The High Note hits the $20 Digital Rental this Friday.  . . This is more or less a Diana Ross biopic from the point of view of her white assistant. . . Tracee Ellis Ross (Blackish) plays Grace Davis (Diana Ross). Dakota Johnson (Ben and Kate, 50 Shades Of Grey) Plays her assistant. Ice Cube (NWA, Anaconda) is her manager. Also stars Eddie Izzard, Bill Pullman, June Diane Raphael and Marc Evan Jackson.  . . I have seen ZERO commercials for this movie. I did see the trailer once or twice right before the world ended. But no ads. On the other hand, it does turn out that I am a white dude so it makes sense that Focus Features isn’t spending money to advertise to me.  . . I really liked the sitcom Ben and Kate that went 16 episodes on Fox. And then Dakota Johnson suffered through umpteen 50 Shades movies in order to make herself a name and get to do movies like this. . . In 2014 we got a white movie about Jazz in Whiplash. Earlier this year we got a white movie about Basketball in The Way Back, and now here’s a white movie about Diana Ross.  . . Tracee Ellis Ross is great on Blackish and in the voice over of the spin-off about her character growing up called Mixedish. Seeing her get a theoretically big screen movie is pretty great. Ice Cube seems great in the trailer. More Eddie Izzard is always a great thing.  . . But ultimately this is a movie about Dakota Johnson’s character getting her big break through established IP. Which is also the movie. Doing a biopic on Diana Ross w/o paying to do a biopic about Diana Ross. Reminds me of various people whining on Twitter about CBS or Hasbro shutting down their Star Trek fan films or knock-off G.I. Joe figures. If you don’t license the property, you don’t get to complain.  . I heard an NPR interview w/ one of the Supremes complaining that she can’t get a biopic made about herself because Dreamgirls was already made. They made a movie about her life and didn’t pay her. .
