glad we’ve shared it.”
As we sat there, watching the stars emerge and the city lights begin to twinkle in the distance, I couldn’t help but feel that this final week had been the culmination of something truly special. It was the end of an adventure, but also the beginning of a new connection that I hoped would last long after the field trip was over.
The final days of our field trip flew by in a whirlwind of excitement and nostalgia. Before we knew it, the bus was pulling back into our school parking lot, and the familiar sights of our hometown began to come into view. As we disembarked and said our goodbyes to the teachers and other students, there was a palpable sense of both relief and sadness.
Paul and I lingered near the bus, our luggage in hand, as the excitement of returning home mingled with the wistfulness of leaving behind the memorable experiences we had shared. We chatted about our favorite moments and laughed over inside jokes from the trip, trying to hold onto the easy camaraderie we had built.
As the crowd began to thin and students reunited with their families, Paul glanced at me with a thoughtful expression. “Hey,” he began, scratching the back of his neck nervously, “there’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you.”
I looked at him, curiosity piqued. “Yeah? What’s up?”
Paul hesitated for a moment before taking a deep breath. “Well, we’ve spent a lot of time together over the past few weeks, and I’ve really enjoyed it. I was wondering if you’d like to go out with me sometime. Maybe catch a movie or just hang out, you know?”
I felt a surge of warmth at his words, a mixture of surprise and happiness. “Are you asking me out on a date?” I asked, trying to keep my tone light but unable to hide the excitement in my voice.
Paul’s cheeks flushed slightly, and he nodded, a hopeful smile on his lips. “Yeah, I guess I am. I’d really like to get to know you even better.”
I smiled back, feeling a flutter of excitement. “I’d like that too. It sounds like a lot of fun.”
Paul’s grin widened, and he let out a relieved laugh. “Great! I’ll figure out a time and place, and we can make plans. I promise not to drag you into any more bug-related band name discussions.”
I laughed, shaking my head. “I’ll hold you to that. But seriously, I’m looking forward to it.”
As we gathered our belongings and headed toward the school entrance, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of anticipation for what was to come. The field trip had been an unforgettable experience, and now, with this new chapter beginning, I was eager to see where it would lead. The prospect of spending more time with Paul, exploring our growing connection, and creating new memories made the end of the trip feel like a new beginning.

Manchester Meet-cute (Ona Batlle x Reader)
This is my first ever fic! I hope you like it :)
One January morning, in an unexpected turn of events, you found yourself wandering the streets of Manchester all by yourself. This was not how you had planned to spend your England-visit: just yesterday you met up with your friend Amy, who lived in Liverpool, to go on a small road trip to visit another friend in London, and to do some sightseeing in both Manchester and Birmingham on the way there. However, Amy had the infuriating ability to fall in love with a stranger in under a second, and that is exactly what she did a mere 3 hours before your arrival. At least she had the decency to take you on a small tour trough Liverpool and to drop you off in Manchester the next day, before hopping on a plane to Paris herself with some guy named Louis, or Luke or whatever.
So here you were, all by yourself in a new city in a foreign country. You weren’t used to traveling alone, but you actually didn’t mind some peace and quiet for once. You bought a map somewhere and spend majority of the morning sightseeing the city centre. For English standards, the weather had actually been quite nice, which of course was too good to be true. Around noon, it suddenly started pouring and you quickly made your way into a lovely little coffee shop. You went up to the coffee bar and ordered a large cappuccino. After some smalltalk with the barista you picked up your coffee to head to a free table by the window. Your small journey to the table was rudely interrupted however, when a rather hasty individual collided with your elbow connected to your coffee holding hand. You watched as if in slow motion as your cup flew up in the air and the entirety of its hot contents came raining down on you and soaked your favourite sweater.
“AY DIOS MIO! I am so, so sorry. Why am I such an idiot?” A panicked voice cried out whilst you rapidly wiped as much of your large cappuccino of your face and sweater as you could. “It’s okay, don’t worry about it” you spoke, still wiping. “No, it’s not! Let me at least buy you a new coffee, please?” “You really don’t have to-” “I insist.” You finally looked up at the clumsy sweater ruining girl in front of you, only to be met with a pair of beautiful hazel eyes and a slightly worried smile. “Yeah, okay”
“Sorry about your sweater” She said, handing you a fresh cappuccino. “How much did it cost? I’ll give you some money for a new one.” “No, you don’t have to do that. It’s all good.” You answered, not willing to accept such a generous offer from a stranger. “Please, it’s a nice sweater, I have to make it up to you somehow.” She begged, still looking rather concerned. “You know what, you can tell me what I should do or see in Manchester on a Sunday. It’s my first time here.”
You sat down at a table together and she talked about her favourite places around Manchester for a while and you listened attentively whilst sipping your coffee. “I am Y/N by the way” you said after a while, realising you never properly introduced yourselves. “Hi Y/N” she smiled, having the same realisation “I am Ona”. “So, Ona, not to be blunt, but you are not from here either, are you?” “No I am not” she giggled, “I am from Spain, but I’ve lived here for a while now.”. “Ah, la bella españa” you tried your very best at the pronunciation. “¿Hablas español?” she asked, her eyes widening slightly. “No, no, un poco, pero no es bien” you stuttered shyly. Ona giggled again at your face growing redder by the second. “That wasn’t bad you know.” “Thanks” you said, certain that she was just being polite.
