LETTERS FROM AN AMERICAN
June 7, 2024
HEATHER COX RICHARDSON
JUN 08, 2024
Two big stories today that together reveal a broader landscape.
The first is that the Bureau of Labor Statistics today released another blockbuster jobs report. The country added 272,000 jobs in May, far higher than the 180,000 jobs economists predicted. A widespread range of sectors added new jobs, including health care, government, leisure and hospitality, and professional, scientific, and technical services. Wages are also up. Over the past year, average hourly earnings have grown 4.1%, higher than the rate of inflation, which was 3.4% over the same period.
The unemployment rate ticked up from 3.9% to 4%. This is not a significant change, but it does break the 27-month streak of unemployment below that number.
The second big story is that Justice Clarence Thomas amended a financial filing from 2019, acknowledging that he should have reported two free vacations he accepted from Texas billionaire Harlan Crow. While in the past he said he did not need to disclose such gifts, in today’s filing he claimed he had “inadvertently omitted” the trips on earlier reports. ProPublica broke the story of these and other gifts from Crow, including several more trips than Thomas has so far acknowledged.
Fix The Court, a nonprofit advocacy group that seeks to reform the federal courts, estimates that Thomas has accepted more than $4 million in gifts over the last 20 years. As economic analyst Steven Rattner pointed out, that’s 5.6 times more than the other 16 justices on the court in those years combined.
These two news items illustrate a larger story about the United States in this moment.
The Biden administration has quite deliberately overturned the supply-side economics that came into ascendancy in 1981 when President Ronald Reagan took office and that remained dominant until 2021, when Biden entered the White House. Adherents of that ideology rejected the idea that the government should invest in the “demand side” of the economy—workers and other ordinary Americans—to develop the economy, as it had done since 1933.
Instead, they maintained that the best way to nurture the economy was to support the “supply side”: those at the top. Cutting business regulations and slashing taxes would create prosperity, they said, by concentrating wealth in the hands of individuals who would invest in the economy more efficiently than they could if the government interfered in their choices. That smart investment would dramatically expand the economy, supporters argued, and everyone would do better.
But supply-side economics never produced the results its supporters promised. What it did do was move money out of the hands of ordinary Americans into the hands of the very wealthy. Economists estimate that between 1981 and 2021, more than $50 trillion dollars moved from the bottom 90% of Americans to the top 1%.
In order to keep that system in place, Republicans worked to make it extraordinarily difficult for Congress to pass laws making the government do anything, even when the vast majority of Americans wanted it to. With the rise of Senator Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to the position of Senate majority leader in 2007, they weaponized the filibuster so any measure that went against their policies would need 60 votes in order to get through the Senate, and in 2010 they worked to take over state legislatures so that they could gerrymander state congressional districts so severely that Republicans would hold far more seats than they had earned from voters.
With Congress increasingly neutered, the power to make law shifted to the courts, which Republicans since the Reagan administration had been packing with appointees who adhered to their small-government principles.
Clarence Thomas was a key vote on the Supreme Court. But as ProPublica reported in December 2023, Thomas complained in 2000 to a Republican member of Congress about the low salaries of Supreme Court justices (equivalent to about $300,000 today) and suggested he might resign. The congressman and his friends were desperate to keep Thomas, with his staunchly Republican vote, on the court. In the years after 2000, friends and acquaintances provided Thomas with a steady stream of gifts that supplemented his income, and he stayed in his seat.
But what amounts to bribes has compromised the court. After the news broke that Thomas has now disclosed some of the trips Crow gave him, conservative lawyer George Conway wrote: “It’s long past time for there to be a comprehensive criminal investigation, and congressional investigation, of Justice Thomas and his finances and his taxes. What he has taken, and what he has failed to disclose, is beyond belief, and has been so for quite some time.” A bit less formally, over a chart of the monetary value of the gifts Thomas has accepted, Conway added: “I mean. This. Is. Just. Nuts.”
As the Republican system comes under increasing scrutiny, Biden’s renewal of traditional economic policies is showing those policies to be more successful than the Republicans’ system ever was. If Americans turn against the Republican formula of slashing taxes and deregulating business, those at the top of the economy stand to lose both wealth and control of the nation’s economic system.
Trump has promised more tax cuts and deregulation if he is reelected, although the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office recently projected that his plan to extend the 2017 tax cuts that are set to expire in 2025 will add more than $3 trillion to the deficit over the next decade. In April, at a meeting with 20 oil executives, Trump promised to cut regulations on the fossil fuel industry in exchange for $1 billion in donations, assuring them that the tax breaks he would give them once he was in office would pay for the donation many times over (indeed, an analysis quoted in The Guardian showed his proposed tax cuts would save them $110 billion). On May 23, he joined fossil fuel executives for a fundraiser in Houston.
In the same weeks, Biden’s policies have emphasized using the government to help ordinary people rather than to move wealth upward.
