You're Still The One For Me - A Stephen Strange/Doctor Strange x Reader Oneshot
Tumblr media
My whole life my nose was stuck between the pages. Whether it was a fiction about a group of talented misfits saving their world from destruction, or a medical textbook about the current hot topics in the medicinal field, it was where you could find me. I was always there.
So was Stephen Strange.
We bonded over our shared passions and got along quite well. He didn't mock me for my interests in books, because he felt that he had the same thing.
But our friendship soon turned to love. At least, for me. However, he didn't feel the same thing. Not since he laid his eyes on his beautiful colleague Christine Palmer. Whenever he told me about her, I could see it in his eyes. How he cared for her. How he loved her.
And I suppose that was the moment that I was never going to pursue a love that's only written about in books. Because, in my eyes, the only person who could give me the love I wanted, or the one I truly loved, was one who never saw me outside of the friendzone.
Yet, somehow, I still got stuck in the weirdest situations for him. Like this one, for example: I'm his plus-one to the wedding of his love of his life, Christine Palmer.
How did I get here, you ask?
Simple.
Love.
-
''Y/N, you need to hurry,'' Stephen called out to me as I was getting dressed upstairs, his eyes focused on the watch around his wrist, ''they're starting in half an hour!''
''Okay, okay, okay. I'll be right down.'' I screamed down in frustration. I had been struggling with the damn zipper of my dress for ten minutes now and as I was about to give up, the zipper gave in and went all the way up. Satisfied with my look, I finished the final touches of my makeup and ran downstairs with the heels in my hands.
Stephen was standing there, frozen, but the look on his face was sorrow. He always used to think that he was a closed door to me, but I could read him like an open book. There was nothing he could hide from me. But, I always decided to never question it. If he wanted me to know, he would've told me.
''I'd almost mistaken your mood for excitement.'' I chuckled as I let him glare me down.
He shook his head and wrapped his arm around mine, escorting me out the front door of the sanctum where I've been staying the past few weeks.
The only downside of his friendship - beside being stuck in the friendzone - was that all his enemies were out to get me. Ever since I was once kidnapped by some evil guy who was out for him, Stephen hadn't been thrilled about me staying home alone. Without parents, without family and without roommates. That's the moment he had enough and dragged me to his home, the sanctum, just so he could keep a watchful eye on me.
''Are you sure you want to go?'' I asked carefully. I needed to know how he felt about her once and for all. Just to give me some closure, I suppose.
He sighed, ''I have no choice. She might be a painful part of my past, she's also a dear friend; I want to be there for her at one of the happiest days of her life.''
There was no stopping the smile on my face. The man I know as Stephen Strange was far from truthful. Especially about his emotions. But I could see for once, that he had accepted the way their story ended.
I know for a fact that it hurts, but once you do, it's way easier. You won't have a heartache whenever you lay your eyes on them.
I squeezed his arm as we passed the street, Stephen making sure that we will both be there safely, ''I'm proud of you, Stephen.''
His head turned to me and he searched for my gaze.
Once he found it, I made sure that he could see the admiration in them that I've always found for it.
A smile came onto his face, ''You always do know how to cheer me up.''
''It's what friends are for.'' My heart ached at my own words.
-
The wedding went smoothly. Stephen hadn't objected and the ceremony went as well as they had hoped it would be. Stephen was mingling with the rest, greeting his old colleagues, as I stood beside Christine with a cocktail in my hand.
''Thank you.'' Christine muttered as she smiled at me.
A frown took over, as I couldn't think of the reason why she was thanking me, ''For what?''
''For taking care of him. I don't know what would've happened if you weren't there for him.''
''He would still have you,'' I took a sip from my drink and raked my eyes over the crowd, my heart jumping when they fell on Stephen, ''I know for a fact that he cares more about that.''
Christine frowned. She placed her drink down and stepped in front of me. Worry was etched in her eyes.
''What are you rambling about? You're his life, Y/N.''
I sighed, shaking my head, ''I know that is the truth.''
''It's far from the truth, listen,'' she sat down with me in a quiet spot and lowered her voice, ''don't tell I said anything, but Stephen has had an eye on a certain something for quite some time now.''
I nodded. I knew about this. ''Yes,'' I leaned closer to her, ''you.''
She shook her head rapidly. ''No, no, no,'' a sigh escaped her lips, ''it's you.''
My heart jumped.
Could it be the truth? Could he really, really have chosen me?
I didn't dare to get my hopes up.
Standing up from my spot, I excused myself and ran outside for some air.
No one was out there, only the occasional passengers that needed to go through this side street to get to their own destination. I took a big gulp of air and relaxed against the wall beside the entrance.
I had some quiet time for about five minutes when the door opened and a man looked around in worry.
Once he looked at me, I could see from my corner that it was Stephen. And, he saw me too.
''I was wondering where you went, even though Christine said not to worry.'' He spoke gently, as if he was afraid to push me away.
I averted my gaze from him. ''Christine's right,'' my voice came out frigid, but I tried to pretend I didn't notice, ''you worry too much.''
There was a comforting silence between for a second as we stood side by side, watching the people pass us by as if we were invisible to the eye.
As I was sinking more and more into complete relaxation, I felt a tingling sensation in my hand. Something feathered along my hand. My gaze went down, and I felt a smile on my face as I saw Stephen's fingers extended, hoping for a return.
I gently responded with the same gesture, and it only took him a few seconds for him to wrap his hand around mine.
''No matter what went down between Christine and me,'' his eyes sought for mine and held them captive with his intense stare, ''you're still the one for me.''
''You're still the one for me, as well.''
We looked at each other for a second when I smiled brightly and pressed a kiss against his cheek. I pulled back slowly, lingering for just a second as I squeezed his hand, ''Let's return before we worry the bride and groom too much.''
''Only if you promise to go on a date with me.''
Stephen's reply caught me off-guard, but I still managed to accept his proposal. We walked side by side into the building again, both oblivious to the fact that we were getting stares at our still intertwined hands.

There are these videos on Youtube, called 'Actors on actors', and my dream is to see Mark Gatiss, Sian Brooke and Benedict Cumberbatch just sit and talk, doesn't matter what about. And that's it. No season 5, no movie, just the three of them talking. That would be more than enough.