“So erm,” you started, slowly getting red again “do you maybe feel like visiting any of those places you were talking about earlier, like now, with me?” Ona checked the time on her phone. “Oh shit, erm, I sort of have to go now, I have a football match later.” You suddenly realised how bold your question was and started to regret ever asking it when she quickly added: “But maybe we can meet up afterwards? I’ll show you around Manchester by night” She send you a small wink which made your cheeks flush yet again. “Yeah, sure that sounds amazing. So where is this football match?” You asked, taking the last sip of your coffee. “Old Trafford” Ona mumbled. You surely would’ve spat it out your coffee you hadn’t just swallowed it. “I’m sorry, did you just say Old Trafford? As in, the Manchester United stadium?” “Well look who did their homework” Ona smiled. You just stared at her, too stunned to speak. “What? Okay yes, I play for United, I am a professional footballer.” You continued your staring, this time with your mouth wide open. She rolled her eyes “It’s not a big deal, it’s just my job.” She smiled again “That is so cool” You finally spoke. “Are you any good?” “Well I do play for United, soo, I guess I’m all right.” She chuckled. “Right yeah, of course, sorry.” You said, mentally smacking yourself on the head for asking such a stupid question. “You know, Y/N, if you don’t have anything to do today you could come watch the game later, if you want to judge for yourself wether I am any good.” She offered. “Unless you don’t want to of course, I don’t even know if you like football, so no pressure, I won’t mind if you say no so-” “I would love that” You interrupted. “And I’m sure you’re great.” Now it was her turn to blush. “Okay, I do really have to go now, but I will send you all the info once I get you a seat.” Ona said whilst getting up and hastily putting on her coat. “Ona,” you spoke, and she stopped to look at you “exactly how will you send me the info?” “Text” she answered quickly whilst continuing to gather her things. “Oh, of course, idiota” she mumbled to herself “so, erm, can I get your number, Y/N?” “I thought you’d never ask” you chuckled.
After a shower and a change of clothes at the hotel you were staying at, you hopped on a bus towards Old Trafford. It was crowded with people in United jerseys and hoodies, talking about the upcoming game. You overheard people mentioning Ona’s name a few times, and started to realise she was a very important player. You lightly chuckled to yourself, amazed at how you got yourself into this situation.
Ona arranged for you to sit in the family and friends area, which felt a little strange, given you just met the girl a couple of hours ago, but you felt honoured nonetheless. United played against Liverpool. It was a though game, but they fought through. Ona was amazing. You didn’t know much about football, apart from what your dad used to scream at the TV, but it was very clear that she had a key role in the game and you pitied anyone who had to go head to head with her.
After the final whistle blew you watched as the players walked around the field, waving at and thanking the fans. They ended up at the friends and family section, but you politely remained in your seat, not wanting to bother Ona and giving her some time with her friends. Ona, however, upon arriving at the section, looked rather disappointed, scanning the stands with her eyes. When she finally spotted you, a large smile appeared on her face as she waved at you to come over.
“Thank you for coming, I hope you enjoyed it” she said. “Thank you for inviting me” you answered. “Soo, was I any good?” she asked, smirk on her face. “I guess you were all right” you joked. The two of you briefly chatted about the game before she got pulled away by some teammates. “Go have fun” you said, sending her a wink. “I’ll be quick, just a shower and then I’ll meet you out back?” She gave you a quick hug before heading towards the dressing rooms.
You sat in the lounge area for a bit and Ona texted you some details about where you could meet later. You felt a little guilty about taking her away from the team celebrations, so you texted back:
You: Hey, it’s okay if you want to go celebrate with your teammates, you don’t have to hang out with me you know…
Ona: No, I want to. I promised you Manchester by night!
Ona: Besides, you’re way more fun than these morons anyways ;)
You: Okay, see you there :)
You were leaning against the gate post whilst looking at the January sun already starting to set, when you were startled by a the sudden feeling of a hand on your shoulder. “I love watching the sun set and rise, always reminds me of the Lion King. I love the Lion King.” You turned around to see a familiar pair of hazel eyes looking at you expectantly. “Sorry for making you wait. I got you something though”. Ona handed you a paper bag with something bright red in it. “I still owed you a sweater, remember?” She smiled. You opened the bag further to find a hoodie with a big Manchester United logo on it. You turned it around to see the number 2 printed on the back. “That’s my number!” She said excitedly. “I know, I just saw you play in it, remember? Thank you, Ona. You really didn’t have to, but it’s really nice to have something to remember you by.” Both your cheeks flushed slightly at that comment.
Ona quickly ordered a cab to get you two back to the city centre. She clearly had a plan in mind for the evening as she guided you through Manchester. She briefly stopped at certain sights to tell you some fun fact or story. “Are you hungry?” She asked after walking around for about two hours. “I could eat.” You answered. “Good, I know the perfect place.” She replied confidently. She took you to a small restaurant by the river. “You like Spanish food?” Ona asked. “¡Sí, me gusta la comida española!” You answered in your best Spanish accent, making Ona giggle.
You sat down at a table for two by the window. “Hola Ona, nice to see you again” the waiter spoke, handing you both your menus. “Are the other girls not coming today?” “Hola Mateo. No, just us.” “Claro” Mateo the waiter noticed you trying desperately to figure out the Spanish menu, looking rather confused and chuckled lightly. He turned back to Ona: “¿Es una cena romántica, o solo amigas?” Ona quickly glanced at you to check if you understood any of that, but you kept your eyes glued to the menu, wanting to hear her answer. “No lo sé todavía. Espero que sí.” You quickly looked at Ona to see a blush appear on her cheeks, but you moved your eyes back to your menu before she could catch you. “Claro,” he smiled. “buena suerte con esa, Ona” He now turned back to you “Would you like an English menu?” “Yes, please” He quickly handed you one from the bar before sending Ona a final wink and moving to another table.
“What was that about?” You asked Ona with a small grin on your face. “Nothing, just joking around.” It was now her turn to practically stick her head into the menu even though she knew it by heart, just to avoid eye contact. “Any recommendations?” You quickly changed the subject to slightly ease the tension. “Sí, do you like lobster?”
You both ordered a dish called Arròs caldós amb llamàntol and some white wine to pair with it. It was a Catalan dish with creamy rice and lobster. Ona explained how it was one of her favourite things to eat back home, and how she often came to this restaurant to enjoy the familiarity and how it made her feel at peace. You couldn’t help but stare at the twinkle that appeared in her eyes as she spoke about her home. Even though you were quite full from the lobster, Ona insisted you’d try her favourite dessert, so you ended up sharing one Crema Catalana which, as the name suggested, was also a Catalan dish. After a bit of debate you convinced Ona to split the bill, as the lobster was quite expensive and she had already given you enough today.