On May 31 the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced that it will make its experimental free electronic filing system permanent. It asked all 50 states and the District of Columbia to sign on to the program and to help taxpayers use it. The program’s pilot this year was wildly successful, with more than 140,000 people filing that way. Private tax preparers, whose industry makes billions of dollars a year, oppose the new system.
The Inflation Reduction Act provided funding for this program and for beefing up the ability of the IRS to audit the wealthiest taxpayers. As Fatima Hussein wrote for the Associated Press, Republicans cut $1.4 billion from these funds last summer and will shift an additional $20 billion from the IRS to other programs over the next two years.
Today the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued five new reports showing that thanks in part to the administration's outreach efforts about the Affordable Care Act, the rate of Black Americans without health insurance dropped from 20.9% in 2010 to 10.8% in 2022. The same rate among Latinos dropped from 32.7% to 18%. For Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders, the rate of uninsured dropped from 16.6% to 6.2%. And for American Indians and Alaska Natives, the rate dropped from 32.4% to 19.9%. More than 45 million people in total are enrolled in coverage under the Affordable Care Act.
President Biden noted the strength of today’s jobs report in a statement, adding: “I will keep fighting to lower costs for families like the ones I grew up with in Scranton.” Republicans “have a different vision,” he said, “one that puts billionaires and special interests first.” He promised: “I will never stop fighting for Scranton—not Park Avenue.”

I keep seeing people say the live action show is going to be bad only because Bryke is no longer involved. Now, I’m not particularly interested in the show because live action remakes just don’t do anything for me, personally. But I think y’all are giving Bryke way more credit than they deserve. Let’s discuss.
First, I think we should acknowledge the more problematic aspect of them creating the show in the first place. While I love Avatar, Bryke are two white men who took the aesthetics of many different Asian cultures to create their world. And most of the voice cast were also white. If there were Asian voice actors, they were either a background character or a villain (besides Iroh and Zuko, of course). Now, I know that some of you may have read that and thought about how the actor playing Sokka is not only white but lied about his ethnicity. Don’t worry, I’m mad at that as well and I’m beyond frustrated that Sokka has been whitewashed not once, but twice in the name of a live action interpretation.
And speaking of live action interpretations, let us not forget Bryke’s role in the 2010 movie. They announced their decision to leave this new show due to it not matching their vision. But they had no problem with the film that casted almost exclusively white actors to play characters of color. Again, if there were POC in the movie they were either background actors or villains (again, besides Iroh and Zuko). When people bring up the movie, they blame Shamalan for every aspect of it. Yes, he did not direct a good movie. But, at the end of the day, Bryke wanted this movie to happen. Everyone else, including Shamalan, wanted a season four but they were dead set on the live action movie that whitewashed most of the characters. And they were fine with that. That didn’t clash with their vision despite relying very heavily on non-white cultures to make their show.
Outside of the whitewashed movie, their creative choices are… interesting, to say the least. And we didn’t get to see those because the writers pulled their weight and tweaked the original concepts. Toph? Bryke wanted her to be a boy and be in a love triangle with Aang and Katara. It was the writers who made her a girl. Azula? Again, Bryke wanted her to be a boy and, again, the writers made her a girl. Katara fighting sexism in the Northern Water Tribe? They wanted her to be fighting for Aang, not herself. It was the writers decision to add in Katara fighting against a patriarchal system. Many of the episodes that people point to as their favorites (Zuko Alone, The Puppetmaster, The Southern Raiders) were not written by them. Yet, they get the pats on the backs from casual viewers and even some dedicated fans.
Do you know what happens when they do have creative control? At best, it’s mediocre, at worst, it’s bad. Let’s first take a look at their continuation of this universe by looking at Legend of Korra. The writers that made those iconic and beautiful episodes in ATLA? For the most part, they’re no where to be found. And it shows. LoK was a mess from the very beginning and never quite got its footing. Yes, I will acknowledge that Nickelodeon fucked them over. Yes, I do have respect for them for sticking to their guns and making Korrasami an item and giving us not one but two bisexual women of color. But besides that? It’s just a very mediocre show with mediocre writing.
But we see how truly bad things can get with the ATLA comics. Now, I do need to acknowledge that they didn’t work on that comic alone. So, like the movie, there are others to blame for the mess. But Bryke signed off on everything and wrote some of it themselves. And, boy, are they bad. A large number of the ATLA fandom do not like these comics and there’s definitely a reason why. Including out of character moments, prominent sexism with how the women are written, and just downright bizarre discussions, it’s not that much of a surprise that we don’t like to acknowledge it. In my opinion, no one got screwed over more in those comics than Katara. They make her a trophy girlfriend. A shadow to Aang rather than being her own character. That girl we watched in the show, the one who was vibrant, layered, complex, was gone. In her place, a hollow shell. And they would continue to show disrespect for their own character in LoK where she has been upgraded from trophy girlfriend to trophy wife. They didn’t even care enough about her, besides her being the wife of Aang and the mother of his children, to give her a statue! All the feminism we see in the original show? It definitely wasn’t Bryke.