You left the restaurant two hours later, very full and a little tipsy. Ona suggested to walk along the river for a bit, which you happily accepted. The conversation fell quiet as you looked up at the semi-clear night sky. There were some clouds here and there, and the many city lights caused some light pollution, but you could still see the stars fairly clearly. You almost walked into a fence as you were looking up, lost in thought. “Woah, careful there” Ona giggled. “I guess stargazing works better laying down on the ground” you replied. You proceeded the walk, now looking at your feet rather than at the sky, when Ona suddenly pulled you to the side. She guided you towards a patch of grass. “We can lay down here, if you want?” You just smiled as you lay yourself down on the cold grass, Ona following your lead as she plopped down next to you.
“I don’t really know anything about stars, do you?” She admitted. “See that W right there?” You pointed upwards. When you got no reaction you scooted a little closer so you could point from her point of view. “Ah yes, I see it now.” She exclaimed. “That’s Cassiopeia, the vain queen. The greek mythology says she was placed in the sky by Poseidon as punishment for her vanity. Essentially he said she was to full of herself.” You chuckled. “I’m sorry, I must be boring you with this random information” You apologised. “No, no, please tell me more!” You felt her hand lightly brushing yours as you carried on telling her random facts about the stars and constellations. After a while you ran out of information and you fell silent. “Ona,” you spoke, taking a deep breath “mi español no es bueno. Pero entiendo un poco lo que dices.” You tried in your best Spanish, not knowing how to use the past tense yet. Ona suddenly shot up. “I KNEW IT” she yelled “you did understand! Why didn’t you say something” You sat up as well. “I was curious to hear your answer.” You smiled slyly. Ona playfully shoved your shoulder. “Well I’m curious to hear your answer as well.” She boldly stated. You felt your stomach drop at the question but tried to remain cool on the outside. You swallowed and leaned in slightly. Your faces were now only a few inches apart. You looked at her lips but waited for her to respond first. Ona leaned in further, almost completely closing the space between the two of you when you suddenly heard a voice from behind you. “Go on then, kiss, ladies! I don’t mind seeing that at all. Hot!” You turned around to see a group of adult men making kissy faces at you from a distance. “Come on let’s go” you both got up quickly and you let out a relieved sigh when the men didn’t follow you.
“I’m sorry that just happened.” Ona spoke when you had returned to a busier, safer street. “Me too, I feel gross” “Yeah, I get it. It’s okay if you want to go back to your hotel or something if you feel safer there.” She asked carefully. “Maybe, but erm,” you started, not knowing how to not come on too strong in finishing your sentence “I might feel even safer if you join me?” You paused for a second. “I mean, we don’t have to do anything, we can just chill and watch a movie or something or - never mind forget it I’m sorry for even sug-” “Hey, hey,” she took a hold of your face to stop you from rambling “don’t worry, I would love that.”
It wasn’t common for you to stay in a hotel, given that you mostly preferred hostels or, if you were feeling fancy, the occasional airbnb. However, Amy, who lived a more decadent lifestyle, had insisted on booking a hotel for the two of you, stating she’d “rather sleep on the street than enter one of those bed bug infested hell holes you call a hostel”. So here you were, unlocking the door to your two person suite, paid for by Amy, with a girl on your arm who definitely was not Amy. Ona audibly gasped when you opened the door. “Woah, I didn’t take you for the luxurious type, Y/N. And here I was worrying about your sweater.” You chuckled at her reaction, before explaining the whole Amy situation.
“Terrible friend, if you ask me. Good thing you met me.” She winked. “Yeah, well, we got each other through so much. I will always forgive her.” You replied. “Still though, she shouldn’t have ditched you like that” “Yeah well, at least she’s still paying for the room” Ona’s expression suddenly changed. “Soo they have her credit card information, no?” She looked at the minibar, then back at you, then at the minibar again as a mischievous grin appeared on her face. You hesitated. “Oh come on, she deserves a little payback” You finally gave in and the two of you grabbed a few way overpriced beers and snacks. “Wanna watch a movie?”
You settled on the couch with your snacks and beers and without asking you turned on the Lion King. Ona’s eyes lit up at opening shot of the sunrise. She turned to face you. “You remembered” she whispered, a smile appearing on her face. “Of course I did, you told me just a few hours ago” you jokingly replied. Ona didn’t laugh, and when you looked at her you saw her eyes were still fixated on you. You stared into each others eyes for a bit when you noticed her eyes glancing down at your lips for just a second. You gathered as much courage as you could as you decided it was your turn to be bold. “I also remember something else that erm, you know, almost happened.” You leaned in slightly, very proud of your smoothness but also nervous as you weren’t sure she understood what you were hinting at. Ona moved closer to you and leaned in as well, gaze alternating between your eyes and lips, anxiously waiting for you to make the first move. Noticing this, you knew you could finally take away the mere inch that was left in between both your lips, which you did, very slowly. Your lips landed on hers as gently as humanly possible, and the world around you disappeared for a second. You slowly came back when you felt a hand on your cheek. Ona pulled herself closer to you, which encouraged you to deepen the kiss. Her hand had now moved to the back of your neck, rubbing your jaw with her thumb. The kiss soon turned into a rather heated make-out, which continued for a while. By the time you pulled away, circle of life had just ended in the background. “Sorry we missed the best song” you chuckled. Ona opened up her arms. You accepted the invite and cuddled up against her.
You watched the movie in silence for a while, although you didn’t process much of what was happening on the screen, too distracted by what had just happened and by the hand lightly stroking your forearm the whole time. You held it together until halfway through Hakuna Matata, when Onas hand slowly moved to your inner thigh and the tension became too much. You turned your head towards her rather abruptly, accidentally startling her and she quickly pulled her hand away entirely. “I’m sorry, too much?” Her eyes widened, concern apparent in her face. “No, no, don’t worry, I like it. I just erm,” you paused, contemplating what to say next “I’m not really watching the movie anymore, you know?” You finally admitted. “Oh, we can watch something else if you want?” Ona replied quickly. You looked at her with a slightly raised an eyebrow, waiting for her to realise what you meant. “What? Oh. Ooooh” she really dragged out the o’s in that last one. “Well erm, is it a good distraction at least?” “Yes, definitely” you answered a little too quickly. “Want to get distracted some more? You could, you know, distract me back, if you want?” She said, with a slight smirk. She didn’t need to ask you that twice as you got up and pulled her towards your queen-sized hotel bed.
About 8 hours later, a soft thud woke you up from the coma you had been in, followed by what you could only assume was a series of Spanish swearwords. You slowly opened your eyes to find Ona wrapped up in a blanked, grabbing her toe with one hand whilst rummaging between the clothes scattered around the hotel floor with the other one. You realised she must be trying to sneak out without waking you, so you decided to turn around and pretend to still be asleep. This movement, however, did not go unnoticed as Ona suddenly stopped in her tracks. “Shit, did I wake you?” She whispered. You turned back around to face her. “Good morning, Ona. It’s okay if you want to sneak out you know, no hard feel-” “No, no, it’s not like that.” She interrupted “I just have training in a bit. And you were sleeping so soundly, I didn’t want to wake you.” She smiled. “Well in that case, don’t you need breakfast first?” You asked. “I was just going to get something on the way there actually, got any better ideas?” She replied “How about some roomservice, it’s on me! Well, actually it’s on Amy.” You winked. “Great plan!”
After filling up on the luxurious hotel breakfast, Ona put on her sneakers and coat and you walked her to the door as you started to feel a little sad about her leaving. Before she opened the door she turned around to look at you. “I had a really nice time, Y/N.” She said, smiling softly. “Me too, I’m glad I met you.” You replied. You stood there for a while, staring into each others eyes. “See you again, I hope.” She eventually said. “Yeah, me too” You said, and she turned around to open the door. You watched as she walked away down the hallway, finally closing the door when she turned a corner.
You plopped down on the bed and let out a deep sigh. Many thoughts and feelings were coursing through you stomach and brain as you gazed at the ceiling. On the one hand there was excitement, about what had happened the day before. Meeting this amazing girl and having an amazing time with her. Then there was confidence, because for some reason this amazing girl seemed to take a liking to you. But then on the other hand there was this nervousness creeping up inside you, about the “What now?”, the uncertainty of it all. And to top it all off there was sadness, knowing you were only there for a couple more days before having to return home, to your stupid job.
But for now you tried to focus on the positive parts. Thinking about the day (and especially the evening) before brought a smile to your face and, even though you didn’t want to admit it, butterflies to your stomach. “Damn Y/N, what have you gotten yourself into this time” You said to yourself as you smacked a pillow into your own head. You shot straight up as you realised it: you just pulled an Amy.

The Flat Next Door
Fun to write and thank you for the ask! i swear to God I feel this gif somewhere deep inside of me!
Warnings: a bit of touchy feely, mentions of divorce, not proofread and fuelled by lingering red wine and exhaustion!
Jim was fresh out of his divorce. He had lost his kids in a custody battle after getting into a fight with their step dad, along with the majority of his savings, his new girlfriend left him as soon as he wanted to get serious and he really was completely alone in the world. Bearing all of this in mind he moved across the Irish Sea and took up a new job in Liverpool. The pay wasn’t the best but he wasn’t responsible for anyone apart from himself now and the city itself made up for it. It did mean though, that aged 42, he was having to live in an absolute dive in a block of apartments he never though he would have to see the likes of again until now. The kinds of people living here were the ones that you didn’t want to bump into on a dark night or had just decided to give up on life and slowly rot into the decaying depths of society. He was pretty sure that the apartment to his left was being used as a weed farm from the smell and the weird times that people were walking in and out. The flat to his right was a bit different though, it belonged to a girl who simply didn’t fit in among this band of junkies and lowlifes. She couldn’t have been much older than 22 and always kept herself to herself. Everyday she would come home at around the same time, make dinner, work for a bit and fall asleep with the tv on in the background. It was hard not to notice these things with how thin the walls were. Who was she though? That was something he was curious to find out.
~
It was three months after you had moved into your apartment that the absolute unthinkable happened. Somebody had broken into your flat, not that you should have been surprised. The door had been kicked clean off the hinges and nobody had even thought anything of it. The place missing a door though meant that it was hardly safe to stay here and fixing it was not a job that you could do yourself. This was how you had come to meet Jim, the helpful man from the apartment next door who had spotted your distress and come over with a toolbox to help you fix it. You had invited him in for coffee and the pair of you had fallen asleep on the sofa, not that it meant anything of course, you were scared so he had stayed incase the burglars had made a return visit.
After that you had started meeting up for coffee periodically. He learnt that you were a student, having ended up here after fleeing from the house you had been sharing after discovering that your boyfriend was cheating on you with one of your housemates. Though you were at very different points in your lives there was some sense of empathy between the two of you. Perhaps a friendship based on a mutual sense of abandonment wasn’t the healthiest thing in the world, but it was certainly what you were both craving around this time.
The other thing that Jim learnt about you was that you were a very tactile person. Whenever you walked past him in the kitchen whilst making a cup of coffee you would place a hand on his shoulder, as if to move him out of your way. If you were sat together on his shitty little sofa and he made a joke you would always place a hand on his thigh or his forearm, as if to keep you grounded as you laughed.
As of late he was starting to wonder whether there was more to these touches than he had originally thought. It was moments like these, when you watching television together with him sat at one end of the sofa with your feet in his lap, that he questioned what you really wanted out of him. He was caught off guard by you moving your feet in his lap.
“You know Jim, I’ve put them there for a reason. I missed the bus and my feet are killing me and I was hoping I might get a foot massage out of you?” You chuckled.
“You poor thing, I can’t promise I’ll be much good but I can certainly try.”
“You’re an angel, I promise I’ll make it up to you in time.” What the hell is that meant to mean?