I don’t know how this new live action show is going to pan out. It could be great, it could be bad. It could just be meh. But none of those outcomes have anything to do with whether or not Bryke was involved. Because they may have created ATLA, but they weren’t the ones who truly breathed life into it.

i wanna hear about sean/mo
OH MY GODS YES OKAY.
spoilers for whispered faith, a youtube series that has been out for far, far too long below!
so . i don't know if you're familiar with the 2000s-2010s slenderverse boom where there were just a shit ton of people creating youtube series based off of the slenderman images.
the basic idea of these series is that slenderman is hunting or haunting or just hurting the protagonists for some reason, and they are trying to defeat him or escape. sometimes slenderman just shows up briefly, sometimes he ends up being the main villain.
one of the smaller series is called whispered faith! this is where sean and mo as characters come from. whispered faith is based off the 2006 creepypasta 'the rake,' which talks about a pale humanoid creature that runs around on all fours and whispers terrible prophetic truths about the world.
some basic important stuff to know about whispered faith before i get into sean/mo specifically:
sean is the leader of a cult that worship the rake. it's unspecified in canon how long he's been part of this cult, but he is completely devoted to the rake to the point of destroying himself.
sean is ALSO the main character's childhood friend who went to high school with him. the main character, named lee, at one point goes to sean for shelter after a mysterious cult (oh hm wonder who that could be) invades his home.
mo is lee's best friend. mo spends almost the entire series being the only character with any fucking braincells and a normal moral code, which includes things like 'hey don't kill the guy. yes even if he hurt you we don't kill people.' and 'hey don't meet with the mysterious number texting you, that's not a good idea!'
sean kidnaps mo and attempts to trade with lee - items the family wants for mo back. it doesn't work - mo escapes and lee doesn't have to give up the item, but. yeah. sean also kidnaps lee, and during the time lee spends with sean and the family, sean ends up cutting off one of lee's fingers and mailing it to mo.
this series is two hours long in total and is written by college students and posted to youtube. it's not a wonderful series. it's not super well-written and they drop a lot of very important plot points and very compelling information and then do absolutely nothing with them ever again... so of course i am insane about all the ways i could make it better.
mo and sean die together in mo's basement, where sean has been held for ten months after lee and mo kidnap him.
SO. because there's so little substance to the characters in the original text - they've got basic characteristics, but most of the stuff we end up defining is all just... over-analysis of the same two hours of content.
in my mind, sean is a deeply tragic character. he's 20~ and part of a fictional cult. based on what little clues we get, sean has been in the cult for most of his life, meaning they likely picked him up as a young and vulnerable child. he's supernaturally addicted to the rake's prophetic predictions. he's so sure he's his god's chosen disciple, and then he dies in a dingy basement after staying there for ten months at the hands (claws?) of the creature he has been worshipping for most of his life. and he doesn't even get to die. because he's supernaturally connected to the rake, he ends up wandering forever in its endless realm of thin forest and empty air.
he drives me INSANE.
and so enter mo, this character who has this strong moral compass that tells him people are people, no matter what they do, and everyone - everyone - can get better. this character who has been hurt really fucking badly, has been stalked and watched and beat up and eventually killed by this cult. this character who spends the entire series focused on protecting lee as sean spends the entire series trying to hurt lee.
and i stick them together in a small space, especially post-death in the basement, and i go fucking WILD. one of my favorite spaces to explore them in is in the rake's realm, as if mo ended up there as well - i like the idea of the two of them trying to make a space together in there, sean struggling with being abandoned by the speaker and mo struggling with. well. sean.
i just think that as a pairing, as opposite characters - one who has no moral code, who has spent his life alone and intent on hurting, and one who has such a strong code, who has spent his life with lee and is shown to have several other friends throughout the series and with almost every action works to protect, they are SO fucking fun together.
anyways hahha . im normal about them. yeah. anyways.
#whisperedfaith#sean x mo#sean wf#mo wf#they dont have a ship name because nobody else gives a shit about them but i think its funny to call them man#man wf

An Overview of Cupcakes in the United States
Cupcakes were invented in 1796 by Amelia Simmons, who developed a recipe that described the treat as “a light cake to bake in small cups” in the book American Cookery. The first recorded use of the term “cupcake” can be traced back to a cookbook from Eliza Leslie published in 1928. Before the widespread use of “cupcake,” the desserts were alternatively referred to as number cakes, or 1234 cakes, because the basic recipe called for one cup of butter, two cups of sugar, three cups of flour, and four eggs, along with a cup of milk and spoonful of baking soda.
Cupcakes grew in popularity during the early 20th century, particularly after 1919, when the Hostess company began mass producing a variety of cupcakes and similar dessert food products, sometimes called snack cakes. Over the years, Hostess introduced numerous cupcake options, including orange-flavored and chocolate cupcakes.
There have been various surges in the popularity of cupcakes over time and trends within the dessert marketplace. Local New York City shops such as Magnolia Bakery gained national attention after being featured in episodes of Sex and the City in the early 2000s. Sprinkles Cupcakes opened in 2005 as the first bakery dedicated solely to cupcakes. The store has opened a second location and now produces upwards of 25,000 cupcakes each day. Crumbs, also in New York City, has reported over $23 million annual cupcake revenue.
The earliest examples of cupcakes were simple in design. Hostess mass-produced cupcakes for over a year before introducing frosting as a staple ingredient. Chocolate and vanilla frosting were standard cupcake toppings for many decades, but newer varieties include red velvet, coffee, pumpkin spice, and lemon, to name only a few.
While cupcakes have a long history in the United States, the popularity of the dessert option has hardly plateaued. Cupcake consumption throughout the US increased by 52 percent between 2010 and 2011. In 2015, 14 percent of respondents to a national survey named cupcakes their favorite dessert, just 5 percent behind cake. Less than 10 percent of respondents said they did not like cupcakes. In recent years, Americans have consumed more than 770 million cupcakes yearly.
Cupcakes are so beloved in America that they have their holiday. National Cupcake Day is observed by baking enthusiasts in the United States and a few other countries around the world on December 15. There are even sub-holidays for the dessert, such as National Chocolate Cupcake Day on October 18.
The largest cupcake ever baked belonged to GourmetGiftBaskets.com. They set the World Record in 2009 with a 1,224-pound cupcake that measured 4 feet tall and 10 feet wide. The giant cupcake contained 2 million calories. Indeed, while cupcakes are a popular tasty treat in America, it is important to remember they are a dessert item and should be consumed sparingly.
A standard cupcake provides little to no nutritional value. Unless a person is living with a specific medical condition, accepting a cupcake at a birthday party or after dinner is fine, but limiting the dessert to a single serving is best. Individuals planning a dinner or party can look for healthier cupcake recipes or mini-cupcakes.

Numbers 40-31 in this part. We're getting close to the end. Really like how this one came out.
Link to part 1. Link to part 2. Link to part 3. Link to part 4. Link to part 5. Link to part 6. Link to part 8. Link to part 9. Link to part 10.
40. Populous II
The first Populous was the start of the god game genre, but Populous II refined it into a perfect blend of god powers and stuff. It also had a “story” of you pitting your might against other Greek gods, so that was fun.
39. Deep Rock Galactic
ROCK AND STONE! A great cooperative shooter that's easy to pick up, and really fun to master. Four distinct classes make for a great team where every class is important. Hell, you can even tame the bugs and pet them, that's awesome.
38. The Stanley Parable
Honestly, I can't say anything about this game if you've never played it, because that would be spoilers, and I don't want to spoil anything about this game. It's great, though.
37. Space Quest IV: Roger Wilco and the Time Rippers
Space Quest IV was the first Space Quest game to have Gary Owens as the Narrator, and it's easily my favorite Sierra adventure game. The time travel plot makes sense, even if the future Space Quests you go to don't exist outside this game, it's just a humorously thrilling adventure featuring everyone's favorite space janitor.
36. Half-Life
Yes, it's higher than its sequel. Without Half-Life, there would be no Valve, no Steam, no Source Engine... it's that important. Some people complain it's linear, but that's the point; it's that too many took that the wrong way in making their FPS games. Gordon is being pushed that way. Also, don't play the Source port. Stick with the OG. Preferably with the HD Models turned OFF.
35. Jazz Jackrabbit 2
Take everything about the original Jazz Jackrabbit, remove the timer, make it easier to see around your character, add a second playable character with a different move set, and you get this fantastic sequel. It's honestly one of the best PC platformers out there, and you should play it.
34. Knights of the Old Republic
One of BioWare's finest RPGs. They take the Star Wars license and tell a story of the universe's past with great twists. Saying anything else might spoil it for you and I don't want to do that to you.
33. Need For Speed Hot Pursuit (2010)
Criterion's first take on the Need for Speed series is quite good. You can choose whether to be a racer or a cop, and you get a bunch of really neat cars to race or chase in. I usually have a soft spot for the Camaro, even if it's not that great in game.
32. The Incredible Machine 3
The Incredible Machine 3 is personally my favorite Incredible Machine game because it has some of the more clever puzzles, with new items such as lasers and solar panels. Now, you can't get 3 without getting the others in the series, but they're all great games.
31. Dungeon Keeper
Dungeon Keeper is a base-building game where you are the dungeon master, trying to keep all those pesky adventurers out of your lair. You must pay your minions, and you can slap them to make them work faster. Evil is good in Dungeon Keeper. Get the KeeperFX port to play it though, DOSBox has problems.
Part 8 tomorrow!

2024.
If you were to ask me how this year was, the truth is that I have to really sit down and think month-by-month to even remember what happened. There was a smattering of events, but it was overall just a really bland year. There were losses, there were a number of quick weekend trips, there were some new hobbies picked up. But overall, a relatively unmemorable year.