~
Three weeks later and he still didn’t know what that comment had meant. Rents had been put up and he, remembering the financial struggles of being a student, had starting offering to cook for you more often. He wanted to make sure that you were eating something other than pot-noodles or HP Sauce on toast. You’d started helping him cook as well, if he was honest the evenings were when he missed his kids the most, so the little arrangement worked out well in his favour. You were coming back from one of the cupboards with a tin of tomatoes, he was expecting your hand to find his shoulder, but it didn’t stay there like it normally did, instead trailing down his back until it came to briefly rest on his ass. Caught unawares he automatically reached for your arm, holding it in a gentle grip.
“Y/n, what are you doing?”
“You remember how a while ago you gave me that massage?”
“Yes.”
“And I said I’d make up for it in time?”
“Yes.”
“How would you feel about cashing in on that now…”

Joker Out, who rose to popularity from the Eurovision Song Contest, starts off their European tour in Finland. A unique friendship was also born during the contest with Käärijä

A gold record from Finland, fans camped outside the venues from the early hours of the morning, the new song Everybody's Waiting streaming at a fast pace. Slovenian indie rock band Joker Out are going strong. The band, who emerged from last year's Eurovision Song Contest, have been super-popular in their home country for a long time, but it was the Eurovision Song Contest that blew them up.
The European tour, which kicks off at the House of Culture this weekend, will run well into April. The band, who won a gold record in Finland for their Eurovision song, Carpe Diem, will be coming to Helsinki for the second time.
"We feel at home in Finland, and last time it was very cosy for us. Finns and Slovenians have a lot in common", says singer Bojan Cvjetićanin in a remote interview.
Liverpool's Eurovision Song Contest not only left them with Europe-wide popularity, but also something else unique - a friendship with Jere Pöyhönen, aka Käärijä.
"Buddies for life. In all the Eurovision hype and chaos, we managed to find a very close friendship, and that is something truly unique", says Bojan.
After the weekend in Helsinki, the tour continues to Tallinn, Estonia. Käärijä will jump on board.
"Jere will be joining us as tourists because he has some time off. We are definitely going to spend a lot of time together during those days", Bojan says.
"Hopefully I'll get to the sauna in Finland too! I'm really looking forward to the gigs, and as Jere says, it's crazy, it's party."
See embed video on the original article: watch Joker Out reminisce about their experiences in Finland and Bojan imitating Käärijä.
Joker Out was seen at this year's UMK as Slovenia's point presenter, and the Nokia Arena went wild as Bojan, bassist Nace Jordan and drummer Jure Maček took the screen to present the points - Bojan wearing a green Käärijä shirt.
How did it feel to make an arena full of Finns scream remotely?
"We just hoped that our internet connection would last", drummer Jure laughs.
The Nokia Arena was a special place for us, as the last time we saw the arena was when we drove past it during our gig in Tampere. Jere joked that, one day we'll make this arena, Bojan imitates his friend's rally English.
So maybe a joint tour?
"Maybe we do, maybe we do, we’re gonna plan it now..." Bojan grins.
What is Joker Out?

Liverpool, February 1963. Photo by Michael Ward/Iconic Images, © Iconic Images. “Each Beatle differs so much from the other Beatles that it’s odd they get on so well together. They like each other best. ‘We are our friends,’ says George. ‘Friends, buddies, and pals,’ says John. They derive strength from being collective. (There was a fifth Beatle, Stuart Sutcliffe, a good artist who bought a guitar from the sale of his first picture and died in Germany from a brain tumor at the age of 21.) They are bound together by their hair, their music and their jokes.” - Maureen Cleave, Evening Standard, October 19, 1963 “The Beatles were a little unit on their own. We grew up together, we played all our apprenticeship together in Liverpool and Germany. We completely understood each other.” - George Harrison, Rolling Stone, October 22, 1987 “[When visiting Liverpool] I just look at all the places and say, ‘there’s where I was born, there’s where I lived, there’s where I went to school, there’s where the Cavern got knocked down.’ My friends were really John, Paul and Ringo and we all moved at the same time. I do miss Liverpool.” - George Harrison, 1992 interview; CNN, 2001 (x)

inspired by the manchester anon haha but do you have any tips and suggestions for visiting leeds? 🩷
I've lived here for 2 years now (!!!) but somehow I still don't really know my way around and just go to the same 5 places and use google maps to get anywhere else. it's sad. but here's some shit I love:
Grindhouse - cheap drinks, loads and loads of seats, never too full, music a reasonable volume, and they project 80s movies on the back wall. we once sat in here for 2 hours cos Stand By Me was on. one time we watched the bar staff earnestly tell a group of women on a hen do that the bar was closed and they weren't serving any more drinks, at 7:45pm. 10/10.
Rudy's - only 9 cities* in this fair nation have a Rudy's, so I'm going to keep reccing it for everyone else. perfect Neapolitan pizza. *Leeds, Manchester, Sheffield, Birmingham, Nottingham, Durham, London, York, Liverpool - if you live in one of these places and haven't been to Rudy's yet, sort it out.
Neon Cactus - go here on a Wednesday and order wings, and you'll get half price margs. lots of great Mexican scran. don't take anyone too picky or over 50, because the price for the great food and vibes is that at least one thing you order will be incorrect. but roll with it. half price margs, man.
Empire Cafe - book in advance if you want to sample the delights of Empire Cafe, cos there's like 6 tables max. everything is seasonal, changes on the daily, and is insanely delicious. if you want to experience heaven, order the steak and chips with salsa verde. there is NOTHING like it.
Stuzzi - another seasonal, small plate sort of place, but Italian. amazing food and a gorgeous restaurant. go with a big group and order one of everything.
Eat Your Greens - ANOTHER seasonal restaurant! this one is farm-to-fork and organic. I can’t speak to the quality as I haven’t actually been, but I am a frequenter of their GREENGROCER, which is MEGA. last time I think I left with natty wine, pâté, some insane tinned fish, a jar of harissa and a bag of sunset potatoes. if you like food, go here.
SARTO - fresh, handmade pasta and picky bits. another great place to go with a group and order all the starters. I had a celeriac pasta there last year that I think about on a fairly regular basis; I picked it cos it was the weirdest sounding thing on the menu and it was fucking mouthwatering. good quality and good people! and it's next door to The Wardrobe, so perfect for a pre-gig tea.