2024 Highlights:
Pura Vida. If a trip could go by too quickly, Costa Rica was it. We spotted sloths, macaws, and monkeys. We sampled chocolate, heart of palm, and coconut water directly from the coconut. We lounged by the beach and in hammocks and ziplined through the Monteverde forest. We tackled some whitewater rafting and jumped from a small cliffside into the river. We watched some beautiful sunsets on the western coast and I saw so many little hello's from my nana throughout our time there.
World's Largest _____. My mom joined me for my first race trip of the year, out to the Omaha/Lincoln, Nebraska area. We visited the World's Largest Ball of Stamp, World's Largest Covered Wagon, and the World's Largest Time Capsule. This trip also included the Birthplace of the Kool-Aid Man and a bizarre collection of Sasquatch memorabilia outside of someone's home.
New Hobby Alert. If I do nothing else with my year, picking up a new hobby (or expanding upon a current one) seems to be a pretty reliable way to mark the year. While I attempted macrame (not my cup of tea), revisited crochet amigurumi (certainly not my strong point in the world of fiber), and knit my first pair of socks, this year's standout skill was learning to not only bake sourdough but to do so with a started that I created from scratch.
Name Change. If anyone ever asks my opinion, I'll quickly tell them I'd recommend against changing your name when getting married unless you have a strong reason (or desire) for doing so. I finally got around to doing the name change this year and there are still lingering items where I need to have my name updated. It's not the stuff you think would be tricky (social security, DMV) - it's the small stuff (your airline miles, your housing documents, your records with your doctors). I did time it out for my passport renewal though, so at least I have a shiny new passport to put to use.
Continued House Projects. While last year was the big year of our kitchen renovation, we've continued some cleanup and fine tuning of the kitchen this year (under cabinet lights!, cleaning up grout, fixing/covering some wood filler spots on the floor). We've added more plants indoors and outdoors, hung up more frames inside, finally got a light up in the entryway, etc etc. Our hope is to tackle our master closet next year and create a better shelving and lighting setup than what we currently have in place.
Books read this year: 101
‘24 playlist (in no particular order):

Thursday, August 29th, 2024.
what is the one thing you remember most about January of last year? I remember almost nothing from January of 2023. I don't think I was in the best mental space? Like, not terrible, but not super good either? Idk. Things started to gradually improve in March, though, and by mid-year they were significantly better. As for January of 2024, I also recall relatively little. I was volunteering at the shelter, but as for specifics…I'm drawing a blank.
you look at the clock and it’s 11:11, do you wish? Yeah. I don't necessarily believe my wish will come true or that repeating numbers/number sequences have any inherent meaning, but it's a slightly superstitious habit.
how do you think you will look 3 years from now? Assuming I continue on this path of progress, I think the biggest changes will be related to body language and how I carry myself. I don't think three years will make a big difference in how old I look, and I don't plan on making any drastic style changes either.
once you graduate (if you haven’t already) are you leaving your hometown? I didn't graduate - from high school or from college. I also had no plans to leave my hometown. In fact, I'll probably reside here for the rest of my life.
what is your dream job? Working at the animal shelter.
what would be number one on your bucket list? Thru hiking either the Colorado Trail or the Appalachian Trail. I'm leaning more toward the CT, though. I just think the AT has changed too much and may no longer provide the experience I'm seeking. Another big bucket list item would be to travel to Japan.
how old do you think you’ll be when you make your will? I have no idea.
you get a text message. who do you hope it is? My mom. If I got a text from my dad right now, I'd be worried it was bad news (he'd probably just call, though). And I don't want a text from Alex because it would most likely be calling me in to the shelter and I just want to enjoy the rest of my days off.
are there any songs that you hear that just make you wanna dance? I had to look up the name of it, but I'm Good (Blue) by Bebe Rexha and David Guetta. Every time I hear it on the radio at the shelter it makes me wanna bust a move. ;D
do you get any of your songs from limewire? Is that even still a thing? I haven't done that since maybe 2010-2011.
what’s the oddest thing you are wearing right now? It's really not that odd, but I'm wearing a t-shirt that says, "Bigfoot doesn't believe in you either."
you and your best friend get in a fight. why do you think that is? I can't imagine us fighting over anything atm. I guess if anything it would be related to my very delayed text response time. I'm already a bit of a procrastinator when it comes to that form of communication, but it's gotten worse now that I'm working more. I think they would be understanding, though.
do you use the word “basically” a lot? I don't notice myself saying it a lot, but I do feel like I use it often in surveys. Same with "practically" and "pretty much."
do you use proper grammar or use IM talk? I primarily use proper grammar, but I'm not opposed to a bit of chatspeak.
what is your biggest annoyance at the time? Probably the constant nagging worry about getting a migraine at an inopportune time. I'm grateful that I've been able to keep them at bay on most workdays, but they catch up to me on my days off.
you see the person you fell hardest for. what do you do? Like just in passing? I doubt I'd do anything except feel kinda weird about it. It's one thing to have the memories, but it's another thing entirely to be unexpectedly confronted with their physical presence.
have/are you depressed? Looking back…I'd say a lot of what I experienced was "situational depression" (as opposed to a long-term chemical imbalance). I don't have much of an issue with it at this point in my life. I still have issues with my mental health, but they're nowhere near as severe as they once were.
did you grow up in the united states? Yeah.
are you dreading tomorrow? Only slightly. You know what though? I'm so glad I don't dread going to the animal shelter like I used to dread going to school. I think I feel an average amount of "ugh" when it comes to going to work.
do you call anybody ‘baby’? My own kitties and the kitties at the shelter. They're all my stinky babies.
if your school had a winter formal on new years, would you go? I can't recall whether we had winter formals or not…but if we did, then I didn't attend.
where is the fanciest place you have ever visited? That fundraising event at the Union Depot was pretty fancy. Everyone was all dressed up and I was just sorta there…in clothes I would wear to any other casual occasion. :')
who is the one person you can completely be yourself around? My dad.
are your pop-ups blocked on your computer? I don't know if they're blocked or not, but I don't get any.
do you wear earrings on a normal basis? No. My ears aren't pierced.
how old were you when you realized that life goes on? I don't know when I first came to that realization, but I do tell myself that fairly often now. This situation will end, this sadness will pass, etc.
are your parent’s night owls or morning birds? My dad is an early bird (actually, he has a pretty eccentric sleep schedule) and my mom is a night owl.
do you like to sing? I'm not really any good at it, but yeah.
are there some songs that you will never understand the lyrics to? Probably.
do you own a lot of picture frames? I don't.
who is your favorite author? One of them is Joshua Cutchin. He writes a lot of books about the paranormal. Two of my favorites would be Where The Footprints End (in partnership with Timothy Renner) and The Brimstone Deceit.
how many pillows are on your bed? Two decorative pillows, two regular pillows, and three body pillows. Okay yeah I might have a bit of a pillow problem. :')
how is your hair right now? Nice and buzzed and short.
is your phone fully charged? It's at 94%.
what’s your favorite thing about the holidays? When it comes to the "holiday season," I just love the whole vibe. The weather, the decorations, the food, the nostalgia…
are you still in school? No.
how many days/months until your next birthday? It's not until next March.
what is your favorite type of cake? Hmm…maybe carrot or red velvet.
how many rings do you wear on a day-to-day basis? I don't wear any rings on a daily basis, but I have three that I wear on occasion.
when will you next laugh until you cry? I have no idea. I can't really predict that sort of thing.

Preparing Your Child for Kindergarten
Kindergarten is the first year of formal schooling. Teachers focus on children's physical development, social and emotional development, language and literacy, and thinking (cognitive) skills.
In language arts, kindergarteners learn the alphabet and how to print letters in upper and lower case. They also begin to recognize and count numbers.
Language
The language skills children kinder bring to kindergarten predict how well they will perform in reading and math throughout school. This is why many teachers emphasize kindergarten readiness – helping children develop the basic abilities they need for learning.
Language includes speech sounds and patterns (phonetics), words and their meanings (semantics), and systems for combining parts of sentences to convey information (grammar). Research has uncovered diverse developmental trajectories in early childhood.
During the kindergarten year, your child will learn to recognize and name uppercase and lowercase letters, match letters to their sound, write simple letters and words, and use their knowledge of letter names to begin reading. They will also be able to compare sizes of objects and groups, count and understand simple addition and subtraction.
To help children feel more confident and competent, they will have the chance to use their home language during play and group activities. To support this, classrooms display family photos and everyday items from all children’s cultures in learning centers and at child’s eye level.
Math
In kindergarten, children should develop a foundation for math that includes counting to at least 20, recognizing numbers 11-19, understanding number order and basic addition and subtraction within small groups. They should also learn to identify shapes and patterns, compare objects and groups, and begin an introduction to geometry.
They also should begin to understand probability, which means how likely an event is to occur. This is an important concept that should be based on real-world experiences and can help kids make sense of things around them.
As in the language arts, teachers should emphasize hands-on activities and make learning fun to foster enthusiasm for these subjects. Kids should be encouraged to make sense of their world and become comfortable with resolving problems and persevering in the face of difficulties. Research suggests that early learning experiences, such as kindergarten number competence, set children’s developmental trajectories in elementary school mathematics (Karmiloff-Smith, 1998).
Social Studies
Social studies includes learning about people and their communities. It also includes learning about the United States and other countries, history, geography, civics and economics. Educators use the social studies curriculum to teach children about their world and how it works.
Young children's natural curiosity is best nurtured by integrating social studies with reading and other content area topics through projects, hands-on activities and classroom centers. Research suggests that integrating social studies with language arts improves student understanding of the content and enhances learning in both disciplines simultaneously (Mindes, 2010).
KinderSocialStudies provides engaging and exciting educational resources that provide students the opportunity to learn about their world and the people in it. Each unit contains a list of objectives, "I can" statements, vocabulary, activity lesson plans and all necessary student follow-up practice sheets. The lessons are designed to work within a daily routine and can be adapted for both nonwriters and writers alike. The units are divided into five themes: Rules, United States/Community Helpers, Maps, Cultures and Economics.