Santiago Bar - like Grindhouse (alternative, casual) but the music is louder and you'll find yourself doing tequila shots at 1am and screaming along to, like, Don Broco. it's the best.
Blue Collar Boys - as a rule I hate 'vintage' clothes shops (overpriced, ugly, everything is XXS), but this place seems to specialise solely in American t-shirts and sweatshirts from the 90s in exactly my size, and everything is £10. this is amazing and a huge bargain if you find something like vintage Wranglers and a Playboy bomber jacket (£20, my wife) but not so amazing or a bargain if you find 3 t-shirts with holes in (£30, me). we've never been without finding shit we love. they only open on random weekends, and they always seem to have more stuff than they could possibly ever sell. it's a freaky vintage alternate universe.
The Corn Exchange - a big gorgeous ol' building full of little businesses. vintage, handmade, tattoos, coffee, jewellery, independent brands, yarn, shoes, a barbers, a bookshop, they've got it all. very easy to spend £100 and 6 hours. every so often they have a market on the bottom floor. perfect tiny representation of Leeds: quirky, independent, delicious, cool.
Silver's Deli - this is a 9-minute train ride away in Bramley (my ends!) but has become THEE buzzy foodie spot recently. go on a sunny saturday morning (cos you will probably have to sit outside) and order the everything sandwich. thank me later. if they have scotch eggs or sausage rolls on, I beseech you, order both. and if you want the sunday special prepare to get there at 11 and fight.
Against the Grain - if you've come to Bramley for Silver's, you may as well trundle 10 minutes up the road and visit the best bar in Leeds. cosy, casual, full of locals, hidden in Swinnow Mills. it's a sit-around-and-chat-to-people sort of place, with bonus charcuterie boards AND a pizza van on weekends. we are here A LOT, because Gray's Salon and Rose and Thorn Tattoo are both in the Mill, and we give them all our money. oh! and dog friendly. sooo many dogs.
Project House/Galleria - if you've gotten the train out to Bramley for Silver's and ATG, jump on the 72 back to town and get off at Project House to eat MORE food. Galleria is a great place to get breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and Project House has EVERYTHING (depending on the day). yoga! gigs! vintage fairs! a bi-annual tattoo convention meets makers market with food vendors called Hand of Glory! check what's on and head on down to support local!
Kirkstall Bridge Inn - another one local(ish) to me, but worth travelling out of town for; a PROPER pub (i.e. no tv, no sports, no shite) that does roasts upstairs and lets dogs in downstairs. outdoor seating right by the canal, and every so often they put something on and the car park turns into a tiny festival. Kirkstallpalooza is a highlight. great place to finish a nice canal walk (who am I?!).
tl;dr sorry that this is obnoxiously long, I love Leeds

Haunted
SoapGhost fic
___
Soap and Ghost never become intimate while in 141. Both didn’t want to cross the line. And a part of them believed the other didn’t feel the same way. Years go by with them remaining close friends. But something happens and Ghost disappears one day. Just gone within a night.
It sent Soap in a panic so he went to Price. The man assured him that Ghost was alive, and that’s all he would tell him. Price couldn’t tell Soap anything but Soap knew he was discharged. Just like that, his best friend and the man he loved the most is gone.
Soap continued on, raising rank to lieutenant. Ghost slowly becomes nothing more than a distant memory. A memory that hurts him every time it rears itself. Soap becomes stone cold, slowly losing himself as he fights. Finally, Price tells him it’s time. He had grown too old to keep fighting and no one else would take his place. This was the end of 141.
Soap planned on continuing to fight, but Price urged him to go home. So Soap goes home. To his aging parents, his married sisters and their grown children. They welcomed him home eagerly, but Soap felt so out of place. He forced himself to smile for their sake. His mother made his bed in his old room. The room was just as he remembered, left untouched by the years he was gone.
He tried to merge back into civilian life, but he just couldn’t. He was always standing guard, waiting for something to happen.
One evening, after dinner, Soap was doing the dishes. He felt a hand on his shoulder and he jumped and turned around. He relaxed when he saw his father, hands up to show he meant no harm.
“At ease, soldier.”
“Sorry, Pa…”
His father looks him in the eye before speaking, “Service hasn’t been kind to you.”
Soap resumes the dishes, “Hasn’t been kind to anyone.”
“Have you kept in touch with your old team?”
Ghost immediately comes to mind, Soap’s heart aching. He stops scrubbing the already clean plate, swallowing.
“Gaz- Kyle, is back home in London. Old man Price is in Liverpool. Kyle visits Price often.”
His father nods, “Could invite them over. Have a get together.”
Soap loved that idea. To seem them again, to see that they were doing well instead of just hearing about it. Ghost flickers across his mind again and Soap sighs.
“Would be nice to see them.”
“Then let’s do it. Call up your old team. They can stay a week or so.”
“Would Ma be okay with that?”
“Of course! You know your mother, she never meets a stranger.”
Soap stares out the kitchen window at the black sky. Involuntarily Ghost comes back. Soap thinks about him meeting his family, his mother taking his hand and asking if he had eaten yet. His father wrapping an arm around his shoulder, already calling him ‘son’. His sisters teasing him as he gets roped into watching the youngest of the MacTavish family. Soap sighs, looking to his father.
“I’ll call them up.”
“Good, lad.”
That night Soap laid awake at night, Ghost plaguing more than he had in years. Every thought turned back to him. All Soap could think was that he missed him so much, that he hated that Ghost left before Soap could tell him how he felt. He desperately wanted to go back, to that very night that Ghost disappeared on. Take his hands before they separated to go to bed, tell him how much he loved him.
But that won’t happen.
Soap rolls over in bed, blinking away the tears as he curls up. He forced his thoughts onto Gaz and Price, on the joy he will feel from seeing them again. Maybe he could talk about Ghost with them… he knows they don’t miss him like he does. That they weren’t plagued by him every day, every night, wishing that he could see him again.
Soap closes his eyes, hugging his pillow as sleep slowly comes to him like a skittish animal, the slightest sound or movement threatening to chase it off. Darkness overcame him after what felt like hours. Probably was hours.