Science
Many kindergarten science experiences involve observing kinder, classifying and making collections of objects. These are all critical aspects of learning science that support children’s development of scientific concepts, skills and understanding.
In addition, kindergartners explore the characteristics of living things. They learn about how living things grow, adapt to their environment and have specific needs. They also discover that non-living things can be classified as well.
Teachers should balance these explorations between life and physical sciences. Some teachers shy away from the life sciences and lean toward the physical, a decision that leaves out explorations that are of great interest to children.

Deadline: April 30th, 2024 Payment: $30 CAD for features, $20 CAD for film diaries Theme: TEN + Films Note: This outlet looks more for non-fiction though does take poetry and some fiction on their topics, see details below to see if your work will count! In honour of our 10th issue, we’re getting literal and asking for submissions on film, TV, music videos, and pop culture relating to the number 10! This could look like: Cinema’s 10 Most Ineffectual Therapists, movies with “10” in the title, 10 Times I Fell Asleep in the Theatre, or movies celebrating their 10-year anniversary. At In The Mood, we don’t believe in taking ourselves too seriously, and this might be our least serious theme yet!* *But on a serious note, please read our full guidelines below before submitting 😉 This special issue will only feature 10 pieces, so send us your best! - Theme: TEN - Deadline: April 30th, 2024 - Word count for completed pieces: max 1,000 words for features, max 300 words for film diaries - Honorarium: $30 CAD for features, $20 CAD for film diaries 💡 Some ideas for inspiration: - 10-year anniversaries - Movies from 1910 or 2010 (but not ‘11s to ‘19s) - Top/Bottom 10 lists - 10 blindspots (and what you thought of them after watching) - Movies with “10” in the title (e.g. 10 Things I Hate About You, 10, 10 Items or Less, Ten Years, How To Lose A Guy in 10 Days) - What you loved watching when you were 10 - If you had 10 days left to live, what would you watch? - 10 times I ___ during a movie (e.g. cried, fell asleep, got horny, screamed) - First 10 movies you remember seeing - 10 frames from a movie - Focus on 10 of something in a movie (e.g. costumes, meals, furniture) - A celebrity/ famous character dinner party with 10 guests 👇 Please read our full guidelines before submitting: What We Publish We’re looking for writers with a distinctive voice, who aren't afraid of getting personal, and who are curious about why we watch what we watch. We appreciate thoughtful analysis but also a playful tone; we want intelligent pieces that aren't too full of themselves. We don't think of ourselves as an authority, but a confidante. 🎬 We publish the following about film, TV, pop culture, and moving image media—click for some examples we love: - Personal essays, non-academic essays - Conversations, roundtable discussions, interviews - Poetry - Round-ups, lists - Experimental pieces, fan fiction, spec scripts - Games, questionnaires - Visual art, comics - First-person, on-the-ground pieces about going to movies or working behind the scenes - Film Diaries (short personal piece about something you've watched lately) - Anniversary pieces (but try to think beyond "this movie is still great") - Works on other moving image media, e.g. music videos, celebrities, commercials, filming locations, interesting areas of the film industry ❌ Things to avoid: - Straight up reviews - Excessive summary - Academic or overly-formal tone - Flat-out pans (if something is bad, tell us why that's interesting!) - Pre-1970s media (unless from 1910 for Issue 10!) - Clickbait/hot takes Please explore our past issues and our newsletter to get a sense of what we publish! How To Submit We strongly prefer completed pieces, but we understand that writing on spec is not a realistic prospect for many writers. With that in mind, we still accept pitches. 👇 Please include: - Completed piece (doesn't need to be perfectly polished!) OR if you’re pitching: a short paragraph on the piece (topic, relevancy, intended word count - 1,000 words max for features, 300 words max for Film Diaries) - Why you think this is a good fit for In the Mood - 1-2 writing samples (they don’t need to be published) - Short bio or link to your website Send Submissions & Queries to: [email protected] What then? We aim to review our newsletter submissions within 1 week. We review all of our submissions at the end of our submission period, after which you’ll receive a response from us with our publication decision.
Please keep in mind that a rejection is not necessarily a reflection on the quality of your work! We get a large number of submissions and only have a limited number of spots per issue, which unfortunately means we have to pass on many great pitches. If your piece is accepted, it'll go through an editing process. As a volunteer-run journal, we pay a modest honorarium of $30 CAD per feature and $20 CAD for film diaries, sent upon publication. We acknowledge that this is not a market rate, and won't be doable for some writers. Thanks for pitching to In the Mood, we're looking forward to reading your work. And remember, we love surprises! 😈 Via: In The Mood Magazine.

busy pretending it's 2014.
I've been reminiscing about early 2010s aesthetics. The Tumblr girl trend peaked when I was at the impressionable age of 11, and given (mostly) unrestrictive Internet access. To be fair, my parents had zero idea of the content I would find on Tumblr.
Tumblr girls romanticized the worst things possible: drugs, alcohol, mental illnesses, substance abuse, toxic relationships, and self-harm.
As a middle schooler, I had no idea what to make of the dark side of the "Tumblr Girl". What I reminisce about is the fashion and music. I begged my mom for a pair of Vans, a skateboard (that I'd never use), and a jean jacket. Of course, I was immediately told no.
What my parents couldn't deny me was access to YouTube! I had free rein on it (scary), falling down rabbit holes. Some were not appropriate for my younger self to be watching. (I blame Shane Dawson for everything wrong in my life) However, I pride myself on finding the "good music" before anyone else my age did.
So now, this is my list of the top 5 songs popularized by the 2014 Tumblr girl trend:
#5: "Sweater Weather" by The Neighbourhood.
youtube
This song is fifth to me because I think it's been overplayed and overdone. I love The Neighbourhood's early music from albums Wiped Out! and I Love You. And, in my opinion, they have many better songs. This song is a crucial part of the Tumblr girl soundtrack, so I feel somewhat obligated to have this on my list.
#4: "Tennis Court" by Lorde.
youtube
In 2014, Lorde's fashion was nothing less than iconic. This song makes my list because not only was this her debut album, but some of her best songs are on it. Songs such as "Royals", "Ribs", "Buzzcut Season", and "Team" are featured.
#3: "R U Mine?" by the Arctic Monkeys.
youtube
Arctic Monkeys were also crucial to the aesthetic in 2014. Their album AM had many other hit songs during this trend, and these songs are still popular amongst alternative indie fans today. I also spent $80 on a signed vinyl of this album in 2020 and it is still one of my most treasured items.
#2: "Robbers" by The 1975.
youtube
To this day I still listen to their entire discography, without a single skip. "Robbers" is still such an iconic song, and the vibe of the band at the time of this song's release describes the Tumblr girl vibe. Matty Healy was a Tumblr treasure in 2014. He was the Ryan Gosling of Tumblr (I'll let you form your own opinion).
#1: "Tumblr Girls" by G-Eazy and Christopher Anderson.
youtube
I couldn't give any other song the number one slot, for obvious reasons this song reminds me of the 2014 Tumblr girl trend. Besides that, I love the way this song sounds.
This post was a perfect way to reminisce about a trend I was too young to understand, but now old enough to enjoy.

okay I’m no expert when it comes to sales and industry dynamics but I truly fully believe that K-pop reached its height and all these inflated sales and records purely cuz of covid. this isn’t to discredit anybody’s work and of course there was already a spotlight on it but the level it reached was purely cuz of covid cuz with everybody locked up inside a lot of people just needed lighthearted content to binge and that’s what kpop provided. I might be fully wrong about the prediction but I do believe that with lockdowns not happening kpop will minimise a lot more than what stans expect at the moment. I just find it so fascinating and sometimes I do wonder if Covid didn’t happen then what would the kpop landscape look like? im sorry for any mistakes cuz English isn’t my first language
sorry for late reply anon!
i think covid was def a factor but sale numbers started rising before that. like i remember when digital downloads took over and very popular idols weren't cracking 500k sales because market saturation. albums also had less gimmicks, like photocard poster and that's it. exo is the group that brought back massive sales, for whiiiiile they weren't considered a legit million sellers because sm produced multiple versions of albums. now it doesn't seem like an issue anymore... g.o.d were the last idol million sellers (fun fact first million sellers in korea was a band hyunsik's father was in)
i do think covid cranked things to the max. whatever was going on already became accelerated(?). no doubt sale numbers would continue to go up as kpop became more known abroad and buying albums became more accessible, but covid did cause things to skyrocket. and you can tell kpop's growth goes hand in hand with korea's economy, because things are slowing up there. there's gotta be some shady stuff going on, like buying back albums to hike up sale numbers artificially (cube did that to 4m in 2012 were caught immediately...) as digital chart manipulation in 2010s was a thing companies like starshit got away with. like at this point i wonder if authorities tasked with catching fraud are just looking the other way, ignoring how album sales numbers look unreal
i think you can gauge kpop's rise abroad by how many youtube videos about "dark side of kpop" popped up. a lot of them at best silly at worst misinformed. active entertaiment industry in every country is Bad. kpop was based on japanese and american teen idol systems if you ask Me, and both of these are... yea. lee sooman especially basically copied everyone's homework, sm rookies are exactly what johnny juniors are minus i guess backdancing for senior idols
covid caused things go online and tbh stuff you wouldn't be able to access in 2019 was uploaded officially in 2020. being able to stream kpop concerts online??? unthinkable before that
shipping things from korea became harder to do because korea post became super restrictive, i ordered some kbeauty items in feb 2020 from ebay, sellers couldn't ship them and just refunded me. things shipped in jan/feb came like 3 months later 🫣 i stopped buying albums by that point so idk how that affected individual buyers, but group order accounts are all over twitter/fb so idk
personally covid caused a lot of hurt and pain in my life i wish it didn't happen at all. and that govt's response wasn't basically 'if you die, you die' but that's besides the point
and your english is fine! don't worry! im not a native speaker either