Soap found himself awake in his bed suddenly. He blinked before sitting up. Was this a dream? He honestly couldn’t tell. Soap slipped out of bed and into the hall, walking carefully past his parent’s bedroom. He makes his way downstairs and into the living room, surprised to find someone sitting on the loveseat. He should be alarmed but something told him there was nothing to fear from the stranger.
He creeps closer, “Hello? Who are you?”
The man turns to him and Soap found himself frozen at Ghost’s face. It was exactly how he remembered him all those years ago. Not a bit of age on him. Soap steps forward, tears welling up.
“Simon!”
Ghost smiles sadly at him, “Good to see you, Johnny.”
Soap tried to get closer but it felt like he wasn’t getting any closer no matter how much he ran. Ghost stands and turns to him, that sad smile never leaving him.
“I’m sorry, John… I can’t stay.”
“No, please don’t go!”
Ghost seems to fizzle away, “Goodbye, Johnny.”
“Simon! SIMON!”
Soap’s eyes snap open. After a minute the tears start to pour, Soap burying his face into his pillow to muffle his sobs. He rolls onto his back, blindly reaching for his phone. When he finds it, he dials a number and holds the phone to his ear with a shaking hand. After a minute someone picks up.
“Johnny?”
“What happened to him?”
Price’s groggy voice seems to clear quickly, “John… I can’t—“
“It’s been twenty years, Price… Please… What happened to Simon?”
Price was quiet before he speaks, “He had a… episode. The higher ups decided they could no longer ignore that he was in the field. No longer pretend that it was okay. So he was discharged.”
Soap swallows, “He… why leave in the middle of the night? Why didn’t he say goodbye?”
There was a weight in Price’s voice. It was so heavy and tired, “That night is when he had the episode. They didn’t allow him to come back.”
Soap blinks away the tears, “He couldn’t say goodbye…”
“No, son. They believed that it would do more damage than good.”
“Fucking— Do you know where he went?”
“Son, that’s all I can tell you. I’m sorry but… Simon is gone. He’s been gone for twenty years.”
Soap grips his phone, “You don’t know.”
“John—“
“You don’t know what happened to him. Do you?”
Silence. It dragged on for a good bit before Price finally breathed out, “No. I don’t.”
Soap chokes, “Of course… he’s the Ghost.”
“If he wanted you- any of us- to know what happened to him, we would know already.”
Soap rolls over, feeling the dampness on his pillow from his tears, “Yea… you’re right.”
“I’m sorry I can’t give you the closure you seek, John.”
“I need to give myself closure, not get it from someone.“
“We can’t always give ourselves what we need. It’s okay to reach out when you need help.”
Soap laughs, “Always know what to say.”
“I read too many fortune cookies.”
The night dragged on. Hours passed before Price finally decided to go back to bed, telling Soap good night before hanging up. After the line clicked, Soap slowly let his phone slip from his hand. Staring at the window. Somewhere out there was Ghost. And Soap wondered if that somewhere was in his future to visit.

this is my first fic and i hope you enjoy it!
I also have to make this multiple parts, so sorry about that!
can we always be this close, forever and ever?
after four long hours from London, you had finally arrived in Manchester. You stepped off the train and headed to the arrival area to meet your friend Maddie.
You and Maddie had been best friends since primary school, but ever since you moved to London three years ago, and Maddie living in Manchester since University, you had barley seen her, although you try to make time to see each other at least once a year, however every year she had come to London. This was your first year visiting her in Manchester, and you were eager to finally see Maddie.
After walking around the pick up area for a good 10 minutes, you finally see her car. Excitement fills your body and you can't help but rush over to her with an embarrassingly huge smile. As Maddie sees you run over she gets out of her car and spreads her arms out wide.
You two meet in a hug, both not wanting to let go. It had been so long since the two of you had been together.
"MADDIE!"
"Y/N!"
"It's been forever! How are you!"
"I'm good, how are you? How was the train ride? Good?"
"Yeah, it was really good. Although the breakfast sandwich I ordered really got me through it" You said with a chuckle.
Maddie helped you with your bags and brought them to the trunk of her car. Once you both got settled in the front seat, Maddie turned the radio on and she started driving to her place.
Once you pulled into the driveway to Maddie's house, you brought your things inside, being met with barks of her little toy poodle, jasper, and the smell of apple cinnamon from a candle that was burning. It was a warm type of feel, like a warm hug.
There was a Manchester City v Liverpool game on the tv which was fitting since Maddie was a HUGE Manchester City fan. You were a Chelsea fan since living in London, but all in all, you didn't keep up with football as much as you used to when you were still in school, however when you were an avid football watcher, Manchester City was naturally your team.
"OH! Y/N! I forgot to mention, I got us tickets for a Man City v Tottenham match on Friday! Should be a good game!"
"Oh my God! Thanks Mads! I'm sure it will be"
The two of you ordered Chinese food and sat down, watching the game carefully, getting frustrated with the ref, and cheering when possession would change back to City. Just as the game was coming to an end, your food had arrived.
"ANDDDDD...... END, 2-1 CITY!! LETS GOOO!" Maddie screamed, giving you a high five.
It was like you and her were never separated.
-
You and Maddie spent the whole week going shopping, eating out, and watching movies.
"Y/n, did you bring your City jersey? Because if not we NEED to get you one to wear to the game. And, I mean, I could lend you one of mine, but why not use this as an accuse to get another. In fact, I'll just buy you one!"
You both make your way to the Manchester City fan store and you are met with an overwhelming amount of light blue everything. Surrounded by numbers and standard blank jerseys, you look around picking out one you would wear for the game.
"How about Haaland? He's the best on the team I'd argue. Or, oh my God, you need a Grealish jersey!"
Jack Grealish. Star football player. Midfielder for Manchester City and England's national team. Who didn't know who Jack Grealish was.
The funny thing was that he was an old classmate of Maddie and Y/n, from primary school all the way to high school.
"Very funny Mads."
"No, I'm being serious. It's not every day that your best friend, after me of course, from school becomes a professional footballer who is loved across the nation and plays for one of the best teams in England! You need his Jersey Y/n, you two used to be so close!"
You fool your eyes. It's true, the two of you were close, but you live very different lives now and it's not like you are still friends with him.
"I'll just get the Haaland jersey Mads."
"If you say so."
-
"NEXT!"
You and Maddie step up to check into the match, excitement flooding your body. The energy at matches were always so electric.
As you were walking towards your seats, you realize that you keep walking, getting really close to the pitch.
"here." Maddie says. You are one row from the pitch, sitting on the end of the second row.
"Maddie, what the fuck."
"What?" she says cheekily.
"These seats are insane, I mean really fucking insane"
"Only the best for the best"
You hug her and take a seat.
Before you know it kick off is happening and the game starts. The stadium is rumbling from cheers of mainly Man City fans, and the energy is something that is like a drug. You catch a sort of high from the pure adrenaline.
The game stops for half-time and you are excited to see the players walk by as your seats are right near the tunnel to the locker rooms.
As the players walk by you are met with a familiar face.
It is none other than Mr. Jack Grealish. You make eye contact with him as he walks by. You don't think anything of it, until he does a double take and smiles widely. But that was just a friendly smile, right?
-
Was that? Can't be... Unless.. No, she lives in London... But it looked just like her...
"GREALISH! ARE YOU LISTENING BOY?! WE ARE DOWN ONE-NIL, FOCUS UP DAMMIT" Pep yells.
Pep finishes giving his speech, which was honestly more like screaming at the squad until they feel threatened enough to make a difference in their game, and Jack is eager to get back on the pitch, especially seeing a girl that looked a little too similar too his childhood best friend.
The boys run back onto the pitch, and Jack makes a point to look closely at the girl. Although she was preoccupied at admiring Tottenham's Son who was already on the field, Jack could tell that the girl was definitely his old friend, however he noticed that she had a sparkle to her, something he had never noticed before, or something she gained while in London. Whatever it was about her, Jack could tell that she was still the same. Same best friend, same hair, same style, and even the same winter coat. It was intriguing.
-
The final whistle blew, indicating the match was over. Cheer erupted in Etihad Stadium. Both you and Maddie snuggling together as you clapped and cheered.
Just as the two of you were about to leave you heard you name being called.
"Y/n! Y/l/n!"
You looked around to see Jack Grealish coming over to you. The surrounding fans tried getting the Midfielders attention, but he was only concerned with you.
"Hey, Y/n! It's Jack!"
You smiled at his recognition of you.
"I know. How are you Mr. Grealish? Great game today!"
He smile warmly at your slight teasing tone. You felt like you were talking to a close friend of yours, not a Manchester City player., even though technically, it was a friend.
"How about you meet me at The Pen and Pencil after for a drink, you too Maddie."
You agreed and said your goodbyes as he ran back to his team.
"Well would you look at that. Looks to me that double trouble is back"
"Shove off Maddie" You chuckled.
-
As you pulled up to the pub your stomach starts to turn. Yes, Jack was an old friend, yes, you two were extremely close, but he also looked more mature and handsome than he ever had before and you found yourself a little attracted to him. Maybe it was because you hadn't seen him in a while, or maybe it was because he was in his football kit that fit him ever so perfectly. Regardless of attraction, you were in Manchester to have a good time with your best friend and to let loose.
"Ay, you made it" Jack said as he noticed you walking through the door. He comes over to give you and Maddie little hugs.
"Can I get you a drink, it's on me of course!
"I'll take a Cider"
The three of you catch up, sort of getting to know each other all over again. It was a natural conversation, no awkwardness or silence. It was truly like high school days again.
within the next hour, Maddie was off with some guy flirting, leaving you and Jack by the bar, still talking.
"So, how's life in London. I feel like that should have been the first this I asked, but y'know, I got sidetracked with other topic of conversation."
"No, it's alright. And, I love it. I've been there for about three years now. Don't get me wrong, I really miss Birmingham, but there is just something about London that I am so drawn to, and I have never looked back since moving. I just feel at home there, y'know?"
"Yeah I feel the same way here in Manchester"
-
It was nearing 2 in the morning and you were getting tired, especially since you and Maddie had stayed up late the night before.
"I think I'm gonna find Maddie, I'm getting pretty tired."
"Alright then, I see you on your way out?"
You nodded and headed to find Maddie.
After searching for a solid 15 minutes you couldn't find her. It was a relatively small pub, but trying to find someone in a dark crowded pub was not the easiest. You soon came to the conclusion that Maddie wasn't here. You open your phone to see a text from her.
Maddie: Hey girl! So I met this cute guy and we are going out to this other pub. I was trying to give you the car keys so you could drive since I know you were only having one drink, but I couldn't find you. Anyways, I'll pay you back for a cab since I know you'll need one. The garage code is 1234. Sorry, luv u
crap.
"Find her?"
"She actually left.."
"Oh damn. You need a ride? I was thinking of leaving anyways, I could just drive you."
"You sure? I can always get a cab or an uber."
"No need to waste money, I can drive you, I only had one drink so I'll be fine."
Jack closed his tab and you both left the pub, getting into his car which was parked out front.
-
You were fighting the urge to fall asleep in the car, but your tiredness took over, and before you knew it you were at Maddies place, and Jack was waking you up.
"Hey, Y/n. We're here." He says as he nudges you awake.
"Oh, God, sorry, I didn't mean to fall asleep"
You get out of the car and straighten out your clothes before shutting the car door.
"Thanks Jack. I really appreciate it."
"Anytime. Before I leave though, how long are you staying in Manchester?"
"Um, I think a week more? Why"
"Here, give me your number, I want to hang out with you again before you go back to London."
You exchange numbers and Jack get back in his car to leave. He rolls the window down and gives you a wink before driving off.
-
You had just gotten changed and grabbed a granola bar and were just about to turn your light off to go to bed when your phone dings.
(0161)111-1111: Hey, it's Jack. You busy tomorrow afternoon? Was thinking we could go to this one local restaurant that is the BEST. What do you think?
